{{Sony}}'s first animated film. Boog, a tame, 900-pound grizzly bear kept by Ranger Beth as part of the educational program, becomes too much for her to handle. Through a series of unfortunate events, Boog is released in the wild with no survival skills. Luckily he is accompanied by the deer who got him into the mess--a clumsy buck named Elliot. The two are pursued through the woodlands by a psychotic hunter, Shaw, who wants revenge on Boog and Elliot for wrecking his truck. While Boog just wants to get home, Elliot just wants to get Beth.

Notable for being the only feature film co-written by Mike Feiss, who created ''WesternAnimation/CowAndChicken''. Received two DirectToVideo [[{{Sequel}} sequels]] that managed to make this light and soft movie even LighterAndSofter.

Now has a [[Characters/OpenSeason character sheet]].
----
!!The films and its sequels contain examples of:
* {{Adorkable}}: Alistair the llama from the 3rd movie. So very much.
* TheAtoner: Fifi becomes this in the threequel after trying to fry Boog, Elliot, and their friends with shock collars in the first sequel, and acts like a Zen dog throughout the film. However, it could also count as a {{Heel Face Brainwashing}}, since it came as a result of being fixed. And being shocked by those collars may have helped too.
* AllCGICartoon
* AlternativeForeignThemeSong: The theme song of the Japanese version is called [[http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/jv3w2zDREzU/ "Tookage"]] by Chemistry.
** The theme of the Latin American version is [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGKU3I33IN8 Tu Eres El Amor]] by [[http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reyli Reyli]] (who also did the voice of Boog in that version).
* AreYouPonderingWhatImPondering: In ''Open Season 2'':
-->'''Giselle:''' This is not at all what I was thinking.
* [[BrosBeforeHoes Bros Before Does]]
* BabiesEverAfter: Elliot and Giselle marry at the end of the first sequel and by the second sequel, they now have three children: Gisela, Giselita, and Elvis.
* BalloonBelly: This happens to Elliot after accidentally inhaling a helium balloon.
* BrotherChuck: Some of the other dogs from the second film don't appear in the third one.
* ButtMonkey: The rabbits are used by the other animals as projectiles, towels, gas masks, etc.
** Boog also counts as one in the first movie.
** As well as the poodle Fifi, the main antagonist in the sequel.
* CampStraight: Alistair the llama from the 3rd movie. Dear god, Alistair.
* CatsAreSuperior: Averted with Roger.
* CompletelyDifferentTitle: The Spanish-language dub is called ''Amigos Salvajes'' (Wild Friends).
* ContinuityNod: Boog mentions the climax of the first movie in ''Open Season 2''. He also mentions Beth.
** In ''3'', Elliot recalls when he was tied in front of the truck in the first film.
* DarkReprise / IronicEcho: "If you go out in the woods today, you're sure of a big surprise."
* DeerInTheHeadlights: We see a literal example in Shaw's flashback to when Eliot "ran in front of" his pickup truck.
* DidYouDie: While Fifi was telling his story:
-->'''Stanley:''' What happened? Did you live?
* DirectToVideo: The sequels.
* TheDitz: Roger the cat.
* DisneyDeath: [[spoiler:Elliot]]
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Boog and Elliot's party in the convenience store looks a lot like a drunken bender, complete with Boog coming home "drunk" on sugar, getting into a fight with his teddy bear, and vomiting on the window of the garage.
** Happens again in ''Open Season 3''.
* EgomaniacHunter: Shaw.
* EverythingsNuttierWithSquirrels
* FantasticRacism: Fifi had a deep hatred of wild animals in ''Open Season 2''.
* {{Fartillery}}: The skunks
* FlyAtTheCameraEnding: Ends with a rabbit thrown at the camera.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Roger the cat.
* FurryConfusion: During the battle against the hunters, Elliot rides Ian like a steed. They both find it more than a little awkward. [=McSquizzy=] the squirrel was also riding Mr. Weenie like a horse.
* FunnyAnimal: Elliot doesn't wear any clothes like most funny animals, but unlike his herd, he's always seen walking on his hind feet and demonstrates amazing dexterity with his front hooves like they were hands. In the third sequel, Elliot and Giselle's kids Gisela, Giselita, and Elvis also walk on their hind feet like their father.
