[-"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome at this time, Alberto Del Rio's personal Website/TVTropes announcer, Ricardo Rodriguez!"-]

[-"¡Damas y caballeros! Aquí es mi gran honor de presentar la esencia de excelencia, el campeón mundial de pesocompleto del WWE y el orgullo de la gente de México...-]Ladies and gentlemen! It is now my great honor to present the essence of excellence, the world heavyweight champion of the WWE and the pride of the people of Mexico...

Jose Alberto Rodríguez, (born May 25, 1977) is a Mexican linger who debuted in the year 2000 for Wrestling/AAA as Dos Caras, Jr.. He turned to pro wrestling and mixed martial arts after budget constraints prevented Mexico from sending an amateur to the Olympics. AAA would allow him to also make appearances for Wrestling/AllJapanProWrestling, DEEP, Wrestling/ProWrestlingZERO1, [=BattleArts=] and Pride Fighting. Between 2010 and 2014 he worked for Wrestling/WWE as Alberto Del Rio, before becoming a free agent and wrestling in AAA, Wrestling/RingOfHonor, and Wrestling/LuchaUnderground, under the name El Patrón Alberto / Alberto El Patrón (arrangement depending on the promotion).

On October 25, 2015, Del Rio made a surprise return to WWE, defeating Wrestling/JohnCena to win the United State Championship, becoming the second AAA champion (after Wrestling/Konnan) to hold the US title simultaneously. However, his second WWE run quickly fizzled out, as he fell down the card and got suspended for violating the Wellness policy. Utilizing an opt-out clause in his contract, Del Rio left WWE again in September 2016 and returned to the indie circuit, eventually finding his way to Impact Wrestling in March 2017. Still more recently, he and Wrestling/ChavoGuerreroJr announced they had started a new Mexican promotion, Nación Lucha Libre, in June 2019.

He is a two-time WWE Champion, and two-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Prior to working with WWE, he wrestled as in Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), winning the World Heavyweight Championship in 2007. During his time out of WWE, he has won AAA's Mega Championship and the World Wrestling League Heavyweight Championship. He also has wrestled in AOL, AULL, LL VIP, IWRG, WCPW, Luchas 2000, Toryumon México and Wrestling/TheGreatMuta's Wrestle-1.

----
!! "Tropes asociados con Alberto Del Rio":
* AbortedArc: His ShipTease with SpicyLatina Wrestling/RosaMendes when he was a heel was dropped when he turned face.
* TheAce
** Dos Caras held the CMLL heavyweight title for 533 days.
** El Patrón Alberto managed to become AAA Mega Champion and WWL World Heavyweight Champion at the same time in 2015, which is even more impressive as he did this after the two organizations ended their affiliation.
** And then he returned to WWE and instantly became the United States Champion after beating Wrestling/JohnCena while still holding the two above titles. So he literally held titles at the same time for three companies that each had no association nor inclination to cooperate with each other on much.
* AllAmericanFace: Despite being undeniably Mexican, his face persona contained elements of the all-American hero, defending the idea of America as a land of opportunity and equality against the anti-immigrant xenophobe of "Real American" Jack Swagger.
* AffablyEvil: As a heel for the first time in his WWE career, he'd often wears a smile some would consider charming...but don't be fooled. (See FauxAffablyEvil.)
* AlphaBitch: A male example during his first heel run; "I'm handsome! I'm powerful! I'm RICH! I'M EVERYTHING!!" The ego, the attitude, the fancy cars, the white scarf, he had an aura of being a male example (and is listed as such on the AlphaBitch page).
* ArchEnemy: Wrestling/ReyMysterioJr, Wrestling/Sheamus, Wrestling/RandyOrton and Wrestling/TheBigShow, Wrestling/JackSwagger, Wrestling/DolphZiggler and Wrestling/SinCara.
** In Lucha Underground, he started out carrying over his feud with Texano Jr., but shifted his attention to Johnny Mundo after Mundo put Alberto through Dario Cueto's window.
* ArrogantKungFuGuy: Though he was technically a face, Alberto made it pretty public that any wrestler in Lucha Underground was fair game to him. In fact, his two most intense promos were on Prince Puma and Johnny Mundo, at the time the Temple's most popular guys.
* TheArtifact: His scarf. He wore during his first heel run to show off his aristocratic roots. But once he turned face, it wasn't the main part of his character, nor is it part his current heel character.
* Boss Patrón: As a heel he didn't do much to protect his extremely hammy ring announcer, Ricardo Rodriguez. Rodriguez seems to have two jobs: One, to announce Del Rio's entrance to the ring (in Spanish, of course), and two, to act as Del Rio's unwilling HumanShield. A lot of Del Rio's confrontations with other face wrestlers end with Alberto rolling out of the ring and leaving Ricardo behind to take the other guy's FinishingMove. This is now averted now that he's a face, he actually tries to stop the attacks, with the result of him sometimes getting attacked as well.
