* BoxOfficeBomb: Budget, $20 million. Box office, $18.43 million. It had a mixed response, with most critics agreeing that Creator/MatthewBroderick was [[QuestionableCasting out of place in the film]]. It's since become a CultClassic.
* CastTheRunnerUp: Creator/RichardDonner wanted to cast Creator/KurtRussell as Navarre and Creator/RutgerHauer as Marquet, the Bishop's Captain of the Guards. Russell turned down the role so Hauer filled in the part of Navarre instead.
* PlayingAgainstType: Often cast as imposing villains or antagonists, here Creator/RutgerHauer actually gets to play TheHero. Perhaps not surprisingly, the [[WhatCouldHaveBeen original plan]] was for Hauer to play TheDragon, but he was recast as the hero when Creator/KurtRussell dropped out of the film.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Creator/SeanConnery was originally considered for Marquet.
** Creator/DustinHoffman and Creator/SeanPenn were offered the role of Phillipe Gaston.
** Donner once said that he had considered Music/MickJagger for the Bishop.
** Donner offered Creator/MelGibson a role, but he was unavailable.
** The film was originally going to be closer to straight fantasy, with magic and monsters, but it was dialed back to a DealWithTheDevil instead.
