''[[https://www.pirate101.com/free_game Pirate101]]'' is a MassivelyMultiplayerOnlineRolePlayingGame from the makers of ''{{Wizard101}}''.

During the colonization of the Spiral tensions with Polaris reach their breaking point and [[GreatOffscreenWar a war between the great naval powers of the spiral]]. As the war went on some mercenaries began to [[OnlyInItForTheMoney switch allegiances based on who offered the greatest profit]], some eventually [[WildCard swore off all allegiance and pillaged all ships they saw.]] Thus the first {{Pirate}}s were born.

Now the war has ended and all the great navies are broken and licking their wounds allowing pirates to to pillage and plunder to their heart's desire. This golden age of piracy began and the pirate's even changed the thieves den of Skull Island into a republic.

However, the Marleybone's Royal Navy is beginning to regroup and the Valencian navy of clockworks is growing. The clockwork's leader Commander Kane has made it his personally duty to hunt down and bring piracy to an end and claim the entire Spiral under their flag. While rumors of pieces of a treasure map to an entire island made of gold have brought may young greenhorns hoist the colors while stirring older pirates from their [[RetiredBadAss retirement]] and even some from their "[[HesJustHiding graves]]" and even a couple from their [[BackFromTheDead actual graves]].

It takes place in the same setting and about the same time as ''Wizard101'' but the two games' stories do not interact. Pirates are a superstitious lot and thus avoid wizards (the witchdoctor class uses a completely different type of magic than wizards) Most of the Spiral believes the affairs of wizards are strange, mysterious, and best ignored. While wizards are reclusive and avoid getting involved in non-magical affairs.

----
!! ''Pirate 101'' provides examples of:

* AbsurdlySpaciousSewer: These are very common. The player's companions even begin to complain about the "wondrous" places the player takes them.
** There's even a shanty town in the sewers of the isle of dogs.
* AccidentalMurder: [[spoiler: Ratbeard]] accidentally kills his crew when the knockout drops he thought he had were replaced with poison.
-->[[spoiler: Ratbeard]]: Poisoned? I never poisoned ye! I just meant to put ye to sleep! Not...well..."[[DeadlyEuphemism to put you to sleep]]".
* {{Adorkable}}: [[TheEngineer Gracie]] [[ActionGirl Conrad]] has shades of this and is sort of YMMV. However, anyone who has Milo Graytail on their crew knows that he has this in SPADES.
* AffectionateParody: As Wizard101 was at least partially inspired by Franchise/HarryPotter, Pirate101 is partially inspired by PiratesOfTheCaribbean.
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: [[spoiler: Ratbeard]] accidentally killed his crew when someone had switched out the Knockout Drops with Poison. Upon finding out it was Captain Fowl to blame in his second promotion, he will say, "Fowl! He took me leg, killed me father, burned me house, an' stole me parrot."
* BadassCrew: Your crew eventually evolves into this over the course of game,especially after their promotions when they TakeALevelInBadass.
* BearsAreBadNews: One of the species from Grizzleheim. However, they have tried to remain neutral in the wars.
* BigBad: Kane, the first and leader of the clockworks.
* BornLucky / BornUnlucky: Boochbeard has almost [[Literature/{{Discworld}} Rincewind]] type luck since he is almost always thwarted in his plans but he always escapes to try again another day. He also has way of always being present when important events happen.
* ChainLightning: A witchdoctors get this ability that after it strikes has a 75% chance of jumping to another random enemy dealing full damage unless it kills.
* ChessWithDeath: [[spoiler: Captain Blood]] became immortal by challenging Death to a poker game and Death accepted. Death has a gambling problem. The twist is Death has the winning hand, but when he played his hand first [[spoiler: Blood]] left to go to the bathroom and never returned. Since the game is technically still going on he can't be killed.
* ClockPunk: Valencia's armada is manned by an army of clockworks. [[http://www.pirate101central.com/wiki/images/8/8b/%28Creature%29_Optimus_Rubeus.png They are incredibly beautifully built.]]
* ConvenientlyAnOrphan: The player character.
* ConvenientQuesting: Unless you've been given a quest that's part of the main story line on the other side of a blockade, you can't get past it.
