* ColbertBump: The Website/SomethingAwful LetsPlay, especially LetsPlay/ProtonJon's segments, helped popularize ''Kaizo Mario''.
* FollowTheLeader: The popularity of the original romhack and the reactions of those who played it kicked off an entire trend of "Kaizo Clones" in the game mod scene. Some hackers even made Kaizo hacks of ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros3'', ''VideoGame/SuperMario64'', ''VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy2'', and even non Mario games like ''Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda'', ''Franchise/MegaMan'', ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog1'', ''VideoGame/SuperMetroid'', ''VideoGame/SuperMonkeyBall'', and ''VideoGame/DonkeyKongCountry'' got on the bandwagon. These were often created just to annoy said [=LPers=]. Every single trap used in the original two games has been copied to no end. And it pretty much set up a difficulty arms race between quite a few people.
