* BadExportForYou: The European and Australian Wii U Virtual Console release is the 50Hz SNES version being forced to run at 60Hz, which introduces new glitches that aren't present in the Wii U release in other regions and ''weren't even present at all in the original European/Australian release.''
* DummiedOut:
** There are some leftover enemies, such as a Yameba-like blob called a Bang, a reflective panel called a Reflec, and a miniature Crocomire called a Stoke.
** Coding for a Long Beam power-up can be found in the games data, but no item for it exists in-game, as it's now a default feature of Samus' beam.
* SerendipityWritesThePlot: The appearance of the Varia Suit in ''Super Metroid'' and onwards is the result of the Platform/GameBoy's lack of color. In the original NES game the Varia Suit was denoted by a PaletteSwap. Since the Game Boy was black and white, the suit itself became physically different after being obtained in ''Metroid II''. The design was retained for this game and the rest is history.
* TroubledProduction: According to an [[https://web.archive.org/web/20220410041909/https://www.nintendo.com/super-nes-classic/interview-super-metroid/ interview]] with Creator/YoshioSakamoto, the game was close to being put down not one, not two, but three times; and one of the game's biggest critics was series co-creator Creator/GunpeiYokoi himself. Reportedly, he often angrily asked the team "It isn't fine art! How long is this gonna take?!".
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** According to a popular UrbanLegendOfZelda, the Japanese version of the game has Samus naked during her death animation, but was covered up in the North American version. In an interview, the developers stated that that Samus being naked was never the case, but ''was'' considered during development. [[spoiler:The non-canon ''[[Manga/MetroidSamusAndJoey Metroid EX: Samus and Joey]]'' would later feature show a vision of Samus's naked body]].
** Minako Hamano, the secondary composer for the ''Metroid'' series next to Music/KenjiYamamoto, originally did the voice for Samus when she dies. However Yamamoto stated it had to be dropped because her voice sounded ''too sexual''. See [[https://metroiddatabase.com/features/super-metroid-development-team-interview/ here for more details]].
