* ActorAllusion: When Femme Fatale challenges the Powerpuff Girls to name some memorable female superheroes, Bubbles mentions Supergirl and Batgirl. Bubbles's voice actor, Tara Strong, voiced Batgirl in [[WesternAnimation/BatmanTheAnimatedSeries The New Batman Adventures]] some time earlier.
** A less direct one, but "Octi Gone" has Mojo Jojo dismembering and kidnapping a "friend" of Bubbles and then threatening her by phone. [[Franchise/{{Scream}} Sound familiar from Roger L. Jackson?]]
** The Smiths are a family with a son voiced by Creator/ChristineCavanaugh, a mother voiced by Creator/KathSoucie, and a father voiced by Creator/JeffBennett. Just like [[WesternAnimation/DextersLaboratory Dexter and his parents.]]
** Stanley Practice and his wife Sandra Practice are voiced by Creator/DaranNorris and Susan Blakeslee, respectively; [[WesternAnimation/TheFairlyOddParents Cosmo and Wanda. ]] Their designs show this too, Stanley wears green while Sandra wears pink.
* AdoredByTheNetwork: Along with ''WesternAnimation/DextersLaboratory'', was Creator/CartoonNetwork's flagship series (during the "CartoonCartoons" era of Cartoon Network) that was rerun daily until 2002.
* AndYouThoughtItWouldFail: The test screening for the first pilot was an absolute disaster, with children complaining about the unusual character designs and one even going as far as to say that Craig [=McCracken=] should ''be fired''[[note]]This kid would later serve as the inspiration for [[TakeThat the show's bully Mitch Mitchelson]][[/note]]. Craig went to work redesigning the characters with more traditional features, but then-president of Creator/CartoonNetwork Mike Lazo reassured him that a negative reaction was better than a lukewarm reaction, and that they shouldn't change a thing.
* BannedEpisode: The season 4 "See Me, Feel Me, Gnomey" was banned in the US, due to the heavy use of strobe effects (which would have triggered epileptic seizures in more sensitive viewers, much like the notorious ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}'' episode "Electric Soldier Porygon." Reportedly, it was banned for allegedly having Communist undertones, but this was never proven). The episode can now be seen on the complete series DVD set for the show and on the complete series collection on Netflix. It aired in Canada on March 18, 2004.
* BoxOfficeBomb: Warner Bros' marketing for the movie was quite lousy (as stated in the main page), but CN did their part and promoted it to heck and back (even Creator/AdultSwim got involved). Outside the channel, however, there was barely any mention of it. Not helping was it was pitted against ''Film/MenInBlackII'' on the opening weekend, was overshadowed by the surprise hit ''Like Mike'' and Warner Bros focusing their campaign on the ''Film/ScoobyDoo'' live-action movie. As such it preformed poorly. Because of this, the series finales for ''WesternAnimation/EdEddNEddy'' and ''WesternAnimation/CodenameKidsNextDoor'' were scaled back to made-for-TV fare rather than made into feature films.
* CowboyBebopAtHisComputer: A Russian magazine credited Genndy Tartakovsky as the creator of the series.
* {{Defictionalization}}: The PPG [[http://thumbs3.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/m5kQnM-yeV3lqIrsVnQY2Mg.jpg waffle iron]] from "Collect Her." Ironically, the writers put that in so the episode because they thought it was too absurd to feel like ProductPlacement for actual PPG stuff.
* DevelopmentGag: The designs of the Run-of-the-Mill Girls from "Oops, I Did It Again" were based on redesigns Craig [=McCracken=] came up with after the early pilot received negative test audience reactions due to the girls' bug-like designs.
* ExecutiveMeddling: According to the producers of the 2016 reboot, Sara Bellum was PutOnABus because she was "inappropriate". Considering Miss Keane's breasts were removed (!), it's kind of obvious what the producers have an issue with.
* InMemoriam: The episode ''The City of Frownsville'' was dedicated to those who were killed during the events of 9/11, which happened just before the episode aired.
* KeepCirculatingTheTapes: "See Me, Feel Me, Gnomey" has never been shown in the U.S., not even in the current runs on Boomerang. It ''is'' on the complete series DVD set and on Netflix, though.
* MilestoneCelebration: The 50th issue of the comic book, ''Deja View''.
