A [[FreewareGames freeware game]] released on June 26th, 2009, '''''Vanguard Princess''''' is an indie FightingGame created by former {{Capcom}} employee Sugeno Tomoaki (a.k.a. Suge9) with Enterbrain's Fighter Maker 2nd. While the game's entire cast are female, it does not play like a button-masher like most all-girl fighting games, nor is its gameplay is derived from games such as the ''VideoGame/GuiltyGear'' series.

Gameplay-wise, the game is more akin to games such as ''VideoGame/StreetFighterII''. However, there is something that makes this fighting game stand out from the rest: It's a "[[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin 2-on-2 fighting game]]". Before each match, players can chose one of four support characters to help assist them in battle, and they key to this game is experiment with different support characters to utilize characters' abilities effectively. Alone, each of the main characters face chaining limitation; but with the aid of their partners, they can they can increase their chaining potential and perform effective combos.

More about the game (and how to run it on your computer) can be found [[http://www.indiegames.com/blog/2009/07/freeware_game_pick_vanguard_pr.html here]]. A complete wiki is available [[http://wiki.mizuumi.net/w/Vanguard_Princess here]].

It was announced that [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g16kr_ZBkUA an English localization]] of the game has been licensed by [=eigoMANGA=], a digital manga-publishing company, in 2011. The English version of the game was released in late 2012 via [=GamersGate=] and Amazon Downloads for $10. The XboxLiveArcade and {{PlayStation Network}} release, and availability on other digital distribution services has still yet to be announced, but it was given a release on [[http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=187111395 Steam Greenlight.]]

!!This game features trope examples of:
* OneHundredAndEight: Yui is the 107th generation of her family.
* ACupAngst: Parodied with Yui feeling flat compared to Rikako in [[http://suge9.blog58.fc2.com/blog-entry-167.html this]] [[YonKoma 4koma]] by Suge9.
* AbsoluteCleavage: Luna, Hilda and Juliet. A little disturbing with the latter, since [[TokenMiniMoe she doesn't look older than twelve]].
* ArcherArchetype: Ayane.
* AmbidextrousSprite: Ayane's eyepatch is naturally on the left side of her eyes, yet it can magically swap to the other.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: Juliet and Kaya.
* [[AmnesiacHero Amnesiac Heroine]]: Kaede.
* AncestralWeapon, {{BFS}}: Yui's sword, Sakuya.
* AssistCharacter: The gameplay is built with them in mind.
* AssKicksYou: Two of Natalia's attacks give the player quite a view given how little she wears down there.
* BarbieDollAnatomy: During the TransformationSequence of Kurumi's Union Art with her assist.
* BareYourMidriff: Luna, Eri, Juliet, and Hilda.
* BeamSpam: Some of Kurumi's Union Arts qualify as this, depending on her assist.
** Haruka's Crimson line [[LimitBreak Liberty Art]] has you manually input buttons presses to spam her beam attack.
* BerserkButton: Lilith really hates it when people don't believe her when she says that she's a demon and the daughter of Satan.
* {{BFG}}: Luna has a special move where she uses one.
* BountyHunter: Luna.
* CombatStilettos: Luna and Kaede wears these. Especially Kaede, who has several flying and diving kick moves where she hits an opponent high-heel first.
* CoolSword: Saki's sword.
* CuteBruiser: Lilith. She's a GlacierWaif too, seeing as she's the [[MightyGlacier Zangief]] equivalent of the game. Kurumi, Eri, Eko, and Juliet also qualifies.
* DarkSkinnedBlonde: Juliet.
* DoesNotLikeShoes: [[spoiler:Loli-Hilda.]]
* DeclarationOfProtection:
** Yui does one towards Ayane in the latter's ending [[spoiler:after Ayane noticed that she's slowly being BroughtDownToNormal]].
** Haruka's ending reveals she promised [[spoiler:[[FinalBoss Hilda]]]] that she will be with her when they first met, prompting her to go on a quest to save her in the game.
** In Kurumi's ending, she makes one for [[spoiler:the sealed Hilda]] with Eri, saying that they will protect her from the Government if they come for her.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Kurumi's ending.
* DetachedSleeves: Kaede and Hilda.
* DownloadableContent: Steam version currently has two: A free uncensoring one and recently one that adds the (re-balanced) FinalBoss to the playable roster and some other updates. There's talk of a free netplay DLC in the works.
