[[caption-width-right:350:A typical still from a video, complete with [[ReferenceOverdosed references.]][[note]]The upper annotation is a quote from ''Franchise/MortalKombat'', and the latter obviously refers to ''WesternAnimation/SpaceGhostCoastToCoast''.[[/note]]]]

[[http://www.youtube.com/user/TheAnnotatXperiment The Annotated Series]] is a Website/YouTube series that lampoons TV shows and {{public service announcement}}s, such as ''[[Webcomic/CtrlAltDel Ctrl+Alt+Del: The Animated Series]]'', ''WesternAnimation/TheAdventuresOfSuperMarioBros3'', and ''WesternAnimation/CaptainNTheGameMaster'' via Website/YouTube's annotation feature.

On October 3rd 2009, [=CurtDogg=] uploaded an episode of ''Ctrl+Alt+Del: The Animated Series'' and included a link to the video's annotation editor in the style of the channel [[http://www.youtube.com/user/UnoriginalContent UnoriginalContent]], which had been going for a few months by this time. It caught on and The Annotated Series was born. Under the name [[http://www.youtube.com/user/beeupyou beeupyou]], [=CurtDogg=] continued to upload the rest of the series before moving onto other video game-related cartoons. However, [=YouTube=] eventually discontinued the collaborative annotation feature, forcing the move to the shared channel, [[http://www.youtube.com/user/TheAnnotatXperiment TheAnnotatXperiment]].

The Annotated Series is presented in a regular episodic format, usually in the original order of the series in question, with a break in the middle or end of each season. Each break is marked by an intermission in which group members annotate [[SomethingCompletelyDifferent something completely unrelated]] but generally of similar poor quality as the main attractions.

A third account, [[http://www.youtube.com/user/HammerNationTime HammerNationTime]], is used for material that is considered too risky copyright-wise for the main channel.

In mid-2014 two strikes were leveled against [=TheAnnotatXperiment=], resulting in a channel move. The new main channel is [[https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC86ZGp8enUONd1ZbZkZkRXA/featured TheAnnotationStation]] while [=TheAnnotatXperiment=] will serve (for the time being at least) as an archive for old works.

Has its own ShoutOut page, which can be found [[ShoutOut/TheAnnotatedSeries here]]. Also has a page covering its many {{Running Gag}}s available [[RunningGag/TheAnnotatedSeries here]].

'''Attention:''' Please do not add links to the annotated videos. The annotators have asked to avoid linking from other websites, in case potential copyright claimants were to find them. You wouldn't want to be responsible for shutting down the channel, would you?

!!This group provides examples of:

[[folder: A-H]]
* AbortedArc: ''Sonic Satam'' was dropped partway through the entire series because it was viewed as SoOkayItsAverage so there really wasn't anything good to mock. [[invoked]]
* AccentuateTheNegative: Kind of the point.
* ActorAllusion: Every time Long John Baldry's voice shows up in a DiC cartoon, it goes [[AdventuresOfSonicTheHedgehog pretty much how you'd expect.]]
** In SonicUnderground, a joke is made about Sleet and Dingo retreating to a remote farm in Lincolnshire, which is an [[Creator/MauriceLaMarche Actor]] [[WesternAnimation/PinkyAndTheBrain Allusion]] '''to''' an [[Creator/OrsonWelles Actor]] [[HilariousOuttakes Allusion]].
* ActuallyPrettyFunny: The typical response when something is genuinely funny rather than amusing.
* AddedAlliterativeAppeal: Cheatsy Koopa once says "I'm the Emperor of Eavesdropping!" Every scene he appears in afterwards has at least one annotation with a new alliterative title for him. And every once in a while he seems to be reincarnated into another show briefly.
* AlasPoorVillain: A meta-example: With the knowledge that the penultimate episode of ''WesternAnimation/SonicUnderground'' marks the final appearance of Sleet and Dingo, most of the episode's YouTube comments consist of sorrowful send-offs for the pair.
* AllThereInTheManual: This page, even when [=YouTube=] has an AttentionWhore.
* AlienGeometries: Explored on shows with particularly bad backgrounds, such as [[http://i.imgur.com/g2ESq.png this gem]].
* AnAssKickingChristmas: The Annotated Panda Fighter. Technically.
* AndNowForSomethingCompletelyDifferent:
** At the middle and end of each season they'll do intermissions and warmups, with works like ''Bibleman'' and ''Bouchedags''.
** [[VideoGame/MortalKombat4 MK4 - The Annotated Gold]] had the distinction of being the first to be focused entirely on video game cutscenes rather than cartoons.
** Annotated Sex Is The Best! was in fact a WebOriginal parody, and was voted for by visitors to the channel, much to the Annotators' dismay. It's unknown whether they'll ever leave future material up to public vote.
** Irrelevant's upcoming project/valentine/salute for the channel Annotated Fan Fiction which was partially introduced by 'Annotated Fan Fiction (Practice)'
** Club Mario segments were put in place of the usual Lou Albano segments for episode 31 of the Super Mario Bros Super Show due to Hurpdurpmanguy being unable to find an English version.
* {{Angrish}}: In the early days when anybody could contribute, any moment of particularly horrible quality would result in the screen being filled with derogative remarks. One would usually need to pause the video in order to see them all.
** It still shows up occasionally, typically because of perceived CanonDefilement or something being seen as ''so stupid or nonsensical'' that a rational response is impossible. Often combined with BigWhat and SarcasmFailure.
