Jacob Hope Chapman, aka [=JesuOtaku=] (and formerly Hope Chapman, before coming out as transgender in 2016), is by far one of the most successful and analytical of the former Website/DesuDesBrigade, formerly a member of Website/ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.

He produces a review segment simply entitled "The [=JesuOtaku=] Anime Review". His review approach is very analytical, using a four-star[[labelnote:*]]From a minimum of one star to a maximum of four, with half-star increments, yielding 7 total possible ratings.[[/labelnote]] rating system. He tries to be as objective as possible and may give high scores to shows that he doesn't personally like. He also produced his "summer project", an audio drama adaptation of ''Manga/FruitsBasket'', every Wednesday throughout summer 2011 (and which can be found [[http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/ir/jo/fruits-basket-radio-drama here]] if you're interested). He is notable for his large amount of shows:

* [[http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/ir/jo/in In-Betweens]]
* [[http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/ir/jo/nl New Lyrics]]
* [[http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/ir/jo/jolp Various]] {{Lets Play}}s.

Since joining Website/ThatGuyWithTheGlasses, he gained a great degree of success previously unseen. Despite efforts to keep the Website/DesuDesBrigade alive, he made the decision to officially leave the Brigade. This news, however, was rather redundant as the Brigade disbanded.

His videos can be found [[https://www.youtube.com/user/JesuOtaku here]] and he is [[https://twitter.com/#!/JesuOtaku here]] on {{Twitter}}. He also has a live stream, [[http://www.justin.tv/jesuotaku here]] and he can be found [[http://www.formspring.me/JesuOtaku here]] on Formspring. Additionally, he has also often appeared on [[WebVideo/WhatTheFuckIsWrongWithYou Nash]]'s long running Radio Dead Air internet radio show, which can be found [[http://live.radiodeadair.com/ here]]. He set up his own website in December 2012, which has everything he has a major role in, such as crossovers and panels at conventions, [[http://www.jesuotaku.com/ here.]]

In January 2013, Jacob announced that he'd be part of an adaptation of ''VisualNovel/KatawaShoujo'', named ''Katawa Seiyu'' being released on Website/YouTube. The trailer is [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNBlZiEfY8o here.]] JO himself has recorded auditions for several characters, which can be listened to [[https://soundcloud.com/jesuotaku/sets/katawa-seiyu-demos here]]. He has been cast as the voice of [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} Rin]] [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zz16z8-8hwo Tezuka]].

Sadly, in October 2014, [[http://blip.tv/jesuotaku/jo-says-goodbye-7083718 he has decided to call it quits]] due to [[{{Screwed by the Network}} decreasing Ad revenue]] on {{blip}} and his new job at Website/{{Anime News Network}}, leaving any still-running series abandoned. He is currently the head of PangoDango Games, who are developing their first visual novel, ''VisualNovel/LovelyLittleThieves'', due for release later in 2015.
----
!![=JesuOtaku=] provides examples of the following tropes:

* AbortedArc: Has happened twice, as Jacob has stated on Formspring that he doesn't do plot arcs in his reviews:
** The first was after the ''Highschool Of The Dead'' review, where it seemed like Jesu was going to make other people watch bad anime (like what Sage had done to him), but since then, nothing's happened.
** The second is from WebVideo/ToBoldlyFlee, the fourth anniversary video for TGWTG- at the end, it's shown that [[Anime/CowboyBebop Edward]] was still in Jesu's mind, but Jacob jossed any hopes Edward would be back in his reviews.
* {{Adorkable}}
* AllAdultAnimationIsSouthPark: Discussed in a few episodes. One of the many reasons JO lists for loving anime is how Japanese animation has more freedom to explore more themes and genres than here in the West, where animation is seen as either "a man-child comedy" (''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'', ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark'', ''WesternAnimation/{{Futurama}}'', ''WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy'', ''WesternAnimation/AmericanDad'', and more), or straight-up "[[AnimationAgeGhetto for children]]."
* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: In his in-universe [[LetsPlay LP]] of ''VideoGame/SuperMario64'', he does a first-person, diary-like monologue if [[Franchise/SuperMarioBros Mario]] was actually an Italian plumber from...well...Italy, felt like he was hallucinating, and eventually became a thrill-seeking, [[AxeCrazy sociopathic]], [[EvilOverlord evil-overlord-to-be]] with [[AGodAmI a god complex]] who never "gets some" from [[LoveInterest Peach]].
** His recent 'Penguin Lottery' can easily point to a more {{Ax Crazy}} side of JO.
* ArchEnemy: WebVideo/BennettTheSage, who subjects him to terrible anime in attempts to break hi, because...that's not really clear.
** In the ''Manga/HighschoolOfTheDead'' review, it's revealed to be [[spoiler:a combination of CorruptTheCutie and PassingTheTorch once JO, like himself, finds a self-admittedly bad anime that he still wants to share with the world.]]
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: A common thread in his written introductions for each of the villains in his "Top 20 Deliciously Evil Villains".
* AuthorAppeal: He seems to have a liking to adding emoticons anytime he has to add text on a clip.
** Taken UpToEleven in his review of ''Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica'', where he takes great delight in abusing [[MemeticMutation Kyubey's face]] /人◕‿‿◕人\.
* AuthorFilibuster: He used his ''Anime/{{FLCL}}'' review as an opportunity to go on a rant about how Creator/StudioGainax are complete HACKS when it comes to making [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion Psychological]] [[Anime/ThisUglyYetBeautifulWorld Dramas]] and that they should stick to [[RuleOfCool over-the-top goofiness]] and simple morals. He addressed this fact on his Website/{{Twitter}}, and stated that the reason he did this was because ''Anime/{{FLCL}}'' was just way too simple for even ''him'' to talk about at length.
** His ''Manga/HighschoolOfTheDead'' dub overview gives him a good chance to vent about why he loathes Stephen Foster's adaptive work.
** To avoid spoilers in his review of ''Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica'', he instead decided to talk about how a DarkerAndEdgier {{Subversion}} for its own sake is not inherently [[TropesAreNotGood good]].
* BerserkButton:
** InUniverse, {{Moe}}, and now also an ecchi comedy about BrotherSisterIncest called ''[[Manga/OniichanNoKotoNankaZenzenSukiJanainDakaraNe Oniichan No Koto Na...]]'' [[LongTitle ah, screw it]]. He found it painful just to get through ''the first minute'' of the first episode.
** He also seems to have a real and legitimate hatred of people questioning him on why he doesn't care for ''[[Manga/FullmetalAlchemist Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood]]''. To be fair, this is because people did this ''incessantly'' after he made his lukewarm feelings towards it clear. The same is true for the ''Manga/{{Berserk}}'' manga and the episode "Boogie Woogie Feng Shui" from ''Anime/CowboyBebop''. Also, don't get him started on any recent work done by ADR Director/Scriptwriter Steven Foster.
** Also comes into effect when someone dismisses anime and/or manga as a legitimate art form, like [[WebVideo/BrowsHeldHigh Oancitizen]] did in their crossover review of TheMovie of ''Anime/RevolutionaryGirlUtena'':
-->'''Jesu:''' Do I have to [[Film/ThreeHundred Sparta Kick]] you [[DestinationDefenestration through a window]]? [[[KnuckleCracking cracks knuckles]]]
* BrainBleach:
** Probably needed it after ''Manga/IkkiTousen'', and even more after ''Eiken'', never mind ''Anime/MasterOfMartialHearts''...
** Subverted in his ''Anime/MasterOfMartialHearts'' review, surprisingly. Sage got a PyrrhicVictory there.
* BreakTheCutie:
** Usually calm and collected, JO was reduced to a fit of hysterical rage by the final fight of the ''Manga/YuYuHakusho: Dark Tournament'' [[LetsPlay video game.]]
