* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: Is OAV!Fatora naturally a complete SpoiledBrat, or were her already bad traits enhanced after whatever she went through as a DistressedDamsel? It could sorta explain the following...
** Both Alielle's statement that Fatora "hadn't changed" complete with Rune seeming to think nothing about her behavior seems to work against this interpretation.
* AngstWhatAngst Fatora after being freed from the Phantom Tribe, also, nobody is too worried about [[ParentalAbandonment family back on Earth thinking they're dead.]]
* AntiClimaxBoss: After all the build up and dramatic tension, Kalia pwns [[PersonOfMassDestruction Ifurita]] in three simple moves and casually tosses her aside.
* BaseBreaker: Fatora is both loved and hated due of her [[{{Jerkass}} bitchy attitude.]] Some fans find it funny and other fans find it annoying.
* CrazyAwesome: Katsuhiko Jinnai.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Though ''drastically'' different from her OVA counterpart, TV Ifurita was apparently popular enough to be included in a radio drama taking place in OVA continuity (an alternative sequel to the second OVA), under the name of "Ifurina".
* EvilIsSexy: Queen Diva and Lord Galus.
* FranchiseOriginalSin: Makoto's status as a ChickMagnet and the accompanying harem antics. In the original OVA, they were a sidebar that provided {{fanservice}} and didn't hurt anything, but by ''The Alternative World'', Ifurita was temporarily out of the game, the writers had completely run out of ideas, and their attempt to turn the show into a [[Anime/TenchiMuyo Tenchi-standard]] [[HaremSeries romantic comedy]] was probably the biggest reason that ''Alternative'' crashed so hard.
* HoYay: Galus and Nahato, which is an disturbing example since Nahoto physically looks and sounds like a child.
** LesYay: The lesbianism in ''El Hazard'' is pretty straightforward, between Alielle and Fatora's relationship, and their repeat attempts to seduce Shayla and the others. While it's ''intended'' purposes are comedy and {{fanservice}}, it's no surpise that some viewers [[DudeNotFunny fail to see the humor.]]
*** The most notable instance occurs in the final episode of ''The Alternative World'', during the trip to Arlaman[[note]]the holy spring, which the Priestesses of Mt. Moldune visit for their annual purification ritual[[/note]], where they felt up Shayla, Nanami, and Afura while disguised as bath attendants. [[spoiler: Alielle, in particular, [[DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnFemale had Afura on all fours and appeared to be humping her.]]]]
*** In the first episode of ''El Hazard 2'', Fatora makes a pass at Nanami while disguised as Makoto, but Nanami saw through it, thanks to Fatora giving herself away (twice[[note]]first by grabbing her breast, which Nanami noted Makoto wouldn't do, and because Fatora mispronouced "Shino-NO-me" as "Shino-GO-me"[[/note]]), and threatened to report her to Rune Venus if she ever tried it again.
*** The following episode has her fool Shayla, by once again pretending to be Makoto[[note]]this time, after nightfall, so Shayla wouldn't be able to make the distinction between them[[/note]], in order to make out with her, thereby stealing her [[SacredFirstKiss first kiss.]] The truth dawns on her when the real Makoto shows up. [[PervertRevengeMode Shayla was justifiably pissed.]]
* LoveToHate: Jinnai. Make no mistake, he's a [[SmugSnake smug]] [[JerkAss bastard]] but, if ever there was proof that [[TropesAreTools tropes aren't bad]], it's him. You'll be [[LaughablyEvil too busy laughing at the things he says and does]], and [[MagnificentBastard applauding]] when he [[BatmanGambit out gambits]] Makoto, all while waiting for him to get his [[LaserGuidedKarma just desserts.]] It's no wonder he's such a popular villain.
* {{Moe}}: Rune Venus in the TV series.
* NightmareFuel: Kalia is [[http://mitglied.multimania.de/kiyone/nuke/modules/Gallery/hazard/hazard_1_5_kalia_back.gif really creepy.]]
* TheScrappy: Qawool is considered annoying by many fans, due to her [[MomentKiller habit of repeatedly ruining Shayla's and Nanami's attempts to get closer to Makoto.]] For others, she's a johnny-come-lately love interest, when Makoto already had Ifurita.
* SuperlativeDubbing Considered the definite version by the production studios.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Nahato didn't appears in the sequels despite the fact that he could make a good BigBad.
* UnfortunateImplications: The {{Yuri}} couple of the series, Fatora and Alielle, carry on an open relationship and both have DepravedHomosexual tendencies towards several straight women, who completely abhor their advances. Neither take no for an answer though and aggressively pursue the other women whether they want it or not.
** Miz getting a marriage proposal out of Fujisawa under the influence of alcohol, throwing a humongous fit when he leaves her at the altar to "find himself" (which could have easily killed several innocent people) and the cast making him ''apologize'' for running away when they catch up with him. Nobody ever calls out Miz on this, and this would be a ''lot'' worse if the genders were switched.
* UnintentionallySympathetic: Jinnai and the Bugrom.
** YMMV. Some may think they are too funny to be unintentionally sympathetic.
* VillainSue: For some, Kalia was this, as solidified by the AntiClimaxBoss entry above.
** Justified, considering she's an ApocalypseMaiden who was created through a combination of El Hazard's ancient technology and alchemy. She isn't a villain sue, [[SortingAlgorithmOfEvil she's just uberpowered]] [[OvershadowedByAwesome compared to the rest of the cast.]]
* WhatAnIdiot: In the TV Series, Nanami managed to become friends with the Bugrom and even with Queen Diva. So they will stop being evil, right? Well, that would be happening if Nanami didn't ''crush'' in front them a baby Bugrom, thinking this was just a normal insect (But don't worry, it recovered quickly.) Thus, the Bugrom locked her up and stayed evil, and that was exactly as Jinnai planned!
** A ''lot'' in ''El Hazard 2: The Magnificent World''. There are so many moments, you'd swear the cast was playing professional volleyball with the IdiotBall. A few examples: Fatora's inability to control her libido costing the gang their money and their airship, believing Katsuhiko's obvious lies despite Nanami's warnings ''(keep in mind that Nanami is his sister, and would know him better than everyone else)'', Makoto still trying to negotiate with the ObviouslyEvil Kalia despite her trying to kill him mere seconds ago, the Muldoon Priestesses combining their attacks into one projectile against a character who ''reflects'' projectiles, and so on.
*** Ifurita even averts this. When she realizes that her projectiles have no effect on Kalia, she [[TakeAThirdOption takes a third option]] and ''physically beats the crap out of her'' instead.
* TheWoobie: Both OVA and TV Ifurita.
** JerkassWoobie: TV Jinnai, where we go a little more in depth to what makes him tick. During his childhood, everyone prefered his neighbor Makoto and his sister Nanami and he was often alone. Granted, his JerkAss nature still means he brings it on himself, but in some ways this makes his situation somewhat more understandable.
