* AlternativeJokeInterpretation: In "Total Validation," is Steve's argument that Toy Movie 3 is materialist and pro-slavery meant to be an earnest AuthorTract against Toy Story or a satire of snobbish movie buffs who take Disney movies too literally?
* DiagnosedByTheAudience: Much like his previous incarnations, it's never explained whether or not Baby Cakes has some sort of development disorder or is just a manchild.
* GrowingTheBeard: While season one is by no means considered bad, season two is where the show toned down the weirdness for its own sake and has significantly more CharacterDevelopment thanks to it shifting from a quarter hour to half an hour, which fans consider a massive improvement.
* HarsherInHindsight: Dr. Cakes, a professor at a college where most of the male faculty hit on their female students, is voiced by Creator/JeffreyTambor... who'd later be fired from Series/Transparent and blacklisted for sexual harassment. Worse, one episode shows him with an entire classroom of attractive, scantly-clad young women, with obvious ulterior motives.
* JerkassWoobie: Frank is a sniveling manchild and only barely competent at anything, none the lest of which his own job, but it clearly all stems from severe self-esteem issues brought on by a lifetime of living in the shadow of his older brother, who not only continues to pick on him well into adulthood but is a terrible influence.
* NightmareFuel:
** Just about all of "Secret Society", from massive squick of old women strippers, humans turning into animals through potion and killing anything and having sex with everything to Steve killing a girl's dog graphically.
** Charlize has the death fog which killed the entire world in a brutal way. If they didn't die from the fog/choking to death, they died from the people who died from it (plane crashing, bulldozer hitting the building, being hit by a taxi).
* RetroactiveRecognition: That’s Creator/GretaGerwig as Pony, well before she came to wider prominence as a director.
* Squick
** Pony having sex with a giant bedbug. Just... ew.
** Steve's mother flirting with him in "Parents Day" is only slightly less gross.
* ValuesResonance: The fact that Crystal Peppers is all but stated to be transgender and has her identity respected by everybody is progressive even by today's standards, especially since that her character doesn't revolve around her status as a trans woman, as she is a snarky JerkWithAHeartOfGold.
