[[caption-width-right:298:minus is weird like that.]]

A webcomic by Ryan Armand that ran for 130 episodes from February 2006 to July 2008. It is archived [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus.html here]], with extra strips for afterward [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minuse1.html here]], and [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/mnus1.html here]]. There is also [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/store.html#minus a print version]] with some extra strips. A larger version of the comic is [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minusb1.html here]].

minus is an elementary school girl. She is sometimes [[AmbiguousGender mistaken for a boy]]. [[RealityWarper She has a very powerful imagination and can do anything she wants]]. The things she does are [[NightmareFuelStationAttendant fickle and whimsical]], as well as [[{{Jerkass}} mischievous and vindictive]]. She is, after all, [[ChildrenAreCruel a child]].

[[AllOfTheOtherReindeer She has very few friends]], apart from a green-haired girl, the beings that minus wills into existence, and the ghosts.

%comment% The word below is intentionally "grownups". Don't change it!
%comment% The joke is that minus is a comic that adults will find a bit disturbing but children will not.
%comment% Hence, this recognizable stock warning has been inverted!
It should be noted that this webcomic is not recommended for grownups, who may find it disturbing.

Compare and contrast with "ItsAGoodLife".

[- Also, yes, both the character and the strip are [[AllLowercaseLetters spelled with a lower case "m"]].-]

!!''minus'' contains examples of:

