* SugarWiki/AwesomeArt:
** Some parts, despite the occasionally-rough anatomy, and the simplified style in the faces, looks so darn good. What makes it especially hilarious is that the author herself stated that she was terrible at art when she was a kid and even into art school!
** The anime also deserves special mention due to the breathtaking backgrounds and fluid animation that overall captures the whole spirit of the manga. While it's true it's [[AllCGICartoon partly CGI]], there's love put into this production, moreso because it airs without censorship once per week on Netflix.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic:
** "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxZFP4e8VaA Night SURFING]]" is among the most popular of them, an upbeat song that fits the surprisingly wholesome nature of the series. What also stands out is the low-frame animation of Kaiman, Nikaido, Shin, Noi, Fujita, Ebisu and a whole lot of zombies marching around Hole.
** "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zp0Tmw3HPNk D.D.D.D]]", which trades in "upbeat" for enchanting. It also features a ''VideoGame/{{Doom}}'' inspired, first-person video game animation with En as the player character. Only instead of guns, he turns people into mushrooms.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZF3dJSqcAQ "Strange Meat Pie"]], which goes straight back to "upbeat" and plays in the episode starting the Blue Night arc in the anime. It brings back the marching animation from the second ending featuring En's family. And Kikurage trying to catch a blue beetle.
* BaseBreakingCharacter:
** Dokuga. He is highly popular among certain corners of the fandom (especially female fans), but a number of readers dislike him for remaining slavishly loyal to the Cross-Eyes Boss, long after it's obvious that the Boss is [[spoiler:a complete psychopath who has no problem killing his own allies to steal their power]].
** A particular version of a character, namely the utterly manic [[spoiler:Devil Nikaido]]. She is controversial because her personality is so different from the character the readers have come to know thorough the story.
* CrazyIsCool: Johnson, a human-sized cockroach that spouts "Shocking!", among others. He also wears sneakers, and he is possibly the only thing in Hole that is deadlier than Kaiman.
** Turkey and Chota qualify as well. Turkey because he can create PERFECT REPLICAS, albeit without personality of EVERYONE... [[SincerityMode WITH A PIZZA]], and Chota because he's sweet one moment, and if you piss him off, one of the worst tormentors in the series, bar [[TheDreaded Kai]]
** By the end of the series, En is this, taking on an EldritchAbomination that's curb-stomped everyone else and then spore-bombing it as hard as he can with a mixture of spite and sheer determination. [[spoiler: he wins ]]
* CrossesTheLineTwice: When Dokuga and friends try to make their [[FatBastard morbidly obese]] landlady's death seem natural. The sheer wrongness of what they do with her corpse and the results (try and put her in the bathtub, only to have all the water come out, and trying to hang her only to have her fall and nearly crush them), makes the scene [[RefugeInAudacity really funny.]]
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Dokuga is possibly the most popular of the Cross-Eyes, though Tetsujo and Natsuki seem to have a decent following as well.
** Haru is also rather popular among the readers, possibly due to her attitude and her Devil form being endearing.
* FanNickname: The Gyoza Man is called "Hombre Empanada" by Argentinian fans, because empanadas is something of a trademark food for argentinians, and Gyozas are basically Japanese empanadas.
* FashionVictimVillain: Ebisu. Villain may be up for debate, but she wears some [[{{Stripperific}} truly]] [[FurAndLoathing different]] [[OurMermaidsAreDifferent outfits]]. It's acknowledged in-universe when Ebisu goes through her suitcase of clothes and realizes that none of them are suitable to wear to see [[spoiler: her parents]].
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: Argentinians love this manga because of the [[CrapSackWorld setting]], and the fact that most people can relate to [[BigEater Kaiman's]] tendency to eat [[TrademarkFavouriteFood Gyozas]], which bear a striking similarity to empanadas (a classical and much beloved Argentinian dish).
* HarsherInHindsight: Everything about the Cross-eyes and Kaiman becomes this when you learn about [[spoiler: Kai/The Boss, what he actually is, what's his true goal and the reason behind Risu's murder]].
* HilariousInHindsight: Music/KatyPerry dancing shark is a lot funnier now that when you imagine it as Ebisu dancing.
** En looks and occasionally acts like [[Film/MadMaxFuryRoad Immortan Joe.]]
* HoYay: Despite the fact that aside from [[ManlyGay Chota]], pretty much everyone else is straight, or at the very least, not concerned about romance, Risu and Aikawa have a sizable following, and even more because Risu had his trust shattered by him, bonus points for thinking all day about him and wanting revenge, kind of like a twisted, bitter ex. Now, [[WomanScorned where have I heard this before?]]
** Their first reunion after Risu's resurrection includes Aikawa taking care of Risu for two days and Risu telling Aikawa that no one else cares about him like he does. And though he's only pretending to trust Aikawa in that scene, his desire to believe in him seems genuine. A recent chapter has Aikawa hugging Risu, crying, and apologizing for not having been able to save him [[spoiler:from Kai]]. It's enough to make Risu withdraw his defenses and let go of his anger momentarily.
