''War of the Monsters'' (known as Kaiju Daigekisen in Japan) is a 3D FightingGame for the PlayStation2, made by Incognito Entertainment (of ''TwistedMetal'' fame) and re-released on the PlaystationNetwork.

The game is set in the aftermath of an alien invasion of Earth where their [[GreenRocks hazardous fuels]] have spawned giant monsters that battle one another in city environments. The game is presented in the style of a 1950's science fiction and monster movie, making {{homage}}s to films in those genres.

The monsters you can play are:
* [[EverythingsBetterWithMonkeys Congar]] - [[KingKong A giant gorilla.]]
* [[Franchise/{{Godzilla}} Togera]] - A huge reptile.
* [[BigCreepyCrawlies Preytor]] - A giant praying mantis.
* [[RealRobot Robo-47]] - A military combat robot.
* [[LivingStatue Agamo]] - A tiki-style stone behemoth.
* [[MagmaMan Magmo]] - A four-armed magma monster.
* [[SuperRobot Ultra V]] - A Japanese fighting robot.
* [[ShockAndAwe Kineticlops]] - An electric cyclops.
* [[StarfishAliens Zorgulon]] - A huge alien.
* [[InstantAwesomeJustAddDragons Raptros]] - A dragon.

----
!!This game provides examples of:

