!!The novels
* AccidentallyCorrectZoology: In the book series the protagonist is [[RaisedByWolves raised by]] a fictional ape species named "Mangani", which combines the physical and behavioral traits of chimpanzees, gorillas and primitive humans. In 1996, in the Bili Forest in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a subspecies of chimpanzee was discovered that is larger than other chimpanzees and shows some gorilla-like behavior. The similarity between the Mangani and the "Bili ape" did not go unnoticed.

!!The live-action films
* DuelingWorks: Due to complex licensing issues related to the character, during the run of the Creator/JohnnyWeissmuller films made by MGM, no less than four competing films and serials by other studios were released, including one starring Creator/BusterCrabbe, two starring Herman Brix, and another starring Glenn Morris. It happened again during the Gordon Scott era in 1959 when a competing ''Tarzan'' reboot film starring Denny Miller was released.

!!The Disney movie
* AwesomeDearBoy: Rosie O'Donnell had always wanted to voice a character in a Disney animated movie.
* CutSong: A few songs cut from the film were actually demo versions of the songs that later appeared in the film. One notable mention goes towards "[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrMMW9H1QoU 6/8 Intro]]" which was actually Phil Collins' proposition as to how the music in the film should sound. Another one is "[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-fFMqsPRh8 I Will Follow]]" which served as a precursor to "Strangers Like Me", but it sounds more like Tarzan is trying to make Jane feel happy.
* DuelingMovies: With ''WesternAnimation/TheIronGiant'', though it was hardly a duel. This was mostly due to marketing, however, as ''Giant'' had a mere four months of advertising from an apathetic studio while ''Tarzan'' was being heavily plugged a year in advance. Things turned out better for ''Giant'' in the end, as it eventually became a massive CultClassic while ''Tarzan'' merely became a footnote on Disney's history.
* EndOfAnEra: Generally considered to be the last film of the Disney Renaissance. Production on ''Kingdom Of The Sun'' was getting worse by the day while this film was wrapping up, convincing the higher ups that it was finally time to put the blockbuster musical formula to rest, making this the final one[[note]]Although the characters do not ''sing'' the actual songs in this one, with a single, brief exception. The others songs appear in the movie non-diagetically and sung by Phil Collins[[/note]]. ''Sun'' eventually became the broad comedy ''Disney/TheEmperorsNewGroove'', the studio's first non-musical since ''Disney/TheRescuersDownUnder'', which kicked off a string of more "experimental" films at the beginning of the New Millennium (''Disney/{{Fantasia 2000}}'' technically came first, but that had been in production for a decade). ''Tarzan'' was also Disney's last hand-drawn film to be guaranteed box office gold, as these newer films did poorly with critics and audiences, ''Disney/LiloAndStitch'' being more of a SleeperHit, thanks to the sudden swerve an heavy competition with CGI features. It all ended up being part of the perfect storm which killed American hand-drawn animated features.

* ScienceMarchesOn: The main reason Disney changed the [[FrazettaMan Mangani]] to gorillas is because of this: Gorillas have been found to be the {{Gentle Giant}}s of the jungle, and thus perfect animals for a Disney film.
* ThrowItIn:
** The scene where Jane was ranting about what happened to her, her father and Clayton, after being rescued from the baboons? That whole thing was improvised by her voice actor, Creator/MinnieDriver.
** Likewise much of Professor Porter's reaction to her ranting was improvised along with other lines such as "Oh, just like Aunt Isabelle" when Jane describes how Tarzan walks.

** Creator/BrendanFraser auditioned for Tarzan. He also starred in the parody ''Film/GeorgeOfTheJungle''.
