* AscendedFanon: When the Widow Mine was turned from an actual mine into a missile-shooting Area Denial Weapons System, many of the beta testers asked its name to be changed due to it becoming a NonIndicativeName. While the actual unit name couldn't be changed for multiple reasons, the name "Sentinel" was thrown around the forums a lot, so its weapon name was changed from "Unstable Payload" to "Sentinel Missiles" as a compromise.
* FanNickname:
** The Overlord's ability to produce creeps is referred to by fans as "Diarrhea".
** Anything Arthas-related for Valerian.
** Some people like referring to Rory Swann as a "Space Dwarf" since he's short, stocky, bearded and good with machines. He does spend all his time in Bay 12. No Scottish accent, though.
** Watching commentary replays of pro-level games requires learning an entire fan vocabulary of names for the different build orders and strategies used, especially since several terms sound similar but have different meanings, such as six-poolA Zerg player creates a spawning pool with his sixth drone, 4-gateA Protoss player builds four gateways before focusing on anything else, regardless of worker count, and one-one-oneA Terran player builds one Barracks, one Factory, and one Starport, racing up the TechTree to air units as fast as possible. Occasionally called the Destiny Cloudfist Build by Creator/HuskyStarcraft fans..
* Irony As They Are Cast: Mengsk's voice actor (James Harper) is friends with Tosh's voice actor, (Dave Fennoy) whereas in the game, they hate each other.
* LyingCreator: As the trilogy's story unfolded, a lot of fans pegged it as being a rehash of VideoGame/WarCraft3 -- an outside force (The Hybrids/The Burning Legion) has arrived to destroy the world, and the three warring factions (Terrans-Zerg-Protoss/Humans-Orcs-Night Elves) put aside their differences and join forces to defend their home and drive back the outsiders. Blizzard shot down this idea, noting that between the clashing personalities and personal grudges of the leaders of the three races, and the bitter history of warfare between them, it was unlikely for them to all come together as one.
* NoExportForYou: The jukebox has some pretty awesome tunes. Too bad you can't have it on your MP3 player if you live in the two-thirds of the world where iTunes doesn't sell music tho. And to drive the insult home, even if you have successfully ripped the music out of the game files, you still won't have the extra tracks only available on the digital album. Plus, the files have been filtered to sound as if it's being played on a jukebox (complete with vinyl crackles) so it won't be satisfactory to listen from an MP3 player
* PlayingAgainstType: Creator/ScottMenville as Egon.
** Creator/CreeSummer as Protoss Executor Selendis.
** Creator/TravisWillingham as Phasesmith Karax
* TheOtherDarrin:
** Zeratul, and Kerrigan get new voice actors.
*** In Zeratul's case, the original voice actor died. Said voice actor, Jack Ritschel, had voiced no less than five major characters in the original [=StarCraft=], so his other characters appearing in this game (the Overmind and Artanis, and possibly General Duke for his one line) also got new voice actors.
*** Kerrigan's change is somewhat bittersweet. While her original VA, Glynnis Talken Campbell, is adored by StarCraft fans, her new VA is universally nerd-approved Creator/TriciaHelfer. They go so far as to redo several of Kerrigan's lines from a pivotal moment in the first game with the new VA, so at least they didn't half-ass it.
*** , meanwhile, is now voiced by Creator/MichaelDorn. .
** In the Latin American dub, several characters got new voice actors in-between the games of the trilogy, this being because of a change in the dub studio (From Colombia to Argentina). From Wings of Liberty to Heart of the Swarm, General Warfield and Emil Narud's voice actors were changed from Armando Duque and Eleazar Osorio to René Sagastume and Sebastián Pinardi, respectively, but in the transition from Heart of the Swarm to Legacy of the Void: everyone except for Raynor, Kerrigan and the characters that did not appear in Wings of Liberty got new voice actors.
* RelationshipVoiceActor:
** Half year later, Matt HornerCreator/BrianBloom, Valerian MengskCreator/JoshKeaton, Zeratul/Rory SwannFredTatasciore and the Dark VoiceCreator/RickDWasserman would be Captain America, Spider-Man, the Hulk, and Thor.
** Ariel HansonCreator/AliHillis and the Ghost unitCreator/LiamOBrien are Lightning and Kain. Or, if you prefer, add Kachinsky to the mix to have Lightning, Noel and Caius.
** Jim RaynorRobert Clotworthy, Matt HornerCreator/BrianBloom, Valerian MengskCreator/JoshKeaton and Zeratul/Rory SwannFredTatasciore also are Mr. Fantastic, Daredevil/Bullseye, Human Torch and Hulk/The Thing/Carnage.
** The Prophecy cutscene gives us Saren vs. EDI, by way of both FredTatasciore and Tricia Helfer voicing both Zeratul and Kerrigan.
** Nova, Selendis, and Mira Horner are Emily Elizabeth, Cleo and Jetta.
** Zurvan and Abathur/Dehaka are Megatron and Starscream. Additionally, Zurvan and Bralik/Lee Keno are Megatron and Bumblebee.
** Alarak and Spirit!Tassadar were Q and Worf. Additionally, Spirit!Tassadar and Emil Narud were Worf and Quark.
** Artanis, Vanitas and Karax are Hugo, M. Bison and Guile. Too bad you don't get to have them fight each other in this game.
* SavedFromDevelopmentHell: A case of a character being rescued from development hell. Like Thrall (from VideoGame/Warcraft) before her, Nova was supposed to be in a game (Starcraft: Ghost) that was never released, but got included in the main franchise anyway. And the first DLC after the conclusion of the main series will have her in the leading role.
* ThrowItIn: The strange glowy hexagons on some of the fields were at one point a testing pattern, possibly used to test movement and cell selection. During play testing, someone thought they looked neat, so they decided to keep them.