** FIRMLY cemented as a BadBoss after laying out Ricardo for inadvertently costing him a non-title match and kicking the steel steps with Ricardo's head sandwiched in between said steps and the ring.
** They made back up after both getting released from WWE, so it's back to BenevolentBoss.
* BashBrothers: With his younger brother El Hijo del Dos Caras in WWC
* BecauseDestinySaysSo:
** After weeks of telling everyone that it was his dessssssstiny to win the 2011 Royal Rumble, he won it.
** And now, he has added "WWE Champion" to his fulfilled prophecies. And while it took a year and a half and a face turn, the "World Heavyweight Champion" has been added to that list.
* Boss Patrón:
** Played with during a September 2012 storyline/promo where Alberto calls Ricardo his only friend for pushing him out of the way of a Brogue Kick from Sheamus, resulting in Ricardo getting injured (knocked unconscious) as a result.
** He acknowledged the fact he had treated Ricardo poorly, during the December 31 2012 episode of Raw when Ricardo been chosen by Big Show as his opponent (All the champions got to choose their opponents for the night). He interfered on the behalf of Ricardo when Show was going to go for his Finisher after being dominant for most of the match.
* BerserkButton: Face or heel, God help you if you screw with Ricardo. Averted after his second heel turn and beating down Ricardo himself.
* BigDamnHeroes: He made his AAA debut saving his father for a beat down.
* BilingualBonus:
** Del Rio has made a habit of cussing quite a lot in Spanish when he's angry or excited.
** That wink he does also has more negative connotations in Mexico and many Mediterranean countries than it does in the States.
** Ricardo Rodriguez also has a different over-the-top introduction for Alberto Del Rio each time out, usually complete with a diss about how Alberto is greater or richer than the fans or the city they're in. Many fans probably have no clue what exactly he is saying, yet for ForeignWrestlingHeel reasons, this still gets heel heat. For anyone fluent, or even passable in Spanish, Del Rio and Rodriguez are hilarious. Live events and untaped segments are where they shine as a comedy duo. Ricardo's constantly trying to make Del Rio break character and vice versa.
** In a non-cursing example of the Bonus, El Patrón means The Boss.
* BoringButPractical:
** His floatover arm bar finisher, though the floatover itself is a pretty cool transition. A more accurate way descriptor would be simple but practical.
** At his DarkestHour in one of his Last Man Standing matches with Wrestling/TheBigShow, he managed to beat the count by simply sliding his legs out of the ring and onto the floor.
* TheBully[=/=]KickTheDog: He seems to be obsessed with people (even people not feuding with him) and doing whatever he can to break their arms.
* BullyHunter: As a face
* BullyingADragon[=/=]TooDumbToLive:
** Maybe Alberto thought Wrestling/TheBigShow, being the GentleGiant he usually is, wouldn't mind Alberto bitch-slapping him and running him down with a car. This turned out not to be the case.
** He would be at it again after taking the World Heavyweight Championship.
* CaptainErsatz: The approximate likeness of Dos Caras Jr. got to join his father in the 2005 Videogame/FireProWrestling Returns.
* CardCarryingVillain: He once said he wants to beat Wrestling/ReyMysterioJr so he [Alberto] can see children crying in the audience.
* CatchPhrase:
--> "My name is Alberto Del Rio! But you...you already know that."
* CombatPragmatist:
** He definitely holds to the philosophy of "It's not cheating if you don't get caught."
** He tipped an entire announcer table onto The Big Show to keep him down for the 10-count to win the WHC.
** He taped Wrestling/TheBigShow's feet to the bottom rope during their Last Man Standing match at the Royal Rumble, to ensure he'd stay down for the ten count.
** More than once, he used a fire-extinguisher to blind the Wrestling/TheBigShow and then knock him out.
** His strategy against Wrestling/DolphZiggler, who recently came back after a month-long absence due to a concussion, at WWE Payback essentially consisted of kicking and slamming Ziggler on his head until he couldn't get back up.
* CompositeCharacter: Of JBL Wrestling/Christian even called him "Juan Bradshaw Layfield" once., Wrestling/Ted DiBiase, and Wrestling/EddieGuerrero.
* ConspicuousConsumption: John Cena thought it was an act, claiming no one could possibly own as many cars as Alberto Del Rio implied he did when he brought out a new one for every entrance. (Funny coming from Cena, who's an avid collector who owns at least 20 cars himself.)
