!! [[Franchise/StarshipTroopers The Franchise in general]]:

* FountainOfExpies: The Arachnids from the book became the major inspiration for every swarm of man-eating InsectoidAliens that infest the ScienceFiction and SpaceOpera genres. From the Xenomorphs from ''Franchise/{{Alien}}'', to the Tyranids from ''TabletopGame/Warhammer40000'', to the Zerg from ''VideoGame/StarCraft'', to the Brood and the Annihilation Wave from ''Creator/MarvelComics''.
* NoExportForYou: The OVA adaptation of the novel has never been officially released in the states.
* ReferencedBy: ''VideoGame/{{Helldivers}}'' celebrates the FictionalHoliday of "Liberty Day" on the Novel's original release date of October 26th.

!! [[Film/StarshipTroopers Films]]:

* BoxOfficeBomb: Budget, $105 million. Box office, $54,814,377 (domestic), $121,214,377 (worldwide).
* ColbertBump: The film gained a resurgence in interest following the release and explosive popularity of ''VideoGame/HelldiversII'', which has oft been described as a SpiritualSuccessor to ''Starship Troopers''. Even the director of the game was [[https://www.ign.com/articles/helldivers-2-director-starship-troopers-renewed-interest-incredible pleasantly surprised]] by this.
* CompletelyDifferentTitle: in Latin America the film is named ''Invasión'' and in Spain is known as ''Las Brigadas del Espacio''.
* CreatorsFavoriteEpisode: Creator/PaulVerhoeven and Creator/CasperVanDien named this as their favourite film of their own.
* CreatorsFavorite: Creator/CasperVanDien named Johnny Rico as his favourite role.
* DawsonCasting: Creator/CasperVanDien, Patrick Muldoon and Creator/DinaMeyer were ''twenty-nine'' playing ''high school graduates'', Creator/DeniseRichards was 26, Creator/NeilPatrickHarris was 24, and the other "high schoolers" weren't much younger.
* DisabledCharacterDisabledActor: The triple amputee Recruiting Sergeant is played by Creator/RobertDavidHall, who is an actual double leg amputee.
* DolledUpInstallment: This film was originally an ''Film/{{Aliens}}'' ripoff called ''Bug Hunt at Outpost Nine'', but enough similarities between it and Heinlein's novel were noticed that the studio bought the novel's film rights to avoid a plagiarism suit and the script altered accordingly (''Aliens'' was itself heavily based on the novel). Verhoeven claims to have only read the first two chapters of the book before giving up out of boredom and/or disgust.
* DyeingForYourArt: Creator/CasperVanDien lost 15 pounds for the whipping scene.
* FakeNationality: ''EVERYONE'' playing Argentinian characters are just Americans [[NotEvenBotheringWithTheAccent using their normal accents.]] Special mention may have to go to Shujumi who in the book (as one might guess from his name) is Japanese, played here by American actor Anthony Ruivivar, who is not of Japanese descent.
* HeyItsThatPlace: The exteriors of Rico, Carl, Dizzy and Carmen's school were shot at the Baldwin Park Medical Center (CA) which was also used for [=TraviCom=]'s headquarters in ''Film/{{Congo}}''.
* PlayingAgainstType: Creator/ClancyBrown, normally a villain actor, playing a "good guy" in Sergeant Zim. It's one of only several of these types of roles he's done, with Captain Black and Super Moose from ''WesternAnimation/JackieChanAdventures'', Raiden in ''WesternAnimation/MortalKombatDefendersOfTheRealm'', Lt. Hank Anderson in ''VideoGame/DetroitBecomeHuman'' and a doctor in ''Film/CowboysAndAliens'' being some of the few other good examples.
* PropRecycling:
** ''Series/PowerRangersLostGalaxy'', ''Series/{{Firefly}}'', ''Film/GSaviour'' -- the armor from this movie has shown up ''everywhere''. After getting passed around Hollywood for years several of the suits were eventually sold for use in the third movie, making this a weird circular trope.
** The USM ''Auriga'' in ''Film/AlienResurrection'' appears to have been made from a modified model of the ''Rodger Young'', or one of its sister ships.
* RecycledSet: Some of the walls were reused from ''Film/TotalRecall1990''.
* ReferencedBy: NSA Agent Ron Fox from ''Film/HaroldAndKumarEscapeFromGuantanamoBay'' states that the movie was the reason he joined the army. ''To [[AsHimself Neil Patrick Harris.]]''
* RomanceOnTheSet: Eric Bruskotter and Tami-Adrian George, who played recruits Breckinridge and Djana'D respectively. They are both introduced together as new recruits, and they both leave the movie together when [[IJustShotMarvinInTheFace Djana'D accidentally shoots Breckinridge in the head during a live firing round]], and Djana'D quits. [[HappilyEverAfter They began dating during filming, later married, and are still together to this day]].
* WagTheDirector: Creator/DeniseRichards refused to do a topless scene which wasn't in the original script. During filming, Creator/PaulVerhoeven told her that he had written new scenes for her, including a love scene, which would require nudity. Despite the fact that this was only her first big-budget film, she said no because she didn't think her being nude related to her character or the movie.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** In the script, there was a scene during a [=FedNet=] broadcast showing the Mobile Infantry reclaiming Dantana, the planet where a Mormon colony was massacred, in the prelude to the Klendathu invasion.
** The original prop for the Morita assault rifle was going to be made out of the M60, with [[http://www.imfdb.org/images/7/79/StarshipTroopersM60Morita.jpg various added and removed or modified parts]] to change the look of the weapon; ultimately, the rifles were built out of the Ruger [=AC556=] in a bullpup conversion kit. The final props do include M60 muzzle brakes, though.
** Creator/JoshBrolin, Creator/MattDamon, Creator/JamesMarsden, Creator/JasonPriestley, Creator/KeanuReeves and Creator/MarkWahlberg were considered for Johnny Rico.
** Creator/NeveCampbell was considered for Carmen, but she was busy with ''Film/Scream2''.
** Creator/MichaelDouglas was considered for Mr. Rasczak.
** Cyrano, Carl's pet ferret, was originally scripted as being a frog.
** Creator/JamesCameron was attached to direct at one point.
* WordOfGod:
** In the director commentary on the Blu-ray DVD Creator/PaulVerhoeven stated showing the mutilated bodies on [=FedNet=] was to encourage more people to join the Federation, the cow being censored was due to PETA animal supporters, and the experiments on the Brain Bug were censored as it was classified information.
** In [[https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/paul-verhoeven/ an interview with Empire in 2012]], Verhoeven states the co-ed shower scene was a demonstration of how the characters are fascist.
---> The idea I wanted to express was that these so-called advanced people are without libido. Here they are talking about war and their careers and not looking at each other at all! It is sublimated because they are fascists.
* WordOfSaintPaul: Creator/CasperVanDien says he was often asked why a blonde-haired, blue-eyed actor would play the Argentinian Juan Rico. He suggests that his character was the descendant of exiled Germans (Argentina was famously a hiding place of German war criminals after World War II).
* WorkingTitle: ''Bug Hunt at Outpost Nine'', an unrelated script that was later changed into an adaptation of [[Literature/StarshipTroopers the novel]].
* YouLookFamiliar: Brenda Strong, who played Captain Deladier in the first film, comes back in the second film as Sergeant Rake.