* NamesTheSame: Mr. Mime shares his name with a significantly happier and far more colorful Pokemon.
* TheOtherDarrin: In the 2016 reboot, Cathy Cavadini (Blossom), Creator/TaraStrong (Bubbles), and [[Creator/ElizabethDaily E.G. Daily]] (Buttercup) are replaced by Amanda Leighton, Kristen Li, and Natalie Palamides respectively.
* PlayingAgainstType:
** Creator/TomKane as Him.
** Creator/JenniferHale as SpoiledBrat Princess Morebucks.
* RelationshipVoiceActor: The Mexican Spanish dub has two hilarious cases of this:
** Cristina Hernandez (Blossom) and Rossy Aguirre (Buttercup) voiced [[Anime/SaberMarionetteJ Lime and Cherry]] respectively, two girls from another trio of super-powered girls living with a guy, except their personalities are different between the two series.
** Also, Cristina Hernandez, along with Enrique Cervantes (Mojo Jojo) and Sergio Gutierrez Coto (The Narrator) voiced [[Film/TheDarkKnightRises Catwoman, Bane]] and [[Film/TheDarkKnightSaga Batman]] respectively. That's right, The Narrator is the [[Franchise/{{Batman}} The Dark Knight]] and he's fighting against Blossom and Mojo Jojo!
** Imagine [[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic Gilda and Fluttershy fighting Discord]] with Blossom.
* RomanceOnTheSet: Husband and wife [=Craig McCracken=] and Lauren Faust met and fell in love while working on this show as creator/director and storyboard artist, respectively.
* TalkingToHimself:
** TomKenny voices the Mayor, the Narrator, Mitch Mitchelson, and Snake and Lil' Arturo of the Gangrene Gang.
** Creator/JeffBennett voices Ace, Grubber, Big Billy, and Dick Hardly.
** Creator/TomKane voices the Professor and HIM.
** Roger L. Jackson voices Mojo Jojo and Butch of the Rowdyruff Boys.
** Creator/JenniferHale voices Ms. Keane, Princess Morbucks and Sedusa.
** Chuck [=McCann=] voices all three Amoeba Boys.
** RobPaulsen voices both Brick and Boomer.
** KathSoucie supplied the voices for Harold Smith's wife and daughter.
** The three actresses for the girls also voiced one each of the three criminal animals from "Sweet 'N Sour."
* ThrowItIn: A lot of the narrator's closing lines [[https://twitter.com/CrackMcCraigen/status/619252796739600385 were improvised]] by Creator/TomKenny.
* TropeNamer:
** FingerlessHands: Former Trope Namer (the trope used to be called Powerpuff Girl Hands). One of the most notable aspects of the Powerpuff Girls' character designs is that their hands lack fingers and thumbs.
** SoOnceAgainTheDayIsSaved: Nearly every episode ends with the Narrator saying "So once again, the day is saved thanks to the Powerpuff Girls", with occasional variations.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Before the Girls, Craig played around with a luchador superhero character as the star for his thesis film, but after drawing a birthday card for his brother with three cute, Margret Keane-inspired girls, he though the idea of those little girls fighting bad guys was hilarious and chose that instead.
** The original tone of the cartoon was meant to be much more adult (it was called "The Whoopass Girls" after all). One can only imagine what that series would've been like if Craig hadn't made it more kid-friendly.
** One planned episode, ''Deja View'', about the girls visiting an alternate universe ruled by their evil versions, ended up being cancelled due to the visuals requiring the budget to go overboard (which they were already stretching). It wound up being given to the comic book writers and turned into [[MilestoneCelebration the 50th issue]].
** As said on the main page, Craig wanted Jack Black to voice the Gnome in "See Me, Feel Me, Gnomey", but they couldn't due to him being too busy and expensive.
** According to Craig on [[http://crackmccraigen.tumblr.com/post/144108197029/if-anything-there-should-be-a-batman-crossover this]] post, one rejected idea the team had considered was doing a DCAU crossover. In it, the Joker came to Townsville and started wreaking havoc, only for the girls to be stopped at every turn by the Mayor because [[NoSuchThingAsBadPublicity the city's been put on the map for being targeted by an A-list villain.]] They wanted to use Bruce Timm's designs for the characters as well.