** Painfully averted with one quest that requires the player to sail from Aquila to Subata in Mooshu, back to Aquila, and then back to Subata, then back to Aquila one last time. Did I forget to mention that these worlds are also nearly at the opposite ends of the world at the time of this mission's release?
* ConservationOfNinjutsu: In special battles if the enemy outnumber the player by more than one, the enemies are usually significantly lower level than normal enemies in the same area. Meanwhile bosses that go solo against the an entire team area extremely much tougher than anything else in the area.
** It's also discussed by El Toro while invading a ninja fortress.
* CoolAirship: Hand in hand with the SkyPirates theme.
* DraggedOffToHell / WingedSoulFliesOffAtDeath: The defeat animation for the cursed monquistadors does an impressive job of combining these two.
* DeadpanSnarker: Later in the game, Bonnie Anne becomes this to fill the role of [[TheStraightMan The straight man]] once Ratbeard, El Toro, and Catbeard are on your crew.
** If your parents died to mutiny, you will have Dead Mike on your crew. There is no need to say how much he fulfills this trope to the brim.
* DeadPersonConversation: Old Scratch's specialty. With either a corpse or a few keepsakes he can summon the ghost of someone to learn more information.
* DeathDealer: Standard attack of weasel gamblers/assassins. Also used by Bill Peacock.
* DeathFromAbove: The Privateer ability Gunnery. It can attack any 3x3 square on the board.
** Musketeers have several of these as well.
* DearNegativeReader: A well placed and polite one was added to the Port Royal mansion instance after several players called WhatTheHellHero on the player having to kidnap the Governor of Port Regal's daughter. The writers answered why the player was doing this but let Bonnie Anne serve as a voice for those that didn't like it.
* DefeatEqualsFriendship: Several of your crew members will begin as enemies.
* DefeatMeansPlayable: A couple of bosses that do not join the players crew can be unlocked in the crown shop. Depending on the player's class they may join the player for free.
** There are also three bosses that become available in the crown shop once they have been defeated multiple times.
* DiscOneNuke: The most common damage output of low-level swashbucklers is to use the ability [[SmokeOut Walk In Shadows,]] than use a typical sneak attack. At common high level Player Versus Player though, If you want to get this combo through, this time with enhanced versions of these skills, like Black Fog, and Assassin's strike, plus the increased criticals of shadowdance for good measure, you need to hope that the enemy [[TheMedic Privateer,]] [[GlassCannon Witchdoctor, or]] [[DemolitionsExpert Musketeer]] forgets to throw down their [[AreaOfEffect Area of Effect]] spells. [[OneHitKill It pays off when you do land it though.]] Other than that. When some low level swashbuckler thinks they can [[OneHitKill One-Shot]] Anyone, even max levels, The results are most likely [[CherryTapping Cherry Tapping,]] and if the enemy has a vengeance strike on him like Hawkules, This results in a [[OneHitKill One hit kill]] on the swashbuckler's part.
* ADogNamedDog: Usually played straight such as one of the possible crew mates is Lucky Jack Russel, an anthropomorphic Jack Russell Terrier. Subverted and discussed with Froggo Villa, he's actually a salamander.
** Also zig-zaged with El Toro, the current one is a bull, but his predecessor was a horse.
* DummiedOut: El Tiburon, the Storm Shark Companion, was suppose to became available in the crown shop after defeating him but once the game went live, the badge that served the flag that added him to the crown shop was removed.
** This has become a subverted trope for those that had defeated him after the third main update, for them he is now the same as in the beta. For those that had completed the mission he is still inaccessible but plans to make him accessible to all in in motion. (Yes, this means currently we have the an actual case of a partially subverted trope.)
* EverythingIsBetterWithMonkeys: Monquistans
* EverythingIsBetterWithPenguins: Polarians are a bunch of French penguins. They are more dangerous than they sound. Had Valencia not created the clockworks, Napoleguin would have conquered the entire spiral.
* EverythingsBetterWithPlatypi: The Water Moles are a tribal pirate faction. There are two groups the Nui, friendly traders, and the Waponi a warlike tribe that are xenophobic to the point of hating even the Nui.
* {{Expy}}: Subverted with Captain Avery being one for Merle Ambrose. While they could pass as brothers, Avery quickly shows he's not above using ExactWords to cheat the player.