* OneHundredAndEight: minus [[spoiler:dies]] in the 108th strip.
* AccidentalMurder: [[spoiler:By the green haired girl, of all people. And it stuck.]] minus does this on occasion.
* AlternateHistory: Even without minus around making the laws of reality her [[LastSecondWordSwap servant]], there are subtle hints that her world is not the same as our own. Of course, [[EpilepticTrees she may well be responsible for that...]]
* AlternateUniverse: minus has made several. And then there are the extra strips, which appear to be all over the place.
* AmbiguousInnocence
* AncientAstronauts: DoublySubverted: After hearing about the hypothesis, minus goes back in time to try to meet the aliens. She doesn't find any... but at the end of the strip it is revealed that yes, aliens were responsible for the human race. She just didn't go far enough back in time.
* AnnoyingArrows: [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus23.html #23]]. That has got to hurt...
* ApocalypseHow: Quite a few, but most famously [[spoiler: the one that actually stuck, wherein minus resurrected the entire population of Earth, past and present, human and otherwise. It was crowded, to put it mildly.]]
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: minus tends to get easily distracted and then seems to... forget about her creations, or absent-mindedly [[FridgeHorror wipes them out of existence]].
* AWizardDidIt: Since minus's powers are, literally, ''whatever she wants'', "minus did it" is a perfectly valid solution to any FridgeLogic.
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler: ''Everyone''. This brings about the beginning of the end.]]
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: Rule of thumb: never ask minus anything when she's distracted, and always remember to be precise, and think of the side-effects before you do.
** [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus91.html This comic]] demonstrates another rule: [[AttentionDeficitOohShiny Make it short and easy to pay attention to.]]
* BlackKnight: [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus74.html #74]]
-->"[[YouFool Fool]] ! Do you think you can withstand the power of the Black Knight ?"
* BodyHorror: minus turns a balloon selling guy into a balloon himself when he yells at her for popping all his balloons. [[spoiler:Then he pops.]]
* BittersweetEnding: [[spoiler: The entire human race is destroyed, but lives on in the after life. Also, minus and the green haired girl look distinctly melancholy in the final strip.]]
** [[spoiler: Subverted when you remember that minus still has her godly powers and, ergo, can change the world back to how it was and do anything else to no longer be sad or melancholy.]]
*** [[FridgeHorror Hooray, the cosmos is still in the thrall of a mad, amoral god for eternity!]]
**** Perhaps she'll temper a bit over time.
* BreadEggsBreadedEggs: [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus79.html #79]], where a carnival has great food, great rides, and even great food...... that you can ride!
* BullyingADragon / MuggingTheMonster: A few kids in the early comics.
* CallBack: [[ShowWithinAShow Sergeant Davy]] and his trusty steed, Prendon, are mentioned as having existed in the comic's world several strips after minus altered history to make Davy a war hero.
* CarnivoreConfusion : This [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus5.html strip]]
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Despite, as can be told by most of the rest of this page, having a reputation for being dangerous, in truth, all things considered, minus' stops doing more negative things very quickly - by halfway through the comic she's almost entirely neutral: only doing negative things out of naivete rather than intentionally doing them, and she often adds things to her some of the less positive things she caused to make them bittersweet or even good. She never stops callously making synthetic sentient beings, however.
* CheerfulChild: minus, of course.
* ChekhovsGunman: The aliens. They first appear as the inhabitants of a random planet that minus visits on a lark. At the very end of the comic, it turns out that [[spoiler:those same aliens were responsible for the evolution of humans]].
* ChildrenAreInnocent: Innocent, yes. She sets the bar for AmbiguousInnocence.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}
* ContinuityCreep: Strip [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus50.html #50]]. Apparently minus's actions have consequences after all...
* CrystalSpiresAndTogas: The alien world.
* DeusExMachina: an in-universe version in minus herself, who tends to solve any problems or requests with a somewhat [[CloudCuckooLander tangential application]] of her powers. Anyone who doesn't know about minus is usually some form of terrified or curious at the seemingly illogical and irrational things that occur around her (that tend to really be... well... [[SelfDemonstratingArticle illogical]]).
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus106.html This guy]]. And he's a KarmaHoudini who's the only one shown to do something to minus and not suffer any consequences.
** Granted, his actions [[spoiler: cause a chain of events which directly lead to TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt]], so one could say that his retribution was delayed, but there.
** The green-haired girl also pulls this off, accidentally.
* DidWeJustHaveTeaWithCthulhu: What adult humans who have been involved with one of minus's reality-warping events realise. For the children she plays with, it's more PalsWithJesus.
* DisproportionateRetribution
* EgomaniacHunter: [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus39.html Ends up boxing the lion he shot]].
* EndOfTheWorldSpecial
** [[spoiler: CosyCatastrophe]]
* EverythingsBetterWithDinosaurs: [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus46.html #46]].
* EverythingsBetterWithPrincesses: [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus73.html #73]]
* ExcitedShowTitle: Temporarily, when [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus107.html minus becomes...wackier?]] The [[TheRant rant]] for that comic is just a single exclamation point.
* ExtraordinarilyEmpoweredGirl
* FieryRedHead: [[JerkAss The red-haired ghost.]]
* GettingSmiliesPaintedOnYourSoul: [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus40.html To her credit, she isn't the originator of this]].
* GreatGazoo
* GreenThumb
* GodSaveUsFromTheQueen: [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus73.html #73]]
* GodIsFlawed: minus
* HairColors: minus' changes from strip to strip.
* HumanoidAbomination
* IdiotHair
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Subverted in [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus13.html #13]].
* ImaginaryFriend: Only in minus' case, they really aren't that imaginary for long.
* InexplicablyAwesome: It's never explained where exactly minus' powers come from.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: One of the girls in minus's class is friends with Larry, an adult man.
* ISeeDeadPeople: minus can see and talk to ghosts. In one strip, she's talking to the ghost of a dead girl and her friend asks if she can see.
* JackassGenie: [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus60.html The end of this strip and most of the next]], although like everything else minus does it's JustForFun.
* JerkAss: minus can be this a lot.
