* ActorAllusion: A few that often even crosses over NoFourthWall territory.
** One of the ''3Z Ginpachi Sensei'' omake has a funny one, in which Creator/TomokazuSugita tells about how he got a call from his mother after the Stand Inn arc was aired, telling him he really should work on his singing.
** In episode 65, Okita (voiced by Creator/KenichiSuzumura) says [[Series/KamenRiderDenO "Mind if I beat you? Can't hear your answer!" and his eyes flash purple.]]
** Episode 150 includes a frame-by-frame parody of a scene in ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion''. Hasegawa takes the place of Gendou Ikari, both of whom are voiced by Creator/FumihikoTachiki. He also, sometimes does some mannerisms as Gendou.
*** In episode 122, before he was revealed, the {{Eyecatch}} has his silhouette shaped like [[Manga/{{Bleach}} Kenpachi]]
** Hijitaka says [[VideoGame/SengokuBasara LET'S PARTY!]] in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxCr6svK_ZY in his introduction]] as hosts in the Takamagahara host club. The difference is, instead of a horse, Hijikata uses Kondo as his Harley Gorillason!
** Upon [[Creator/AyakoKawasumi Gedomaru]]'s arrival in episode 249, Gintoki yells "[[VisualNovel/FateStayNight Saber!]]".
** When [[Creator/YukoKaida Tsukuyo]] kicks Gintoki, Gintoki yells out "[[Anime/MobileSuitGundamUnicorn Kshatriya]]".
* AllStarCast: This was subverted in the anime's first few years, but nowadays (after a decade since the first episode's airing) the entire Japanese cast is normally composed of big names in the voice acting industry -- for starters, Creator/TomokazuSugita[[note]](Interestingly, it was Kyon who put him on the map... but both ''[[LightNovel/HaruhiSuzumiya The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya]]'' and ''Gintama'' came out in the same Spring 2006 anime season)[[/note]], Creator/RieKugimiya, Creator/DaisukeSakaguchi as the Yorozuya trio; and Creator/KazuyaNakai, Creator/KenichiSuzumura, Creator/SusumuChiba as the main Shinsengumi police. There's also veterans and new-rising stars getting regular or guest roles either as allies (such as Creator/FumikoOrikasa as Kyuubei, Creator/KeijiFujiwara as Hattori, or Creator/YukiOno as the Shogun Shigeshige), one-shot characters (Creator/MamikoNoto as Pandemonium) or villains (Creator/KazuhikoInoue as Oboro).
* CashCowFranchise: For Creator/{{Sunrise}} (and [=BNPictures=]). It leads to people to do not ''even'' believe when they say they are "stopping" or "finishing" the animated adaptation once in a while. ''Gintama'' is one of the best sold anime series on DVD in Japan and merchandise come and go because the franchise's popularity.
* CastingGag:
** Sunrise and the anime staff took the Renho arc's Gundam fight between Elizabeth and Dark Vader to the extreme, when they got Creator/ToruFuruya and Creator/ShuichiIkeda to voice each one, respectively, and when they made the battle to resemble the fight between Amuro Ray and Char Aznable in ''Anime/MobileSuitGundam''. Elizabeth even pilots the RX-78 Gundam!
** Kintoki, a perfect and opposite version of Gintoki, is voiced by [[Creator/TomokazuSugita Gintoki]]'s real-best friend, Creator/YuuichiNakamura.
** Creator/KenshoOno was invited to voice Kurokono Tasuke in the Joui Reunion arc, because he is the voice of Kuroko in ''Manga/KurokoNoBasuke''.
** The casting of GenderFlip Kondo makes more sense when you realize that [[Creator/ChiakiTakahashi Chiaking]] used to voice a genderflipped Kondo in [[Anime/SengokuCollection another anime.]]
** This isn't the first time Creator/TakahiroSakurai did the role as a Shinsengumi [[Manga/PeacemakerKurogane member]].
* CrossDressingVoices:
** Creator/YukoSanpei as Seita.
** Creator/MikakoTakahashi as TeamPet, Sadaharu (who is a male dog).
** During the Dekobokko arc, the only ones who retained their male voices when they are genderflipped are Hijikata (Creator/KazuyaNakai), and Yamazaki (Tetsuharu Ohta). Same could be said to Otose (Creator/{{Kujira}}) and Catherine (Creator/YuuSugimoto) when flipped to males.