** [[SideQuest Side Quest]] companion Ridolfo Capoferro looks [[CaptainErsatz awfully]] like Diego The Duelmaster from ''{{Wizard101}}'' without the [[BadassBeard Beard]]
* FlunkyBoss: Quite a few of these tend to appear through the course of the game. Early on, there's [[ShoutOut Fin]] [[VinDiesel Dorsal]] who combines this with [[DamageSpongeBoss Damage Sponge Boss.]] Later, there's Commander Davis, who is also a [[DamageSpongeBoss Damage Sponge]] and has three waves of mooks accompanying him, and then there's [[ThatOneBoss Scylla.]] It's a ship battle that if you don't have your friends disabling the spawns that appear on the ship fighting it, you will be forced against a questionable amount of quote unquote, [[DemonicSpider "Mooks"]] that get free attacks anytime anyone dodges, can take a lot of punishment due to being [[MightyGlacier buccaneers]], love to rush down foes due to the sheer amount of them, and have [[NightmareFace unbelievably creepy faces]] [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking for a kids game.]]
* FragileSpeedster: The Swashbuckler class
* GiantMecha: The player pilots one to fight a Stormzilla.
* GenreBlind: Avery just doesn't seem to catch on that Fin is a greedy backstabbing traitor, despite being robbed by him multiple times.
** The player also becomes this in a couple of side missions such as when they unknowingly rob a bank.
* GenreSavvy: Several companions are quick to comment when they don't trust someone. Overall, it's best to be cautious when dealing with pirates.
* GlassCannon: Witchdoctors have some of the hardest hitting attacks, but they have the least amount of health and no natural defense to physical attacks.
* GreatOffscreenWar: The backstory for the origins of the pirates.
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler: Ratbeard]] does one when you save him after his new allies betray him.
** Quite a few others including Old Scratch.
* HerdHittingAttack: While most classes have a couple of special attacks that can strike multiple targets, witchdoctors have many attacks that can hit multiple enemies.
* HollywoodVoodoo: The Witchdoctor class
* IHaveManyNames: Boochbeard has collected quite a few in his long career. This being Boochbeard, none are particularly BadAss.
* KidWithTheLeash: The player takes hold of a leash uses it to control [[spoiler: the Monkey King]]. The one on the leash has made it clear that he does not like it and had made two attempts on the player's life before being collared
* KidWithTheRemoteControl: When the player spares Old Scratch, Old Scratch becomes very loyal to the player and with the players help he even eventually banishes his former spirit master, the evil Dark Crawler.
* LetsYouAndHimFight: The using advise from Catbeard, player starts a war between Marleybone and the Armada in order to weaken Fort Eleana's defenses enough to sneak in and free some of it's prisoners.
* LifeDrain: Witchdoctor's Jobu attacks drain enemies health and restore a portion of the damage to the caster's health.
* TheMafia: Frogfather's Syndicate is the most powerful group of smugglers in the spiral.
* MalevolentMaskedMen: The Armada all wear Venetian style masks. Of course, there's nothing but machinery underneath.
* TheManBehindTheMan: Mr. Gandry is rumored to be behind Boochbeard's operations.
* MechanicalLifeforms: The Clockworks are extremely advanced sapient machines. However, they are not actually alive. They are but puppets with a facsimile of life. Hollow men, run on gears and wires; heartless, soulless, and ruthless. They do not tire. They do not sleep. They do not stop. Ever.[[note]]But they breaks down if you hits 'em hard enough.[[/note]]
* MightyGlacier: The Buccaneer class
* MonsterClown: Phule, one of the member's of Kane's court. Despite being a machine he has a SplitPersonality that corresponds with which side of his mask the camera is facing. The white smile has a certain level of respect and seems to be entertained by how well you're succeeding, while the black frown just wants you dead.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Many of the companions reactions to seeing [[spoiler: Marleybone's skies filled with debris from Marleybonian and Armada ships and the entire skyway having become a war zone as a result of the war the player started.]]
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Captain Blood, one of the most evil pirates to ever exist. Fortunately, they claim he met his end a few years ago. [[spoiler: [[HesJustHiding yeah right]]]]
* TheNapoleon: Napoleguin, the ultimate [[TheChessMaster chess master]]. [[SmugSnake Or so he'd have you believe.]]
* NotSoSafeHarbor: Skull Island is suppose to be type 1, but as this is supposed to be a family game it is fairly safe.