* AngstWhatAngst: {{Lampshaded}}. A kid known only as Junior is transported to the Mushroom Kingdom by accident and remarks on how he's instantly, effortlessly come to terms with his situation. [[invoked]]
* ApocalypseHow: Kevin's[[note]]Kid Icarus helped but he might have been shooting a net arrow so what was the point of zapping a football.[[/note]] destruction of a Football world, interpreted as a class 5, got a lot of comments. And later he was called out for worrying about Faxandu being destroyed by The Evil One but showing no compassion for Football World.
--> '''Annotators''': Wow only Kevin could manage to turn a game of football into an apocalyptic situation like this./And so the N-Team completely obliterated the grassy world of American Football...World./ Our heroes just killed millions of football players! Even as a nerd I am disgusted!/Kevin, you just quite possibly made the 9/11 of Video Land. And you're going to pop jokes?
* ArcFatigue: Invoked: Sonic Underground and The Super Mario Bros. Super Show caused a lot of annotators to just stop taking part.
** As did Sonic SatAM's first season, to the point where the annotators might not even ''do'' the second.
* ASCIIArt: Extremely common in the early days before [=YouTube=] began to [[ScrewedByTheNetwork keep arbitrarily changing the annotation editor]] and breaking them.
* AuthorAppeal: With so many they certainly show off many, many (many!) different loves. If there's a nod to [[HumongousMecha giant robots]] or GetterRobo it probably came from Irrelevant.
** Near the end of Captain N, [=MrGuyPwnsYou=] began making VideoGame/KidIcarusUprising references whenever he got the chance.
* AuthorTract: They will pop up but they will be polite and have them last a mere second. So if anyone wants to see them they will go back and hit the pause button.
** Armor Of Light invoked a lot of these.
* BadToTheBone: The surf music.
* BatmanGambit: Irrelevant threatened to upload an episode of The Nutshack as a last-resort solution in case nothing else was uploaded for the weekend between the Captain N finale and the start of Sonic Underground/Super Mario Super Show. Cue Hurpdurpmanguy becoming a total bad ass to make sure Dr. D's sequel, and a few other things, got uploaded, dissuading Irrelevant from uploading Nutshack... for now.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: Irrelevant wanted to see the Nutshack get annotated for months. Then it was, and all hell broke loose.
** And then Irrelevant took it further by uploading Beauty and Warrior.
* BehindTheBlack: Many a speech bubble represents a character speaking from off-screen.
* BerserkButton: The slightest allusion, be it accidental or not, to any would-be scrappy character from another series causes at least one person to speak of ways to murder them.
** Each annotator has something that sets them off. Everyone being in on the plan except for Megaman in the Captain N season 1 finale pissed off a lot of people. Irrelevant gets really pissed when two people are supposed to be good friends and it is strictly told and not shown in episode 5 of the Mortal Kombat cartoon. A lot also get pissed off by pre-SocietyMarchesOn stuff and Irrelevant dislikes (potential) transgender digs.
* BetterThanABareBulb: Just about every visible trope or cliché will get lampshaded at some point or another.
* BondOneLiner: Particularly cheesy ones would be repeated. These tend to become a NeverLiveItDown moment. [[invoked]]
-->'''Sonya: '''"Haha! Shocking!"
* BreadEggsBreadedEggs:
** In episode 7 of ''Savage Dragon'', when Frank asks Dragon what else cops think about when their partner is down, an annotation responds "Donuts? The meaning of life? The meaning of donuts?"
** In ''Darkstalkers'' episode 7, one annotation says that the Morrigan/Harry teacher/mentor subplot could be interesting "if this show weren't written by morons. And intended for children." "And written by moronic children," another annotation adds.
* BreakingTheFourthWall: Whenever a character looks towards the camera and pauses, this is invoked. Many of the characters' speech bubbles address the show's content from an unusually GenreSavvy standpoint too. Basically everyone can be {{Deadpool}} if the Annotators will it.
-->"What do you think, viewers at home?"
* BreakingTheReviewersWall:
** ASCII boots stomping on ''[=SMB3=]'' Kootie Pie whenever she has a tantrum on the floor.
** A blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment in ''Captain N'' where Mega Man is hit by a projectile made out of annotations causing him to [[MercyInvincibility blink from the damage]].
* BritishAccents: The singer of the surf music bonus videos in Captain N season 1 meanders between being very stereotypically British and having a thick northern accent.
* BrokenRecord: Volume 3 of The Surf Music Could Have Been A Lot Worse made fun of the infamous CD skip at an ill-fated Milli Vanilli concert. The hidden video at the end does more of the same.
** ''"...song is for- song is for- song is for-"''
* ButtMonkey: Nobody likes Jeffrey Scott.
* CallBack: Lots. Watching any most recent episode by these guys will likely be full of references to past series they've annotated, though they try to keep it accessible to first-time viewers.
** In episode 18 of ''Sonic Underground'', someone annotated Sleet and Dingo [[ScrewThisImOutOfHere effectively quitting]] ([[StatusQuoIsGod which was undone off-screen by next episode]]) using a monologue from [[WesternAnimation/TransformersPrime Starscream]]. Episode 27's 3rd act, in the description, asks who posted that particular monologue, as Sleet and Dingo end up [[TheStarscream sabotaging Robotnik's plans for their own gain]].
* CallForward: Since ''Super Mario Bros. 3'' and ''Super Mario World'' were annotated first, the ''Super Show'' run occasionally references them.
* {{Calvinball}}: Referenced in episode 8 of season 2, where Simon is made to say "All of our games turn into Calvinball" after being attacked and having his pants pulled down by Duke.
* {{Cameo}}: Speech bubbles from characters from previous works show up, usually without a name but instead color-coded, making them almost an InJoke. Character allusions not from works they've annotated have included LetsPlay/{{slowbeef}}, LetsPlay/ElectricalBeast, and LetsPlay/{{BillyMC}}, as well as other WebVideo/{{Retsupurae}} references.