* DrivenToSuicide: Kaede's ending revealed that [[spoiler:Colonel Miokawa put a contract on herself so that her own daughter would kill her. She never forgave herself for causing her own daughter to lose her memories through the experiments she headed]].
* DualWielding:
** DualTonfas: Eri.
** GunsAkimbo: Luna.
* EpicFlail: Juliet's WeaponOfChoice.
* {{Expy}}: Luna is {{Stripperiffic}}, has long, ponytailed red hair, and uses guns and even pulls out a giant rifle for one of her specials. Yep, the resemblance to [[Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann Yoko]] is uncanny.
* EyepatchOfPower: Ayane.
* FamousAncestor: Lilith not just any demon, she's the daughter of Satan.
* ForeignFanservice: Natalia, a blond and big-breasted foreign soldier who doesn't wear much below.
* {{Gainaxing}}: Every girl that's a bust size higher than a [[UsefulNotes/{{Pettanko}} A-cup]].
* GirlishPigtails: Yui, Eri, Eko, and Juliet.
* GoingCommando: Luna, though she wears a patch to cover her unmentionables.
* GunKata: Luna.
* HairDecorations: Almost everyone in the game falls under this trope.
* HeirToTheDojo: Haruka was supposed to be this, but she left to become a sorceress. Her younger sister Yui takes her place instead.
* HighlyVisibleNinja: Kaede.
* IJustWantToBeSpecial: Unlike most characters, Ayane really loves the powers she received from the MassSuperEmpoweringEvent [[spoiler:and is heart-broken when she notices them disappearing in her ending]].
* ImprobableAimingSkills: Just how is Ayane able to launch a volley at that close a range anyway? Also, juggling with arrows.
* ImprobablyFemaleCast
* {{Joshikousei}}: Saki, Yui, and Rikako.
* KendoTeamCaptain: Saki. As per usual with this trope, she's shown to have several fans and sees herself as a rival to Yui, the HeirToTheDojo of the game.
* TheLastDance: Ayane is a variation. While she's not dying, she is losing her powers, and her Story Mode involves her going on one final mission and seeking one last match with Yui before she loses them completely.
* LethalJokeCharacter: At the first glance, Kurumi seems to be a JokeCharacter. Her normal attacks don't do a lot of damage and her health is low. However, she is the only one in the game who can cancel, and her normals can be chained. But her biggest advantage is that her support gauge fills very, very quickly, enabling her to do more stuff with the support characters. It doesn't hurt that her first super move, Unison Arts, does ridiculous amounts of damage AND restores some of her life. However, it requires both a full super gauge and a full support gauge.
* LimitBreak: The Liberty Arts.
* LittleMissBadass: Lilith.
* LonerTurnedFriend: [[spoiler:Hilda]] was this for Haruka, which is why she chose to stay with her in her ending.
* LukeIAmYourFather: Kaede is revealed to be [[spoiler:the daughter of Colonel Miokawa]] and had lost her memories after she volunteered to be a human experiment.
* MagicSkirt: Juliet, Shiera, and Kanae.
* MagicStaff: Haruka's staff.
* MasterSwordsman: Yui is said to be the best sword fighter in Japan, and Saki specifically seeks her out in her Story Mode to show that she can beat her at swordplay.
* {{Meganekko}}: Kaede.
* {{Miko}}: One of the stages have a bunch of them in the background.
* MsFanservice: While it's true that every woman in the game is one, [[http://i.imgur.com/M0hc7.png Luna]] is Ms. Fanservice ''[[UpToEleven among]]'' Ms. Fanservices (NSFW).
* MusclesAreMeaningless: All over the place.
* MultipleEndings: Depending on which character you use.
* MysteriousPast:
** Kurumi. [[spoiler:According to Lilith, she was once a demon queen named Frederica who was reborn into a human. Depending on how it went, it may be a DarkAndTroubledPast]].
** Kaede [[spoiler:turns out to be the daughter of Colonel Miokawa who had volunteered herself for human experimentation. However, something went wrong during the process and she lost her memories]].
* NamedWeapons: Yui's sword, Sakuya.
* NinjaMaid: Juliet.
* NoArcInArchery: Possibly [[JustifiedTrope justified]] because Ayane isn't really shooting from far away but at that distance, [[RuleOfCool why bother to use a bow anyway]]?