* CoolCar:
** His entrance as a heel involved him driving a different high-class car every time. This stopped once he has turned face.
** WatchThePaintJob And never, EVER mess with his cars! Just ask Big Show...
* CoolMask: As Dos Caras Jr. Averted as Alberto Del Rio.
* CoolVersusAwesome: So the popular WWL Heavyweight Champion Glamour Boy Shane is being attacked while Savio Vega announces his trials are only going to get harder when El Patrón Alberto comes. Does the crowd boo? They cheer at the sight of El Patrón.
* CrossOver: Alberto was fighting for the Lucha Underground title, but also as a representative of Wrestling/AAA, as he was at the time the promotion's Mega Champion.
* CrowdChant: And a BorrowedCatchphrase of sorts. Whenever going for the Cross Armbreaker, sometimes the crowd would chant "Si! Si! Si!".
* CrowdSong: Some fans (most depending on what area they're in) inevitably try to imitate Ricardo's several-minute long yell.
* CurbStompBattle: Interrupted a training session Ray González Jr. was taking part in under the guise of offering his own time and expertise when he was really there to break Junior's arm as a message to his dad.
* DashingHispanic: Well, he certainly thinks he is this. The Bellas and Rosa wouldn't disagree. This was eventually played straight when he became a Face.
* Determinator:
** A chokeslam and a WMD from Wrestling/TheBigShow and he still managed to stand up before a 10-count.
** He was a bit cunning at that point, after being hit by WMD, he knew he wouldn't get up in time, so he rolled to the edge of the ring and put his feet on the floor, thus breaking the officials 10 count.
* DragonInChief: He's technically the hanger-on to the Gentlemen's Club, which is lead by WWL President Richard Negrín. But it's El Patrón Alberto who is the dual World Heavyweight Champion!
* EpicFail:
** At Money in the Bank 2011, he attempted to pull a YourPrincessIsInAnotherCastle on Wrestling/CMPunk by cashing in his [=MITB=] Briefcase after Punk had just won a grueling match with Wrestling/JohnCena. Punk casually kicked Alberto in the head and knocked him out before fleeing the building. This was in part due to Punk being savvy, having done what Del Rio had attempted to do twice in the past. Also, Wrestling/VinceMcMahon was shouting to cut the music and obviously calling for Del Rio to come out right where Punk could see it, so really this was on Vince. Although some credit has to be given to Punk, who was the first person to think of this escape method regardless of whether Vince telegraphed it or not.
** But then it happened again on the 7/25 RAW, when he tried to cash in on Rey Mysterio's "WWE Title". Alberto was so busy calling for the bell instead of getting into the ring (a match can only 'officially' start when both competitors are inside the ring and the bell has been rung) that he didn't see Mysterio go airborne. After getting hit with a suicide dive, Alberto pulls a ScrewThisImOuttaHere and retreats with his briefcase.
* Expy:
** He's basically a Mexican JBL. Wrestling/Christian lampshaded this by calling him "Juan Bradshaw Layfield" at least one time. And his entrance definitely is JBL all the way, but his actual gimmick errs much closer to that of [[Wrestling/TedDiBiase "The Million-Dollar Man" Ted [=DiBiase=]]], almost to the point that you could call him a CompositeCharacter of the two. And more recently, he seems to have adopted some of the in-ring behavior patterns from the early heel runs of Wrestling/EddieGuerrero - although one could argue he had those all along, what with his ethnicity, obvious love for nice rides, arrogant streak, and tendency to cheat as much as he can get away with doing.
** JBL himself wishes he had thought about getting his own ring announcer.
** In 2011 he got his own expy in ERLL, Alberto Dos Rios, who eventually ended up in CMLL, if only on the B Shows.
* EvilPowerVacuum: After Wrestling/CMPunk had to make a HeelFaceTurn in the wake of the "Summer of Punk", RAW no longer had a top heel, so Del Rio, who had been pushed to the moon since the beginning of the year as [=SmackDown=]s originally-intended top heel, got moved up to take his spot. Unfortunately, it became very clear early on that the crowds didn't really care about Del Rio, more annoyed at the fact that he was an unwanted ThirdWheel in the much lauded CM Punk[=/=]John Cena feud. Then he went down with an injury towards the end of the year, freeing up the position for the returning Wrestling/ChrisJericho to take over.
* Face: In Lucha Underground, albeit a cocky, mouthy one.
* FaceHeelDoubleTurn:
** His feud with Wrestling/TheBigShow is a reprise of a feud that happened a couple of years back - except the first time, Del Rio was a heel and Show was a face.