* CanonWelding: Occurs for humor. Examples:
** Sonya and Guile both work for Escher.
** The Mikes from WesternAnimation/CaptainNTheGameMaster and CartoonAllStarsToTheRescue are the same person.
* CausticCritic: If they can think of a better way you could've done something, they won't tell you nicely. Also see the SophisticatedAsHell entry below.
* CensorBox: This appears any time something appears suggestive. In Captain N they frequently appear over Duke the dog's anus, which at least one person apparently finds offensive. And one person was annoyed it was getting covered, this was hopefully sarcasm.
* CerebusSyndrome: If the show they're annotating turns particularly low in quality, dark or just plain offensive, people will stop making jokes and instead offer serious critical analysis on why the scene is bad.
** Subverted with "Tricky People". It went to some dark places, which meant that there were a number of awkward moments where none of the annotators said anything. Some feel that it was one of the darkest things the annotators have faced so far. But then by the end, the sheer Narm of the whole thing essentially gave the annotators a HeroicSecondWind, resulting in the jokes coming back.
* ChildHater: If an episode has a guest child character, or involves the characters being turned into children, they won't much care for it.
** The closest exception was Julio (Hoolio?) from Captain N. He was mocked (like everything else) for selling newspapers he knew that caused zombies. But many were touched that he would let his grades go to hell to secretly make money for his family after his dad, "Reggie", lost his job. And even with the UnfortunateImplications the annotators agreed that Julio's inability to read was genuinely topical.
* ChristmasSpecial: Christmas Comes To Pac-Land.
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome:
** Mocked. In particular, the final episode with Ryu and Ken in it had an Annotator have Ken say that he was "borrowing" Blanka's technique since Blanka's not on the show anymore. Also see the LeftHanging entry below.
** Many of the intermissions; while some of them have established timeless running gags like the Dr. Rabbit cartoons and , others have been forgotten entirely. In some cases this is subverted and a BrickJoke or two will be dropped referencing such latter cases, only for it to fade back into obscurity. And even then, such forgotten intermissions tend to only get referenced during other intermissions if they are to even be mentioned at all.
-->Polaris: ''Quit the daydreamin' Pancada, you know I feel about you-u!''
* ClipShow: In a rather interesting take on the format, Street Fighter ended with a music video showcasing the series' craziest moments. There are similar plans for Zelda and Captain N too.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wHrEVYFr3U Five Years: The Annotated Special]] is this, with the most memorable clips from the series 5-year tenure getting reriffed by new generation.
* CollectiveGroan: Pretty common with one of the biggest being for the Red-Blue episode of Mario Bros, The Nutshack returning, Little Panda Fighter and the first Creator/DingoPictures production.
* ColorCodedForYourConvenience:
** Speech bubbles usually match up with their attributed characters.
** Annotator comments often are as well, to make them somewhat identifiable. In general:
*** Avirosb: Green background with white text.
*** Irrelevant: Started with weird combos then settled on black-white (sticks to the right) with Captain N.
*** [=ReloadXPsiPlays=]: Blue/cyan (lower right).
*** [=MrGuyPwnsYou=]: Started with light blue, now light purple (tends towards the top).
*** [=ZetsubouSensei005=]: Transparent/black (top left).
*** [=HurpDurpManGuy=]: Started with multiple colors, finally settled with dark blue on the lower right.
*** [=Cyberguy64=] Cyan, (top right)
*** [=VonClutch=] Slightly different Dark Blue (top left)
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: During the eponymous song and dance number of Tricky People, a lot of sympathy was shown for the man asking for help finding his lost puppy, and when offered free cash by a potential child molester, all they had to say to it was "Well hey, free cash."
* CompanionCube: Random black specks on the screen in the Super Mario Bros. 3 cartoon came to be known as Doug the Bug.
* CouchGag:
** At first it was changing the words on the mode select screen in the CtrlAltDel opening, after which it was all about changing the title of absolutely everything, as well as the name of the writer, if credited.
** The ''Super Mario Bros. Super Show'' episodes also have the end credits in every episode, with another song often replacing them. Most often, this is a foreign-language version of "Do The Mario" or the Sonic Underground opening.
* CrazyEnoughToWork: The reason the word "experiment" appears in the name reflects this. Nobody was certain that sharing an account and having multiple people log in and annotate simultaneously would actually work.
* CreditsGag:
** Once per series, the end credits of the show will be displayed for everyone to annotate. In CtrlAltDel: The Annotated Series, the credits were left in every time so they could lampoon the episode-specific credits gags. But more recently they do it twice per season, once at the start and once at the season finale.
** The Super Mario Bros Super Annotated Show (staring with episode 3) ends every episode with Captain Lou Albano dancing to various songs from other previously annotated shows, as well as different language versions of the WesternAnimation/SonicUnderground intro. They typically come complete with [[{{Mondegreen}} misheard lyrics]], or completely original ones if the tune has none.
* CrisisCrossover: Of a cosmic religious sense. Pastor Daniel from the Super Kids was able to not only annoy his very own God with his constant rambling but also much of the major Greek Gods demanded he shut up, the Siddhartha Gautama was disgusted, Allah wished for some of those misguided kamikaze extremists to kill him, Odin was ready to pucture his last eye, Ra suffered trauma, Raiden woed making Daniel a guardian of the Earthrealm and Xenu found the ending ridiclous.
* CurbStompBattle: Luigi vs. Koopa's army in the ''Ice Capades'' video. Hell Koopa himself just blows up when he gets surrounded by kids. The first part was actually pretty awesome.
* DarkerAndEdgier: The ''Tricky People'' riff, which was kind of unavoidable given the subject matter.