** Also the red haired ghost girl. At least minus' is out of childish naivete and immaturity.
* JerkJock: These show up occasionally.
* KaleidoscopeHair: minus's hair changes from strip to strip. {{Justified|Trope}}, since she ''is'' omnipotent.
** When minus brings the red-haired ghost back to life, her hair inexplicably changes from red to [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair green]], presumably to distinguish her from her (living) identical twin who was just introduced.
* KarmaHoudini: minus.
* KidsAreCruel: minus doesn't generally doesn't recognize the consequences of their actions until they're presented to her, if they ever are at all. This leads to a lot of DisproportionateRetribution such as turning a man into a balloon and letting him pop, or moments like the creation of a miniature civilization in her tub only to destroy it when bathtime ends.
* KrakenAndLeviathan: [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus50.html Alien invasion? Zombie apocalypse? Famine?]] Summon a kraken!
* LaserGuidedKarma: quite often happens when people get on the wrong side of minus. Sometimes subverted given her general lack of moral responsibility and the resultant FridgeHorror, like the balloon-seller's fate.
* LittleMissAlmighty
* LivingToys: variations on a theme for minus.
* LoveAtFirstSight: minus plays cupid in [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus23.html #23]].
* MagicRealism: To an extent.
* MagicalCamera: It captures souls.
* MikeNelsonDestroyerOfWorlds
* MoodWhiplash
* MoralityPet: the green-haired girl with the pigtails. Better things and happy endings happen to minus's newly-sentient lifeforms when she's around.
* NamesTheSame: That the eponymous character shares her name with the term for someone whose powers make them antisocial in ''Manga/MedakaBox'' has not gone unnoticed by some readers.
* NoNameGiven: Everyone except minus, Larry, and a couple ghost characters.
* NothingIsTheSameAnymore: Starting in strip #119, courtesy of [[spoiler: TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt]].
* OnlySixFaces: If it weren't for hairstyle, the characters would be indistinguishable.
* OurGhostsAreDifferent
* PerfectHealth: minus had never gotten sick before, so she wills herself to. She finds it highly overrated.
* PerspectiveMagic [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus95.html #95]]. Also [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus14.html #14]].
* PetTheDog: minus [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus61.html has her moments.]]
* PhysicalGod: minus doesn't just seem to be a god -- she kind of seems to be ''the'' god. She runs the afterlife, at any rate.
* {{Pirates}}
* PortalPicture
* RealityWarper: minus.
* RealityWarpingIsNotAToy: Well, for minus it is.
* RecurringCharacter: Larry.
* ReedRichardsIsUseless: [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus91.html #91]].
* LaResistance: [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus74.html #75]]
* {{Retraux}}: minus. is deliberately drawn in the style of a turn-of-the-century newspaper comic, only without the limitations on space or color.
* ReusedCharacterDesign: Most of the unnamed characters look like the characters from another one of the artist's series, ''Great''.
* RewritingReality: [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus21.html here]] and anywhere else in the comic. Continuously.
* SceneryPorn
* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: In-Universe: [[spoiler: AfterTheEnd, the ghost population finds the fact they had legs kinda funny, despite the fact most of them had legs before.]]
** [[spoiler:It's implied that these are future generations of dead people (so I guess ghosts can have kids and grow up). They never had legs.]]
* ShoutOut: Various references to anime [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus13.html here]]. In order of lines, the immortal who wants to be human is from ''SoulHunter'', the second one sounds vaguely like a quote about immortality from ''GalaxyExpress999'', the one about the witch giving up her powers is ''Anime/OjamajoDoremi'', and the quote about everything coming easy sounds similar to a lament made in ''MagicUsersClub'' by Takeo's gay friend.
** The dishman who was out dojo-hunting obviously battled a practitioner of [[BattleAngelAlita Panzerkunst]].
* TheSlowPath: [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus25.html #25]] and [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus26.html #26]]. Slight subversion as [[spoiler: she wouldn't make it back at all; minus brings her back in her old age to say good bye.]]
* SilenceIsGolden: While there are a few strips that have talking in it, many strips are pantomime.
* SociopathicHero: minus, in as much as ''all children'' are kind of sociopathic. The strips are full of people whose lives she has ruined or casually tormented over a [[DisproportionateRetribution minor slight]] or just because she was playing around.
* SpiritWorld
* StarfishAliens
* TookALevelInBadass: [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus75.html The ponytail girl.]]
* UnstoppableMailman: The paper cutout man minus creates ''will'' deliver her the candy she asked him to get, [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus105.html no matter what]].
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: If the red-haired ghost hadn't demanded that minus bring her back to life, [[spoiler:the end of the world]] might not have happened.
* ViewerGenderConfusion: Even the [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus36.html in-universe characters]] have trouble pegging minus.
* WalkingTheEarth: Larry. Not even [[spoiler: TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt]] can stop him.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Strip [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus10.html #10]] was the first one actually drawn, and at the time the creator had not yet decided whether minus would actually be all-powerful or just a shape-shifter. If he had chosen differently, the comic would have turned out very different.
* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman
* WhoWantsToLiveForever: [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus123.html This strip]].
** More like making fun of TrueArtIsAngsty.
* WithGreatPowerComesGreatPerks: Indeed, that's ''all'' they're used for.
* WrongGenreSavvy: [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus91.html This couple]] appears to believe that minus is a [[RulesLawyer rules lawyering]] LiteralGenie, quite forgetting that she's really just a naive little girl with a rather short attention span.
* YouAndWhatArmy: ''[[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus98.html This]]'' army.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: And Green hair, and red hair, depending on minus' mood it seems. Some of the normal characters have green or (bright) red hair regardless of minus. Interestingly, no character ever has yellow hair, and the color yellow is rarely used in the comic, so [[HairColorDissonance perhaps the green-haired characters are meant to be blonde]]. minus is the only character who ever has blue or pink hair.
* YouNeverAsked: Referenced [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus120.html here]].
* ZombieApocalypse: [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus109.html Here]] and [[http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus110.html here]]. It's more of a childish prank than a full-blown apocalypse, though.
