* DiedDuringProduction:
** Smiley Burnett, who played Charley the train conductor, died of leukemia shortly after the fourth season was filmed.
** Bea Benederet, who played Kate, ended up passing away from lung cancer during the sixth season. The showrunners had to move up the birth of Betty Jo's daughter so they could make it before she passed. Benederet was only able to provide her voice, which was dubbed over footage of a stand-in with her back to the camera. She was dead by the time the episode was broadcast.
** There was also a close call with Smiley Burnett's eventual replacement, Byron Foulger, who died on the very day the final "Petticoat Junction" aired. The ailing Foulger was absent from the final season.
* TheCastShowoff:
** An early example; while the first Bobbie Jo (as played by Pat Woddell) got to show her singing skills, this really didn't become prevalent until [[TheOtherDarrin Meredith MacRae]] took over as Billie Jo in 1966. Soon after, several songs featuring the actresses playing the sisters began to be produced.
** Steve Elliott, as portrayed by actor/singer Mike Minor, often got musical numbers as well.
* TheCharacterDiedWithHim: After the death of Smiley Burnett, his character Charley died off-screen, leaving Floyd to take care of the Cannonball himself.
* {{Defictionalization}}: There was a restaurant next to a railroad line in Texas which was named "Petticoat Junction." Eventually, a few bedrooms were added for the railworkers and they gained the name "Shady Rest Hotel", also after the show.
* KeepCirculatingTheTapes: Seems to be the case for the show on DVD. It wasn't until 2005 when the show got its first official DVD release, and it just contained a few episodes from the first season. CBS eventually started releasing the show in 2008, but there hasn't been anything since Season 3 was released in 2014. Seasons 4-7 are still missing, presumably because of [[ScrewedByTheLawyers music licensing issues.]]
* MissingEpisode: Before the show was picked up by Creator/MeTV in 2011, the first two seasons were never aired in syndication because CBS never renewed the rights to the series. In fact, most of the first season has entered the public domain as a result.
* TheOtherDarrin:
** Of the three main girls, Betty Jo (played by Linda Kaye Henning) was the only one whose actress remained the same throughout the show's run.
** Billie Jo was played by Jeannine Riley in the first two seasons before she left to pursue an (ultimately unsuccessful) film career. Swedish actress Gunilla Hutton played the role in the third season, with the character demoted to more of a recurring role. The character was brought back full time in the fourth season with the late Meredith [=MacRae=] playing the character until the end of the show. The original choice was Sharon Tate, but she dropped out before filming any episodes.
** Bobbie Jo was played by the late Pat Woodell in the first two seasons, but the show ended up conflicting with her singing career, and she increasingly missed days of filming, resulting in doubles being used for some shots. After her departure, Lori Saunders played the character in the last four seasons, resulting in the character being revamped from a CuteBookworm to TheDitz.
* OnlyBarelyRenewed: The show was meant to be cancelled after season six, but CBS gave it a seventh season at the last minute, to give it five seasons produced in color, which would give it a longer life in syndication.
* RealLifeRelative: Linda Kaye Henning is the daughter of Executive Producer Paul Henning.
** Jack Bannon, Bea Benaderet's son, served as the series' Dialogue Coach, performing the same duties on sister show Green Acres. He also had a recurring role as Bobbie Jo's beau Roger.
* ReferencedBy:
** The last junction in the factory monorail segment before the sludge vat in ''VideoGame/TheAdventuresOfWillyBeamish'' is the Petticoat Junction.
** A notable inn in ''VideoGame/WorldOfWarcraft'' that served as a quest location prior to the destruction of Theramore Isle was known as The Shady Rest.
* {{Retcon}}: People often consider Petticoat Junction, and by association, Green Acres, to be spin-offs of The Beverly Hillbillies. However, there was no sign for the first several seasons that the shows were in any way related. In fact, The Beverly Hillbillies is popular TV-viewing in Hooterville, often mentioned on Green Acres. In the sixth season, Granny (from "Hillbillies") pays a visit to Hooterville and mentions that Kate is a distant but lookalike cousin of Pearl, the character Bea Benederet had played on her show. From then on, The Beverly Hillbillies exists in a shared continuity with the other two, and characters from the two newer series at times make appearances on "Hillbillies", and vice-versa.
* RomanceOnTheSet: Linda Kaye Henning (who played Betty Jo) and Mike Minor (Steve Elliott) ended up marrying in real life in 1968, several months after their characters tied the knot. The two, however, ended up divorcing by 1973.
* ScrewedByTheNetwork: It was one of the first shows to be affected by UsefulNotes/TheRuralPurge, although it had also been suffering from low ratings near the end.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: [[Film/RosemarysBaby Sharon]] [[Literature/ValleyOfTheDolls Tate]] was originally considered for the role of Billie Jo Bradley, but Creator/{{Filmways}} president Martin Ransohoff felt she didn't have enough acting experience and went with Jeannine Riley, with Tate cast in bit parts briefly on fellow Filmways productions ''Series/TheBeverlyHillbillies'' and ''Series/MisterEd''.
** Paul Henning originally wanted to hold a contest to name the Bradley's new dog in the beginning of the second season. The contest never ended up happening, and as a result, [[ADogNamedDog the dog was never properly named.]]
** Steve was originally meant to the love interest for Billie Jo, but after his actor Mike Minor started dating Linda Kaye Henning, Steve ended up dating (and eventually marrying) Betty Jo instead.
** In the late '70s, there were plans for a reunion movie called ''Hello Again Hooterville: A Thanksgiving Reunion'', but it was cancelled for unknown reasons.
* WorkingTitle: The show was originally proposed to be titled ''Ozark Widow'', ''Dern Tootin’'', and ''Whistle Stop''.
* WriteWhatYouKnow: Paul Henning based the series on a little town his wife knew in her childhood.
