Bahrain ('''''Arabic:''' البحرين‎ al-Baḥrayn; '''Persian:''' ‏بحرین‎ Bahreyn''), also known as the Kingdom of Bahrain ('''''Arabic:''' مملكة البحرين Mamlakat al-Baḥrayn'') is a country in the Middle East. It is an island country and the smallest of the Arab Gulf states. Like the other Gulf States, it is Muslim, Arabic-speaking, and dependent on oil revenues until recently.

It was ruled by UsefulNotes/{{Portugal}} for around 80 years (to be more precise, from 1521 to 1602).

What set it apart is that while the ruling king is Sunni, the majority are Shia. The fact that Iran once held the island in Parthian and Sassanid times, a claim that Islamic Iran held until recently didn't helped. It was once a British protectorate until 1971.

In 2011, it was wracked by protests by the Shia majority against the Sunni-dominated government. Many in the Bahraini government suspect Iranian involvement [in which Iran denied], but there are some Sunnis who were unhappy with the king as well. The fact that the protests are brutal is an understatement. Let's just leave it to that.

Bahrain is also home to the Bahraini Grand Prix stadium, a massive investment for so small a country.

->Red and white are common national colors in the Persian Gulf. In Bahrain's case, both colors are divided by a serrated line, whose five points symbolize the Five Pillars of Islam -- ''Shahadah'' (pledge of allegiance to God), ''Salat'' (five ritual prayers a day), ''Sawm'' (fasting during Ramadan, ninth month of the Islamic calendar), ''Zakat'' (charity to the poor) and ''Hajj'' (pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime).
