[[folder:A-D]]
* ActingForTwo:
** Raven vs. Twilight Sparkle has both characters voiced by Creator/KiraBuckland (possibly as a nod to both characters being originally voiced by Creator/TaraStrong).
** Red VS Blue has Church and Lopez, both voiced by Burnie Burns.
** Both Gogeta and Vegito were voiced by both Creator/MichaelKovach and Creator/{{Lanipator}}, as the two are fusions of Goku and Vegeta.
** ''Scooby-Doo vs. Courage the Cowardly Dog'' has Billy B. Burson III voice both Scooby-Doo and [[spoiler:Eustace]].
* AdoredByTheNetwork: Very much adored by [=ScrewAttack=]'s former holding company, Fullscreen, to the point of merging [=ScrewAttack=]'s Hard News with Rooster Teeth's so [=ScrewAttack=] could focus on more DEATH BATTLE! [=ScrewAttack=] has since shut down and rebranded as DEATH BATTLE!
* ApprovalOfGod:
** Tom Taylor, writer of Superior Iron Man ''and'' writer of Lex Luthor, [[https://twitter.com/TomTaylorMade/status/593489449633320962 wholeheartedly approves of Iron Man vs. Lex Luthor.]]
** Unsurprisingly, Creator/GregWeisman, creator of WesternAnimation/{{Gargoyles}} [[https://twitter.com/Greg_Weisman/status/602353723935850496 approves of Beast vs. Goliath.]]
** Likewise, Creator/HidekiKamiya originally [[https://twitter.com/PG_kamiya/status/703945560613474305 approved]] of the Death Battle between his creations Dante and Bayonetta. Ben Singer even retweeted Kamiya's response, but has since taken it down. Unfortunately, [[https://twitter.com/PG_kamiya/status/704128740398215168 it lead to]] Kamiya tweeting in very strong disapproval of the battle not soon after. Allegedly, he prefers to see the two team up rather than fight. Not only that, he's [[BerserkButton frustrated]] at the large amount of tweets he gets from fans about who would win, despite how he isn't directly involved with either character at this point.[[labelnote:note]]He's only interested in talking about their debut games, which he personally directed. He wasn't involved in later ''Devil May Cry'' games, and only supervised the production of ''Bayonetta 2''. Also, he absolutely hates being asked the same question more than once.[[/labelnote]] The day Dante vs. Bayonetta hit [=YouTube=], Kamiya labeled the battle as [[https://twitter.com/PG_kamiya/status/710117717097877504 garbage]].
** Insomniac Games [[https://twitter.com/insomniacgames/status/725830317303468032 approves of Ratchet & Clank vs Jak & Daxter.]]
** Creator/MontyOum had enthusiastically talked with Wiz and Boomstick about the possibility of characters from WebAnimation/{{RWBY}} showing up in the show, fully knowing that they might lose. Unfortunately, his untimely passing prevented him from seeing it come about. As it was, they did get Yang's voice actress in for the first episode.
** While more of a FlatWhat than approval, Bryan Lee O'Malley [[https://twitter.com/radiomaru/status/782072846449201152 dropped a tweet]] about Ramona's announcement for her bout with Amy. Due to his account being suspended, however, it's no-longer viewable.
** The team behind the VideoGame/{{Crysis}} games [[https://twitter.com/Crysis/status/808686325603962881 approves the DBX between Predator and Prophet]]
** A downplayed example, but Omega Sparx, one of the people behind TJ Combo's theme song "I'm Back (To Rise)", [[https://twitter.com/OmegaSparx/status/898718344869691392 tweeted his approval of Balrog VS T.J. Combo.]]
** Maile Flanagan joked on Twitter with Johnny Yong Bosch that Naruto would obviously win between him and Ichigo.
** Creator/ChuckHuber (Hiei's official English voice) [[https://twitter.com/Chuck_Huber/status/1176237436596342786?s=20 commented]] on Sasuke vs Hiei (before it came out) saying the fight better end with Hiei winning. [[spoiler: It did.]]
** Creator/ButchHartman commented [[https://twitter.com/realhartman/status/1257425716351774722 his approval]] when he found out Danny Phantom would be a combatant, drew [[https://www.twitter.com/realhartman/status/1260256345908903936?s=21 a fanart]] of the fight, and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4YIQ_POds4 made a video of his own regarding the fight]].
** Austin St. John, the original actor for Jason Lee Scott (who's also a fan of Leonardo), [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZPUXKL1wRs made a reaction to Leonardo vs Jason]].
** The Popeye Official account on Twitter [[https://twitter.com/PopeyeTweetsk/status/1471262924379410435 made a post commenting on Saitama vs Popeye]], mentioning that Popeye was "notsk worried intsk the slightestsk". [[https://twitter.com/PopeyeTweetsk/status/1473762514160734219 Another tweet was made after the battle was posted,]] [[spoiler:with Popeye admitting that Saitama put up a good fight, but in the end, he "really ams strong to the finich!"]]
** When Omni-Man VS Homelander was announced, the Offical Twitter accounts for both ''Series/TheBoys2019'' and ''WesternAnimation/{{Invincible|2021}}'' made [[https://twitter.com/TheBoysTV/status/1523822742188920833 a post]] [[https://twitter.com/InvincibleHQ/status/1523806837761404928 in response]] to the matchup being revealed on Twitter in relation to both of their opponents. Based on their responses, ''both'' are expecting Omni-Man to [[CurbStompBattle destroy Homelander]]. [[spoiler:They were right.]]
* AscendedFanon:
** Moreso than usual. According to Ben, the large majority of matchups are suggested by fans, rather than Ben's and Chad's ideas.
** Many community written battles [[labelnote:note]]mainly found on Deviantart [[/labelnote]] were made before the matchup became an episode of the show.
