* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Did Curtis ever really care about either Effie or Deena, or did he just use them the way he used everyone else? [[spoiler:If he had known that Effie was pregnant with his child, would he have still kicked her to the curb, or would he have tried to work out a situation that would work for all of them?]]
* ArtisticLicenseHistory: There's a scene where the Dreams are recording "Heavy", the shots before we actually see them recording is clearly of the Detroit "12th street" riot of 1967. There's even a small recreation of the event before we see them performing a rehearsal of Heavy at the television studio. The following scene, there's a brief shot of the marquee that states that the year is 1966, making the riot irrelevant to the plot (except to display the CivilRightsMovement that was appropriate for the era).
* AwardSnub: Most people felt Eddie Murphy should have won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance as Jimmy. Film/{{Norbit}} caused him to lose it.
** The movie earned eight Oscar nominations, more than any other movie of its year, yet got denied a Best Picture nomination.
* EnsembleDarkHorse: Originally [[ItWasHisSled Effie White]], now it's Jimmy Early.
* HilariousInHindsight: In the movie, (and also in Music/DestinysChild) Beyonce plays the SpotlightStealingSquad. However after the movie came out Jennifer Hudson and EddieMurphy took it over.
* IAmNotShazam: Despite the title of the film and the song, they are called the Dreamettes, the Dreams, and then Deena Jones and the Dreams.
* MoralEventHorizon: Curtis near the end when he steals C.C. and Effie's song ''One Night Only'' for his own. Luckily its also the start of his LaserGuidedKarma.
** In-universe, the last straw for Deena was when Curtis pulled the plug on the gritty film project she wanted to undertake, forcing her into his Cleopatra movie that she was never interested in.
*** Which was an expy of Magnolia, that Diana Ross starred in.
* TearJerker: In the film [[spoiler:Lorrell learning of Jimmy's death. Even though he was a self-destructive jerk she's so heartbroken over his death that it's impossible not to share her pain.]]
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: Try having the girls sit in the studio, recording a song for hours, while a riot is taking place just outside the studio. You can literally hear helicopters and sirens during Deena/Curtis/Effie's dialogue. Of course, early on there's a television in the control booth televising the riot, but Curtis literally pays it no mind. Instead, he looks onwards with his cigarette in hand.
* TheWoobie: Effie and Deena
** JerkassWoobie: Effie, not a {{jerkass}} [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold per se]] still counts. Although she was selfish, rude, and self-absorbed at first, she loses her spot and her boyfriend, who she really wanted to stay with while she was pregnant with his baby. It's not that hard to feel sorry for her. Plus, seeing him getting married to Deena must have hurt her a lot.