* {{Patricide}}: Or to be more accurate, Matricide. In her ending, [[spoiler:Kaede learns that the person she was contracted to kill was her mother Colonel Miokawa, who had put a contract on herself to atone for her sins, which included accidentally brainwashing her own daughter when she experimented on her]].
* PantyFighter: Almost every girl has an attack that flashes their knickers (the exception to this rule is [[MagicSkirt Yui]], if you don't count her cut-in animation). Some of them don't even have to do that much.
** PantyShot: Practically the only girls who don't do this are the ones who either don't wear skirts or don't wear ''[[VaporWear panties]]''. Or Hilda Rize, because her panties are in plain view.
* PileBunker: Natalia's weapon of choice.
* ProfessionalKiller: Kaede, who works as an assassin.
* PromotedToPlayable: [[spoiler:Loli-Hilda in the English version is playable in the Story Mode. Unfortunately, she can't perform a Union Art with Kurumi.]]
** A recent DLC allows a balanced Adult Hilda to be playable.
* ProperTightsWithASkirt: Yui.
* RainOfArrows: One of Ayane's special moves.
* RapunzelHair: Several of the characters have ''very'' long hair.
* RazorSharpHand: Kaede, who primarily fights by slashing people with her hands.
* RedOniBlueOni: Kaya and Maya respectively.
* ReligiousBruiser: Natalia is explicitly called very religious in her bio. Naturally, she really hates the resident demon, Lilith.
* SchoolSwimsuit: The pool stage has several women and girls wearing these.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: Ayane wears one.
* SempaiKohai: Newcomer Rikako is apparently Saki's sempai.
* SpiritedCompetitor: Unlike most of the other characters, Saki joins the tournament to test her skills against various fighters, especially against Yui.
* ShesGotLegs: Oh lordy, does Luna got legs.
* SNKBoss: In the Japanese version, Hilda Rize is ridiculously overpowered, due to having a powerful assist and a projectile focus that no other characters can reliably counter or even defend against, but this is balanced by her AI being [[AIBreaker easily confused]]. However, the English version combines this with a PerfectPlayAI who can throw lightning-fast projectiles in a way that no human could possibly match, to the point where most characters can hardly get close to her without being pounded by one of her many specials, which she fires off one after another at lightning speed. She doesn't ''cheat'', per se, but with her moveset, she doesn't need to.
* StanceSystem: The core of Luna's gameplay.
* StatuesqueStunner: Hilda is considerably taller than some of the other characters when she's not [[PowerFloats floating]].
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Luna, Kaede, Natalia, Hilda and Kaya, and Juliet.
* StudentCouncilPresident: Saki's bio mentions that she will be one by the next term.
* SuperDeformed: The characters in the Characters Select menu.
* SuperMovePortraitAttack: Added in v1.08 for more [[{{Fanservice}} eye-candy]].
* SuperStrongChild: TokenMiniMoe Lilith is the resident grappler of the game, pulling off lots of wrestling type power move on characters that are at least twice her size. Being a demon explains her strength.
* TokenMiniMoe: Lilith and the assist characters. [[spoiler:A loli-fied Hilda can also be one too as an assist character.]]
* TogetherInDeath: [[spoiler:Haruka]]'s Ending has her choosing to stay with [[spoiler:Hilda]] when she AscendsToAHigherPlaneOfExistence so that they [[DisappearsIntoLight disappear]] together, because she doesn't want them to be separated ever again.
* [[TomboyandGirlyGirl Tomboy and Girly Girl]]: Eri and Kurumi, respectively, can arguably be this.
* [[TelephonePolearm Traffic Sign Polearm]]: Newcomer Rikako's weapon of choice happens to be a metal traffic sign that has a symbol for "no tanks".
* {{Vaporware}}: The next big update to the game, called Vanguard Princess ''Prime''. It's been years since Sugeno announced it.
* WrestlerInAllOfUs: Lilith can perform {{Suplex Finisher}}s and piledrivers, given that's she's this game's equivalent to [[VideoGame/StreetFighterII Zangief]].
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Played straight with Saki and Hilda's support character, Maya. Yui has green hair, Haruka and Lilith have teal hair, Kurumi and Hilda have beige hair, and Sierra has purple.
* ZettaiRyouiki: Kaede and Juliet wears thigh-highs. Natalia wears ThighHighBoots.
