* AbandonShipping: A large amount of Mike and Lucy shippers did this with [[spoiler: Mike's revelation of his hatred of Lucy in "December."]]
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Did Mike simply outgrow the crush and [[http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c51/p13.html isn't interested?]] Or is it embarrassment after [[http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c45/p5.html all he said]] leading to him trying even harder to forget it?
* AngstWhatAngst: Stunningly for a series otherwise chock full of drama: [[spoiler:Lucy]] seems not to suffer from any long term effects after [[spoiler:almost being raped]]. No nightmares, no PTSD, no flashbacks. [[spoiler:She]] just carries on as if nothing had happened. One might argue that [[spoiler:she's]] just such a badass that [[spoiler:she]] didn't need any counseling, but [[spoiler:Daisy]] also does not seem to suffer from any psychological trauma even though [[spoiler:she basically stood and watched helplessly, utterly incapable of helping as her friend was pinned to the ground and groped, about to get raped]].
** WordOfGod has stated that, were she to redo the series, [[OldShame she would have never included the Confrontation chapter]].
* {{Anvilicious}}: [[http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c28.1/p1.html BEING GAY IS A-OKAY!]]
* ArchiveBinge: Not the hugest, but growing. The entire archive is current working on 800 pages. If you want to comment, reading it all probably wouldn't hurt as a start. And this archive is hardly '''all''' there is to see. [[http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/candybooru/ Booru]], [[http://taeshilh.deviantart.com/ DA]], [[http://topwebcomics.com/vote/10137/default.aspx voting in TWC]], and a chatroom.
%% 805 pages, counting intermissions, in the main archive with the conclusion of chapter 64.
** This is part of the reason Taeshi recommends new readers start at "Part 2" of the story.
* {{Asspull}}: [[spoiler:Lucy's suicide attempt, or ''whatever'' happened to her]] comes off as this, considering that [[spoiler:the last time we saw her before this, she and Mike were starting to reconcile]].
** [[spoiler:Then again, a typical thing that suicidal people can do is to have a single day of unnatural jubilation, doing unexpected things (perhaps in a bucket-list) sort of way, before fully committing suicide. Complimenting Sue for her play, making out with Paulo, and assuring Mike that they could start over as friends were perhaps Lucy's bucket list before she 'went on the bus'. Out of nowhere, yes, but this would be a justifiable reason.]]
** Were they really [[spoiler:starting to reconcile? Lucy seemed very not okay the whole last chapter before she vanished. Mike makes a very lacking attempt at rebuilding their connection, and Lucy just says "that'd be nice" which sounds like there's an implied "...if it wasn't already too late" in there.]]
*** This was all but outright [[spoiler:confirmed]] in "Love Again". [[spoiler::Lucy was already transferring when Mike confronted her, and even asks herself why Mike had to say what he did after - to her - the point of no return.]]
* BaseBreaker: Whoo boy. It seems that every one of the main characters have both fans who love them and fans who hate them. Most of it comes from shipping, though many of the criticisms also come from that they all seemed to have TookALevelInJerkass somewhere throughout the series. Not even [[NiceGirl Daisy]] is safe from this, with some fans thinking she is extremely hypocritical and many of her actions being different from the personality she tries to present, especially with her treatment of Abbey from the UnintentionallyUnsympathetic post.
** [[spoiler: Fans are torn on weather or not the sex between Melanie and Augustus was consensual.]]
* BrokenBase: Abbey being coerced by Paulo in [[spoiler: getting back with Daisy]]. While some are happy that [[spoiler: Abbey and Daisy are getting back together again]] a lot of readers are openly disgusted with the treatment of Abbey receives from Paulo who constantly insults him and takes a stab at his [[spoiler: dead mother ''in front of everyone in class'']] and receives no repercussion whatsoever afterwards. Readers are also disappointed in [[spoiler: Daisy]] for not lifting a finger to stop the abuse and basically using Paulo to [[spoiler: make Abbey date her again, even though Abbey makes it clear that it's over between them]]. And finally [[spoiler: Abbey himself is guilt tripped into getting back with Daisy by Paulo, making the turn of events veer closely into UnfortunateImplications territory.]]
** Now there's a BrokenBase as to whether Abbey's [[IfYouEverDoAnythingToHurtHer response]] to the above and to Paulo's continued fawning over Daisy ([[spoiler: Throwing him against a bathroom wall and choking him whilst calling Paulo out on his [[TheCasanova Casanova]] tendencies and demanding that he stay away from Daisy]]) was justified.
