* CashCowFranchise: ''Resident Evil'' is one of Creator/{{Capcom}}'s most popular and successful franchises.
* DoingItForTheArt: One scene in the remake has a closeup of Wesker's boot, which shows that the top buckles are not laced up. In the same game the character select shows that for Chris' police ID, a coin is stuck in the clear plastic where the photo is.
* FanNickname:
** "''The Resident of Evil Creek''", taken from a hilariously out-of-touch judge's opinion on the First Amendment rights of video games.
** Some fans have dubbed Alfred's "Alexia" persona as "Alfrexia."
* NoDubForYou: The games were only voiced in English for quite some time, being released with subtitles for different regions but without the corresponding voice tracks even in Capcom's native Japan. The trend was subverted when Chris, Jill, Wesker, and Leon received Japanese voice actors for {{Crossover}}s like ''VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom3'' and the ''VideoGame/ProjectXZone'' games. ''[[VideoGame/ResidentEvilRevelations Revelations]]'' marked the first time players could choose between Japanese and English audio and ''[[VideoGame/ResidentEvil6 6]]'' released a free DLC update which provided a Japanese voice track. ''[[Anime/ResidentEvilDegeneration Degeneration]]'' also had dual audio, but the direct sequel ''[[Anime/ResidentEvilDamnation Damnation]]'' surprisingly only has the original English dub.

* PlayingAgainstType: A surprising number of characters throughout the series (particularly in ''Resident Evil 2'', ''Resident Evil 3'', and ''Resident Evil 4'') are voiced by actors who previously only appeared in children's entertainment.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** The original game didn't originally have the auto-aim mode, and its item boxes weren't interconnected. Both these features were added to the game due to criticism from play testers. However, the "[[HarderThanHard Real Survival]]" mode from the remake removes those options again, bringing the game back to how it was originally planned; something that the mode's unlockable message lampshades.
** The original versions of ''[=RE2=]'' and ''[=RE4=]'', known as ''Resident Evil 1.5'' and ''3.5'', respectively. Both versions were scrapped due to the developers being unsatisfied with the direction they were taking. One of the scrapped ''Resident Evil 4'' ideas had Leon going through a castle fighting living dolls. Which was deemed too "supernatural" for a series based on science. An even earlier version of ''Resident Evil 4'' was retooled into ''Franchise/DevilMayCry''.
** ''Resident Evil 3: Nemesis'' was originally going to be [[GaidenGame a side story]] of ''Resident Evil 2'', while ''Code: Veronica'' was going to be titled ''Resident Evil 3: Code Veronica''. ''Nemesis'' proved to have a lot more content than what was typical of gaiden games, so they took away ''[=CV=]'''s "''3''" and slapped it onto ''Nemesis''.
** In 2001, Capcom announced that the ''Resident Evil'' franchise was going to be exclusive for the UsefulNotes/NintendoGameCube. In addition to straight ports of ''Resident Evil 2'', ''3'', and ''[[VideoGame/ResidentEvilCodeVeronica Code: Veronica X]]'', a total of two new games, one of which was the ''[=REmake=]'', were released; ''Resident Evil 4'' was also announced as a [=GameCube=] exclusive before Capcom decided that due to poor sales of ''Zero'' and the ''[=REmake=]'', they would release the game on the UsefulNotes/PlayStation2 as well.

