* SugarWiki/AwesomeArt: Creator/HRGiger does not disappoint with the characters and landscapes he designs.
* CultClassic: The first game is one among fans of lesser known [[AdventureGame Adventure Games]].
* JustHereForGodzilla: A lot of people play the game just to see Creator/HRGiger's artwork.
* MemeticLoser: Mike's already portrayed as something of a loser in the second game, but the {{WebVideo/Retsupurae}} fandom take it to another level. The man [[FailedASpotCheck fails to locate a portal to the Dark World]] [[spoiler:behind ''an unlocked closet door in his house,'' apparently because he had never once in his entire life opened that particular door]], how much more comedically incompetent can you get?
* MemeticMutation: "My head feels like it's going to explode."
* {{Narm}}: The first game's hand-drawn graphics and creepy soundtrack are quite effective, but marred by cheesy and silly writing, most of which is Mike talking to himself and making a non-subtle observation to his surroundings. The CD port further exacerbates the issues by adding DullSurprise voice acting. Take Mike's thought in front of his house, for example:
-->'''Mike''': It's a calm neighborhood out here. My house seems somehow out of time, a relic of a dark past or perhaps a dark future.
* NauseaFuel: The descriptions Mike Dawson uses in the Dark World.

** The artwork alone contributes around 90% of this for the first game. Courtesy of Creator/HRGiger.
** Strangely, the bad compression that goes on sometimes when people are talking ends up being this.
* OlderThanTheyThink: Most of the Creator/HRGiger artwork was not newly created for the games, and precede their creation by several years- in some cases, even decades. The Keeper of the Scrolls, for instance, is portrayed by his ''Li'' series of paintings, which date back to the early 1970s.
