It's the year [[TwentyMinutesIntoTheFuture 2047]] and some fifteen years following the [[WorldWarIII Great Economic War]]. Most of the countries of Western Europe and North America have joined to form the [[OneWorldOrder World Union]] and society is at its [[MarySuetopia most perfect]]. [[FreeLoveFuture Sex is entertainment]], children are viewed as investments [[ParentalAbandonment raised in institutions]] (called Child Development Centres) by teachers, [[WeWillHavePerfectHealthInTheFuture disease]] and crime have been eliminated and [[{{Greed}} greed is good]].
You play Phoenix Wallis, a Peace Officer (read cop) in [[CrystalSpiresAndTogas Adrianopolis]], a city on the bordering [[WretchedHive Russia]] in the World Union. [[DaChief Captain Dagmar Morrison]] has assigned Phoenix and another Peace Officer named [[ProfessionalButtKisser Julio Roderigez]] to investigate the murder Vassyly Bogdanov, a crime that has not occured for fifteen years. While investgating this Phoeniz comes across [[LinkedListClueMethodology some rather strange clues involving butterflies]] that leads to [[spoiler:an ElaborateUndergroundBase where a supposed LaResistance known as the renovators is run by an [[TheOmniscientCouncilOfVagueness Omniscient Council of Vagueness]].]]
The political and economic system of the World Union is based on UsefulNotes/{{Objectivism}} and ''Literature/BraveNewWorld''.
''Culpa Innata'' was made by the Turkish company Momentum AS in 2007 and is more like a VisualNovel than an AdventureGame. [[{{Vaporware}} A sequel]] has been made, and was supposed to be released in 2008, but the financial crisis meant that the [[ScrewedByTheNetwork publisher didn't pay Momentum AS for the game]].
----
'''This game contains the following tropes:'''
* AllMenArePerverts - One of the few aversions. Bogdanov's willingness to have sex with AnythingThatMoves is actually seen as strange by most of the characters.
* AllThereInTheManual - The [[http://www.culpainnata.com/ website]].
* AllWomenAreLustful - Morrisen says at one point that it is women who sexually harass men.
* AllWomenLoveShoes
* AntiVillain - Is [[spoiler:Supreme Commander Mr. Hamilton]] one of these?
* AsYouKnow - There are a lot of these to explain the history of the world the game is set in and the social philosophies.
* BareYourMidriff - Phoenix's Peace Officer uniform.
* BrokenBird
* CasanovaWannabe - Pierre [=DeVille=], Bogdanov could be seen as this as well.
* CatapultNightmare - Three times. First time when Phoenix was remembering her [[StreetUrchin time on the streets]], second was after she discovers the [[spoiler:Renovators control room in the tunnels]] and the third time was when [[spoiler:she escaped from the [[ElevatorFailure crashing elevator]] in the mining camp that she was transported to by the Renovators.]]
* CommLinks - The Personal Assistant or PA, which is a video phone, a diary, a scanner and a map, there's also the hint that BigBrotherIsWatching. The PA is also where you save the game.
* {{Cutscene}} - In addition to converstaions, there's rendered cinematics that show nightmares and other non-interactive sections.
* DaChief - Dagmar Morrisen
* DarkAndTroubledPast - Phoenix's parents were killed in riots during the Great Economic War, she had to [[StreetUrchin survive on the streets]] until after the [[RedshirtArmy Union Army]] arrived to save the city from rebels when she was found by Amnesty International.
* DeathBySex
* DirtyOldMan - Bogdanov is said to be this, Michalov is this to Phoenix
* TheDitz - Alicia/Aleethia from The Thing Store
* DoesntLikeGuns - Not just Phoenix but (with the exception of the armed forces) the World Union in general. No Peace Officers carry a gun and Phoenix is disgusted with Pierre [=DeVille=]'s gun collection.
* DoubleThink: Converstaion with Lupin reveals that students in the immigration academy took the selfish/greed portion too literally, and avoided cooperation and sharing as was required by some academy assignments; hence less experienced people not understanding how things work. Overall, the union is based around greed and capitalism, yet it's the duty of individuals to contribute to an NGO (technically a limited form of altruism that is otherwise stigmatized).
* TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt - Shown in the FakeOutOpening.
* EmotionsVsStoicism
* EroticDream
* EverybodyHasLotsOfSex - Women in the World Union are expected to have multiple partners and (at least according to Sandra) it's fashionable to be promiscuous. Phoenix is seen to be rather prudish and old-fashioned as she says she wants to be with the right man.
* FakeOutOpening - The game begins with children listening to a lecture in a starry room, it's not until later you find out [[spoiler:that these people are actually the Renovators and are in hiding]].
* FreeLoveFuture
* GossipyHens - Phoenix and Sandra, it's pretty much all Sandra does.
* KissMeIAmVirtual - [[spoiler:What Bogdanov's device can do.]]
* HairpinLockpick - Phoenix [[SawItInAMovieOnce saw it once in an old age 2D movie]].
* InUniverseGameClock: This game uses event-based time advancement. As long as you don't travel between major locations, the time remains the same, and it only changes once you speak with someone or go to a certain place. However, it's sometimes inconsistent - if you arrive at the child care center at 12:01, speak with the receptionist to learn that prep-period is in 90 minutes, and make a short discussion with a teacher, the result is that the time jumps to 4:30 after the interrogation (not enough time to reach another location).
* LinkedListClueMethodology
* MacGyvering - A lot of the puzzles Phoenix solves are done by this, there's even a ShoutOut.
* [[spoiler:TheMafiya]]
* MeaningfulName - Subverted. Phoenix is aware that her name is a city in the US and a mythical bird but doesn't know what they mean. She is also told later about the constellation that shares her name.
* NGOSuperpower - {{NGO}}s were responsible for getting rid of the UN and all Union citizens have to belong to one.
* TheOmniscientCouncilOfVagueness
* OrWasItADream
* ParentalAbandonment - This is implied to happen to ''all children'' as while children are concieved in the normal way
* PerpSweating - Phoenix does this when she interviews the novices before they can become World Union citizens. The trick is, unless you are calm in the interrogation room you are unlikely to pass due to the whole Union stoicism thing.
* PowerTattoo - The forehead tattoo of the Arrivee.
* ProfessionalButtKisser - Julio Roderigez
* PyramidPower
* RaisedByGrandparents: Was the case for Vassyly Bogdanov when he was young. In addition to this being a clue to where to find something, Phoenix later discusses in gossip about how she doesn't understand why those biological grandparents were altruistic towards Bogdanov.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Dr Patel gives one of these if you follow the right dialogue options to fail his security interview, and Phoenix follows this up with a great ShutUpHannibal.
* RedHerring - [[spoiler:Pierre [=DeVille=]]]
* SequelHook
* {{Stripperiffic}} - Phoenix's nightclub outfit.
* TwentyMinutesIntoTheFuture
* {{Vaporware}} - Despite announcements of a sequel, there has been no word of a release.
* YouNeedToGetLaid - This is Sandra's constant advice to Phoenix.
