* FairForItsDay: The creature designs in ''Expedition'' have gotten some flack in recent years for being implausible, but at the time it was one of the first works to describe alien life as though it was real, in a manner based on actual biology.
* {{Squick}}: During Barlowe's observation of the Daggerwrists, one individual, nicknamed Scar-Chest, came to display cannibalistic tendencies and killed several members of its own troop. Eventually, as if having had enough of Scar-Chest's murderous behavior, the rest of the troop then gangs up on Scar-Chest, pins them down, and ''cuts their torso open with their blade-like arms...''[[spoiler: though it's revealed that Scar-Chest was actually ''pregnant'', and the rest of the Daggerwrist troop happily adopt the infant with no qualms and carry it away on their backs.]]