* DeadpanSnarker
* DelayedReaction: Ethan's Everquest, or was it WoW, character sets Lucas's on fire. The first two times Lucas just stands there in silence as his entire body is consumed by flames. Cue the annotators being amused that the third time it happens Lucas reacts more reasonably instead of keeping it a running gag.
--> Oh? Third time's the charm apparently.
* DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment: Often happens unintentionally; the same joke or bit of FridgeLogic will appear multiple times, since the annotators didn't see each other's annotations while setting up their own. (For example, in the ninth episode of the ''Super Mario Bros. Super Show'', there's a chorus of variants on "what could possibly go wrong?")
* DirectedByCastMember: Annotated Daydream; one of the Annotators appears in the video, though he didn't let on until everyone had given him an amusing nickname. And Irrelevant's stupid fan fiction CrisisCrossOver.
* DisneyVillainDeath: A Defied version in ''WesternAnimation/MortalKombatDefendersOfTheRealm'' has these gems:
--> Is it too much to ask for a Disney Villain Death?
--> Okay good I was about to ask why he forgot he could do that.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: ASCII penises are often added to alter the meaning of characters' motions, and pause annotations isolate anything that accidentally looks suggestive.
* DontExplainTheJoke: Hoo boy, did they get on CtrlAltDel's case for this or what?
** And then they'll do it themselves.
-->Y'see the joke is: Yoshi eats everything.
* DownerEnding: Sort of. There are lots of attempts to shoehorn one in every time it fades to black. [[UnexplainedRecovery Then they get better.]]
* EpicFail: When [[WesternAnimation/SonicUnderground Sleet]] insisted on ''ramming'' trees that trapped them in episode 5, people's comments were none too kind.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Make a racially or culturally insensitive joke in front of these guys. We dare you.
** After wanting to do the Nutshack and Beauty and Warrior, Irrelevant402 had an 'oh crap' moment when Dingo Pictures reared its ugly head.
** Sure they love to make 'come get some candy in my van' cracks but when an actual pedophile is the antagonist in Tricky People there are '''zero''' people going for a DracoInLeatherPants route and even some just slight cheering for the damn Yellow Dino when he takes matters into his own hands. [[invoked]]
** Typically they dislike child characters and scrappies, yet shockingly, many announced how disgusted they were with the death of the Gold Dragon in the second Dragon's Den episode. Yes this is even ''after'' the Gold Dragon's baby form was a palette swap of the dreaded Puff. Basically, the writers killed off a five-minute-old creature with zero thoughts of the implications.
* EvenTheSubtitlerIsStumped:
** Happens at one point during ''Captain N'', with the "translation" of Mother Brain's lines.
** Happens again during the tenth episode of ''The Super Mario Bros. Super Show'', with the {{Mondegreen}} lyrics for the German theme.
* EverybodyLaughsEnding: Happens a lot, especially with captions turning it into King Harkinian's laugh from ''[[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaCDiGames The Faces of Evil]]''.
* ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin: Played straight most of the time by simple adding "The Annotated Series" at the end of a title, with the notable exception of the Mortal Kombat cartoon (Defenders of the Annotated Realm) and many of the intermissions.
* ExpospeakGag: In the CartoonAllStarsToTheRescue episode, there's a very long and roundabout description of Mel Blanc rolling in his grave after a certain line from Bugs.
* TheFace: Thus far [=CurtDogg=], Irrelevant, [=Bauglir100=], [=ReloadPsi=], and [=DayDream=] have been the only ones to show their faces. Avirosb, [=MrGuyPwnsYou=], Hamsteere, Irrelevant, [=Bauglir100=], [=Hurpdurpmanguy=], and [=creatorofGandP=] are not at all shy about posting their opinions on the channel
* FanFic: Mouse Police: The Annotated Edition included a side story in which Raiden's Defenders of the Realm incarnation (one of the annotators' favourite characters) imprisoned each series' scrappies and forced them to watch this, breaking their wills until they either were trying to kill themselves or became babbling, nervous wrecks. The final glorious list:
** The three Bouchedag leads died ''a la'' [[Film/RaidersOfTheLostArk Lost Ark.]]
** [[WesternAnimation/TheAdventuresOfSuperMarioBros3 Kootie Pie]] became comatose, while [[WesternAnimation/SuperMarioWorld Big Mouth]] suffered a seizure.
** Phil got amnesia and might have been heading towards a more fulfilling life while Horatio frothed at the mouth.
** Ethan suffered from despair.
** Stryker became a nervous wreck.
** [[WesternAnimation/CaptainNTheGamemaster Kid Icarus]] attempted suicide but it didn't stick.
* FanNickname:
** "Silly The Willies" for Milli Vanilli. To some degree, "Kid Icky" for Kid Icarus. It's worth noting that these were [[MemeticMutation one-off nicknames used in the shows the characters were in and they just kinda caught on.]][[invoked]]
** "Sonic On The Ground" for ''Sonic Underground'', due to a {{Mondegreen}} of the German theme's lyrics.
* FiveManBand:
** TheHero: [=CurtDogg=] (The one who started it all way back.)
** TheLancer: jmr48080 (Personality wise the opposite of [=CurtDogg=] plus really funny.)
** TheSmartGuy: Avirosb (Saves videos and cleans up annotes that hang around a few seconds too long. Makes a good Hero for starting the second generation.)
** TheBigGuy: [=ReloadPsi=] (Appears for real in one of the videos and is, well, rather large.)
** TheChick: Irrelevant402 (Gets the angriest fastest but also is the one who made a list of frequent commentors and started the sucky process of sending single note after note to try to unify people after the annotation system could no longer allow guests. Another duty is he is the one who scans for frequent comment posters who want to join in on the group. When Avirosb is the hero he is his lancer.)