!!Movies

* ActorInspiredElement: Creator/MillaJovovich suggested the idea of claiming there was a heatwave in Raccoon City - to account for Jill and Alice not wearing very much. This backfired when filming in Toronto happened during November.
* AwesomeDearBoy: Creator/MichelleRodriguez told her agent to let her know the second a ''Resident Evil'' movie was greenlit. Sure enough she ended up cast as Rain for the first film.
* TheCameo: Jason Isaacs has one as a doctor who says to re-open the Hive. He also provides the opening narration.
* CastTheExpert: Oded Fehr had served in the Israeli military, so he had little difficulty playing Carlos.
* CreatorCameo: Producer Jeremy Bolt has a cameo as one of the zombies.
* DoingItForTheArt: Paul W.S. Anderson wrote the script for the first film specifically because he wanted to ensure that ''Resident Evil'' got a decent cinematic adaptation, and the films are loaded with winking little references to the games.
* DyeingForYourArt: The actress who plays the scientist that revives underwater in the first film, Anna Bolt, learned how to scuba dive for her OneSceneWonder role. Likewise all the actors playing commandos, as well as Jovovich and Eric Mabius, had to undergo a week's training with a Navy SEAL.
* FakeAmerican: There's a few of them in the cast, since the film was shot in Europe. James Purefoy, Martin Caplan, Colin Salmon and Sienna Guillory are all British.
* FakeBrit: Irish actress Sophie Vavasseur plays the English character Angela "Angie" Ashford in the second film.
* MoneyDearBoy: Jovovich [[http://shocktillyoudrop.com/news/topnews.php?id=11268 flat out admits]] that this is why they made a fourth live-action movie. [[http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2010/09/milla_jovovich_were_definitely.html True for the fifth]] as well (to a degree).
* ReferencedBy: ''Last Empire: War Z'', a ZombieApocalypse base-building game for Smartphones, has an item that looks identical to the T-Virus samples-ie, a glass jar with a double-helix decoration down the middle, capped with a metal plug on each end, filled with green liquid. To really ram it home, the item is called "Virus Stock" and is used to manufacture zombie-based SuperSoldiers-basically Tyrants and other BOW's.
** ''VideoGame/PlagueInc'' has the Necroa Virus as a DLC, a highly mutagenic virus that induces a HealingFactor in it's victims strong enough to bring them BackFromTheDead (sounds an awful lot like the T-Virus, doesn't it?). [[MultipleChoicePast In it's American backstory]], it's a bioweapon created by an unscrupulous pharmecutecal MegaCorp that throws their considerable resources behind covering it up. Unlike Umbrella, said company has a HeelFaceTurn and uses it's RedShirtArmy to try and fix things. Eventually.
* RomanceOnTheSet: Anderson and Jovovich met while working on the first movie; currently, they're married.
* ThrowItIn: The first movie was not supposed to have the little nudity it did, according to the DVD commentary. Apparently, Jovovich had a WardrobeMalfunction twice in the same movie. It was left in.
* TooSoon: The first film would have the subtitle ''Ground Zero'', but that was left out after 9/11 happened.
* TroubledProduction: The sixth film suffered multiple accidents behind the scenes. A stunt double was severely injured when her motorcycle hit a camera crane, necessitating a medically-induced coma and the eventual amputation of her left arm. Later, a member of the crew was killed when a Hummer used in the film fell on him.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** [[Film/NightOfTheLivingDead1968 George A. Romero]] wrote [[http://www.dailyscript.com/scripts/resident_evil_romero.html a screenplay]] for and was to direct the first film. It was thrown out entirely when he was kicked off the project. Capcom thought that, while Romero's script was close, it wasn't a full adaptation of the game, and they believed fans would complain about the changes while newcomers would dislike the premise. But confusion sets in when they approved Paul W.S. Anderson's script even though it's a much, ''much'' farther cry from ''Resident Evil''.[[note]]In as few words as possible, Romero's script was a rough adaptation of the first game and included all of the main characters, while Anderson's was a completely original story that featured all new characters, and whose only connection to the games was Umbrella, the T-virus and zombies.[[/note]] WordOfGod is that Capcom didn't want a direct adaptation, out of fear that fans would stop playing the games in favor of watching the movies.
** Creator/DavidBoreanaz was approached to play Matt but he turned it down due to ''{{Series/Angel}}'' commitments. Hilariously at one point Creator/SarahMichelleGellar was set to star as Alice too.
** LJ was originally supposed to be played by ''Music/SnoopDogg'' rather than Mike Epps.
** Had Sienna Guillory not been preoccupied with the ''Film/{{Eragon}}'' movie, Jill would have fulfilled Claire Redfield's role in ''[[Film/ResidentEvilExtinction Extinction]]''. Her dropping out of the third movie caused an entire subplot to be removed, in which Jill is hostile and untrustful towards Alice, due to Alice apparently [[WhatHappenedToTheMouse killing Angela "Angie" Ashford between films while under Umbrella's control.]] This subplot would have culminated with Jill being infected by a zombified Carlos, and sacrificing herself in the tanker the way Carlos does in the finished script. The novelization keeps Angie's death intact, but says that Jill is off leading a bunch of other survivors.
** Claire was meant to appear much earlier in the films, with Gina Phillips starring in the first and Emily Bergl in the second. The character was pushed back each time the actress dropped out.
** The White Queen from the third film would originally have appeared in the first (one of the older scripts for the Alice version, not the Jill and Chris).
** The fourth film would originally have had a different story, including Leon S. Kennedy from the video games. Creator/JensenAckles was in talks to play him.
