* AngstWhatAngst: Cyborg 006 notably doesn't angst about his status as a cyborg. It's never explained why exactly, though his age (40s), his [[BigFun general personality]], and the fact that in the manga he was picked up by Black Ghost ''[[InterruptedSuicide in the midst of hanging himself]]'' probably add up to it.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: The 2001 anime boasts an impressive soundtrack that combines heroically epic orchestra with exciting techno beats, with some [[TearJerker emotionally soft tunes thrown in for good measure]].
** It's by none other than Tetsuya Komoro and GLOBE, of course it's gonna have awesome tracks.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4CjzMjcM8U Here]] is the re-done 1979 theme.
* CompleteMonster: Black Ghost ''loves'' employing morally reprehensible people.
** [[BigBad Skull]] (or [[SpellMyNameWithAnS Skarle, Scar, Scarl, or Sekar]]) is the leader of [[ArmsDealer the Black Ghost organization]]. He and his men [[WarForFunAndProfit exploit ongoing wars as way to make money]] by [[PlayingBothSides selling their weapons to both sides]]. In order to complete Black Ghost's "Cyborg Soldier" program, Skull sends his operatives across the world to kidnap people, taking them away from their families and friends so they can be forcibly experimented on. As a way to show off Cyborg 0013's capabilities, Skull has the cyborg rampage across Tokyo, causing massive damage and endangering the lives of countless people all so he can create a spectacle for his investors. Skull later escalates the Muamban CivilWar by dealing weapons to both sides of the strife, planning to expand the conflict into other countries simply so he can sell more weapons. Skull is also a [[BadBoss user and abuser of his minions]], and he will kill his underlings for reasons ranging from [[YouHaveFailedMe failing him]] to simply [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness being of no more use to him]]. His primary goal is to provoke [[WorldWarIII another World War]] just so he can deal more arms and [[{{Greed}} make more of a profit]]. Skull is ultimately someone with an utter disregard for human life, only caring about the sales of his weapons.
** [[MadScientist (Claus/Klaus, originally Director) Van Vogt]] (or [[SpellMyNameWithAnS Van Bogoot or Ban Bogart/Van Bogart]]), Skull's [[TheDragon second-in-command]], is a Black Ghost executive who poses as a [[CorruptCorporateExecutive businessman]] to cover his exploits. [[EvilGenius Van Vogt]] forcibly converts three of Joe/Cyborg 009's childhood friends into cyborgs and sends them out to murder him. When they can't bring themselves to kill their old friend, Vogt activates the [[ExplosiveLeash bombs he planted]] in them to punish them for their failure. He later invades the Yomi Kingdom with an army of robots. While liberating the Pu'Awak people from the oppressive rule of the Zattan, Van Vogt's regime proves to not be much better, as he forces the Pu'Awak to work on Black Ghost's ultimate weapon, the Demon Statue. He [[LaserGuidedAmnesia mindwipes]] Helen, one of the five Pu'Awak princesses, so he can use her to infiltrate and destroy the 00 Cyborgs' home. Once the mission has been accomplished, Vogt [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness leaves her for dead]]. When Helen and her sisters get fed up with his rule and help the 00 Cyborgs, Van Vogt mercilessly kills all five of them.
** [[MorallyAmbiguousDoctorate Dr.]] [[EvilCounterpart Gaia]] in the 2001 anime is the top [[MadScientist scientist]] of Black Ghost and the creator of the Mythos Cyborgs. An old colleague of Dr. Gilmore, Gaia and Gilmore disagreed on the concept of human emotions, with Gaia [[EvilCannotComprehendGood believing them to be a weakness]] while Gilmore thought they gave people strength. Setting up base on Magma Island, Gaia activates his Mythos Cyborgs and convinces them that they're actual Greek Gods who have returned to [[TheScourgeOfGod punish humanity for their sins]] and create a better world. Gaia then sends them across the world to cause disasters affecting hundreds of people so he can gather energy for his generator. When Artemis begins to [[HeelRealization doubt the Greek Gods' mission]] and [[ScrewThisImOutOfHere leaves]], Gaia fatally shoots her to prevent her from possibly interfering with his plans, even though she showed no intention of standing in the Mythos Cyborgs' way. Even as Magma Island collapses as a result of his generator overloading, Dr. Gaia refuses listen to reason, instead declaring that he can use his generator to [[AGodAmI become a god]]. In the end, Gaia is shown to not care about anything other than [[EvilIsPetty proving that his cyborgs are better than Gilmore's]] and [[AGodAmI becoming a god]].