** This looks to be the case with Del Rio, who's been flagging as a face and got outright booed at Payback, and Wrestling/DolphZiggler, who the Chicago crowd got behind when he tried to overcome his concussion but fell short and lost the World Title, after which they cheered him sympathetically as he was escorted to the back by doctors
* FauxAffablyEvil: He'll be happy and smiling, even while beating you up, but his façade will occasionally crack and his face will contort with rage.
* FinishingMove: Rolling Cross Armbreaker, called Rompe Destinos (lit. "Destiny Breaker") in AAA.
* ForeignWrestlingHeel
** At first averted in WWE as he had an actual gimmick other than simply being foreign. Inverted after his HeelFaceTurn and championship win, where he now feuds as a fan favorite against a Type-2 Eagleland xenophobic heel in Wrestling/JackSwagger. Played perfectly straight in his second heel run. Notably he is the first person in his family to ever be a rudo or a heel.
** He expressed a desire to finally take up WWC on their offer and appear at their Lockout event in December 2015 to prove to "Mr. Raytings" Ray González than Mexicans were superior to Puerto Ricans. WWC accepted his terms.
* Flanderization: After he won the Royal Rumble, he proclaimed that it was his destiny to win the World Title, to go along with his entitled rich guy gimmick, with him being naturally better than anyone due to being descended from Kayfabe Mexican royalty. However, as time went on he started losing just about every other part of his gimmick outside of having Ricardo Rodriguez as a personal ring announcer and coming out in expensive cars every week. And then, after he turned face, he lost the expensive cars, too and just became a DashingHispanic.
* FleetingDemographicRule: Fans with good memories quickly recognized the method in which Del Rio won his second Last Man Standing match with Wrestling/TheBigShow - because Wrestling/JohnCena won a match with Wrestling/Batista in the same manner a few years ago.
* ForcedToWatch: This happened to him after the 2013 Royal Rumble, where Wrestling/TheBigShow taped his arms to the ropes as revenge for what he did to Show the other night and beat down Ricardo right in front of him.
* GlorySeeker: His main motivation for fighting in Lucha Underground was to further improve his already legendary career.
* GracefulLoser:
** After having lost his World Heavyweight Title Wrestling/DolphZiggler, he comes out during Ziggler's celebration on Smackdown, telling him he knew the feeling of cashing in his contract for WWE Championship title and wanted to congratulate Ziggler on his successful cash-in. But also added when his ankle was fully healed, he would use his rematch clause to regain the title.
** Perhaps not as graceful as we'd initially liked to believe, given his harsh tactics at WWE Payback. His and Ricardo's shouting away of the doctors checking on a dazed and possibly concussed Ziggler was a rather jarring IronicEcho of Ziggler when he cashed in on an injured Del Rio.
* HeelFaceTurn: The 2012 TLC PPV saw Del Rio making the save when Ricardo was being harassed by 3MB after trying to defend the Spanish announce team. He and Wrestling/TheMiz, along with the Brooklyn Brawler of all people, would team up later as Face babyfaces to defeat 3MB.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: It looked like WWE couldn't decide whether to stay with his HeelFaceTurn or not, resulting in a strange phenomenon where he was booked as a heel on some shows and as a face on others. Part of this is because of WWE taping their X-Mas specials in advance, so it's understandably confusing when you see Alberto "run down" St. Nick one week (which arguably made him look like a sympathetic heel anyway), then act like a Face and a BenevolentBoss the next week.
* HeelRealization[=/=]EvenEvilHasStandards: He then solidified his HeelFaceTurn on the last Raw of 2012, explaining to Ricardo that seeing Wrestling/TheBigShow treat him like dirt made Alberto realize how badly he had mistreated his announcer over the last several months, and promised to be at ringside to look out for Ricardo in his World Title match against the giant.
* HiddenDepths: Alberto Del Rio isn't just a once-in-a-generation marriage of the kind of look, height, and physique Vince [=McMahon=] likes with an hispanic ethnicity and ability to speak and perform in two languages fluently. Jose Alberto Rodríguez is part of the same wrestling dynasty as the famous Mil Mascaras, got a college degree in architecture, has many legitimately impressive amateur sporting credentials (he only went pro because Mexico made the controversial decision not to send a team to the Olympic games in 2000 and at 23 he didn't believe he'd still be in prime enough condition to wrestle at that level four years later), and even scored a perfectly respectable 9-5 record in MMA before coming to WWE. It's a shame that a mixture of his personal demons and the eternal specter of mid-2000s/early 2010s WWE rotten creative ensured he never quite found success there... before he ultimately destroyed himself.
* HotBlooded: Can slip into this very easily, especially in the middle of a match.