* CrackPairing: Due to the fact that there are so many characters here that there's bound to be someone shipping two or three characters whom have never met or barely interacted with. It got even worse when the [[https://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/candybooru/post/list/BCB_Art_Meme/1 Official BCB Art Meme]] had you forcing two characters; one that you like and the other that you don't like, to make out. Hell some people unintentionally found their new OTP because of [[https://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/candybooru/post/view/9839 this]].
** One of the most well-known ones is [[https://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/candybooru/post/list/davidxsue/1 DavidxSue]], the reason some fans like this ship mostly just stems from the fact that seeing complete opposites get together seems rather cute. It got to the point that Taeshi made a [[https://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/img/graveyard/anotherplan.png comic]] with them in it.(Although it's busy rotting in the Graveyard so it's left up in the air what is Taeshi's opinion on the ship.)
** [[SarcasmMode The True Ending]][[http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/candybooru/post/view/2434 to BCB]].
* DarknessInducedAudienceApathy: The complete 180 from the play arc's heartwarming recovery to the "Break Up" arc's soulcrushing, bleak tragedy has instilled this in some readers.
* DieForOurShip: An alarmingly high portion of fans have unreasonably hostile opinions of those making up the ship not their own. Such as blaming Sandy for everything, in spite of her having '''absolutely''' ''nothing'' to do with Paulo's problems, little to do with Lucy's, and nothing to do with Michael's recent behavior with Lucy, other helping realize how toxic Lucy is for him. Sandy shippers do similar with Lucy as the one to blame. It can be... disconcerting.
* DracoInLeatherPants: There's a portion of the fandom who says Augustus has done absolutely nothing wrong. There is also the portion of the fans who ignore Mike's harshness toward Lucy, in spite of her [[JerkassFacade facade]] having mostly faded already. To be fair, Lucy is no innocent on acting harsh herself.
** There's also those who easily overlooks or glorifies Paulo's nasty attitude towards his friends, who is shown to attack Mike in a total of three times in an unprovoked state due to [[spoiler: Mike's role in Lucy's moving due to him calling out her treatment towards him in a justified, if harsh fashion]], and is also shown to bully Abbey and assist Daisy in [[DestructiveRomance going back into a relationship with her against his wishes and without any consideration for his feelings whatsoever]].
* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** Amaya (has no speaking lines), [=McCain=] (has few speaking lines), and Liam (hasn't even appeared in the comic proper) are more popular on the forums than one would think.
** Another example might be Larken.
** Liam shows up as [[http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c62/p2.html background]] filler at times. The second link also has Amaya and Larken.
** Augustus is much more popular than one would expect, to the point that a number of fans act like he's done absolutely nothing or planned to. And the fans that hate him go nuts when he shows up, fearing he'll do more stuff he has never done in the first place.
** The recurring turtle character who appears at random to trip the cast begining in "Field Day" (although canonically he was around since the first chapter, which was published later on as a replacement for the original first chapter) seems to have grown slightly more popular. [[http://askbcb.tumblr.com/ Especially on the Ask BCB Tumblr page.]]
** Matt or as [[FanNickname Fans like to call him]] "Oreo Cat" or any other variation. Ever since his debut in Chapter 81 fans liked him because he was rather cute and [[GentleGiant nice]], fans began to love him even more when it was revealed that he was gay and had a crush on Jordan.
Making him along with Jessica to be one of the only confirmed gay characters.
* FanPreferredCouple: [[spoiler: AugustusxLucy, it started when Chapter.95 Love Again revealed that when Lucy committed suicide, Augustus was there to help her and call for an ambulance. It got even more popularity after the first thing Lucy did when she first saw him was to run up to him and hug him.]]
** [[spoiler: It continued to grow even more when Lucy invited him to her house and her parents more or less Adopt him. Even if Taeshi herself made a comment about how the AugustusxLucy ship "sunk", fans are still going strong with this particular ship.]]
* GrowingTheBeard: Volume one is hit and miss in terms of story, and the art is very amateurish, excluding the occasional arc that has been remastered. It is for this reason that the authors recommend that new readers start at volume two.
* HarsherInHindsight: Mike's status as a complete ButtMonkey becomes this as the consequences play out.
* HollywoodPudgy: Daisy, though rounder and pudgier than the other female characters, has quite a typical body shape for a teenage girl in the early stages of puberty. However some of the comments act like she's unhealthily overweight.
* HoYay:
** Mike and Paulo, especially in the summer vacation arc.
** David towards Mike [[http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c11/p2.html here]]. And towards Abbey at times. Maybe.
* [[UnnecessaryMakeover Impromptu Makeover]]: [[http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c18/p6.html Lucy]] got one. She was unhappy with the result.
* JerkassWoobie: Augustus [[spoiler:losing the girl he likes permanently]] was a bit sadder than expected.
** Also Lucy in recent chapters.
* LauncherOfAThousandShips: Mike and Paulo could easily end up with any of the girl classmates, and some people have even paired Mike and Paulo together!
