* Anvilicious: Much of Strapping Young Lad's SelfTitledAlbum is given over to ranting about war ("Relentless"), rape ("Rape Song") and other atrocities, which was actually Devin's primary impetus for getting the band back together. But SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped.
* CrowningMomentOfFunny: So much, he has his own page.
* EpicRiff: A lot of them, especially in Strapping Young Lad songs. "The New Black" and "Force Fed" are great examples. Amongst his solo work, "Kingdom" is a standout example.
* HellIsThatNoise: the Alien album's last song is a twelve-minute endurance test of how much electronic sounding noise and guitar feedback you can take. It's completely unsettling due to its very grinding and schizophrenic sounding last three minutes. (It also has a repeated, and rather unsettling, Morse code phrase underneath most of it).
** Possibly "Relentless", "Oh My Fucking God", "All Hail The New Flesh", "Detox", "Rape Song" and "Shitstorm" for Strapping Young Lad.
* MagnumOpus: City for Strapping Young Lad, Ocean Machine or Terria for his other works.
* MisaimedFandom: According to Devin:
-->Strapping Young Lad started as the giant middle finger, and then suddenly there were people saying "Yeah! Tell us we're assholes!"
** Perhaps more horrifyingly, WordOfGod indicates that Devin is dissatisfied with "Rape Song" because apparently some people misinterpreted it as a pro-rape song (with lyrics like "Rape is just cause for murdering/Waste life/Die bastard die bastard burn" one assumes that some people didn't actually bother reading them). Of course, this is far from the only time this has happened in rock history; Music/Nirvana and Music/HuskerDu had the same problems with "Polly" and "Diane" respectively.
* NightmareFuel: "Deathscope" off of Casualties of Cool. Sounds like the same ghostly rockabilly as the other songs on CoC until you notice Devvy growling under the main vocals followed by him screaming at the top of his lungs right before a barrage of white noise. This leads into the same simple riff being played as if outside of a vehicle, creating the effect of being left behind. The piece ends with a lonely ambience along with a voice over from Che.
* SoOkayItsAverage: Physicist, upon release, was pegged as okay but undoubtedly Dev's weakest album to that point (arguably, it still is). He immediately wrote and recorded Terria, usually considered one of his best and most personal works.
** Regarding instead Strapping Young Lad, the SelfTitledAlbum had a reception similar to: "it's actually good, but ultimately forgettable.". After that, there comes Alien, widely regarded as Devin's greatest work since City and excluding Ziltoid.
* WhatDoYouMeanItWasntMadeOnDrugs: Ziltoid loves this trope.
-->In Omnidimentional Creator:\\
Modular forms and elliptic curves!\\
Infinite phi revolving around infinite parallels,\\
fractals of infinite reality,\\
each cascading, gliding in an infinite wheel!\\
Tell me the true nature of my reality!

-->In Messages from Ziltoid:\\
Reborn,\\
Acknowledging the past of me that was lost.\\
I have repressed too many years!\\
My utopia was within my grasp!\\
Doomed in absentia!\\
Left to be sentenced!\\
Still rising to cherish all the things I have left.

-->In A Ziltoidian Rapture:\\
Tell me, are you going to finish all that yourself?\\
The knot backwards, he put his jaws upon his beard\\
They make laments upon the wonderous truths\\
Ow! Ow! Ow! Grab me your hand and pluck\\
The branch lit off the great thorn.\\
And the true crime\\
Why dost thou mock me?\\
What's to be?
