* BaseBreakingCharacter: You either love Tsukasa or think he's one of the worst love interests in shoujo manga history.
* FanPreferredCouple: Tsukushi was originally supposed to end up with Rui but Tsukasa/Tsukushi became so popular with fans it became the OfficialCouple.
** Which is ironic because after the manga finished, Rui/Tsukushi became the FanPreferredCouple for some who thought Tsukasa became an incredible jerkass at times who kept upsetting Tsukushi while Rui gradually became a much more friendly and warm young man who was always there for Tsukushi.
* FunnyAneurysmMoment: In-universe, in the live-action. In the first season, Rui incites an F4 brawl by pretending to have feelings for Makino to test Tsukasa's own feelings for her. When it's over, he warns Tsukasa that if he ever hurts Makino, Rui "won't hold back," implying he'll beat him up again. Everyone laughs it off. Come second season, when Rui unrepentantly admits he kissed her, he reminds Tsukasa of those words. Rui really ''was'' in love with Makino back then, and by not holding back, he meant that if Tsukasa screwed up Rui would pursue her for himself.
* LesYay: Shigeru and Sakurako near the end (much to Sakurako's chagrin). This is because Shigeru's CloudCuckoolander nature really doesn't seem to let her know that saying "I'm in love with you!" after [[http://www.manga2u.com/Hana_Yori_Dango/217/08/ this crowning moment of awesome for Sakurako]] or [[http://www.manga2u.com/Hana_Yori_Dango/241/04/ dragging her to the dance floor]] as [[ThoseTwoGuys Those Two Girls]] might give those implications.
** Makino also occasionally gets awestruck by particularly beautiful girls, even going so far as to decide to attend Eitoku due to being so impressed by Shizuka.
* {{Narm}}: In the J-Drama, "But rape is bad, Tsukasa!"
** More like lampshading. He was clearly kidding.
* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: Was a pretty influential work in the [[{{Shojo}} Shoujo]] genre, so it's possible for someone to read the original manga and marvel at how TropeOverdosed it is without understanding that it pioneered the use of many of Shojo tropes.
* VillainDecay: Happens to every former villain as [[EvilMatriarch Kaede]] gains prominence as Tsukushi's main obstacle. In the J-Drama Sakurako in particular is a victim to TheWorfEffect, when Kaede completely brushes her off during the [[BeautyContest Teen of Japan Competition.]]
* TheWoobie: Poor Rui. He was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome ever since he was young and had great trouble socializing and making friends. The girl who helped bring him out of his shell and first love, Shizuka ends up marrying someone else. His second love, Tsukushi whom he loved more than Shizuka and would stand by with and comfort in times of need ends up with his best friend and {{jerkass}}, Tsukasa. After these two rejections, he ends up all alone like he used to be but the manga hints that he may find someone special one day.
** JerkassWoobie: Tsukasa is a neurotic scumweasel, but he gets dragged through the dirt, beaten into a pulp, and abused and abandoned enough throughout the series that it's hard not to feel bad for him.
