* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic:
** Columns III has arguably the best soundtrack in the franchise, with a particular fan favorite being [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1vqGGRwODw Chinese Bicycle]]. Morihiko Akiyama did a fantastic job.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGd2aBceFxg Scene of Carnage]], the final battle music in the game, finds its way into several fan works.
* CultClassic: Never got even remotely close to the popularity of [[VideoGame/PuyoPuyo SEGA's other falling block series]], but still has a decently sized following thanks to having its own unique take on the FallingBlocks genre.
* DemonicSpiders: In ''Columns II'', some blocks will turn into skull blocks. Clearing out a skull block will cause the bottom of the playfield to rise up by a few cells.
* NintendoHard: Detractors will be quick to point out that ''Columns'' is a beginner's game due to being able to make lucky chains through making the right match by accident. Now try setting up huge chains ''on purpose''.
* While the first few levels are relatively tame, there's a huge difficulty increase near the final levels in ''Columns III''. Starting from the Mimic, opponents play a lot smarter and faster than you.
* OlderThanTheyThink: If you're familiar with the series' more intricate physics, you'll notice that some of them[[note]]in particular, the delay between a piece hitting the floor and it locking, fast sideways movement, and the delay between piece lock and the next piece[[/note]] are taken out of Sega's 1988 ''VideoGame/{{Tetris}}'' game.