!! [[Literature/StarshipTroopers The book]]:
* HaveAGayOldTime: Johnny's discription of the planet Sanctuary as "Like Earth, but retarded". In the 50s, ''retarded'' was a polite euphemism. Today, thanks to the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euphemism#Euphemism_treadmill Euphemism Treadmill]] effect, the word is considered a slur.
* ReferencedBy: In the first chapter, semisentient bombs that yell their countdowns are mentioned. The character Andy from ''WebAnimation/RedVsBlue'' is one of these.
** The premise of ''VideoGame/StarCraft.'' Power-armored action heroes fighting a BugWar (with the Skinnies being upgraded to a third faction of SpaceElves because Blizzard was also inspired by Warhammer 40,000).
** ''VideoGame/StarCraftII'' has a Terran grenadier soldier called the Marauder.
** Speaking of ''TabletopGame/Warhammer40000,'' the Tyranids are a CaptainErsatz of the Pseudoarachnids.
** In ''Literature/{{Armor}}'', Felix is asked if he joined up because the Ants nuked his South-American hometown.
* ScienceMarchesOn: The planet where life doesn't evolve because it doesn't get enough mutation-causing radiation. We now know that even with zero radiation, the enzymes that replicate DNA still make mistakes sometimes.
** Well, the planet DOES have multiple species of native life that are different from each other. Presumably it still has some amount of genetic change so that there's any speciation at all... just a lot less than Earth, resulting in slower evolution.
* WriterConflictsWithCanon: The controversies over the novel's ethical and political messages are exacerbated by the fact that some of the things Heinlein said about the worldbuilding in later interviews and essays don't seem to fit what is actually depicted in the novel, in particular whether "public service" in the novel's society refers to any kind of government work or only front-line military combat.

!! [[VideoGame/StarshipTroopers 2005 First Person Shooter]]:

* {{Abandonware}}: Empire Interactive went under in 2009 and Strangelite was bought by Creator/{{Rebellion}}, who doesn't seem to bother about re-publishing the game.
* KeepCirculatingTheTapes: Nowadays, the game is quite rare; your only hope to (legally) obtain a copy of this game is via Amazon or eBay.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: The game was originally going to be ported to the Platform/PlayStation2.
