* ActorAllusion:
** Claudus, voiced by the original Lion-O himself Larry Kenney, tells Lion-O to let him show off what the Sword of Omens can do "in the proper hands." Jaga [[LampshadeHanging mentions]] that Claudus was much like Lion-O himself in his youth and Claudus gets to do the rallying cry one last time.
** Viragor is a monstrous bird who's violently over-protective of his home. This may seem familiar to ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender'' fans.
** The Soul Server is a mad scientist obsessed with bringing the dead back to life? Played by Creator/JeffreyCombs? [[Film/ReAnimator Why does that sound so familiar]]?
*** It's also not the first time Mr. Combs has played [[WesternAnimation/TransformersPrime a robot skilled with science]].
*** Nor his first time [[WesternAnimation/JusticeLeague dealing with other people's trash]].
* CrossDressingVoices: Snarf is male but is voiced by Creator/SatomiKoorogi, a Japanese voice actress.
* ExecutiveMeddling: The first season as plotted by the showrunners has twenty-six episodes. Cartoon Network decided to chop that in half into two thirteen-episode seasons.
* FandomNod: In "Between Brothers", Panthro shouts "I don't need a stinkin' nursemaid!" at Snarf, which is the role he played in the 1985 series.
* FanNickname: The Queen of Thundera's name is never mentioned or credited, but she was unofficially named Leona by the staff.
* HeyItsThatVoice:
** Creator/WillFriedle is Lion-O.
** Creator/MatthewMercer is Tygra and the Driller.
** Creator/KevinMichaelRichardson is Panthro.
** Emmanuelle Chriqui is Cheetara.
** Pamela Adlon is Pumyra.
** Creator/CoreyBurton is Jaga, Jorma, and others. He's using his [[Franchise/KingdomHearts Ansem The Wise]][=/=][[WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars Count Dooku]] voice, which also makes him sound very similar to ChristopherLee whom Corey was TheOtherDarrin to in the series.
** RobinAtkinDownes is Mumm-Ra.
*** He's also Captain Cornelius Tunar, [[ActorAllusion who seems to be channeling]] [[RatchetAndClank Captain Slag]].
** Creator/ClancyBrown is Grune.
** Larry Kenney ([[CastingGag the original]] [[MetaCasting voice of]] [[RemakeCameo Lion-O]]) is Claudus.
** Creator/DeeBradleyBaker is Slithe.
** Creator/SatomiKoorogi is Snarf.
** Creator/CreeSummer is Panthera.
** Creator/RobPaulsen is the leader of the Jackal-men and the leader of the Lizard-men in "Legacy".
** Atticus Shaffer from ''Series/TheMiddle'' is Young!Emrick.
** Creator/StephenRoot is The Drifter.
** Richard Chamberlain is Zigg.
** Hector Elizondo is Viragor.
** Creator/JimCummings is Caspin.
** JasonMarsden is Leo (when he's not possessed by Lion-O).
** Creator/JeffreyCombs is Soul Sever.
** Creator/JamesArnoldTaylor is Khamai.
** JulietLandau is the Queen.
** FredTatasciore is Dobo.
** HyndenWalch is Jenyo.
** Miguel Ferrer ([[Disney/{{Mulan}} Shan Yu]], [[WesternAnimation/TheSpectacularSpiderMan Silvermane]]) is the Duelist.
* IKnewIt: The [[spoiler: death of Lion-O's mother in childbirth]] was one of the major fan theories from the very beginning.
** Several fans settled on the name "Leona" for the Queen of Thundera before Dan Norton confirmed they crew called her that too.
** Almost ''immediately'' after Panthro [[spoiler: lost his arms]] fans not only theorized that [[spoiler: he would get new cybernetic ones]], but [[spoiler: it's the Berbils that hook him up with them.]] Guess what happened in the very next episode.
** [[spoiler:A few fans actually did guess that Pumyra would betray the Cats a week before it happened.]]
* LyingCreator: Panthro's dead. No, [[http://crewofomens.tumblr.com/post/8539085553/thanks-for-the-follow-ive-been-a-tcats-fan-for honest]], he's totally dead. Never mind that promo art.
* MeanCharacterNiceActor: Creator/MatthewMercer, voice of Tygra and all around awesome guy, admits that after reading scripts and doing recordings, he sometimes wants to just step back and yell "He's (Tygra) ''such'' a dick!"
* NetworkToTheRescue: The show's ratings were okay, but the toys didn't sell as well as hoped so Creator/WarnerBros talked Creator/CartoonNetwork into moving the show from Friday nights to Saturday mornings as a lead-in to the popular DC Nation programing block. The show's ratings ''doubled'' overnight. Unfortunately...
** ScrewedByTheNetwork: The first sign of trouble was Bandai discontinuing the toyline. The next was when CN, after promising the team 52 episodes, [[ILied proceeded to break their promise]] shortly before the toyline was announced to be dead.
