* [[BannedInChina Banned in Germany]]: Whilst the first two games aren't exactly banned, Microsoft never submitted them to the USK since they wouldn't get the 16+ rating they were aiming for. Finally averted with ''Gears of War 3''.
* BTeamSequel: ''Gears of War: Judgment'' is the first title developed by People Can Fly rather than Epic.
* CrossdressingVoices: The Berserkers are actually voiced by Creator/DeeBradleyBaker.
* ExecutiveMeddling: Microsoft pushing the release date of ''Gears of War 3'' back five whole months from April 2011 to September 2011. It is arguably a positive example of meddling, members of Epic Games have said the delayed release gave them more time to refine the game, they would not have done a multiplayer beta if this had been released as scheduled and that helped polish everything to a spit shine.
* GameEngine: This is the first ''Unreal Engine 3'' game to be released, oddly enough NOT being an ''VideoGame/{{Unreal}}'' title or a PC game (initially) like the debut games for earlier engine versions. Early ''Unreal Engine 3'' tech demos from 2004 even used ''Gears Of War'' assets rather than ''VideoGame/{{Unreal}}'' ones. ''Gears of War'' was made largely as a demo for the engine, with each succeeding game further enhancing it's capabilities. It's worked well, as several very popular games have been made with the engine.
* MythologyGag: [[http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100721183360/gearsofwar/images/1/1f/Claycarmine.jpg Clayton Carmine]] is a big one to his decreased younger brother Anthony. In ''Gears of War'', Anthony was killed by sniper fire after standing up to display his issue with his Lancer assault rifle jamming constantly as he reloaded it. To list how Clayton's design references it, "Practice reloading" and "Keep your head down" are written on his armor. If that wasn't enough, a mark on his helmet implies he was shot in the head but survived anyway.
** Clayton honors the memory of the two fallen Carmine brothers with a memorial tattoo on his arm [[TheFaceless of their helmets]].
** ''Gears of War 3'' is ''filled'' with these.
*** The tier 4 medal for interacting with objects during the campaign (i.e. hitting buttons) references Lieutenant Minh Young Kim's oft-repeated line in the first game of "I'll open the door; I've got the code."
*** A player using Dominic Santiago will sometimes hear him repeat one of his earliest lines from ''Gears of War'', "This is gonna be awesome!"
*** After killing a COG character, Queen Myrrah will sometimes reference a line from the ''Gears of War 2'' opening cinematic, "You brought this upon yourselves!"
*** Early in the first game, after first meeting Augustus Cole, Dom and Marcus talk about when they saw him play. Marcus will quip "I remember you owe me 20 bucks" to which Dom replies "Yeah? See me after the war." One of the first collectibles in the third game is a 20-dollar bill on Marcus' desk with a note from Dom.
*** After Delta Squad hijacks a Gas Barge, they find Dizzy hunkered down in a supply depot holding out against the Locust. Marcus asks if Dizzy is "taking on the grub army single-handedly again." Dizzy replies with "I guess I shoulda learned my lesson against Skorge."
*** If you can manage to get through a round of Gridlock without anyone destroying one of the ash people, the next round will begin with an instrumental version of Gary Jules' cover of "[[Music/TearsForFears Mad World]]", the same song used for the ''Gears of War'' commercial. [[spoiler: It's also the music that plays during Dom's HeroicSacrifice]].
*** "[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZ73YHx15jA Who wants toast?!]]" makes a comeback in ''Gears of War 3'' as one of Marcus' one-liners when throwing an incendiary grenade.
** ''Gears of War 2'' has no shortage of them either, even though it only has one game to CallBack to. "This is the part where he tells you he'll take it under advisement." and "Hey, Colonel, I guess we ARE the support, huh?!" come to mind. Also, the entire time you're with Benjamin Carmine in the Hollow, Dom doesn't stop making stealthy quips about Anthony, while Marcus tells him to [[DudeNotFunny knock it off]].
** ''Gears of War 4'' has one gameplay trailer where Marcus and his son JD's squad take shelter in Marcus' greenhouse, which is then ambushed by [=DeeBees=]. The second the bullets start flying, Marcus angrily shouts "Shit, they're gonna fuck up my tomatoes!", calling back to the first level in ''Gears of War 3'' in which the Lambent attack the Sovereign and Dom shouts "You fucked up my tomatoes, you assholes!"
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: The series staple, the Lancer/Chainsaw Bayonet, was on the edge of whether it was going to be actually included in the game. It wasn't until they devised the design of it being integrated into the grip that they devised a semi-plausible chainsaw mounted assault rifle. Somewhere, a group of StopHavingFunGuys who want everyone to only use the Gnasher are cursing their rotten luck.
** When playing through Beast Mode in Gears of War 3, one will notice that there are 5 empty spaces in the Locust selection interface. Indeed, there were originally 20 playable creatures to choose from in the mode. Early beta footage showed that the Grenadier Elite was playable; most likely cut for playing identically to the Savage Grenadier, so it was unnecessary to include both grenadiers. The footage also showed that Grinders were originally playable as well; most likely cut for being too easy to sit in the back of the maps and pick off humans from a distance since Beast encourages players to get close to the action. Also, Grinders don't possess melee attacks, so they would have no reliable way to kill Hero units and Onyx Guards. In addition, Reavers were also playable as well. They were stated to have been cut due to the developers having issues with them fitting on the smaller and indoor maps like Checkout and Rustlung. However, since Reavers are very large, it was also probably overpowered since you could potentially just launch rockets over the scenery to get easy kills while bypassing the fortifications. Another minor one, but the Armored Kantus was also shown DualWielding Boltok pistols in beta footage, but was changed to dual Gorgons. Sadly, it is unknown what the other 2 cut creatures were.
* TheOtherDarrin: Jace goes from having an Australian-sounding voice in his cameo in ''Gears of War 2'' to being played by Michael B. Jordan in ''Gears of War 3''.
* TheOtherMarty: As shown in this [[http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-feature/2015/02/02-1/feature-interview-with-voice-actor-christopher-sabat interview]], Creator/ChristopherSabat recorded lines for Marcus Fenix in ''VideoGame/GearsOfWar2'' during the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007%E2%80%9308_Writers_Guild_of_America_strike 200708 Writers Guild of America strike]] that affected the LA {{unions|in Hollywood}} (thus having the game be moved over to Texas for voice recording due to its non-union environment, effectively bypassing the union-related issues) [[note]]As he's a Texas-based actor[[/note]] until the game was moved back to LA to be recorded once the strike ended.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: In hindsight, knocking the Corpser into Imulsion probably wasn't the greatest idea. Good thing the Lightmass Bomb took care of it.
** Players hacking into an FPS made by Creators/EpicGames Shanghai, ''Passion Leading Army'', discovered [[http://tieba.baidu.com/p/1940077425?pid=25550992197&cid=0#25550992197 scripts]] of ''GOW2'' that indicated the developement had already went into advanced stages.