** Noi's reaction to fighting Nikaido for a second time (after being quite impressed with her the first time) is to exclaim that Nikaido is pretty.
* MemeticMutation:
** That is... Dorohedoro [[note]] A manga volume/episode ends with a simplified recap of everything that transpired before ending on this note to sum up the absolute chaos and weirdness of the series. [[/note]]
** Oi Josuke! [insert sentence]. [[note]] Kaiman is voiced by none other than Creator/WataruTakagi, who also voices Okuyasu Nijimura from ''Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventureDiamondIsUnbreakable''. Fans of both shows have taken a habit of quoting as Okuyasu and pretending as though he turned into Kaiman, then talking to Josuke about it. [[/note]]
** Shin is Argentinian [[note]] Due the fact that his door has "El corazón" written, which means "The Heart", the fact that he's a halfbreed/mestizo and that a well known Spanish translation in which he swears in an Argentinian fashion, people from the Spanish speaking part of the fandom have called him an Argentinian wizard, double so because everyone else speaks in a more neutral dialect. Fans who try to make him Chilean or Mexican are met with scorn; funnily enough, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N69fgcv1JaA his theme song]] sounding like a tango only adds fuel to the fire [[/note]]
** "I bite girls in pink bikinis!"[[note]]Ebisu, in a shark costume (since she's being a mascot for a baseball team), sings this randomly at one point. Expect to see it as a comment on anything involving shark costumes.[[/note]]
** Dorohedoro is the best cooking anime. [[note]]The opening for the anime, aside from opening and closing with a herd of Kaimans walking off a ledge and splattering into multicolored puddles, is just Nikaido preparing ingredients to make gyoza. The general lack of connection to the action and violence that fill most episodes made existing fans joke that the show is actually a cooking anime based on just the trailer.[[/note]]
* MoralEventHorizon: [[spoiler:Kai killing Natsuki]].
* NauseaFuel: The series has a bit of a reputation for having some absolutely disgusting content. Hole is one of the worst [[WretchedHive Wretched Hives]] in manga, with its standout feature being a literal ''lake of garbage and rotting body parts.''
** Other standout examples include Shin's power to bisect people into chunks with a wave of his hand, Noi's healing powers allowing the cast to get some seriously brutal injuries and walk it off like it's nothing, and [[spoiler: Kai's Artificial Devil suit, being a walking MiniMecha made of ''rotting human organs.'']]
** Some of the visuals revolving around Kai can be extremely disturbing, especially when one gets a glimpse into his inner world- [[spoiler: the imagery of multiple rotting heads bursting out of his neck is revolting.]]
* RootingForTheEmpire: Due to the series' GreyAndGreyMorality and having both the protagonists and antagonists equally sympathetic, many fans have found themselves siding with En and his family.
* TearJerker: Everyone's reaction to [[spoiler: En being killed by Kai]], all of the servants feel completely lost without him. [[spoiler: En]] was so much of a BenevolentBoss despite being bad.
** In chapter 146, [[spoiler:Aikawa begging and wanting Risu to kill him. The entire ordeal with Kai has left him tired, and with his original head as Kai's last vessel, he's prepared to sacrifice himself to stop him while also ending Risu's curse.]] Risu asks Aikawa if [[spoiler:there's any way to save him, but again Aikawa states his tiredness. The two finally exchange farewells before Risu beheads him.]]
* UglyCute:
** Kaiman is a lizard man who occasionally kills people in [[RefugeInAudacity broad daylight]]. Who often comes off as a [[TrademarkFavoriteFood gyoza-loving]] [[{{Adorkable}} dork]]. Who kills people in broad daylight. [[ProgressivelyPrettier It helps that the artstyle has evolved to make him look "cuter" for lack of a better word]] whereas he started off the story looking very bestial and reptilian.
** Kikurage, though not "ugly" per se, is a demon that happens to look and act like a cat, which makes it adorable.
** Haru's devil form is nearly eight feet tall with a terrifying, hooded lipless face with glowing round eyes. Somehow, her scarf, jacket, and singing make her endearing.
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Chidaruma. Yes he’s the literal devil and is supposed to be evil, but it was clear from some of his comments [[spoiler: during the Hole-kun incident]] where he says that deep down he’s [[spoiler: a deeply unhappy entity which has never been able to form a bond with anyone, ever, and is gnawed at by constant loneliness]] that we are supposed to sympathize with him on some level. The fact that he is a SmugSnake {{jerkass}} makes this hard for many readers, who are glad he’s suffering in some way rather than being a complete KarmaHoudini.
* ViewerGenderConfusion: On the part of translators. More than one translation has mistaken Fukuyama for a woman and translated the manga as such. It makes the scenes where Tanba beats up on him for incompetence decidedly less funny.
* TheWoobie: Kaiman, Fujita and Ebisu are the most notable examples.
