* BrokenBase: ''To Drink from the Night Itself''. Was it a good follow up to ''At War with Reality'' or even ''Slaughter of the Soul''? Or was it a disappointing mess that just so happened to be tampered by Century Media[[note]]a major label, as of 2015 had been purchased by Sony[[/note]]?
** There's also people that prefer the band's [=OSDM=] material and others that prefer their melodeath output. However there are [[TakeAThirdOption people that prefer both sides of the coin]].
* FandomRivalry: With ''Music/DarkTranquillity'' and, to a lesser degree, ''Music/InFlames'', depending on who you ask. Unfounded, as all three bands have toured together, were once signed to the same label - Century Media Records, and helped each other from time to time.
* ItsPopularNowItSucks: Considering it's one of the greatest metal albums of all time, ''Slaughter of the Soul'' is bound to get some hate. It's even their lowest rated pre-breakup album on [[https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/At_the_Gates/43 Encyclopedia Metallum]] due to some metal purists resenting it for being a major influence on melodic metalcore.
* OnceOriginalNowCommon: Tons of {{Metalcore}} bands have copied the sound displayed on ''Slaughter of the Soul'', therefore it can be hard for first-time listeners to figure out what was so special about it.
* SignatureSong: "Blinded by Fear", the opening track of ''Slaughter of the Soul''.
* ToughActToFollow: At the Gates released ''Slaughter of the Soul'' in 1995. Then they disbanded on a good note. Oh, wait! 2014 brought us ''At War with Reality'', and although it was critically acclaimed it's not on par with ''Slaughter''. Their next two albums, ''To Drink from the Night Itself'' and ''The Nightmare of Being'' would, unfortunately, suffer a similar fate.
* VindicatedByHistory: As with OnceOriginalNowCommon; the huge influence of ''Slaughter of the Soul'' towards the melodic metalcore subgenre, coupled with the fact that Main/{{Metalcore}} itself has become a DeadHorseGenre leads to ''Slaughter'' becoming a significant album in heavy metal history. It is now seen as one of the four highly-influential MelodicDeathMetal albums along with ''[[Music/{{Carcass}} Heartwork]]'', ''[[Music/DarkTranquillity The Gallery]]'', and ''[[Music/InFlames The Jester Race]]''.
