* JerkassWoobie: Greta is ''not'' an easy person to like or get along with with her volatile temper, relentless caustic sarcasm and general abrasiveness. But her backstory and the fact that she is genuinely struggling with both the trauma of her dad's suicide and her own suicidal feelings can't help but make her sympathetic.
* MoralEventHorizon: Just between Julie and Greta when Greta decides to take her own life in front of the rest of her family, Julie says he has to let her go because he can't go through that again.
* SpiritualSuccessor: Shares some elements of Lizzie [=MacGuire=] such as running commentary/drawings and personal journal-like expression of experiences, albeit with Greta ''considerably'' more caustic than Lizzie.
* SugarWiki/SheReallyCanAct: Hilary Duff surprised a lot of people with her portrayal of Greta, both in handling a far more serious role and in playing someone so removed from her usual roles and doing so very convincingly, making Greta both believably caustic and still sympathetic.
* TooBleakStoppedCaring: It's pretty dark and was maybe held from a major release due to this sort of thing.