** TheSixthRanger: Enough to start a ''second'' five-man band.
*** TheHero: [=MrGuyPwnsYou=]
*** TheLancer: [=creatorofGandP=]
*** TheBigGuy: Hamsteere
*** TheSmartGuy: [=Hurpdurpmanguy=]
*** TheHeart: [=Bauglir100=]
* FromBadToWorse: First there was Bouchedags, then there was The Nutshack, then there was Jay's Life. Similarly, Doctor Rabbit could ''never'' have prepared them for Dr. D.
* FlatWhat: Many times, but the most triumphant was from The Hobbit when the narrator announces Bilbo's sudden growing love for the clearly pre-teenage princess.
* YeGoodeOldeDays: Very often mocked since highlights and improvements (from hunter tribe culture to the 50s) in gender, race, sexual orientation, medicine, science and video games have made life better. Sometimes subverted in which a few things were a bit better back then.
* GrammarNazi
* HairRaisingHare:The main character of the ''Annotated Bunny Rabbit Movie'' due its creepy UncannyValley features.
* HeroicBSOD: Sometimes the material is just that bad that some Annotators give up part way, or at the very least are so lost for witty remarks that they instead post annotations expressing their disbelief at the quality.
* HijackedByGanon: Enforced in one episode of ''The Legend of Zelda: The Annotated Series'', when annotators started to add annotations of Ganon discussing "his" evil plans, after they became impatient when waiting for Ganon to show up in the actual episode, which never happened.
* HypocriticalHumor: Occasional. For example, in SMBSS Episode 20:
--> I mean what kind of idiotic group would enjoy overused [=DiC=] stock music?[[note]]Referring to the ever-popular Surf Music[[/note]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:I-Z]]
* IAmLegion: Since the axing of the collaborative annotations feature, it's no longer possible to hover over an annotation and see who added it, making it pretty hard to tell who's saying what. This has led to some viewers believe this is a solo project. The annotators don't do [[ColorCodedForYourConvenience very much]] to make themselves recognizable among one-another either. Among a list of almost fifty annotators, only a few stand out, such as [=CurtDogg=] for originating the concept, [=jmr48080=] for being considered one of the funniest annotators during the beeupyou era, [=Irrelevant402=] for always picking horrible intermissions, Avirosb for recording episodes and getting the ball rolling with the [=TheAnnotatXperiment=] channel, [=ReloadPsi=] for essentially putting himself in some of the videos, and [=Bauglir100=] for arranging the new schedule for the series.
* IKnewIt: ''Unintentional.'' In [=FoodFight=] part two, one of the annotators mentions that [[spoiler:Christopher Lloyd looks like [[UncannyValley some]] ''[[UncannyValley thing]]'' [[UncannyValley is controlling him from inside,]] Men In Black-style.]] Come the ending, [[spoiler:it turns out he was a robot.]] The guesser got pissed off about it. [[invoked]]
* InformedAbility: One of the many things they love to rip on. Especially when the antagonists are so vaguely on the cusp of victory with Armor of Light being one of the most triumphant examples.
--> Pastor Dan: "Now you all know that we face a very DANGEROUS enemy."
--> Annotator:Perhaps we could take a few minutes to establish WHY they (NME) are so dangerous?
* InnerMonologue: Sometimes inserted when a character is just standing there saying nothing.
* InsistentTerminology: Don't call it a monster, call it a "[[WesternAnimation/StreetFighter kaibutsu]]."
* InsultOfEndearment: Captain N's Simon was called Faux-Simon since he was very little like the real Simon. As it went on the nickname was somewhat kept merely to tell the two Simon's apart with a lot less malice behind it.
* ItIsPronouncedTropay:
** Bye son!
** YESH!
* KeepCirculatingTheTapes: Defied. Avirosb has been recording the annotated episodes in case anything causes their work to be lost, that way they can just be reuploaded either on the channel or somewhere else.
* KickTheDog: Sometimes even the Annotators see some dog kicking. One exception was Wombatman calling out Kid Icarus on his 'icus' problem. That was supposed to be a KickTheDog moment but lots went crazy over it.
* LeftHanging: Street Fighter, in which every unresolved plot thread was listed during the final scene.
* {{Leitmotif}}: If DiCEntertainment replaces a licensed song with the "surf music" these people jump all over it, especially after it played for about ten seconds in the first episode of Captain N following a long absence.
* LullDestruction: Expect any scene without dialogue to be filled with speech bubbles.
* MadeOfExplodium:
** The Kootie Pie tolerance meter exploded about five seconds after she began to sing Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.
** All the newspapers from the Paperboy episode of Captain N.
** Mocked in Sonic Underground, where the annotators are increasingly baffled by the SWAT-bots tendency to explode from ''anything.''
* ManipulativeEditing: Episodes of The Super Mario Bros. Super Annotated Show are being uploaded with the Zelda previews cut down to a single clip, and seem to be leaning in the direction of replacing the end titles music with something else each episode.
* {{Mondegreen}}: [[InUniverse Usually deliberate]]. Anything sounding more like profanity than it actually is makes for a common target. It became especially common during Captain N as they often had no idea what Mother Brain was saying otherwise.
** Also from Captain N, "Havin' a Log!" from the Season Two song "Havin' a Ball". Became a minor running gag brought up whenever logs are involved.
** Mother Brain-type subtitles was brought back for one-off character Kong Fu from [[{{WesternAnimation/DonkeyKongCountry}} Donkey Kong Country.]]
* MenAreGenericWomenAreSpecial: Often when TheSmurfettePrinciple rears its head the female character will complain about not being allowed to be wacky or not allowed to be wrong like the men or having to be subjected to a GirlsNightOutEpisode just to get focus.
