!!Craig Kilborn's run
* ActorAllusion: His "In the News" segment was reminiscent of ''Series/TheDailyShow''.
* ThePeteBest: For the second time in two shows; the first being ''The Daily Show''. Just over a month after Kilborn stepped down, he caught a shot from a ''Billboard'' [[https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/a-closer-look-at-music-television-this-week-sept-27-oct-2-2004-66340/ magazine article]] previewing which music acts would be appearing on TV that week; when mentioning that Music/TearsForFears would be appearing on the September 27, 2004, ''LLS'' episode hosted by Creator/MichaelIanBlack, it mentioned that the show was "thankfully no longer hosted by Craig Kilborn."
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Peter Lassally wanted Creator/JonStewart to replace Tom Snyder. At one point in the mid 1990s, Stewart had a holding deal with Worldwide Pants, and was on the verge of hosting a 1:35 AM show that would've competed with Creator/{{NBC}}'s ''Series/{{Later}}''; the show would've began in the 1997-98 TV season, and would've had a huge advantage, as Creator/GregKinnear, who succeeded ''Later'''s first host, Creator/BobCostas, had left when his acting career took off, and the show was on a run of having [[GuestHost Guest Hosts]] that would last until the year 2000, when Cynthia Garrett would become the show's final host. When Kilborn was selected, Lassally, who didn't exactly care for him, entered into semi-retirement, re-emerging when Kilborn left to help pick his replacement.

!!2004 guest hosts
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Creator/StephenColbert declined an offer to be a guest host. Around this time, he had begun developing what would become ''Series/TheColbertReport''.
** When the roster of guest hosts was being put together, Creator/AmySedaris was heavily speculated to be one of them, but she never ended up fronting an episode.
