* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Is Ash insane? Is he dead? Is this AllJustADream? There is also a tension between the interpenetration of Ash as an IdiotHero vs someone who is BrilliantButLazy. ''Army of Darkness'' depicts Ash as having significant leadership and technical skills, but also has him making some pretty serious errors in judgement like forgetting the magic words. While most people assume the Idiot trope, such mistakes could be due to Ash's lazy attitude. Much of this debate hinges on the choice of ending with the original "Raimi" leaning toward idiot and the RevisedEnding leaning towards BrilliantButLazy where Ash returns to his utterly non-demanding S-Mart job despite being capable of so much more. There was an interview with Bruce Campbell where he said that Ash had a lot of formal education (thus the textbooks and engineering supplies in his trunk), but took a job at S-Mart because it was the only place "he felt loved".
* BrokenBase: While most fans agree that ''Evil Dead 2'' is the best of the trilogy, they tend to differ on which film in the original trilogy is the second-best:
** The first is either seen as one of the greatest horror films or a poorly made film by today's standards. Part of this has to do with the first film's DarkerAndEdgier tone, meaning that it lacks the humor of its sequels.
** Likewise, many either love or hate the DenserAndWackier approach of ''Army of Darkness''. The third film easily boasts the most memorable lines and the most action scenes, but it also lacks the horror of the previous two movies.
* CompleteMonster: See [[Monster/EvilDead here]].
* CrossesTheLineTwice: If there was a line, then it must have been obscured by Sam Raimi's many footprints.
* CultClassic: The films in the original trilogy, while quite profitable due to the low budgets of the films, were never major box office forces in their original theatrical runs, yet it has produced media in a wide range of formats for decades since due to a loyal following. The series had demonstrably broken into mainstream success by the release of the reboot ''Film/{{Evil Dead|2013}}'' in 2013, the first film in the series to top the US box office, and its generational popularity was further affirmed with three seasons of ''Series/AshVsEvilDead''. ''Film/EvilDeadRise'', released ten years after the reboot, was an even bigger financial hit.
* EvenBetterSequel: ''Evil Dead 2'' is responsible for setting the HorrorComedy tone for the franchise and turning Ash into a wisecracking badass. Similarly, it is usually regarded as the best ''Evil Dead'' film since it has a good balance of humor and horror whereas the first film takes its premise seriously without any jokes and the third film embraces the camp even further and intentionally goes over the top.
* FriendlyFandoms:
** With ''Franchise/ANightmareOnElmStreet'' and ''Franchise/FridayThe13th''. Each franchise references the other at one point or another, and there were so many fans of all three franchises that they even had [[ComicBook/FreddyVsJasonVsAsh a three-way crossover]].
** With ''Film/SpiderManTrilogy'' because they also produced notable memes and were made by the same director.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: The franchise has quite the following in Britain (ironic, given that the first film was one of the VideoNasties).
* JerkassWoobie: Ash shows these traits in the second and third movies. He increasingly acts more like a jerk, but he's just trying to get out of this nightmare alive.
* MemeticBadass: Ash. Who else?
* MemeticMutation: {{Cosplay}} crossovers with ''Anime/PokemonTheSeries'' are common, due to both having protagonists named Ash. Becomes even funnier in ''VideoGame/PokerNight2'', where there's also a [[WesternAnimation/TheVentureBros Brock]].
* NarmCharm: ''The entire damn series.'' The effects are obviously fake and it’s utterly silly (though the silliness is intentional), but that’s one of the reasons why people love it!
* NauseaFuel: The first film was one of the goriest movies at the time and the remake managed to be one of the goriest for modern audiences.
* SoBadItWasBetter: There is a minority of fans of the first film who felt that the series' decision to be increasingly more intentionally comedic in the sequels was a poor decision. As they felt the fun of the first film was laughing '''at''' the cheesy effects and acting that were '''mostly''' unintentional. They felt that by making the sequels overtly comedic, it removes the SoBadItsGood aspect. Since the creators are in on the joke, it isn't as fun to point and laugh at.
* SpecialEffectFailure: For contemporary viewers with clear prints and by the standards of effects now. People found the gore quite convincing when the films were new. By ''Army of Darkness'', a lot of it's intentional, and that which isn't (Such as the brief bit during the recap which shows the string Ash is hanging from or the sections which you can blatantly tell are greenscreen shots) is happening at a point in the movie which [[RuleOfCool is just too awesome to care about]]. A few of the effects [[SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome still hold up really well]], though, in particular the severed hand sequence and [[spoiler: the trees attacking the cabin.]]
* WatchItForTheMeme: One of the reasons many fans in the 21st Century watched the movies was to get some context for all the memes it's spawned.
* TheWoobie: Ash goes through a lot of shit in all three movies, lets be honest. His first girlfriend is possessed and then he's forced to kill her, he spends two nights being tormented by the evil spirits in the forest, he ends up thrown in the far past where he's humiliated and constantly screws up, and (if you take the director's cut of ''Army of Darkness'' into account) then wakes up into a post-apocalyptic future with everyone he has ever known dead.
