* AcclaimedFlop: Bones and Toonami had high hopes for the series in the Western market, to the point it premiered on Adult Swim the day ''before'' it aired in Japan. Sadly, it didn't meet those expectations. Most critics and fans love it, but it's never obtained the popularity of ''Anime/CowboyBebop'' or even ''Anime/SamuraiChamploo''. [[https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2018-03-07/why-wasnt-space-dandy-the-next-cowboy-bebop/.128664 Here's]] a whole article speculating why it wasn't a bigger hit. It doesn't help that, unlike Watanabe's previous shows, this one only had ''three'' known foreign-dubbed versions: English, French and German, the latter two were only dubbed because it's mandatory by law in France and Germany.
* ActingForTwo: In Episode 14, all of the alternate Dandys, [=QTs=], Meows, Honeys and narrators are voiced by their respective voice actors. It gets pretty elaborate.
* AdoredByTheNetwork: Not only did this show world premiere on Creator/{{Toonami}}, but it kicked off the block at 11:30 PM (Toonami used to start at midnight), and was also the first (and until ''Manga/AttackOnTitan'' started airing, the only) show that had "Next Episode" previews aired weekly. Even when it was airing Season 1 reruns, it still counted because it was airing at 12:30 AM, before ''premieres'' of ''[[Manga/{{Naruto}} Naruto Shippuden]]'', ''Manga/OnePiece'' and ''Manga/BlueExorcist''. Justified, because Toonami is covering new, potentially beneficial ground with airing world premieres of ''Space Dandy'', and [[Administrivia/TropesAreTools how the show performs (regardless of whether it's reruns or premieres) could easily influence whether or not future world premieres could occur]]. It worked well, with the second season premiere also getting a big opening with a short marathon and replacing ''Attack On Titan''.
* AnimeFirst: A ''Space Dandy'' manga is currently being serialized in ''Young Gangan''.
* CastingGag:
** Take a good look to VideoGame/{{Catherine}}'s and her [[Creator/MiyukiSawashiro Japanese VA]], not to mention her background.
** Adélie in the dub--[[Anime/MichikoAndHatchin a blonde-haired little girl who's much more mature than the adult she's traveling with...]]
** Gentle isn't the [[Manga/OuranHighSchoolHostClub first]] blonde PrincelyYoungMan voiced by Creator/VicMignogna.
* TheDanza: Johnny, leader of the Jaicro empire, is voiced by Creator/JohnnyYongBosch in the English dub--and is mostly based on [[PigeonholedVoiceActor the kind]] [[{{Bishonen}} of]] [[TheHero characters]] [[LargeHam he]] [[{{Hotblooded}} voices]]. ''Franchise/PowerRangers'' reference? Check. A rock star? Check. {{Bishonen}}? Check. Moments of LargeHam? Check. A very heroic personality? Check. HotBlooded? Checkmate.
* PlayingAgainstType: None of the actors so far, but Creator/ShinichiroWatanabe himself. His previous works are more seriously-toned and, with the exception of ''Manga/{{Kids on the Slope}}'', mostly stay within the action genre (though granted, ''Anime/CowboyBebop'' and ''Anime/SamuraiChamploo'', two of his most famous works, do have their comedic moments). ''Space Dandy'' is more of a wacky action-comedy, throwing the serious tone completely out the window.
** Given the traditional repertoire of Creator/BrycePapenbrook (such as [[Manga/BlueExorcist Rin]], [[Literature/SwordArtOnline Kirito]], and [[Manga/AttackOnTitan Eren Yeager]]), playing a stoic nutjob like Ukeleleman is a bit of a departure.
** Elizabeth Maxwell as Poe.
* ShortRunInPeru: A very minor example, as the show made its world premiere on Creator/{{Toonami}} in the U.S. ''a few hours'' before it aired in Japan.
** Funimation actually ''loved'' this, because it let them monitor internet reactions and see just how many "The Japanese Version Is Better" people were complaining about shows they don't watch.
* StarMakingRole: For both Creator/IanSinclair and Creator/JoelMcDonald
* TeasingCreator: Replacing the main characters [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5sBFHSnYsY after the 14th episode]] with unlikable AlternateUniverse versions? Ha, no.
* WordOfGod: Shinichiro Watanabe confirmed in a 2019 interview that ''Anime/SamuraiChamploo'', ''Anime/CowboyBebop'', ''Anime/CaroleAndTuesday'', and ''Anime/SpaceDandy'' all exist within the [[SharedUniverse same universe]], and in that chronological order. This is really nothing much more than flimsy justification to make self-references to the other series, but he said it.

!Miscellaneous
* ''Space Dandy'' holds the distinction of being the first Shinichiro Watanabe-directed anime to be dubbed by Creator/FUNimation. [[note]]''Anime/CowboyBebop'' was dubbed by Creator/BandaiEntertainment, ''Anime/SamuraiChamploo'' was dubbed by Creator/{{Geneon}}, and ''Manga/{{Kids on the Slope}}'' is dubbed by Creator/SentaiFilmworks. Interestingly, the licenses for the former two have been picked up by Creator/FUNimation, who now handles their DVD/Blu-Ray releases. Space Dandy is no longer the only Watanabe anime licensed by Creator/FUNimation as they now have the rights to ''Anime/TerrorInResonance''[[/note]]
* Episode 10, which focuses heavily on [[spoiler:[[GroundhogDayLoop a mobius loop and]]]] the number 8, aired on March 8th, and at the end of the episode, it was time for the east coast of the US to lose an hour due to Daylight Savings Time.