* NotThisOneThatOne: After finishing the first few missions, the player is granted their very own ship from [[MagnificentBastard Avery's]] private stock. As such, the private dock the player is directed to has a massive, golden, magnificent CoolShip. This is, of course, promptly moved aside to reveal the player's [[TheAllegedCar raft]].
* OhCrap: Whenever a character makes a critical hit, the person on the receiving end pulls one of these.
* OurWormholesAreDifferent: The Stormgates are giant whirlpool like [[BuffySpeak swirly things]] that enable ships to travel between the worlds of the spiral.
* ThePasswordIsAlwaysSwordfish: Subverted, The player is first told that the password to see Frogfather is "swordfish", the real pasword is "ribbet". This seems like a stupid idea for a [[TheMafia mafia]] of [[PettingZooPeople anthropomorphic frogs]] to choose for a password, but because it's so silly nobody has ever guessed it.
* PettingZooPeople: As with Wizard101, they make up a large potion of the Spiral's population.
* {{Precursors}}: The Aztecosaurs, a race so old they lived on the first world alongside the titans before it was destroyed. Their empire had dwindled to only Azteca since the first world was shattered. Unfortunately, Azteca was destroyed when [[ColonyDrop a comet collided with it]] leaving only their ruins on different worlds of the spiral. [[spoiler: Azteca is still around and it's denizens are still alive as well, at least at the moment....]]
** The Celestians and citizens of El Dorado were two extremely powerful civilizations that developed magic and technology beyond anything the rest of the spiral has. El Dorado had such power that when it's people died off the Celestians used their power to make it's Stormgate appear and vanish in a way that was almost impossible to use to prevent anyone from accessing El Dorado and it's magic. Afterwards the [[ChaoticNeutral Storm Lord]] sank their civilization when they asked him for help in a war. It's rumored that there are powers in El Dorado that could destroy the spiral if awakened.
* PreviouslyOn: Boochbeard and the player's companions remind the player what they were doing when they log in if it had been a while since the last time the player logged in.
* ProudWarriorRace: The Amber Horde.
* PuzzleBoss: Some fights require facing the boss with a different tactic than just attack everything. Either the player must compete additional objectives to win or at least make the boss vulnerable.
** The most infamous fight is the GiantMecha fight with Stormzilla. In a plain hand to hand fight Stormzilla will win because it will have more health than the player, gets two to three attacks per turn compared to the player's one and if the player doesn't destroy the eggs quickly minions will join it. The player has to learn to use the Mecha's abilities and how to use the battlefield to win.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: Your entire crew is essentially this. Crews can contain members ranging from a ProudWarriorRaceGuy, BloodKnight, DumbMuscle, AntiHero, LoveableRogue, to TheEngineer,the list goes on.You and rest of your crew are up against an army of MechanicalLifeforms and everything else that's trying to get to El Dorado
* RetiredBadAss: Captain Horace Avery, the most successful pirate in history. He's forsaken the sail and is now the Steward of Skull Island after he won it in a bet from the previous governor.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Some of the pets are this without a doubt. Special mentions include: Orchid/Cutie Chameleons, Armadillo Verde, and White-Tailed Jackalope. (For Easter, There were variations on the Armadillo and Jackalope called the Marshmadillow, which is the armadillo Verde with the design of a marshmallow peep, and Chocolopes. Jackalopes that are chocolate bunny look-alikes. Putting a whole new meaning to the term [[TastesLikeDiabetes "Tastes like diabetes.")]]
* SceneryPorn: Kingsisle has vastly improved their graphics from when {{Wizard101}} was first released. The whole purpose of Catbeard's Lair is to show off just what Kingsisle can do.
* SelfDeprecation: Kingsisle makes a reference to the poor design choice of making most of the areas in Marleybone for {{Wizard101}} take place on similar looking rooftops by Ratbeard saying that the sewers were more appealing.
* SealedEvilInACan: El Toro accidentally creates one when he buries [[spoiler: Captain Blood]]. At the time he didn't know that his opponent had was [[BuriedAlive still alive]]. Judging by the broken clockworks surrounding the dug up grave, when the Armada tries to dig up his corpse to see if he had a key buried with him they got one hell of a surprise.
* ShamuFu: One Catbeard's critical attacks is to use the pickled herring he carries.