*** New info from an inside source indicates that the toy line isn't dead, and was a mistake made by Amazon.com which has been corrected. Bandai still seems to be supportive of the line. The rest concerning Cartoon Network is true though.
** Creator/{{Toonami}} has decided to pick up the series as part of it's new expanded block, alongside fellow CN favorite ''SymBionicTitan'', giving them the support and reruns they needed which Cartoon Network itself never provided, though now at a very late time slot. Time will tell if this is enough to get both shows another season.
*** Unfortunately, both shows have been taken off in favor of ''LightNovel/SwordArtOnline'' and Season 2 of ''Anime/TheBigO''. Though ''WesterAnimation/SymBionicTitan'' will return, ''WesterAnimation/ThunderCats'' is suffering the worst of it, as Toonami is losing the rights to the show and won't be able to air it again. We can now only hope if its reruns on Toonami have been successful in garnering a second season.
** Though the uncertainty of the show's future could simply be chalked up to the {{troll}}ing creators, who've been yanking audiences chains from day one, [[CallBack Panthro is dead!]]
* OneOfUs: Producer Michael Jelenic has used the terminology BreakoutCharacter and TheScrappy in [[http://www.ksitetv.com/7348/interview-with-the-creative-talents-behind-the-new-thundercats/ an interview]].
** Not to mention Creator/WillFriedle (who is a very vocal ''WesternAnimation/ThunderCats'' and Tolkien fan). Also a PromotedFanboy as the original show is one of the reasons he got into animation. Creator/MatthewMercer and Creator/KevinMichaelRichardson are also big ''WesternAnimation/ThunderCats'' fans, and you can see all three geeking out [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSM8j8GDtZ8 here.]]
*** Speaking of Matthew, he dressed up as Mumm-Ra for Halloween!
**** He's also a ShipperOnDeck who [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egoR4JlfAew teased Lion-O/Pumyra.]]
** Sound editor [[http://soundslikejeff.wordpress.com/ Jeff Shiffman]] reads Wiki/TVTropes and has even [[http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=12960040300A51721400&page=22#544 posted in the ThunderCats thread]].
* PlayingAgainstType: Pamela Adlon is usually known for playing energetic boys in shows like KingOfTheHill and TimeSquad. Here, she plays Pumyra, a young woman with a major temper problem.
* TheOtherDarrin: Leo is voiced by Creator/WillFriedle in his first appearance because of Lion-O reliving events of the past through Leo. "Birth of the Blades" has JasonMarsden voicing him, and this is likely what Leo's actual voice sounds like. This is something of a CastingGag, since Will and Jason are good friends.
* RelationshipVoiceActor: Creator/CreeSummer and Creator/WillFriedle play rebel leaders and sweethearts Panthera and Leo, but Cree was also Max Gibson, GirlFriday to Will's Batman successor in ''WesternAnimation/BatmanBeyond'', then they later played the OfficialCouple in ''VideoGame/TonyHawksUnderground''.
* TeasingCreator: The crew just ''loves'' messing with their fellow fans, especially at the [[http://crewofomens.tumblr.com Crew of Omens]] blog, and occasionally Website/DeviantArt, where a crewmember [[http://farfie-kins.deviantart.com/art/THUNDERCATS-HO-246011858 teased]] the WholeEpisodeFlashback of "Old Friends" in an early review comment. Almost every question of "Will (X) from the old show appear in a future episode?" has been answered with a sly "Maybe" and a wink. They're also very fond of the MathematiciansAnswer.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: A panel discussion at the 2013 Power-Con revealed various tidbits on the planned second season and beyond, including its length (the series was intended to be 65 episodes long), certain character origins [[spoiler:(Snarfs are actually impervious to damage, and were an early experiment at creating a genetically superior race that would ultimately result in the Cats, while Slythe joined Mumm-Ra because Lynx-o had destroyed the marsh where the wives and unborn children of Slythe's tribe were waiting)]], other character tidbits [[spoiler:(Pumyra was ultimately going to be turned into an insectoid monster and try to kill Lion-o, while Lynx-o is beheaded by Slythe in revenge for the aforementioned killing of his tribe's women and unborn children, and Slythe himself would pull a HeelFaceTurn to aid Lion-o that would get him killed by Mumm-Ra)]], and the identity of the last stone Lion-o and his allies were searching for (the Soul Stone).
* WordOfGod: Art director Dan Norton set up a [[http://crewofomens.tumblr.com/ ThunderCats crew blog]] to answer fan questions and also uses [[http://dingo107.deviantart.com/ deviantArt]], frequently posting fan art on the blog.
* WrittenByCastMember: "The Trials of Lion-O: Part 2" and "Birth of the Blades" were written by Creator/WillFriedle.