** WebVideo/BennettTheSage 's goal for him. So far he's failed all three times.
** He was reduced to tears after [[ShipSinking his ship was sunk]] in the Franchise/{{Digimon}} Movie.
* BreakupBreakout: Not quite. Rather than leaving the [[Website/DesuDesBrigade Brigade]] after joining up with Website/ThatGuyWithTheGlasses, he still tried to be a loyal brigadier, and his new-found popularity did in fact bring in more viewers to the Brigade's site; however, his indecisiveness coupled with his AttentionDeficitCreatorDisorder caused him to grow increasingly distant from the Brigade, unofficially breaking off from it about a year from its official disbandment.
* BriefAccentImitation: Takes on a self-admittedly goofy Brooklyn gangster accent for the introduction of his ''LightNovel/{{Baccano}}'' review.
* BrokeTheRatingScale: JO gave ''[=KissXSis=]'' a -5/5 and ''Manga/OniichanNoKotoNankaZenzenSukiJanainDakaraNe'' a GTFO.
* CatchPhrase:
** "[[Manga/YuYuHakusho Sayonara, bye bye!]]"
** "On the technical side of things..."
** "All in all..."
** "That's not a metaphor."
* CatsAreMean: One of JO's cats (the calico) isn't very friendly, as seen in the review for ''Manga/FruitsBasket''.
* CheshireCatGrin / SlasherSmile: Sage looks ''terrifying'' at the end of the ''Manga/KoiKaze'' review. Seriously, he looks like the cat out of ''VideoGame/AmericanMcGeesAlice''.
** As is evidenced in his review of ''[[VisualNovel/HigurashiWhenTheyCry Higurashi]]'', JO is fully capable of doing this on his own, coupled with a ''[[CreepyAwesome chilling]]'' EvilLaugh.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}:
** It's not as apparent in his reviews, but if you watch his Let's Plays, especially the ''Videogame/StarFox64'' and ''VideoGame/SuperMario64'' ones, it becomes clear that JO is something of one.
** He also mentions in his ''Manga/AzumangaDaioh'' review that among his friends, he's known as the [[TropeCodifier Osaka]] of the group.
* CompanionCube: His [[FunWithSubtitles snarktitles]]. Until they have a brief falling out about their use in the ''Anime/NowAndThenHereAndThere'' review, making up afterward. They were ''not'' happy when [[WebVideo/WhatTheFuckIsWrongWithYou Nash]] subbed in to review ''WesternAnimation/TransformersAnimated''.
* CoolBigSis: He lets his little sister make cameos in the live-action intros (''Manga/{{BECK}}'' and ''Anime/PrincessTutu'' being notable examples), and off-screen shares some of the more child-friendly anime with his.
* CouchGag: TheTeaser of each episode has JO doing something relating to the subject: For ''Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann'', he's dressed as Yoko and making a appropriately HotBlooded speech, for ''Manga/{{Mahoromatic}}'', he acts as a maid but can't keep it up and for ''Manga/{{Chobits}}'' he's [[BrainUploading installed his mind in a new body]].
* CovertPervert: JO may be very academic and studious, but he might have a dirtier mind then [[Website/DesuDesBrigade Vix]], as seen in "[[http://www.desudesbrigade.com/2010/05/pocky-spot-episode-22-2/ Pocky Spot 22]]":
-->"Kyoya, you're not quite dressed for the occasion; ''you have to take your pants off too!''"
-->"The correct response to this situation would be to grab his shoulders, throw him on the bed and ride him like a stallion!"
* {{Crossover}}: The number has been steadily rising since he joined [=TGWTG=]. Notable examples include:
** His status as a regular on Nash's [[WebVideo/WhatTheFuckIsWrongWithYou WTFIWWY]] and Radio Dead Air. (He returns the favor by appearing on his streams on a regular basis, and also appeared in his review of ''WesternAnimation/TransformersAnimated''.)