* ShatteredWorld: This takes place in the same Spiral as Wizard 101 made of a bunch islands that are the remaining pieces of the first world after it was shattered by the war between the dragons, ice giants, and tritons and stitched together in the spiral shape by the grandfather tree.
* ShedTheFamilyName: Bonnie Anne abandoned her last name, Fox, when she left Marleybone in an attempt to distance herself from the members of here family, most infamously Guy Fox, that were known Radicals and anarchists that were attempting to secure Albion freedom by violence and destruction.
* ShoutOut: Similar to {{Wizard101}} to may to list. Don't even try to start one.
* SmokeOut: Swashbucklers have abilities that creates a cloud of smoke that let them be come invisible for a few turns and doubling the damage of any attack performed while invisible
* SquishyWizard: The Witchdoctor class has the lowest base health and does not naturally learn to wear armor. Partially averted in that they can learn to wear light armor for the cost of a SkillPoint.[[note]]Originally the plan was for witchdoctors to never learn how to wear any armor.[[/note]]
* SuicideMission: Referred to literally by Ratbeard, when the player tries to join the Marleybonian Navy in order to use some emergency laws to help a character get out of jail, the command sends the player on one in an attempt to stop an Armada superweapon. This is done not out of malice but a combination of desperation and normality. Suicide missions are apparently relatively common practice, and at least one of command has been on multiple suicide missions. The command truly expected to see the player survive.
* TangledFamilyTree: Perhaps one of the most massive cases of this, '''all''' of Monquista is at least a third cousin of some former king. Their marriages are so twisted and tangled that the family trees look like cobwebs made by drunken spiders.
* TookALevelInBadass: Your Companions do this when you promote them.
* TurnedAgainstTheirMasters: The clockworks [[GoneHorriblyRight have become the most powerful navy in the spiral and are increasing the power of Valencia]] but have enslaved the people of Valencia and are destroying entire floating islands, and not always removing all it's inhabitants before they do so, to create [[DoomsdayDevice The Machine]].
* SkyPirate: Since there aren't many seas on the spiral, this is the main way to travel.
* TheWeirdWest: Cool Ranch, Considering that the western outlaws could be considered a Western version of pirates. This is a bit of FridgeBrilliance.
* UriahGambit: Discussed as a likely outcome of a character that would have been sentenced to death instead being forced to join player's crew and help fight the war instead. The judge liked the idea and agreed.
* VillainExitStageLeft: Deacon pulls this off in the tutorial after injuring Boochbeard. Later on Ratbeard does this as well.
* WelcomeBackTraitor: Ratbeard betrays the crew the player joins in search of Gunn's treasure. [[spoiler: When the player later saves his sorry hide he begs for forgiveness and ask to join the player's crew. One member of the player's crew makes an objection but goes on to accept Ratbeard as a fellow crew mate.]]
** Also Avery apparently has this problem even worse. Even after Fin stole from him (twice if the player does a specific sidequest) he still kept him around long enough for Fin to steal from him again. [[DefeatMeansPlayable After this the player can become this as well by paying Fin to join your crew]] [[BribingYourWayToVictory with crowns]].
* WildCard: The Monquistans are quick to change alliances since they are very easily offended. Boochbeard's second in command, Mr. Gandry, literally served in three different navies before becoming a pirate.
* WhamLine:
--> '''Ratbeard:''' Catbeard thought Marleybone'd make short work of the clockworks did he? Looks t'me like Captain Kitty has much to answer for!
--> '''Bonnie Anne:''' [[spoiler: He had help.]]
* WhipItGood: El Toro uses one for both attacking to swing over obstacles. [[BeyondTheImpossible He can even latch onto thin air with it.]]
* YouAllMeetInACell: The player starts off as a captive of the Valencian Clockworks but is rescued by Boochbeard and Mr. Gandry.
* YouDoNOTWantToKnow: In the Moomori Mansion instance, your first Companion, from Mooshu, volunteers to be the one to deface the walls. After Ratbeard asks what they say, your Companion refuses to translate. This trope is voiced literally by Subodai, the Companion given to Swashbucklers.
* YouKilledMyFather: A member of [[BigBad Kane's]] Court and Grand Marshal of the Armada, Rooke gives us a rare case of the villain saying this after the player [[spoiler: kills his "brother", Deacon]].