* HypocriticalHeartwarming: The whole way he treated Ricardo in his first WWE heel run. He praised Ricardo as his only true friend, the only man worthy of introducing him, and often made people pay at some point after they beat on the man. But then there's the matter of Ricardo being his occasional HumanShield and SacrificialLamb in the first place and him at times taking out frustrations on Ricardo (mostly verbally). In short, he wanted everybody to respect Ricardo but often failed to do so himself.
* IKnowKarate: Took up Greco-Roman wrestling before his pro wrestling career, training under Leonel Kolesni and Juan Fernández. He was part of the Mexican national team, placed third at the World Junior Championships in 1997, won the Central American and Caribbean Games in his weight division three times and won a medal at the Pan American Games and was on track to compete at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, but due to a lack of funding and support, Mexico did not send a wrestling team that year. He also trained for MMA under Marco Ruas.
* IncrediblyLongNote[=/=]BigWordShout: Every week Ricardo Rodriguez will drag out saying his name longer and longer. At this point, Del Rio could get to the ring, finish the match, and be back in the showers before Rodriguez is finished.
* Irony: The classist attitude his character showed towards his fellow Mexicans and the slyly-insulting smile and wink routine he did as a heel, were both thrown back at his face in real life by a racist WWE staffer in the incident that cost him his job.
* JackOfAllStats: Del Rio's PPV matches tend to feature him doing a bit of everything. He's got a couple of power moves, some moves usually used by 'speed-type' wrestlers, a bit of mat work, some pretty wicked strikes...and, of course, the Cross Armbreaker.
* Jerkass: As a heel and throughout his entire face run in Lucha Underground.
* JerkassHasAPoint: The Smackdown before the 2010 TLC PPV, Theodore Long has to deal with Del Rio and Rey Mysterio's feud and Edge's action with Kane that made him go missing. Because of the lack of promise that Kane could defend the world title, Edge's ladder match with Kane was changed into a triple threat match with Alberto Del Rio and Rey Mysterio. Alberto wasn't so excited, because if Kane does show up to compete, he loses the opportunity. He makes a reasonable argument, as there is no guarantee at that point that Kane would do either, and Del Rio doesn't want to waste his time on a match that might not happen. Theodore Long simply decided to officially makes it a fatal four way TLC match, whether Kane shows up or not, which satisfies all parties.
* KickTheDog: He attacks Ricardo Rodriguez for trying to help him but making him lose by accident. JBL remarks that Ricardo deserved the beating.
* KickThemWhileTheyAreDown: As a heel, after he wins, he has a tendency to continue to assault his opponents then put them in his armbar over and over again. It was used against him by Wrestling/CMPunk, after a rather grueling battle against Wrestling/TheBigShow, Punk lays an Anaconda Vice on the beaten down Del Rio until he agrees to a championship match at Survivor Series. Naturally Del Rio labelled him a complete coward afterwards.
* LargeHam:
** He has his own personal ring announcer, need I say more?
** His ring announcer is one to. You could microwave a burrito in the time it takes him to say Del Rio's name.
* LawOfChromaticSuperiority: Not long after his face turn, he traded in his white scarf for a bright red one.
* LightIsNotGood: A SmugSnake aristocrat who is obsessed with money and the upper class. He tends to wear a white scarf to the ring, but has averted this at points by wearing a black scarf. This is also played straight with his white ring gear, but again averted with him sometimes wearing black gear.
* LightningBruiser: He's a 6'5", 240-pounder who has a bevy of aerial moves and can pull off an enziguri as well as a multitude of suplexes. After his Face turn, he's added a moonsault from the second rope (which means less elevation). Yep - a 6'5", 240-pound man doing a moonsault. Lightning Bruiser indeed.
* ManOfWealthAndTaste: He claims to be the exact man of class the Latino community needs to view as a hero, as otherwise they only have a bunch of border crossing criminals and peasants.
* MaskedLuchador
** Used to be one as "Dos Caras Jr.".
** He was also Hustle Kamen Gold.
* MeaningfulEcho: When he showed up in Lucha Underground, his first words were, "My name is Alberto El Patrón... but you already knew that."
* MistakenNationality: He called Glamour Boy Shane a "Yankee" even though Shane is Canadian. Has also called Wrestling/Christian an "Americanato".
* MoralityPet:
** Double subverted. Ricardo Rodriguez, in fact, does not seem to affect whether Alberto Del Rio is a complete Jerkass or not — but at the same time, he's the only individual Del Rio has ever shown any level of concern about (he was visibly upset in the several weeks after Ricardo was PutOnABus due to a kayfabe injury) and can really be considered the closest thing Del Rio has to a friend.
** It finally did when he performed a HeelFaceTurn to protect him from 3MB.
* MrFanservice: Good Lord, yes. 6'5", built like a Greek god, filthy rich, and devastatingly handsome. What's not to love about that? Ironically, every time it was invoked, it didn't go anywhere; with the Wrestling/BellaTwins (they of TwinThreesomeFantasy) due to their release, and with Wrestling/RosaMendes it was dropped after he turned face.