* {{Misblamed}}: Yes, Irrelevant was the that whined for Nutshack and Beauty and Warrior when intermissions were nearing. He certainly wasn't the one to uploaded them with the only thing he put up was 'Annotated Fan Fiction.' Considering their horrible quality he is far from innocent of course.
** The annotators seem to think that the WesternAnimation/DonkeyKongCountry animated series was a DiCEntertainment production. The show was actually produced by {{Nelvana}} and WIC Entertainment.
* MilestoneCelebration: Subverted in that it was given a quick murmur at the end of a video announcing that they were taking down Foodfight. They'd just hit 1,000 subscribers.
* MindScrew: {{Beauty and Warrior}} and Theevan confused annotators hard.
* MistakenForMasturbating: Played with big time when King Hippo reached into his pants for pieces of paper, and when he briefly appeared to be doing it while looking at one of them.
* MoodWhiplash: Pointed out repeatedly for ''Tricky People,'' which involved both a singing yellow dinosaur, and uncomfortable scenes of implied child molestation.
** Pointed out during the beginning of the Bibleman "Fight For Faith" episode where a group of thugs are robbing a factory full of bibles who plan on buring them, are cheerfully dancing around while loading them up.
---> '''Annotation''': Read your Bible everyday- or THIS COULD BE YOU
* MoralityPet: Sometimes they, the annotators, serve as morality pets to one another to keep everyone in line and each one is disgusted by child molestors or horrible ethnic sterotypes. Irrelvant tends to try to befriend all religions, and non-ones, and mocks extremists in general.
* MsFanservice: The Dark Queen from Battletoads and the woman from Icecapdes with 'DAT SHOULDER.'
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Sometimes Irrelevant thinks he goes a little too far...sometimes. And admitted it was he who played up Gameboy as the worst thing ever. Going off memories of hating Game Boy as a kid and being okay with Icarus and Megaman.
* MythologyGag: Given that just about every Captain N episode gets some element of the games wrong, correcting remarks will flare up all over the place.
* NecessarilyEvil: Why Irrelevant402 likes pushing for BileFascination every once in a while. Sometimes it is good to rage on something horrible and it helps appreciate the SoBadItsGood stuff.
** [=YouTube=] itself.
* NeverLiveItDown: See BondOneLiner above. In addition: [[invoked]]
** In one episode of Captain N, Kevin said "time for a power move!" only to fall flat on his ass. This has been referenced several times when someone stumbles during a fight scene. Whenever Kevin is hailed as a great hero someone brings up that the 'hero' is too terrified to clean his room.
** On a meta level, Irrelevant will ''always'' be remembered for The Nutshack and Beauty And Warrior.
** In the first episode of ''The Super Mario Bros. Super Show'', Bowser/King Koopa demanded that two random minions [[IKissYourFoot lick his feet.]] A reference to this now occurs practically OnceAnEpisode.
** Larry/Cheatsy calls himself the "Emperor of Eavesdropping" in one episode of [[WesternAnimation/TheAdventuresOfSuperMarioBros3 SMB3 the Annotated Series]], leading to "I am the [Title] of [Alliterative action]" jokes. for just about every episode he's in.
* NeverSayDie: Repeatedly mocked.
-->'''Character:''' Destroy them!
-->'''Annotation:''' But don't kill them!
** This sometimes gets twisted around when "Kill" used in place of "Destroy".
* NightmareFuelStationAttendant: Doogan from the Dr. Rabbit puppet show.
* NostalgiaFilter: Averted, as many of the series are based on late 80s/early 90s video games, especially Captain N, and they will be loathe to admit any of said games are done justice. There have been many derogatory remarks about the use of late 80s/early 90s fashion and lingo as well, and how they don't allow their shows to age well.
* NotBad: At least one commentator complimented Ganon teleporting to his throne, and [[UpToEleven even more so when]] he teleported to stand sideways on the wall.
** Occasionally, one or two commentators will also compliment the plot in general for being (relatively) well-thought-out and interesting.
** While others mostly disliked it, season 2, episode 8 of ''Captain N'' had small praise for its ending, where the Dwarves and Elves go back into fighting right after settling their differences, which was praised as realistic by at least one annotation and comment due to problems like racism taking a ''long'' time to fix.
* NotThatTheresAnythingWrongWithThat: Eggplant Wizard and King Hippo... just make them an official couple already!
* OcularGushers: An annotater's edit in the ''Donkey Kong Country'' episode "Klump's Lumps" is made to give this impression when Klump is wailing and flailing on a log.
* OffModel[=/=]SpecialEffectsFailure: Appears so often that they have their own recurring jokes.
** ''Sonic Underground'' in particular '''loved''' to point out the animators obsession with fucked up model sheets; blatantly wrong perspectives and creepy Sleet faces.
* OhCrap: The somewhat unexpected appearance of parts 2-4 of The Nutshack, and later The Little Panda Fighter.
* OnceAnEpisode: Certain shows get this treatment. "X sez/says", as a tribute to Sonic Says, has appeared in ''Mortal Kombat'' animated whenever a character has a moral to teach.
* OneOfUs: Sometimes, the people will point out a trope, though they won't always link it.
** Also crosses over into LampshadeHanging territory when one [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRXnOe5T1JQ takes a look at the tags for Captain N season 2, episode 1.]]
** This very page is mostly maintained by the annotators, though with there being so many of them they rarely end up talking about themselves.
* OutOfOrder: They swapped episode 5 and 7 of the third season of ''Captain N''. Why? Because episode 5 was the final episode where the entire main cast as well as Mother Brain, King Hippo, and Eggplant Wizard appeared together.
