* AlternateCharacterInterpretation
** Gabu and Mei: ForbiddenFriendship or StarcrossedLovers? Have at it.
** That Gabu [[spoiler:never got amnesia and was trying to forget everything he and Mei experienced.]]
** Was Gabu staring at Mei's rear because he was hungry or...
*** WordOfGod was that that scene was an intentional allusion to the MarilynMonroe walk.
* AnimationAgeGhetto: Subverted! This is supposed to be a kids movie and yet it was popular enough among older anime fans to get an unofficial English dub. The English dub exists on Website/YouTube ''with the permission of the original producers'' largely because [[NoExportForYou they have no intention of ever localizing it in English]].
* GRatedSex: Possibly. As they're preparing to leave the secret cave Gabu hides them both in during the wolf attack, the pair's conversation turns to the full moon and how much they simply enjoy being with each other. It gets quite emotional, and the camera pans away as they decide to skip going home and just spend the night in the cave together.
* ItChangedNowItSucks: The cartoon series. The fact that it's CGI and Mei is a girl did not help ''at all''.
* LGBTFanbase: Well, we've got an AmbiguouslyGay goat and wolf, an endearing story that could be interpreted as a love story, and [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything two characters who just want to be together despite what both of their societies think of their relationship]].
* MemeticMutation:
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OM3mT3NNA It's Mei!]]
** Mei's butt is a meme in itself, more precisely the scene where we're forced to watch Gabu drool over it.
* {{Moe}}: Mei and Gabu, though its hard to tell which one is the better example...
* ValuesDissonance:
** Controversy exists over the homoerotic overtones of the anime. WordOfGod confirmed that, in actuality, Mei was ''always'' intended to be a male character, but was written in the children's books as gender-ambiguous so that he'd appeal as much if he were female as if he were male. The film merely restored that gender specificity.
* ViewerGenderConfusion: That incredibly adorable, doe-eyed goat who sports a pink scarf and has a deep friendship with a male wolf is a ''boy''. It's especially noticeable due to his [[VocalDissonance masculine voice]].
* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: Oh, UsefulNotes/{{Japan}}.
* TheWoobie: Mei is just so ''gosh darn cute'' when he's being terrified.
** Gabu as well, [[spoiler:being teased by the other wolves as a pup, and that his punishment for saving Mei is to [[FelonyMisdemeanor spend the night in a dry well.]]]] He is definitely this when Mei tells him [[spoiler: that the only option for either of them to survive is for Gabu to eat him. Gabu completely breaks down weeping, and when he leaves the burrow, he starts searching for grass to feed Mei, hinting that he'd rather ''starve to death'' than do it.]]
