* CastOfExpies: Most of the major characters in this are fulfilling a role similar to that in ''Film/EscapeFromNewYork''.
** Cuervo Jones -> The Duke
** Map To The Stars Eddie -> Cabbie
** Carjack Malone/Hershe Las Palmas -> Brain
** Malloy -> Bob Hauk
** In fact, the only major character who isn't an {{Expy}} is Snake.
* DeletedScene: Several scenes were shot but only appeared in the marketing campaign or revealed to have been shot by crew members, including:
** A conversation between Malloy, Brazen and the President where they discuss Snake's psychological history. The conversation appeared in the trailer but wasn't present in the final product.
** There was intended to be a scene where Snake would be caught in a mudslide and pulled down to the bottom of a hill soon after he arrived on the island that isn't present in the final film. It did appear in pre-release promotional footage, however.
** According to production assistant Mauritz Pavoni, there was intended to be a scene where Snake encountered a hooker when he arrived at Hollywood Boulevard. The sequence was shot, but has never been released.
** There was intended to ba a ''much'' longer conversation between Snake and Cuervo Jones in the basement of the L.A. Memorial Coliseum that would have set up the ending (Cuervo remarks that the Sword of Damocles can be used to disable the whole world's defenses, along with giving more backstory for "Test Tube" (the hacker working for Cuervo) and setting up the gang member who steals Snake's jacket. It was featured prominently in behind-the-scenes materials and promotional trailers, but was not included in the final product. A subsequent scene with Utopia realizing that Cuervo isn't as heroic as she thought him to be, as well as the Mescalitos pulling Snake to his feet and hauling him out (in an apparent homage to the original film) was shot according to actor William Luduena, but never included proper in the film.
* DyeingForYourArt: Averted. It was expected that Creator/KurtRussell would have to work out or a new costume would have to be made for the actor because it had been 15 years since ''Film/EscapeFromNewYork''. As it turned out, Russell kept himself in such good shape that the original costume fit without needing any alterations.
* RealLifeRelative: One of the orphans seen early on in the film is, in fact, Creator/KurtRussell's own son, Wyatt.
* SequelGap: The first movie ''Film/EscapeFromNewYork'' was released in 1981. It took 15 years but ''Escape From LA'' was finally released in 1996.
* UnintentionalPeriodPiece: Just as its predecessor was this to the early '80s when UsefulNotes/NewYorkCity and other old East Coast/Midwestern cities were seen as [[TheBigRottenApple trapped in an intractable downward spiral]], so is this film to the late '90s, when UsefulNotes/LosAngeles' public image had taken a beating in the wake of [[PoliceBrutality the Rodney King riots, the Rampart scandal]], and the rise of GangstaRap. The PresidentEvil of the dystopian near-future United States is a [[TheFundamentalist Christian theocrat]] based on Jerry Falwell (right down to them sharing the same hometown of Lynchburg, Virginia), reflecting public concern over the power of the [[MoralGuardians Christian Right]] at the time. The villain Cuervo Jones is a member of the Shining Path, a Peruvian communist revolutionary group that, in the film, has taken over all of Latin America and is poised to [[InvadedStatesOfAmerica invade the US]]; in real life, the Shining Path was already being rolled up by the Peruvian military by 1996, and is largely disorganized today. There's even a joke made at the expense of Euro Disney Resort, with one character claiming that it drove Creator/{{Disney}} into bankruptcy. On the other hand, the fact that one of the minor characters is a woman who was dumped onto the Los Angeles prison island for being a Muslim proved [[HarsherInHindsight eerily prescient]], given how TheWarOnTerror stoked anti-Muslim attitudes throughout the US and Europe.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** The first chase scene where Snake goes after Cuervo was intended to be much longer, according to the original script. It would have included more footage of Snake taking down bikers, using a chain to knock a biker off his vehicle and fighting Cuervo on the roof of a car before being knocked off. It was eventually changed to a simplified version by the time shooting commenced.
** In the original script Taslima was explicitly a BrainlessBeauty (''"the face of a Persian princess...and basically has an IQ of around 50"'' as the script puts it.)
** More footage where Snake and Taslima escaped the plastic surgery freaks was intended, including a sequence where they escaped as the freaks wielded weapons and tried to have a standoff. The escape sequence was shortened to a shot of the duo breaking a window and escaping, according to assistant director Christian Penna.
** According to visual effects supervisor Michael Lessa, several shots were intended to be filmed that would have filled out the flight Snake, Hershe and her team take to ambush Cuervo Jones. These included a dancing woman who would be performing as Snake and the rest of the group fly by, along with a group of vagrants looking up at the passing hang-gliders and a family (eating dinner within an abandoned skyscraper) waving at Snake as he flies by. Due to scheduling constraints, none of these elements were filmed, with the exception of the dancing woman, which was filmed but never had its effects completed.
** Snake was originally intended to be set on fire as the government chopper crashed, forcing him to execute a duck-and-roll in order to extinguish the flames. This was changed in the final script to simply cut to him limping away from the wreckage while it burns behind him.
** The script originally ended differently. While Snake learned that the Plutoxin virus was a fake and Utopia is seized and sent to the electric chair, the President doesn't televise his threat to stop the Cuban incursion force headed to Miami. Malloy and the President pardon Snake and allow him to walk free, and he discovers the real prototype (having been thrown away by the President when he thought it was a decoy) and activates the world code. As the power goes out in the area, all of the gangs in L.A. besiege the security base and start to scale the wall, rescuing Utopia from the electric chair before attacking police officers. The film would have ended with Snake watching the carnage before RidingIntoTheSunset.
* WrittenByCastMember: Creator/KurtRussell served as co-writer. The ending was his idea.