* OverlyLongGag: The title of Sonic Undergound will invariably have any or all of On The Ground, And A Graph, Rubber Band, Sir Nick The Rebel, It's Annie Clarabel, Kinda Growled, So Nick Ander's Crown, tacked on at the end.
* PacManFever: Mercilessly lampshaded at times, especially considering 99% of these cases are in cartoons based on games, something you'd expect to get it right!
* PlayingPictionary: X-Box 360 games in VHS cases in ''CtrlAltDel'', pizza wheels being carried by the evil army in ''Captain N'', just to name a few.
* PyrrhicVictory: Because Irrelevant didn't know how to upload he clamored/Whined for Animation/BeautyAndWarrior to be annotated... and he finally got it!.. Only problem was what came before it was Mouse Police. A film that made less sense, had poorer animation, was dubbed awfully and helped make ''Beauty and Warrior'' shrink to SoOkayItIsAverage during the same weekend intermission!
* QuipToBlack: A few of these are inserted, and they come [[CSIMiami complete with sunglasses]] made out of black box annotations. YEEEEAAAAHHHHHHH!!!
* RecycledInSpace: ''[[Series/MysteryScienceTheater3000 MST3K]]''... [[FootnoteFever IN TEXT FORM]]!!! Though raunchier, half scripted and half improvised and more Generation Y friendly.
* ReferenceOverdosed: It's based on ''[=MST3K=]'' and the subject matter is overwhelmingly cartoons and/or video games -- this was unavoidable. Also see Running Gag and Shout Out.
* {{Retirony}}: When [=CurtDogg=] was uploading Street Fighter: The Annotated Series as beeupyou, the collaborative annotation feature was discontinued with only two episodes to go.
* RedOniBlueOni: Just about any pair up, Irrelevant believes in being aggresive and striking at as many works as possible while Avirosb prevers focus firing when intermissions occur.
* RhymesOnADime: The surf music lyrics throughout season 1 of Captain N don't usually rhyme until the chorus.
* RougeAnglesOfSatin: At times.
* RunningGag: [[RunningGag/TheAnnotatedSeries Enough to have their own page.]]
* SarcasmFailure: At times.
* SayMyName: A monster rising from the bayou in an early Captain N episode shouted "Captain N!" in a manner similar to [[WebAnimation/HomestarRunner Strong Bad singing Trogdor.]] Cue suggested alternate lyrics.
* ScheduleSlip: Starting with ''The Legend of Zelda'', uploads shifted from one episode every few days to every Friday (sometimes slipping to Saturday), due to the reduced number of contributors. The decision to annotate both ''Sonic Underground'' and ''The Super Mario Bros. Super Show'' saw a return to a more frequent schedule, with the former posted on Tuesdays and the latter on Fridays.
* ScrewedByTheNetwork: The fateful day when [=YouTube=] discontinued collaborative annotations. Beeupyou's channel now serves as an archive of past works, with the shared channel being how they now do things, but it took about a month to get it set up while everyone campaigned in vain for the collaborative annotations feature to be reinstated. Also, every time [=YouTube=] makes changes to the annotation editor, it's not uncommon to see the Annotators criticise these in the channel comments.
** And now Pause annotations have been removed, although whether or not it's a bad thing is debatable.
* SelfDeprecation: They all tend to make fun of themselves from time to time, at the least, for having no lives.
* SelfFulfillingProphecy: See the Spoiler entry below.
* SeriousBusiness: Apparently The Nutshack and a number of other horrible shows are akin to nuclear weapons. Make a threat with one and people will do whatever it takes to stop them being uploaded. Or maybe they're just playing along with the gag.
* ShamelessSelfPromotion: Just about all the material they annotate comes across as this.
** Somewhat played with in Annotated Daydream which was uploaded because one of the annotators wanted to see them make fun of his old band that had broken up.
* ShownTheirWork:
** People will sometimes throw in actual production tidbits into their annotations.
** "X does not work that way!"
** During Captain N: Videolympics, Kevin is made to suggest "Swimming gala?" when Mother Brain issues her challenge. The letter "N" on a letterman jacket signifies being on the school swimming team.
*** Naturally they were delighted when the show revealed he really WAS on the swimming team.
* ShoutOut: [[ShoutOut/TheAnnotatedSeries Plenty, so they get their own page.]]
* SincerityMode: Surprisingly common when you take into account all their NotBad, CerebusSyndrome, ShownTheirWork and DudeNotFunny moments, and so on.
* DarthWiki/SoBadItsHorrible: The most mutual agreement for this would be "Bouchedags" and [[UpToEleven even more so]] ''The Nutshack''. The latter had an OhCrap moment from most of the Annotators when the rest of episode one was uploaded. Along with Video Bininquido[=/=]Toybox Video's crap and Mouse Police.
** Popeye and Son was so awful and bland people rather annotated '''[[{{WesternAnimation/DingoPictures}} Dingo Pictures]]''' over it.
* SophisticatedAsHell: Sometimes there are actual well thought out notes on pacing problems and inconsistent characterization with some swear words thrown in.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: Ironically subverted by having one of their favourite characters, Cheatsy Koopa, run into some kind of death portal in his final scene. Given that they annotated Super Mario 3 AFTER doing Super Mario World, the original canon had him going on to make many appearances in the next series.
* {{Spoiler}}:
** ''"GAME BOY IS COMING"''
** If a plot point is brought up it will be highlighted.
** Sonic Underground's "Will the prophecy come true?!" was met with "NO" and "Spoiler: They never find their mother."
* SpoofAesop: The moral of CartoonAllStarsToTheRescue is apparently "take drugs and all your favorite cartoon characters will show up to talk to you."