* GoodAngelBadAngel: Boog has these in the third movie. Elliot has others as well.
* GoryDiscretionShot: Played with in the beginning when Elliot and Boog have a fight behind a curtain. Boog splatters paint against the curtain, pull streamers from a box, and shouts/roars at Elliot. Naturally, the audience sees the shadows and assumes the worst.
* GratuitousJapanese: The fish.
** Ironicly enough, what the fish shout when they attack Boog translates to "Now we know Japanese!"
* HeliumSpeech
* HeelFaceTurn: The dogs, after Fifi's SanitySlippage. Though they never really hated wild animals in the first place until Fifi put it in their heads.
* HoYay:[[invoked]] Boog and Elliot. Lampshaded by Ian and [=McSquizzy=] and the Furry Tail Clan.
** There's also some between Ian and Elliot later on.
-->'''Ian:''' (With Elliot sitting on his back) "This is awkward, isn't it?"
-->'''Elliot:''' "Yes. Yes, it is."
** Roberto and Fifi get this too.
* ICallHerVera: Shaw named his gun "[[CompanionCube Lorraine]]".
* IChooseToStay: Boog deciding to stay in the woods.
* InkSuitActor: Martin Lawrence as Boog and Debra Messing as Ranger Beth. To a lesser extent, Ashton Kutcher as Elliot, Billy Connolly as [=McSquizz=]y, and Gordon Tootoosis as Sheriff Gordy.
* IronicEchoCut: Doug [[TemptingFate tempts fate]] when the animals ganged up on him.
* IronicNurseryTune: Shaw's DarkReprise of "Teddy Bear Picnic." See above.
* JerkJock: It's clear that Ian, Manliest of Mule Deer Stags, is supposed to be one of these. At the right angles, the fur on his head is even a mullet. While he clearly is a pretty tough guy and does deserve to be leading the herd, he is a ''serious'' jerk.
* LargeHam: Gary Sinise as Shaw at his best.
* LastEpisodeNewCharacter: In ''Open Season 3''.
* LivingDoorstop: The rabbits and their many uses.
* MementoMacguffin: Dinkleman.
* MissedHimByThatMuch: The gang trying to find Boog in the circus. Fifi and Roger flew over him.
-->'''[=McSquizzy=]:''' You'd think we can't miss a 1200-pound fat bear.
* NoodleIncident: It's never made clear why Elliot was originally thrown out of the herd - although from his actions and personality it's not hard to believe there was a good reason.
* PlayingAgainstType: This is the first (and probably last) time that Gary Sinise passes from a dramatic role like [[{{CSINY}} Det. Mac Taylor]] into a LaughablyEvil hunter like Shaw.
* PromotionToParent: Gisela and Giselita, while their mother is away. Giselle even tells them to watch over their dad.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Buddy the porcupine, also the EnsembleDarkhorse.
* ScreamsLikeALittleGirl: In the first movie, Ian is galloping gracefully with his herd across the river when the floodwater comes down. He turns to look at it mid-leap and screams like a girl just as it hits.
* ShellShockedVeteran: The ducks have shades of this.
* ShoutOut: A few ''Film/{{Braveheart}}'' references, courtesy of Creator/BillyConnolly and the squirrels.
** Boog watches ''Series/WheelOfFortune'' (also owned by Sony).
** While Elliot falls down a tree with a rabbit in his hand in the first sequel, he yells "[[VideoGame/MortalKombat MORTAL KOMBAT!]]"
* SilentBob: Fittingly, Bob, one of Mr. Weenie's owners.
* SmallAnnoyingCreature: Elliot
* SmellySkunk: Stand your ground… unless it's a skunk *fwoosh*
* SpicyLatina: Rosie and Maria have urban Hispanic American accents.
* SuddenMusicalEnding: The sequel ends like this.
* ThoseTwoGirls: The skunks.
* ThunderingHerd: The deer like to pull this off, and they do it very well.
* TwitchyEye: Fifi appears to be twitching when a circus bear resembling Boog is shown on TV.
* ViolentGlaswegian: Again, the squirrels.