* MythologyGag:
** Matt Striker said that Alberto has two faces: the smiling, virtue-spewing gentleman and that vicious arrogant wrestler; his Lucha name, Dos Caras, translates as Two Faces.
** The name given in AAA to his rolling cross armbreaker, Rompe Destinos ("Destiny Breaker") was actually coined by the WWE Spanish announcers a few months before his first release (keep in mind that the Spanish announcers giving their own names to moves is highly unusual).
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Okay, Alberto, it was one thing to be competitive with Johnny Mundo 'cause you were both gunning for Prince Puma's title, that was understandable. But harassing and fucking with Johnny Mundo until he went full-blown heel and you ended up eating a glass window? You should have known better.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: He's a DirtyCoward and a narcissist of the highest order, but dangerously vicious and cunning in a lot of his matches.
* NotSoSimilar: Beyond being rich and racist, JBL and Alberto Del Rio are not alike at all. JBL's entrance used a custom car, Del Rio had a different one every show. His wrestling style was completely different and even his source of wealth was in stark contrast, being a rich aristocrat to JBL's self made man. That JBL was against Mexican immigrants and Del Rio thinks gringos lack soul suggest they would be enemies if JBL was not currently a kiss up heel commentator (or maybe not, at least in WWE kayfabe—Del Rio does not care much for Mexicans, at least not the boarder crossing "peasants" who do not have as much Spanish blood as he claims to have).
* OddFriendship: Alberto, known for a disdain towards gringos, took on the managerial services of Sucio Dutch Mantel, a man who refuses to speak Spanish on the grounds the language is "primitive", in WWC. What their common ground was is anyone's guess. While Albeto antagonized the Gonzales family Dutch told Patriarch Ray Gonzales that he had no grudge against him and advised Ray to lay low until Alberto left the island.
* OhCrap:
** After accidentally hitting Santa with his car.
** Also gives a subtle variation of this when Wrestling/DolphZiggler's music hits.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Del Rio got pushed to the moon in 2011, as the company desperately wanted him to be their next top star. Unfortunately, just like everything else in 2011, he had to go against the second "Summer of Punk", which completely derailed any momentum he had towards becoming WWE's next top heel and an overall established main event talent.
* PopularityPower:
** Naturally, he gets face-like pops if WWE goes south of the border - no matter if he actually is a face or not.
** He also got huge pops from the crowd in Los Angeles-based Lucha Underground. His status as AAA Mega Champion probably helped.
* PowerTrio: Doble Tormenta del Terror with Damián el Terrible and El Texano Jr in CMLL
* PowerStable:
** The League of Nations with Wrestling/Sheamus, Alexander Rusev and King Barrett.
** The Gentlemen's Club in the World Wrestling League with Richard Negrín, "La Amenaza" Bryan, "El Latino Dorado" Joe Bravo, Escobar and "El Dueño del Mundo" Hiram Tua.
* RedBaron: He started off with "The Essence of Excellence" and added "The Mexican Aristocrat" later. Ricardo often announced him as "El Patrón" when they ran together in WWE, but it was never trademarked, enabling him to use it as his ringname in AAA.
* RedemptionPromotion: Goes from losing every WHC title match against Sheamus to defeating Big Show for it.
* RememberWhenYouBlewUpASun: Everytime Del Rio goes for his Super Kick to a kneeling opponent, JBL declares "It's the kick that won him a World title!" even though he has yet to win another match with the kick.
* RichBitch: "He has a ranch, JR!"
* RoyalBlood:
** He's Kayfabe apparently descended from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, yes, the ones in the 15th century.
** He's Dos Caras' son, and Mil Mascaras' nephew. In lucha libre bloodlines, he is Mexican royalty.
* RuleOfThree: Attempt to cash in his Money In The Bank twice and succeeded on the third.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: He lent it to Ricardo, as well lending him his car, when he had a match against Wrestling/TheBigShow (see above for reason), so he could go out to the ring in style.
* ShipTease: With the Wrestling/BellaTwins (an angle cut short due to his injury and the twins' subsequent release) and with SpicyLatina Wrestling/RosaMendes, which was dropped once he turned face.
* ShoutOut:
** Attempted to pull the late Wrestling/EddieGuerrero's old fake-a-chair-shot trick...but the clever Wrestling/CMPunk threw the chair back at him.
** Actually had a similar technique work for him in a match against Sheamus. He tried to hit Sheamus with a chair while the ref's back was turned, but when Sheamus yanked it out of his hands, Del Rio hit the deck just in time for the ref to turn around and catch Sheamus with the chair. Sheamus got DQ'd (and, as a result, Del Rio received a title shot).