** A review of ''Film/SuckerPunch'' with [[WebVideo/BadMovieBeatdown Film Brain]].
** The ''Anime/RevolutionaryGirlUtena'' movie with Oancitizen of WebVideo/BrowsHeldHigh.
** Reviewing ''Franchise/{{Digimon}}: TheMovie'' with WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic.
** A role in the TGWTG fourth anniversary film, ''WebVideo/ToBoldlyFlee''.
* CrowningMusicOfAwesome: His "Top 15 Dub Themes", invoked in-universe. Topping the list was, but of course, ''[[Anime/{{Pokemon}} Pokémon]]''. Nothing specific, just ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}''.
* DeadpanSnarker: His "snarktitles" in all of his reviews but ''Anime/NowAndThenHereAndThere''.
* DearNegativeReader: Released a full-length one over his Twitter sometime around mid/late-2011 in response to the frequent complaints about his aforementioned ADCD. It's now nearly impossible to find due to JO tweeting like a hamster on coffee.
* DespairEventHorizon: Bennett the Sage keeps trying to "break" Jesu by showing his horrible, sick anime. It eventually backfired when he got over it, but ''he'' got depressed.
* DoesNotLikeGuns: Makes it very clear in the Summer 2013 Anime Derby that he dislikes guns when he gives his opinion on how Stella Academy C3 treated the subject.
* DrinkingGame: One for his weekly livestream [[https://docs.google.com/document/d/1y1cqaPK3ejGT4mqOAMjSxnqKqkb9IdLcZ9V4dmZA5zc/edit here.]]
* EroticEating: Subverted in the end credits for the ''Eiken'' review.
* EvilIsCool: {{Invoked|Trope}} as the main criteria for his "Top 20 Deliciously Evil Villains" list.
* {{Fingore}}: His review of ''LightNovel/{{Baccano}}'' got a rating of "three and a half de-fingerings out of four".
* FakeBrit: [[invoked]] He makes fun of this trope at the beginning of his ''{{Anime/Hellsing}}'' review.
--> [[OnceAnEpisode Hello, and welcome to the [=JesuOtaku=] Anime Review.]] Your mission today is to sit right where you are and listen to me talk about vampires [[LampshadeHanging in a very baloney British accent.]] May God and Her Majesty be with you. Amen.
* {{Fanservice}}:
** He dresses in a bikini top and shorts for his ''Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann'' review intro, emulating Yoko.
** When reviewing the ''Anime/{{Witchblade}}'' anime--after eviscerating ''Manga/IkkiTousen'', ''Eiken'', and ''Anime/MasterOfMartialHearts''--he points out he doesn't ''hate'' {{Fanservice}}, but is sick of it being used in an incompetent or misogynistic fashion.
* [[FarmBoy Farm Gal]]
* FunWithAcronyms:
** '''P'''riggish '''M'''eryl '''S'''trife from ''Trigun''. She's-- hold on.
-->'''JO:''' That [[MenstrualMenace explains an awful lot]], actually!
** Ditzy Millie Thompson. ([[MushroomSamba DMT]])
* FunWithSubtitles: The "snarktitles" that point things out and make witty asides about the action on screen without JO's narration having to go off on tangents. Sometimes they undercut or make fun of his, too. While introducing the review for ''Anime/NowAndThenHereAndThere'', JO gets into a fight with them.
* GagBoobs: To make fun of the large breasts of one of the main characters in the anime ''Anime/{{Grenadier}}'', JO stuffed soccer balls up the top of his T-shirt, and as part of the joke, and even balanced a plate of food on them and ate from it. In his last Q&A, [[Website/DesuDesBrigade Vixen]] made a TakeThat to that, by doing the same with his ''real'' boobs.
* GagNose: In his ''Manga/{{Phoenix}}'' review, he points out a recurring character's bulbous and almost tumorous nose. He even plays the ''Film/{{Inception}}'' music while zooming the camera in on it to point out how bizarre it is.
* GenkiGirl: According to the cast commentary for ''WebVideo/ToBoldlyFlee'', Hope doesn't walk into a room, he bounces.