* NoExportForYou:
** Creator/SentaiFilmworks has the first season of the series licensed, the series can be watched through Crunchyroll not only in the States, but many countries with the service as well, and the Benizakura-hen movie was also licensed and released with an English Dub... BUT, the other tons of episodes of ''Gintama'' can't be reached in home release form, and Creator/VizMedia cancelled the publishing of the series in Volume 23 for both low sales and because some translation difficulties (killing also the possible license of similar comedy series that rely mostly in the wordly dialogue and Japanese jokes and heavy words such as ''Manga/SketDance'', ''Manga/{{Beelzebub}}'' and ''[[Manga/ChounouryokushaSaikiKusuoNoSaiNan PSI Kusuo Saiki]]'').
** There are some exceptions in some countries where the anime has either been released dubbed (Spain, Mexico and the Philippines, for example) or the manga has been being published in its own right (Germany and Italy).
* OfficialFanSubmittedContent: The first half of episode 67 was based on the winning submission for a contest to create an Amanto character.
* TheOtherDarrin:
** Creator/TakeshiAono used to voiced Gengai up until his [[Main/AuthorExistenceFailure death]] in 2012. Starting in ''Enchousen'', he is now voiced by Creator/BinShimada.
* PlayingAgainstType: Creator/ShowHayami as Umibouzu, one of his few roles where he is not evil or a ManipulativeBastard, even though Umibouzu's morals (as a space hunter) are usually in the grey zone, except his love for his family.
* RealLifeRelative: In the Mexican Spanish dub, Gintoki and Catherine's voice actors (Creator/JesusBarrero and Banny Barrero respectively) are married in RealLife, not to mention Banny Barrero is also the voice director of that dub.
* RelationshipVoiceActor:
** Subverted with a CainAndAbel role where Creator/SatoshiHino is Kamui and Creator/RieKugimiya is Kagura.
** Played straight with Creator/TomokazuSugita and Creator/MikakoTakahashi as Gintoki and Sadaharu (or to a lesser extent Otsuu) where previously, they're the [[OfficialCouple Official Alpha Couple]] [[VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsAlpha Bullet and Kusuha]].
** While they are not exactly "rivals" as Gintoki and Kintoki, Creator/TomokazuSugita and Creator/YuuichiNakamura are real best friends.
** Played it straight at the Shinsengumi side since the Afro Arc, Okita (Creator/KenichiSuzumura) and Saitou (Creator/TakahiroSakurai) were once [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII Zack Fair and Cloud Strife]], respectively.
** This wouldn't be the first time where Sugita and Creator/KazuhikoInoue (Oboro) are against each other, until ''Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure'' Part 2 as Joseph Joestar and Kars, respectively.
* TalkingToHimself:
** LITERALLY. Both as an in-universe example and in real life, Gintoki and [[spoiler: the Leukocyte King.]]
** Episode 26 (or 227, depending on your point of view) has it when characters from ''Manga/SketDance'' meet the Yorozuya gang: Creator/TomokazuSugita as both Sakata Gintoki and Switch. It's [[NoFourthWall well pointed out]] in their correspondent crossover anime episodes, where EVERYONE (with the exception of [[Creator/RieKugimiya Kagura]]) talked with themselves. Yes, even Creator/RyokoShiraishi who got casted as the monkey (Jugem-monkey).
* ThrowItIn: When the initial title of "Yorozuya Gin-san" was rejected by Hideaki Sorachi's editor, another one was urgently needed. Expecting that his other ideas would be shot down too, Sorachi decided to play a little joke and submitted a random title his dad had made up: "''Gintama''".
* TrollingCreator: Sorachi is known as the greatest troll on the other side of Japan. There's even a special idiom for him, "Gorilla is playing with reader's crotch again."
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Hideaki Sorachi once wanted to do the series based on the Shinsengumi, and he is a declared fan of them. In fact, Shinpachi and Gintoki were once conceived as police units of the group. Hasegawa would eventually lead them (he was replaced by Kondo), and a girl who ended up being split into Okita (which original design was reused for his genderbent identity in the Dekobokko arc, ''nine'' years after the serialization started), and Kagura (her weapon was an umbrella, which became the defacto weapon for the Yato clan).
** The title of the manga was originally going to be "Yorozuya Gin-san", reflecting the nature of Gintoki's odd-jobs shop, but the editors of the magazine didn't like it, so it ended up being "Gintama".
** The "Be Forever Yorozuya" movie was originally stated for a release in Spring 2013, just after the anime new season (originally consisted of reruns, plus the airing of new such as the Kintama arc, and the Courtesan of the Nation arc) ended. However, as proved in the anime previews, the script seems to have suffered many changes in the process, making it move until a more proper release in Summer.