** The DS Lite sketch from Ctrl+Alt+Del episode 5: Eating disorders make you beautiful!
** Episode 9 of ''Donkey Kong Country'' has "BUY ATARI" as the moral (as a reference to that episode's commercial breaks being nothing '''''but''''' Atari commercials).
* StatusQuoIsGod: Mocked a lot since they're not big fan of episodic non-arc based series. Though when there are continuity nods or signs of character development the praise is heaped on.
* SuddenDownerEnding: [=HurpDurpManGuy=] wrote some ''very'' depressing endings to the members of the N Team in credits of the final Captain N episode. The only characters he gave mercy to were the [[EnsembleDarkhorse Darkhorses]], that being Simon, Duke, King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard, and Game Boy.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Many new series and intermissions will have the main characters' names in the opening credits replaced by the names of characters from the CAD cartoon.
* SwordOfDamocles: Before an intermission that looked to be sparse, Irrelevant threatened to upload The Nutshack. Cue several uploads.
* TakeThat: Admit it, of the shows these guys annotate, even when you were a child you thought they were a bit rubbish.
** Aside from this, when the star of "The Annotated Bunny Rabbit Movie" begins to dance in an awkward fashion, it's said to still be "better than the dance from Creator/TimBurton's Film/AliceInWonderland".
** Youtube Copyright School gave many annotators a chance to call out on Youtube's unprofessional standards on what is considered "copyright infringing".
* TeamDad: beeupyou and Avirosb for the Annotators.
* TechnologyMarchesOn: Always called out with the lack of certain modern-day techs. However, when Dr. D says that acne can be cleared out with soap and water, he's called out for making the situation worse -- soap can actually undo the good that facial grease is trying to do. [[invoked]]
** The burial of the Nick time capsule had ''a lot'' of this with most of the tech mentioned being all but gone by the 2000's. Bizarrely it also had some aversions; apparently some kid thought that ''bikes'' would be forgotten about by the 2042.
** Referenced during ''Backside To The Future''. A character pulls out a large blocky, metallic-looking folder causing one annotator to riff "this is my cell-phone".
* TemptingFate: THE UNBREAKABLE ANNOTATION
* TenMinuteRetirement: It isn't too odd for one of the annotators to announce they are taking a break from mocking stuff.
* TheFifties: Mocked in Captain N [=S2E4=].
--> Mayor Of Tetris: Well I'll be a son of a cube! You're round faced!
--> Annotation: Hmm you're different from us. Are we going to have to chase you out like those Muslims, queers and blacks?

--> Mayor: We haven't had any round faces for hundreds of years!
--> Annotations: And we're going to keep it that way!/ We can start a lynch mob, just like the old days!/ Because we killed them all!
* TheUnintelligible: During season 2 of ''Captain N'', it seems to get harder to understand Mother Brain.
* ThisIsGonnaSuck: Every series and intermission starts out like this.
* ThrowTheDogABone: Whenever their least favorite character in a series does something redeeming.
* TimeForPlanB: After many ignored attempts to convince [=YouTube=] to restore collaborative annotations, the shared channel was set up.
* TookALevelInBadAss: People sure liked the Luigi from Ice Capades that took on Koopa's army all by himself... with a bazooka-rifle.
* UnPaused: Less common now, but stray frames and sounds from previous episodes or cut credit rolls left in by editing errors prior to upload would be subject to at least one joke.
-->"Uk!"
* UnusualEuphemism: "Miscarriage" for, oh, pretty much anything.
* UpToEleven: When hurpdurpmanguy uploaded Super Hornio Brothers, a spoof porno of the Mario series, many of the members thought it was going to be the last video they annotated.
** SeriesFauxnale: The sheer amount of annotations (The Hobbit, Food Fight!, Doug Live) ending with the climax of Hornio Brothers would have made a good finale. This wasn't the intention but long as the channel is still up with Hornio...
* VillainDecay: Complained about with [[ComicBook/TheSavageDragon Arachnid]], who started off as fairly creepy and menacing, but his first appearance in Season 2 features him as far more humorous and comical.
-->"I remember when Arachnid was slightly more terrifying than now.."
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Intermissions have included clips of the Mario 3 cartoon with removed songs edited back in.
** The group was originally going to annotate ''WesternAnimation/WingCommanderAcademy'' alongside the 13 leftover live-action segments of the ''WesternAnimation/SuperMarioBrosSuperShow''. But when they discovered that there were no episodes to be found on Youtube, they decided to annotate ''WesternAnimation/{{Darkstalkers}}'' instead.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Brought up whenever some plot point or bit character is seemingly forgotten. Because of the Mario programs being done out of order Oogtar's disappearance was explained with 'eaten for nourishment' while the team traveled through ice lands.
* WhosOnFirst: In Captain N [=S2E12=].
-->''Kid Icarus:'' "Who-icus?"
-->''Julio:'' "No, HOO-LI-O."
* WithLyrics: Captain N episode 2 on onward gave lyrics to the surf music. [[HilariousInHindsight Then in Season 2, Episode 8,]] [[FunnyAneurysmMoment they heard the real lyrics instead of the instrumental version.]] Reaction was mixed, with some loving it and some being disappointed. Also those willing to click the "Bonus Feature" annotation that shows up at the end of some of them get an [[MusicalEpisode interesting treat]].
* YouHaveGotToBeKiddingMe: Frequent.
* VictoryIsBoring: With some alternate character interpretation Eggplant and Hippo decide to 'fall' for Kevin and Link's ISurrenderSuckers trick because they prefer a challenge as followers.
* ViewerGenderConfusion: The annotators weren't able to tell that Pitfall Harry's niece was a girl for the first half of the short due to the horrendous video quality. [[invoked]]
