* AudienceAlienatingPremise: The entire film is essentially an insult to people who like to watch these kind of films.
* BileFascination: People who hate the film and its arguments have spent a lot of effort to refute it.
* CrowningMomentOfFunny: Yes, it's a DiabolusExMachina, but [[spoiler:[[BreakingTheFourthWall using the remote to rewind the film]] was really funny]].
** Paul and "Fatty"'s banter has its moments as well. They're pretty much a ''boke-tsukkomi'' pair (with murder).
* CultClassic: Both the original and remake have developed followings since their theatrical releases.
* DarknessInducedAudienceApathy: The dictates of the message demand that the story end badly, so once you see where it's going, there's no reason to watch the rest.
* EvilIsSexy: Paul in both versions is a handsome young man.
* LoveItOrHateIt: Reception of the film falls in two camps: "completely brilliant" and "utterly unwatchable". Sometimes both, but never a middle-ground. The fact that it was remade for American audiences didn't do much to help matters, and only seemed to increase Haneke's detractors' image of him as a humorless hypocrite and troll.
* {{Padding}}: Lots of it, but in particular, a ten minute scene where we see Anne [[spoiler: emotionally reacts to the situation and morns over the recent murder of her son.]]