** Stealing the tires off Wrestling/TheBigShow's bus? Dumping "paint" on him? Classic tricks right out of Wrestling/EddieGuerrero's playbook, done against Wrestling/JohnBradshawLayfield, ironically enough for Expy Del Rio, and Show during Eddie's heyday as a Face. This may be the reason that Wrestling/JohnBradshawLayfield - now an announcer - has a special dislike for Alberto's tactics.
* SmallNameBigEgo: When he debuted as a heel, he was a self-righteous braggart. This was dropped when he turned face, but came back once he turned heel again.
* TheSmartGuy: Alberto would use any advantage he could find to win, and liked to methodically attack his opponent to weaken them until he had the upper hand.
* SmugSnake: He practically lives off smug arrogance as a heel.
* SpicyLatina: A male, Trope example, but still there to an extent, most evident when things really don't go how he wants them.
* SpitefulSpit: Had Ray González in a cross arm breaker but willingly released the hold so when he saw González had come ring side so he could spit on Jr.
* SpotlightStealingSquad: e began making regular appearances on Raw while still being a top star on [=SmackDown=] during the time the two brands were kept separate. This wound up being a subversion (and perhaps a case of Foreshadowing), as now the "Brand Extension" has ended and most major players in the WWE are liable to show up on any show - even the BShow, Wrestling/WWEMainEvent.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: The Bella Twins and Rosa Mendes thought so. AJ Lee was not too impressed.
* TallDarkAndSnarky: He's taller than a lot of guys on the roster, has comparatively tan skin, moreno hair and as for "snarky", just see his catch phrase further up the page.
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill[=/=]UnnecessaryRoughness:
** Has a nasty habit of keeping his Cross Armbreaker locked in several seconds after his victim taps out.
** Oh, god, the 2012 Payback PPV. Kicking a concussed Wrestling/DolphZiggler in the head over and over... and over.
* ThirdWheel: Non-romantic variation, during a promo between John Cena and CM Punk, who were arguing over who got to invoke their rematch clause on Del Rio first. Something that Cena promptly lampshaded when Del Rio interjected during said bickering. It also has some RealitySubtext, as the fans really didn't care about Del Rio and just wanted Cena and Punk to keep feuding with each other.
* TheTrickster: Face or heel, if there's a somewhat "outside the box" method of winning a match, you can bet he'll go for it.
* TheWorfBarrage: "The kick that cost Dolph Ziggler the world title!" has not won him many matches since then.
* TournamentArc
** Beat Héctor Garza in La Copa Junior Final in 2006
** Won two CMLL 2007 Torneo de Parejas. One with Rayman and another with Wrestling/LaParka.
* TriumphantReprise: His theme was sped up after he saved the Spanish announcers from 3MB. Since leaving WWE, several companies have remixed his theme too.
* Troll:
** Ironically, this aspect of his character only started to come out after his HeelFaceTurn. One prime example was in a tag match the week after he won the World Heavyweight Championship - mid-match, he threw a bucket of water into Wrestling/TheBigShow's face and essentially made him RageQuit the entire match and just walk off.
** Then, a few weeks later, he helped Show's mistreated assistant put his tour bus up on blocks... then doused the giant in orange paint when he came out to investigate.
** During his entire run in Lucha Underground. He was especially snarky to Dario Cueto himself when negotiating his debut.
* UnderwearOfPower: Dos Caras Jr. has wrestled in pants before but Alberto Del Rio has almost exclusively wrestled in short "underwear" tights.
* UnlimitedWardrobe: He comes out in a new car every show. This was dropped once he turned face.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: He and the Gentlemen's Club accidentally sparked a war between wrestling promoters in Puerto Rico when El Patrón decided to show up at the World Wrestling League's Guerra de Reyes in January 2015 after declining WWC's Aniversario tour in December 2014. See, WWC was a member of the WWL, so obviously showing up for one should have the same effect as appearing for the other, right? Well, WWC responded by signing Mr. 450, depriving the Club of one of their primary feuds, and it simply escalated from there.
* VeryPunchableMan: Del Rio himself often qualifies, but Ricardo Rodriguez in particular gets it pretty bad. Every time he attempts to interrupt a match in Del Rio's favor usually leads to a very nasty beatdown from his opponent. Even more passive Faces such as Wrestling/ReyMysterioJr have been driven to a merciless rage over his interfering. This did not disappear even now that Del Rio was a Face. In fact, it seems to have been cranked up to eleven, now that Big Show has singled out Ricardo as a target.