* LovingAShadow: May have very well been the case for Mike's past feelings for Lucy. Most of the comics in Volume 1 from before the Acapulco arc and the flashback in "Pillow Talk" shown hi romantic interest in her, but after he reveals his hatred for her and how he never saw her as a friend, as well as how quickly he hooked back up with Sandy, it could be implied that he only fell for her for superficial reasons (i.e. looks, proximity to him).
* MemeticBadass: Within the fandom, Alec "Badass" [=McCain=].
* MisaimedFandom: Certain sections of the fandom seem to be completely missing the point of all the deconstruction, taking sides and defending their chosen character's actions regardless of how nasty it gets.
* {{Moe}}: Molly
** Pretty much all of the girls at some point.
* NightmareFuel:
** There's probably at least a few people who thought that the incentive chapter "Disaster Dominoes" was a little creepy...
** The mild violence in "Confrontation" can bring up some nightmare fuel about being [[spoiler: beaten up and nearly raped by a gangster.]]
** The easter egg on [[http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/store/figurine/ the figurine promo page.]]
-->[[spoiler: ''It's not like she wants to kill you or anything.'']]
* RonTheDeathEater: There is a portion of the fandom that says Lucy is a complete and unrepentant JerkAss. Mike gets the exact same treatment from his detractors. There are also those who say Tess is evil, in spite of her constant efforts to avert her past status as a jerk. This has also occurred with Sandy in at least one fanfic where she is shown to be vengeful, jealous and murderous, due to the author disliking her.
** Abbey also get this treatment from the fanbase lately due to his hatred towards Paulo, culminating in him assaulting Paulo as of recent, causing many to decry him as an irredeemable monster. While Abbey's attack on Paulo isn't fully justified, most tend to forget that Paulo spends the majority of his time with Abbey antagonizing and belittling him purely for his own amusement, and in the most abhorrent way, cruelly guilt tripping Abbey into reconciling his relationship with Daisy by ridiculing him on how anybody besides Daisy can stand to be with him, and then finishes his argument by ''bringing up Abbey's deceased mother in front of the entire class''. While Abbey certainly has anger issues and can be violent at the worst of times, he is shown to try to come to terms with his own problems and trying his best to be a decent individual and friend...just not towards Paulo.
* StrawmanHasAPoint: In spite of his issues, Abbey has [[http://askbcb.tumblr.com/post/128946115681 justified reasons to dislike Paulo...at least most of them.]]
* ToyShip: [[http://taeshilh.deviantart.com/art/Adventure-Shipping-179664316?q=by%3Ataeshilh+adventure&qo=0 "Adventure Shipping"]] with Molly and Justin
** Mike and Sandy in 3rd grade before Sandy moved.
** Paulo and Lucy in 5th grade.
* {{True Art Is Angsty}}
* UncannyValley: If Carter actually ''is'' a cat, [[http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c33.1/p3.html his family]] provokes it.
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Daisy receives a brutal breakup from Abbey, causing her to retreat to Paulo to apologize for her past behaviour to him, and declares that she cares for him more than his attempt to bring Daisy and Abbey back together in the end. It is portrayed as a heartwarming scene and a declaration of childhood friendship rising above hard times. However, Daisy was shown to have willingly allowed Paulo to guilt trip her ex-boyfriend Abbey into reconciling their relationship in a nasty manner that is mentioned in BrokenBase, and also consistently downplayed or had never called Paulo out on his bullying towards her boyfriend without much concern for his mental well-being (except for the one time when she did, which had caused Paulo to stop being friends with Daisy at first), which leads to Abbey attacking Paulo over his Cassanova tendencies and the bullying once he reaches his limit. Once Daisy finds out and tries to make amends to Paulo, she retracts her initial impression of Paulo having bullied Abbey, and states that the entire scenario is all because of her boyfriend and that Abbey was wrong to not see how she sees Paulo, [[NeverMyFault all while completely glossing over both of their roles in how they took advantage of Abbey and put him back in a toxic relationship with Daisy against his wishes, thus starting the whole mess in the first place, and then pinning all the blame on him for not handling it better than he should]], thus causing [[UnintentionallySympathetic Abbey to break up with Daisy for being forced into being her token boyfriend again, and for being flippant of Paulo's bullying towards him once too many times for him to tolerate]].
* ValuesDissonance: Not the comic itself, but the fandom wishes the same things on certain characters that they'd be unhappy to see happen to others. Quite common in DieForOurShip situations.
* TheWoobie: Pretty much everyone but David has gotten woobie time in the main cast. But [[http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c37.1/p2.html Wynn]] from Out Of The Frame deserves special mention.
