!! 1987 Steven Spielberg film.
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Basie - JerkWithAHeartofGold who did what he had to do to survive, what anyone else might have done to survive, or just a complete {{Jerkass}}?
* CrowningMomentOfAwesome: meets FacingTheBulletsOneLiner when Jim takes Basie back to his abandoned house to see if there's anything worth taking from it. Unfortunately, the house is no longer abandoned, but now quarters Japanese officers who proceed to [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown beat the living shit out of Basie.]] He casually tosses Jim his aviator shades before the beatdown, with the line, "I want these back when they're done, kid!"
* CrowningMomentOfFunny - Basie deadpans "I bet my Life", referring to his magazine.
* CrowningMomentOfHeartWarming meets CrowningMusicOfAwesome - [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyf059psVew Suo Gan]]
* CrowningMusicOfAwesome: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=To8vbhCG2DY The choir scene at the start of the movie.]]
* EnforcedMethodActing: In the scene where Jamie goes back home to look for his parents, a maid he berated earlier [[TheDogBitesBack slaps him and steals some furniture.]] The look of pain and betrayal on Jamie's face was genuine since behind the cameras, the scene was practiced with a fake slap, but when it was filmed for real, [[Creator/StevenSpielberg Steven Spielberg]] told the actress to slap [[Creator/ChristianBale Christian Bale]] for real.
* JerkassWoobie - Jamie starts as a rather spoiled kid who puts one of his servants through much stress, but quickly loses the jerkass part after he gets separated from his parents and becomes a full-fledged woobie. The servant he stressed out actually ''slaps'' him when he tries to boss her and another servant around when he sees them stealing some furniture after the Japanese take over so as to make it very clear to him that he no longer has any control over her.
* RetroactiveRecognition: Creator/BenStiller as one of the American prisoners of war.
** Not to mention [[Film/TheDarkKnightSaga Batman]] as our KidHero.
** A very emaciated [[Film/TheMatrix Cypher]] is Basie's put-upon number two, Frank.
** And a young [[Series/DoctorWho Eighth Doctor]] in a blink-or-you'll-miss-it part.
* TheScrappy --> RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap: Jim is an extremely annoying SpoiledBrat for the first half of the film, but he grows out of it throughout the rest of the film. [[CharacterDevelopment And that's]] [[ComingOfAgeStory the point]].