* ViewersAreGeniuses: Matt Striker said that Alberto has two faces: the smiling, virtue-spewing gentleman and that vicious arrogant wrestler; his Lucha name, Dos Caras (Jr.), translates as Two Faces.
* VillainsNeverLie: Before his [=SmackDown=] debut there were promos of him on the titantron talking up his various values, including his honesty.
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: He likes to think of himself as a hero to the Latino people anyway, but his actions, they are hardly heroic.
* VillainousBreakdown: After losing his title to Wrestling/JohnCena at Night of Champions, he went berserk in the locker room afterwards.
* VillainousCrush: He seems to be a heel with a "unique" obsession for his targets, specifically Rey Mysterio:
** He is famously quoted saying, "I don't want to fight my little friend Rey Mysterio. Instead I'm going to give him a kiss... right on the cheek."
** After [=SummerSlam=], Del Rio says he is happy he gets to defend first against Mysterio because we all love Mysterio. Del Rio says he loves Mysterio. Del Rio says he loves Rey again but adds that he loves beating Mysterio. Del Rio says he began his WWE career beating Mysterio. When he wakes up in the morning, he feels like beating Rey Mysterio.
** He gave Mysterio "respectful" mention in WWC while mentioning that Mexico had produced stars like him and Eddie Guerrero, while Puerto Rico had given the world nothing but Music/RickyMartin.
* VillainExitStageRight: El Patrón Alberto arranged a beat down of Ray González wit Hijo del Dos Caras in case it looked like El Patrón may lose their match, but Ray González Jr. evened the playing field by throwing salt in El Patrón's eyes. Hijo del Dos Caras returned to beat up González Sr. again after El Patrón lost the match but Jr. came out again to run him off, leading Alberto to grab Hijo del Dos Caras and escape through a curtain. González's match with El Patrón the next year was in a cage, to prevent any help, or fleeing.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Seemed to play this trope pretty straight with Ricardo in retrospect. He was occasionally (much more before his apparent Face turn) a real jerk to Ricardo. However, he had said in the past that Ricardo was the only one worthy of introducing him, and if anyone else dared injure or insult Ricardo, there would be hell to pay.
* WhamEpisode: His return at Hell in a Cell 2015 was a shocker for many reasons. 1. There was not even a hint on the Internet that he was in any way negotiating with the company at the time, let alone already signed. 2. He was still the AAA Mega Champion. 3. Zeb Colter was the one who introduced him. He then proceeds to beat Cena clean for the US Title.
** Although it was already known he'd signed with the promotion, his debut on WCPW was a pretty big one...especially after he beat Big Damo with Damo's job on the line.
* WickedCultured: He's a finely dressed sophisticate who enjoys wine and a good fiesta. Throws one heckuva retirement party, too! Although Wrestling/Wrestler wasn't too impressed.
* WinkDing: In video packages on Lucha Underground, his signature wink was accompanied by a ding sound.
* WrestlingFamily: Is the son of Dos Caras, and nephew of Mil Mascaras. His brother was hired by Wrestling/WWE and works in their developmental promotion under the name Memo Montenegro but was let go, then picked up by the WWL where he wrestles as El Hijo Dos Caras.
* WrestlingPsychology:
** Look at his face whenever he's in a match or segment; the story he tells with his eyes alone is superb.
** Additionally, he sets up his submission finisher throughout the match, using several signature moves that target the arms of his opponent.
** He and Ricardo have been selling their respective injuries for coming up on a month.
** His FaceHeelTurn at Payback 2013. The almost smug look on his face when on the attack against a recently-concussed Wrestling/DolphZiggler; he knew every time Dolph got slammed or kicked in the head would further diminish Dolph to the point where he couldn't defend himself or kick out. Not to mention his and Ricardo's incensed reactions whenever Ziggler would kick out the doctors would check on Ziggler, or the clearly insincere happiness they displayed following the victory when Del Rio said he'd "won it for the fans." Fans were not big on Del Rio going into the match, but you can be sure he had them downright loathing him by the end of the match.
* YourPrincessIsInAnotherCastle:
** Won his first WWE title by cashing in Money In The Bank on Wrestling/CMPunk, after he defeated Wrestling/JohnCena to become the true WWE champion.Punk had won the title on the night his contract expired, leaving the company with the WWE title. Needing to crown a new champion, a tournament was held to do so, and eventually Cena won the title back in his rematch, only for Punk to choose that moment to return to the company with the original title.
** Lost his World Heavyweight Championship the same way at the hands of Wrestling/DolphZiggler.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: Ricardo ended up finding this out the HARD way after inadvertently costing Del Rio a non-title match against Wrestling/RobVanDam, courtesy of two thrust kicks, the second one with his head sandwiched inside the steel steps.