** ''Call of Justice '': [[BigBad Emperor]] is the mysterious leader of the [[AncientConspiracy Blessed]]. In order to [[AGodAmI evolve the human race more to his liking]], the Emperor resolves to initiate a process that will kill 95% of the human population all so he bring 5% under his control. After his initial plan fails, Emperor decides to combine his remaining powers with 001's psychic powers so he can "reset" humanity and rebuild their society from scratch. When his subordinate, Catalina, [[HeelFaceTurn betrays him]] after forming a bond with 009, Emperor punishes her by [[MindRape wiping her entire mind and reducing her down to her base instincts]]. Emperor then announces his intention to do this to all of humanity so he can reprogram them to worship him as a god. Though at first appearing to be a well-intentioned being, the Emperor's [[NotSoWellIntentionedExtremist true colors]] are eventually revealed to be that of a [[ItsAllAboutMe egotistical]] lunatic, who even admits that he "never really had [a heart] to begin with."
* ContestedSequel: "Conclusion: God's War" is meant to be seen as the official continuation and ending to the manga, however, the fact that it wasn't written by Ishinomori (due to AuthorExistenceFailure) has left it ''highly'' contested by fans. The fact that Kazuhiko Shimamoto was left out of the planning for the finalized manga also sparked controversy, as Ishinomori had wanted to co-plot the original concept with him.
* DieForOurShip: Yaoi fangirls ''really'' hated 003 ([[RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap for a while]]). 009 x 003 fans ''really'' hated either Cynthia, Ixquic, Karl, Helen (especially in the 2001 anime) or 002. As far as the "God's War" manga goes? Hisui and Alan aren't very liked due to being seen as cheapening the 009 x 003 relationship by being other love interests [[spoiler: and then there's Hisui as Himiko committing MindRape on Joe to make him hallucinate having sex with her.]]
** While most of this behavior has quieted down in recent years, occasional flare-ups can be seen in parts of the fanbase, especially when it concerns the sanctity of 009 x 003 or other fans not liking characters being either in the way of canon or their own ships. And especially with "God's War" complicating the matter.
* EvilIsCool: [[BigBad Skull]]. He's utterly devious, has a cool design, and in the 2001 anime, he's voiced by Creator/NorioWakamoto (or Creator/RichardEpcar in the English dub) both of whom give him an incredibly [[LargeHam hammy]] and enjoyable performance.
* GatewaySeries: Most fans in America and other Western countries likely found out about ''Cyborg 009'' thanks to the 2001 anime being dubbed and aired on Creator/CartoonNetwork.
* GeniusBonus: For the '68 series (in regards to the episode with Cyborg X), [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobalt_bomb how dangerous a Cobalt Bomb actually is]]. It's not as explosive as an Uranium Bomb, but it's the most radioactive bomb ever conceived. It's been over '''65 years''' and this bomb is still only hypothetical. [[note]] That was the point Leo Szilard, the man who conceived the theory of a cobalt bomb, was trying to make; he wanted others to realize that nuclear weapon technology would soon reach the point where it could end human life on Earth. A doomsday device, more or less.[[/note]]
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: Much like other cult classic anime, Cyborg 009 seems to have a stronger following outside of Japan in Italy.
** It's also pretty well loved in Latin America.
* SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments: At the end of the fight between 0010 plus and minus in the 2001 adaptation, [[spoiler: 009 walks up to their burned bodies while talking about how they are brothers but could not come in contact with each other or else they would die. The next shot shows 002 through 008, all worn out from the battle and supporting each other by holding their hands and propping each other up with their arms.]]
* HilariousInHindsight: The 2001 anime wouldn't be the only time Creator/TakahiroSakurai [[Anime/DokiDokiPrecure would voice a character named Joe]].
* InternetBackdraft: Sometimes the matter of 008's original design [[RuleOfCautiousEditingJudgment can cause heated fissures in discussion about it]]. One argument is that Ishinomori's intent was to use caricatured designs for him and cyborgs 006 and 005 while juxtaposing serious character portrayals to make viewers ''not'' judge them on those appearances, while others chalk the designs up to the general ValuesDissonance in early manga (also witnessed with other artists of the time).
* MoralEventHorizon:
** Omega sinks below this within after two minutes of screen-time in the "Cyborg X" episode of the '68 series, shocking X for his "human" thoughts.
