"Rage Comics" a.k.a. "rage face comics" are not a single webcomic ''per se'' but a massive agglomeration of unrelated webcomics by different authors across the interwebs, united only by their distinct style and topics. Essentially a CutAndPasteComic format with a shared pool of recurring face sprites, most rage comics tell [[SliceOfLifeWebcomics short anecdotal stories with a punchline from their authors' lives]].

Originating as a collection of anonymous webcomics posted on FourChan back in 2008, the format quickly spread across the web, thanks to its accessibility (pretty much anyone with Photoshop and online access can produce a rage comic within minutes) and the catchiness of many "rage faces". The original rage face was the [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/rage-guy-fffffuuuuuuuu "Rage Guy"]], to whom the format [[TropeNamer owes its title]]. More "rage faces" have been introduced, and nowadays, hundreds of rage comics are produced and uploaded online every day, alongside LOLCats and other {{meme}}s.

The most common rage comic template consists of four panels (not unlike {{Yonkoma}}) arranged in a 2x2 for better browser readability:

# The main character is introduced doing something ordinary.
# Something unusual happens.
# The character does something about it (alternatively: a BeatPanel).
# The character reacts, often with uncontrolled rage if the previous panel ended in failure.

Longer comics are also common, but they are almost never broader than two panels in a row (since most websites that host rage comics have a picture width restriction).

!!Tropes common to all rage comics:
%%
%% Since this is an overview article, please avoid adding tropes found in individual comics.
%% This list should focus either on tropes associated with rage FACES or on tropes common to the format itself.
%%

* AliceAndBob: Most characters in the rage comics go by the names Derp, Herp (both male), Derpette, Derpina (female), and derivatives.
* AbusiveParents: The [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/trolldad trolldad]] occasionally hits this point.
* AnonymousAuthor: Many such, considering their origins on image boards.
* ArtifactTitle: Early strips universally ended with the Rage Guy raging. Nowadays, that is no longer the case but the title stuck.
* AtomicFBomb: The Rage Guy's signature "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU".
* BigYes: The [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/aww-yea-guy "AWW YEA" guy]].
* CaptainObvious: The [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/you-dont-say "You Don't Say?" guy]] is used as a response to obvious statements, itself taken from a contour drawing of NicolasCage in the film ''Film/VampiresKiss''.
* ComicBookFantasyCasting: Several of the supporting faces (such as "You don't say", "True story", and "Watch out, we've got a badass") are trace-overs of real people.
* CurseCutShort: The Rage Guy's "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU".
* CutAndPasteComic: All faces, especially the multi-purpose [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/cereal-guy Cereal Guy]].
* DastardlyWhiplash: Sported by the [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/i-lied "I Lied!" guy]].
* ADateWithRosiePalms: The [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/fap-guy Fap Guy]].

* FaceFramedInShadow: The [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/oh-god-why "Oh God, Why?" guy]].
* {{Filler}}: More often than not, "True story" is used to fill up a fourth panel in a comic that would otherwise only be three panels long.
* FishEyes: the Derp face.
* GlassesPull: The astonished variation is done by the [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/mother-of-god Mother of God guy]].
* {{Gonk}}: A lot of the rage faces are intentionally ugly.
* GuiltyPleasures: Whatever the [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/me-gusta Me Gusta guy]] reacts to.
* HighClassGlass: The [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/feel-like-a-sir Sir]].
* ILied: Pretty much the point of the [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/i-lied "I Lied!" face]], though more often PlayedForLaughs than [[PlayedForDrama for drama]].
* IdiotBall: Expect anyone with the [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/harp-darp-herp-derp Herp Derp face]] to carry it proudly.
* ImagineSpot: A lot of Me Gusta moments result from the characters realizing that their current (mundane) activity is similar to [[RuleOfCool something awesome, like an action movie scene,]] and immediately imagining themselves in that spot.
* InsaneTrollLogic: Occasionally done by the Trollface, followed by the mocking "Problem?".
* IsThatTheBestYouCanDo: The [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/yao-ming-face-bitch-please "Bitch Please" guy]] is used before one-upping an earlier statement. Said image is taken from an image of former NBA star Yao Ming laughing heartily [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-26VMhVLuHc during a 2009 postgame interview]].
* JetPack: Equipped on the [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/nothing-to-do-here-jet-pack-guy Nothing To Do Here guy]].
* KickTheDog: Many times one with the troll face will do this.
* LittleNo: The [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/no-rage-face "NO." guy]], though with more gravity than the normal.
* LongHairIsFeminine: Most "female" faces are produced simply by strapping a wig of common hair color on a male-per-default preexisting sprite.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: The [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/oh-god-why "Oh God, Why?" guy]].
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: The "seriously?" faces are far more realistically drawn than the standard faces that aren't trace-overs, and they are some of the few to have uniquely designed female sprites.
* NotBad: The [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/obama-rage-face-not-bad "Not Bad." face]], patterned after BarackObama's reaction [[http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/picturegalleries/picturesoftheday/8537857/Pictures-of-the-day-26-May-2011.html?image=8 during a royal visit to London]].
* OhCrap: The aptly named [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/oh-crap-omg-rage-face Oh Crap guy]].
* RageBreakingPoint: The [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/rage-guy-fffuuuu Rage Guy]] in a nutshell.
* RageQuit: The [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/desk-flip Desk-Flipping Guy]].
* SliceOfLifeWebcomics: Most commonly.
* SuicidalOverconfidence: The [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/challenge-accepted "Challenge Accepted"]] (inspired by Barney Stinson's CatchPhrase from ''Series/HowIMetYourMother'') and [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/fck-yea "F**k Yea"]] faces, but subverted with the [[http://knowyourmeme.com/photos/266158-challenge-accepted "Challenge Considered"]] face. Sometimes this trope is followed by the [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/neil-degrasse-tyson-reaction "Watch Out Guys, We've Got a Badass over Here" guy]], itself patterned after astrophysicist Neil [=deGrasse=] Tyson.
* {{Touche}}: A sad, remorseful version with the [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/okay-guy "Okay..." guy]].
* {{Troll}}: The iconic [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/trollface-coolface-problem Trollface]].
* TwitchyEye: [[http://ragemaker.net/images/Angry/eye%20twitch.png The Angry Guy]]
* WineIsClassy: [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/feel-like-a-sir Drinking Like a Sir]].