* HeroesLoveDogs: He's been shown playing with a roommate's dog, and his love for wolves is part of why he loves ''Manga/WolfsRain''.
* HeyItsThatVoice: [[invoked]] JO plays this game a few times, more notably in his review of ''Manga/JyuOhSei''.
* HurricaneOfEuphemisms: While summarizing ''Manga/IkkiTousen'', JO went through just about every synonym for [[PantyShot underwear]] (and a few breast mentions as well). It underscores that [[ThisIsGonnaSuck this review is going to be rough]].
* ItIsPronouncedTroPAY: YAY-zoo? JEH-soo? He's pronounced it both ways...
* KindheartedCatLover: He enjoys letting cats show up (i.e. his roommates' cats) in his videos.
* LeftHanging: He was doing retrospective reviews for ''Manga/{{Trigun}}'' and ''Anime/{{Digimon}}'' but stopped halfway through them and never continued. For the former He reached the halfway mark where the Gung-Ho-Guns started to enter the anime before stopping. For the latter he managed to reach the ''Tamers'' series but stopped when it came time to review the other kids outside the main heroes.
* LetsPlay: ''VideoGame/StarFox64'', ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaMajorasMask'', and ''VideoGame/SuperMario64'' on the Nintendo64.
* MagnificentBastard: Invoked in his "Top 20 Deliciously Evil Villains" list; this is the basic criteria he goes for in order for a villain to be counted as "deliciously evil".
* MoodWhiplash: Directly after reviewing ''Manga/FruitsBasket'', JO reviewed ''Anime/NowAndThenHereAndThere'', an anime he considered too depressing to even make fun of.
* MotorMouth: Gets into this mode occasionally.
* MultiColoredHair: Once sported black hair with red highlights. Generally nowadays has red hair with either a brighter shade of red or blonde in his hair.
* NakedPeopleAreFunny: In the ''Anime/{{Witchblade}}'' review, as he has no clean laundry and a job interview:
--> '''[=JesuOtaku=]:''' By God, if I can't make a good impression, I might as well make a ''lasting'' one!
* NoodleImplements: He kept interrupting Nash's intro to his "Top Classic Doctor" review to ask him for yarn, raw meat, rebar and really sturdy bricks.
* NotMakingThisUpDisclaimer:
** The line "That's not a metaphor" is something of a RunningGag.
** A particularly unbelievable bit in ''Anime/MasterOfMartialHearts'' gets a "THIS IS A THING THAT HAPPENS" caption.
* PetPeeveTrope: [[invoked]] [[{{Glurge}} Forced drama]], {{Moe}} pandering, {{Ecchi}}, "Exactly like the Japanese version" dubs, [[EndingAversion shoddy endings]], {{Gorn}}, and [[TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot flat-out wasting the potential of your premise.]]
* PokemonSpeak: Points out Nyu's tendency to do this in ''Manga/ElfenLied''.
* PrecisionFStrike: Happens in the beginning review of ''Anime/FullmetalAlchemist'' when JesuOtaku is talking to people over him monitor about what anime to review for his 50th review. Sage shows up.
-->'''Sage''': Hi there.
-->'''Jesu''': ''FUCK!'' *changes channel quickly*
* PrettyFlyForAWhiteGuy: In the opening to ''Anime/SamuraiChamploo'' review and his first line of the ''Franchise/{{Digimon}}'' retrospective. The snarktitles are not impressed.
--> ''Aow! It's August!''
* ReadingsBlewUpTheScale: JO's "{{Metafiction}} meter" blows up at least twice during his review of ''Anime/DigimonTamers''.
* RealWomenNeverWearDresses: The ''Manga/{{Mahoromatic}}'' review starts with him playing a maid, before he gives it up and complains "I'm in a ''dress''. I'm wearing ''make-up''. I hate all of you."