* AffectionateParody: Of [[TheFifties Fifties]] sci-fi and {{B Movie}}s, as well as {{Kaiju}} movies.
* AliensAndMonsters
* [[AnIcePerson An Ice Ape]]: Congar's fourth skin is effectively him made of ice.
* AppliedPhlebotinum: The alien fuel that gives birth to most of the game's monsters.
* {{Area51}}: Rosdale Canyon.
* ArtificialBrilliance: Used in the most annoying way possible as the AI turns out to pretty much be total coward. The second a fight stops going their way a CPU run, hide and grab at every single health power-up in the arena. The issue is only compounded by the AI's tendency to GangUpOnTheHuman leading to times injured monsters will run off and heal themselves while non-wounded monsters will swarm around you and kick the shit out of you.
* AttackOfThe50FootWhatever: Duh.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Cerebulon. [[spoiler: After defeating his first two mecha-based forms, you might think that battling his physical form would be easier.]] You would be wrong. He has blindingly fast melee attacks, so much so that most characters can't get an attack in once his combo starts. You will then be thrown across the map, missing a large portion of your health.
* BehemothBattle: It's a FightingGame where you can play as different kinds of {{Kaiju}}.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: Togera has spiked blades that extend from the back of his wrists during punch attacks. Robo-47 occasionaly has blades replace his hands for melee attacks.
* BodyHorror: Kineticlops is [[spoiler:a security guard who was hit by lightning after he was contaminated with alien fuel, mutating him into an eye suspended in lighting]].
* BoringButPractical: Your monster regenerates attack energy most effectively by using melee weapons.
** To go into detail about Agamo, his special attack it to rip his head off and use it as a weapon. Most levels are typically littered with weapons a minute into a fight, so why use him? As mentioned earlier weapons restore energy, so odds are you'll ''always'' have a better weapon than what's lying around. In addition, this weapon can be made to explode on command, either when your opponent is dumb enough to pick it up after a throw or (with a bit of timing,) after it bounces off of them from a throw.
* BreathWeapon: Togera, Congar, Preytor, Magmo and Raptros' attacks.
* CaptainErsatz: Quite a lot.
** Togera is Franchise/{{Godzilla}}.
** Congar is Film/KingKong.
** Ultra V is MazingerZ. An alternate skin resembles [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion Eva Unit-01]].
** Preytor is TheDeadlyMantis. An alternate skin is ''Film/{{THEM}}!''
** Agamo is [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daimajin Daimajin]].
** Raptros is [[Franchise/{{Godzilla}} Rodan crossed with King Ghidorah]].
** This is done with the arenas, too:
*** Baytown (and Mini Baytown) = San Francisco
*** Capitol = Washington, D.C.
*** Club Caldera = Honolulu
*** Gambler's Gulch = Las Vegas
*** Midtown Park = New York
*** Tsunopolis = Tokyo
* CompetitiveBalance: Played with:
** Agamo is the StoneWall;
** Congar is the JackOfAllStats, bordering the LightningBruiser;
** Kineticlops is the FragileSpeedster;
** Magmo is between the StoneWall and the MightyGlacier;
** Preytor is the FragileSpeedster;
** Raptros is between the FragileSpeedster and the GlassCannon;
** Robo-47 is between the JackOfAllStats and the GlassCannon;
** Togera is the MightyGlacier, bordering the LightningBruiser;
** Ultra V is between the JackOfAllStats and the FragileSpeedster;
** Zorgulon is the GlassCannon.
* CycleOfHurting: Happens a lot in Adventure Mode because of GangUpOnTheHuman. Get impaled, then get thrown, then get hit in the face with a gas tanker as you try to stand back up... All the while your health is getting lower and you're getting kicked further away from any debris or powerups you could use to turn the tide.
* DeathByAThousandCuts: Robo-47 and Ultra-V's projectile attacks. Also, the military in adventure mode.
* DemBones: Raptros' 4th skin, making him a {{Dracolich}}.
* DeflectorShields: Cerebulon has this for its first form.
* DistaffCounterpart: One of Ultra V's bonus skins is Ultra VI, a female verson of the giant mecha.
* DropTheHammer: Robo-47 will often tranform his hands into different weapons to attack, including a hammer.
* EarthquakesCauseFissures: The earthquake that can be triggered in Baytown does this.
* EnergyBeings: Kineticlops.
* ExplosionPropulsion: Try throwing a tanker truck at an enemy, and watch them go sailing away into the air.
* FacelessEye: Kineticlops.
* FanficFuel: Beating the game with Raptros or Zorgulon unlocks a Making Of Video, rather than an Origin Movie. Some fans have has great fun speculating their origins.
* {{Flight}}: Raptros and Preytor are both the only monsters capable of maintaining flight, but Raptros can stay in the air much longer (and fly more smoothly) than Preytor.
* FlunkyBoss: In the first battle against Robo-47, it sends an entire army at you.
* GangUpOnTheHuman: Good lord, this game loves this trope. Even if the cinematic shows you jumping into a fight between two other monsters, they will focus all their attacks on you. This generally takes the form of almost finishing 1 monster off, only to be stunned/impaled by the other while the first one runs for health. Even in "Free-For-All," expect the enemy to gang up on you, even if one of them could die in the next hit (which could win them the match in some cases). They'd rather fight you than win.
* GiantWallOfWateryDoom: Triggerable in Tsunopolis.
* GreenRocks: The alien fuel. Bonus points for it having a SicklyGreenGlow.
* GuestFighter: [[TwistedMetal Sweet Tooth]] is unlocked as an alternate costume for Agamo if you have a Twisted Metal Black save file on your memory card.
* HelicopterFlyswatter: Monsters can swat, shoot, throw objects at, or even simply run into helicopters to destroy them.
* HerdHittingAttack: Every monster's close range special attack.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: The first stage of the first boss has you [[spoiler: throw his own explosives back at him.]] Cerebulon counts too, as [[spoiler: You fight his second form by... throwing pieces of his first form at him.]]
* HulaAndLuaus: Magmo's level.
* HumongousMecha: Ultra V and Robo-47, as well as various alternate skins. The first and final boss as well (though in the case of the latter, only it's first two forms).
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Pipes and radio towers are used for this.
* ImprovisedWeapon: Damn near everything. If you can pick it up, you can use it to put the hurt on your enemies. If you can't pick it up, you can probably smash it and use the pieces to put the hurt on your enemies. Alternatively, throw your enemies at it.
* InASingleBound
* InstantAwesomeJustAddMecha: In the story mode, the military attacks Preytor and the player's monster with their own, cyborg Congar.
** In fact, most of the (living) monsters have "mecha" variations amongst their alternate skins, except for Kineticlops, Raptros and Zorgulon.
* InstantDeathRadius: Cerebulon's second form invokes this ''hard''. His only attack is an unblockable red lightning cannon with rather short range. [[OhCrap Did we mention he's a]] SuperPersistentPredator [[ThatOneBoss with one of the fastest running speeds in the game?]]
* {{Kaiju}}
* KatanasAreJustBetter / LaserBlade: Ultra V uses a [[ImpossiblyCoolWeapon laser katana]] for its close range finisher.
* LosingYourHead: Agamo's long-range special attack.
** Kineticlops' eye is used to the same effect during one of his victory poses.
* MagmaMan: Magmo.
* MakeMeWannaShout: Congar's attacks.
* ManEatingPlant: The venus flytrap-like boss on Atomic Island.
* MonumentalDamage: The Capitol level.
** The Eiffel Tower and the Great Pyramid during the intro movie.
* OldSaveBonus: Having TwistedMetal Black unlocks Agamo's 4th skin: Mecha-Sweet Tooth.
* PersonalSpaceInvader: Preytor's long-range special attack. To clarify, it's a giant parasite. That latches onto your face.
* PlayingWithFire: Raptros' and Magmo's attacks.
* PunchedAcrossTheRoom: All the time. Some attacks are specifically designed to launch enemies.
* RentAZilla: Togera.
* RewardingVandalism: A good way to rebuild your energy bar or find health, and frees up debris to hit your enemies with. It also gives points that can be used for unlockable skins and arenas.
* SpikesOfDoom: Togera.
* SpinAttack: The move of choice for the first boss in one-player mode.
* SpiritualSuccessor: Not an intentional one, but this game pretty much plays like an updated version of ''VideoGame/KingOfTheMonsters''.
* StartOfDarkness: Completing the game reveals your chosen monster's origin.
* StuffBlowingUp
* SquashedFlat: Toppling a skyscraper onto an opponent (or yourself) results in a OneHitKill.
* TanksForNothing: Played pretty straight. They are destroyed by the dozen in cutscenes, and deal next to no damage in-game. The missile trucks, on the other hand...
* TheComputerIsACheatingBastard: The AI not only knows exactly where all the health pickups are on the map, but also knows ''when'' they appear.
* TheTokyoFireball: Tsunopolis.
* TheresNoBInMovie: The 'movie posters' for each level are generally like this.
* TooDumbToLive: The scientist that inadvertently creates Preytor.
* TripodTerror: Cerebulon, the final boss of the one-player mode.
* VictoryPose: Whenever you win a round in a story mode, or in the 'first-to-X-kills' challenges.
* VisibleInvisibility: Of the shimmering/vaguely distorted type, from power-ups. It doesn't work on the AI.
* VivaLasVegas: Gambler's Gulch.
* YouNukeEm: Robo-47 launches a tactical nuke as his long-range special. [[CaptainObvious It hurts.]]
* YourHeadAsplode: [[spoiler: Cerebulon, after you defeat his last form.]] Technically, Agamo as well, as part of his long-range special (the exploding head has already been replaced though).