** If you thought [[spoiler: Von Bogoot]] wasn't enough of an asshole when he [[spoiler: used Joe's {{Forgotten Childhood Friend}}s as pawns and killed them when they hesitated to murder him]], then him [[spoiler: murdering the five Pu'Awak sisters in cold blood and ''gloating'' about it]] will definitely convince you.
** Emperor does a lot of questionable things in ''Call of Justice'', but [[spoiler:wiping Catalina's entire mind down to her base instincts]] definitely crossed a line.
* {{Narm}}: From the episode "Friend" in the 2001 anime's English dub: "That only proves one thing... [[CaptainObvious BLACK GHOST IS EVIILLLL!]]"
* NightmareFuel: [[NightmareFuel/{{Cyborg009}} Plenty.]]
* ParanoiaFuel: The Black Ghost Organization has agents scouring the world for people they can make ''disappear''. At least one of the main heroes [[spoiler: (005 aka Geronimo Junior)]] was actually ''sold'' to the organization by his ''boss''. Oh, and they're big fans of WarForFunAndProfit.
** Not to mention, the fact that it ''is'' global. Not only does that mean that pretty much no one is safe, but the sheer scale of the area they're abducting from means that it's all but impossible for anyone to make connections between the kidnappings and find the common thread.
* TearJerker: [[TearJerker/{{Cyborg009}} LOTS of them.]]
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: How some feel about the 2012 movie. What with its ConspicuousCG and drastic redesigns for some of the characters. 002's design being the most drastic and complained about, as not only he becomes a blond but ''loses'' his GagNose. [[http://takigawa.tumblr.com/post/21790821917/009-recyborg002%E3%82%B8%E3%82%A7%E3%83%83%E3%83%88%E3%83%AA%E3%83%B3%E3%82%AF Here it is, if you wonder.]] It should be noted, however, that his nose is still [[http://31.media.tumblr.com/7faccc2dbf21542764eeb8540d8099c6/tumblr_mqxvm8YGNG1rljy4lo1_500.png rather big]], it's just being portrayed more realistically.
** The fact that the "Conclusion: God's War" manga and light novel apparently diverge drastically from Ishinomori's original notes in parts, as well as coming off unnecessarily DarkerAndEdgier, has lead to this reaction among the Japanese fanbase. The anime version (which itself only covered part of the story and ended off on a cliffhanger) is regarded by some as being closer to his intent, even with the Big Bad swapped out to be Queen Himiko.
** "Battle with the Gods" incurred a very vocal reaction of this back when it was published in COM, with fans widely criticizing the "ugly" art in the arc and not being fond of Ishinomori's style change- in both narrative and art style. The scene with 009 and 003 [[spoiler: depicted having sex]] only spiked the controversy further. This was one of the factors that lead to the arc abruptly cutting off.
** The Archaia graphic novel also garnered a preemptive negative reception of "Cyborg 009 ruined by Americans", due to the modernizing of the story, the feeling that Joe's design was whitewashed, and other cosmetic changes such as 002 once again becoming blond and more conventionally attractive. The fact that it compressed elements of "Birth" through "Yomi" into one story also left some fans feeling disappointed, although the novel is also well-liked by many others in spite of these issues.
* UnfortunateImplications: 008's original design, despite the very ''anti''-racist tone of the manga in itself. Toned down in later adaptations, like the 1980 movie and the 2001 series- where Pyunma looks much less caricatured. ([[http://takigawa.tumblr.com/post/21791068037/o-o-%E6%98%A0%E7%94%BB009-recyborg%E7%A5%9E%E5%B1%B1%E5%81%A5%E6%B2%BB%E7%9B%A3%E7%9D%A3-%E5%8E%9F%E4%BD%9C-%E3%82%B5%E3%82%A4%E3%83%9C%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B0009 And here is his re-design for the 2012 movie]], where he gains a BadassBeard and looks quite normal.) His 2001 design also carries over to Archaia's American graphic novel adaptation.
* ValuesDissonance: As the lone female 00-cyborg, 003's portrayal as TheChick and her lack of any offensive powers doesn't go over as well today as it did back when the manga was written. Later adaptions try to avert this by upping her ActionGirl moments but [[FauxActionGirl they aren't always successful.]]
* ValuesResonance: The team is not only multinational, but all the members consider themselves as TrueCompanions and treat each other with respect and affection no matter their differences. Not to mention the whole anti-war and anti-discrimination theme.