* RunningGag:
** His gripes about Creator/{{GONZO}} and their varying production values.
** The silly voices he uses for characters in his playthrough of [[VideoGame/FireEmblemTellius Path of Radiance]].
** From hia livestream, [[VideoGame/FireEmblemTellius Boyd]] being blamed when something crashes or doesn't work properly on the stream, and the people in the chat shouting "NAIL!" whenever Soren, who has the voice of Super Kami Guru, appears. It has gotten to the point where JO tells them early on to get it out of their system.
* SayMyName: JO at the end of the ''Manga/KoiKaze'' review, upon realizing [[WebVideo/BennettTheSage who]] sent his ''Anime/MasterOfMartialHearts''.
-->JO: '''''SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE!!!!'''''
* SecretTestOfCharacter: The end of the Anime/HighschoolOfTheDead seems to imply that Sage was using this anime, and possibly the other horrible anime he suggested, to this effect.
* ShooOutTheClowns:
** JO forwent his usual "Snark Text" subtitles during his ''Anime/NowAndThenHereAndThere'' review for fear of damning his eternal soul by making fun of something so depressing.
** Except in one short instance: Lampshading the intentional MoodWhiplash (From the director of ''Manga/FruitsBasket'', everybody!).
* TheSmartGirl: For the Website/DesuDesBrigade.
* SomethingElseAlsoRises: In JO's review for ''Manga/{{Chobits}}'', he gave it X "Good Mornings" with appropriate gestures.
* {{Squee}}:
** The snarktitles don't pass the chance in the ''Manga/OuranHighSchoolHostClub'' review.
** He confused WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic by squeeing at part of the ''Franchise/{{Digimon}}'' movie.
--> '''JO:''' Sorry...I squeed.
* StupidSexyFlanders:
** From the ''Anime/CowboyBebop'' review, he has this reaction almost every time Faye Valentine's on screen:
--> "Seriously [[HaveIMentionedIAmHeterosexualToday I'm straight]] but [[EvenTheGirlsWantHer that girl]] is [[MsFanservice dead sexy]]."
** Elizabeth from ''Manga/{{Trigun}}''
--> "Wow. It's times like this I wish I could whistle. You could stop traffic with a body like that."
* TopTenList: Top X Lists, mostly. Top 20 Villains, Top 15 Dubbed Anime Themes, Top 15 Stupidest Izzyisms, Top 15 Nerd Jokes in It must have been our imagination.
* WallBang: Does this before reviewing ''Eiken''.
* WhamLine: From the end of "Top Ten ''Anime/SpaceDandy'' Episodes":
-->"I hope you all enjoyed this video. Because you just watched [[GrandFinale my last one]]."
* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: {{Invoked}}: When commenting on the scenes that didn't get edited out of the Creator/{{Toonami}} showing of ''Anime/OutlawStar'', he snarks "Creator/{{Toonami}}: Women abuse...for kids! :D"
* WhatTheHellHero: Calls out [[WebVideo/BrowsHeldHigh Kyle]]- who, it should be noted, was reviewing Melancholia and thus had already crossed the DespairEventHorizon and was in a HeroicBlueScreenOfDeath- when he points out how any crossovers with JO would mostly involve Kyle as the ButtMonkey because he doesn't like Anime as much as JO.
* WhoNamesTheirKidDude: Asked this via snarktitles in regards to ''LightNovel/{{Baccano}}''[='=]s Jacuzzi Splot. ("No really, WHAT were his parents on?")
* YourMakeupIsRunning: Manages to cause his mascara to run while crying over Tai's UnluckyChildhoodFriend status with Sora in the [[Franchise/{{Digimon}} Digimon: The Movie]] review, despite not wearing any to begin with.
* YourMom: In the snark text captions of his ''Anime/OutlawStar'' review, when comparing the plot structure to a round robin story-telling game:
-->"I went to the store and saw..."
-->"Your mom! OOH!"
-->"Come on, Brad, can we get through ONE ROUND!?"
-->"That's what your MOM said last night! OOH!"