* AudienceParticipation:
** In the first Season, Ben Singer put out a poll asking fans whether they wanted [[VideoGame/{{Battletoads}} Zitz]] or the [[Series/MightyMorphinPowerRangers White Ranger]] to fight against the winner of the TMNT Battle Royale. In the end, Zitz won the poll and he was pitted against Leonardo.
** Starting in Season 10, there is at least one winning matchup that was added as a result of winning a fan poll exclusive to those with ''DEATH BATTLE'' membership. The polls for Season 10 was done for two matchups — one done in 2D animation and one done in 3D. The polling for Season 11 was changed to a tournament bracket with the winning matchup being the sole episode guaranteed for the season. The winners of the Season 10 poll were [[WesternAnimation/GravityFalls Bill Cipher]] VS [[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic Discord]] for 2D and [[VideoGame/InFamous Cole MacGrath]] VS [[VideoGame/{{Prototype}} Alex Mercer]] for 3D, both of which being among the most highly requested matchups in the show's history.
* AuthorsSavingThrow:
** Shortly after Goku VS Superman came out, [[Anime/DragonBallZBattleOfGods two]] [[Anime/DragonBallZResurrectionF new]] DBZ movies were released, giving Goku a substantial power boost. Wiz and Boomstick commissioned the second-ever rematch after their remake of Boba Fett VS Samus Aran to explain why Goku still loses. They also tried to smooth things over with upset fans by having the fighters respect each other during the match, [[spoiler:especially at the end when [[ApologeticAttacker Superman apologizes]] for lobotomizing Goku and gently catches his body before it hits the ground.]] The post-battle analysis also reminds viewers why these characters are so well loved by what they represent and believe. Goku is a man who can break any limit and overcome any challenge with strength, determination, and his "never give up" attitude. Superman represents wisdom, goodwill, restraint with power, and idealism about truth and justice all should seek.
** In the earlier seasons, many fans disliked the show's habit of revealing only one combatant while withholding their opponent's identity to plug their social media instead. After showing ComicBook/GreenArrow would appear next, Chad shows ComicBook/{{Hawkeye}} as his opponent, clearly aware of their obvious choice. They also revealed Charizard's fight against Agumon after that fight, along with a hype-inducing video package with both of them in top form. As the last such preview was when Iron Man fought Lex Luthor, it was a welcome surprise. The show took a hiatus from doing that until Meta and Carolina's fight revealed the match between Cammy and Sonya with an additional preview of the animation. Starting with Natsu's fight with Ace in Season 4, showing both fighters has become standard.
** In Thor's first appearance, Wiz incorrectly claims Mjolnir comes from a dying star's material. When Thor returns, Wiz clarifies how Mjolnir is a magic-sensitive metal called Uru merely ''forged in'' a dying star.
** Yang defeating Tifa has always been controversial among the fandom. Many people believe she only won because Creator/RoosterTeeth owns both this show and ''WebAnimation/{{RWBY}}''. In Season 8's [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1QJ_mvCQp mid-season Q&A]] following the Link vs. Cloud rematch, Ben admitted how based on their current rules, Tifa would almost certainly win a rematch if they ever did one.
** As of Season 6, Wiz no longer says, "Let's end this debate once and for all!" Instead, he now says, "We've run the data through all possibilities." Instead of implying they're the gospel for VS debating, the current wording merely proclaims their careful judgment.
** Green Lantern defeating Ben 10 is ''the'' objectively most controversial result in the show's history, possessing barely over 50% likes. Most of the flak came from the lackluster, uncreative animation and the ''extremely'' poorly written analysis, where Wiz and Boomstick come off as biased for dismissing all of Ben's options. To remedy the criticism, the hosts made an [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQujpsgd428 hour-long Q&A]] where they addressed everything they neglected to mention in the episode.
** Season 7 got some heavy flak for having ''thirteen'' characters from Creator/DCComics and Creator/MarvelComics. Its touted 20 episode length (as opposed to a regular season's 16) was also criticized for this reason, as half of those episodes featured a Marvel or DC character in them. Season 8 cut the number down to six, introduced plenty of new series to the show, and had several ''highly'' requested matchups rather than simply shoehorning in another comic superhero. Meanwhile, Season 9 only had two Marvel vs DC episodes (Scarlet Witch VS Zatanna and Black Adam VS Apocalypse).
* AwesomeDearBoy:
** Creator/ChristopherSabat reportedly did the role of Solid Snake for free solely because he's always wanted to portray the character.
** The Yang vs. Tifa battle was done not only because Screw Attack is friends with Rooster Teeth, but also to celebrate Season 3 of ''WebAnimation/{{RWBY}}''.
** Creator/AustinLeeMatthews voiced Po in "Iron Fist VS Po", who he had always wanted to voice as Po is his favorite character.
* ContentLeak:
** ''Genos vs War Machine'' was uploaded to ''Creator/{{VRV}}'' half a day before the official release for FIRST members. As ''VRV'' allows free trials, the fight as well as the next time, ''Gray vs Esdeath'' was leaked.
** An anonymous poster known as "Voiceanon" on [[Website/FourChan 4Chan]] posted spoilers around the time of ''Wally vs Sonic'''s pre-release, saying who the fight's victor was, revealing the existence of the ''Seven Battle Royale'', ''Jon Talbain vs Sabrewulf'', and ''Sanji vs Rock Lee'' episodes, and hinting at the ''Red vs Blue'' fight well before they were announced.
** The day before the fight it was tied with for its reveal (''Steven Universe vs. Star Butterfly'') was released publicly, ''Link vs. Cloud'' (2021) was spoiled when the title and description of the original 2012 video was altered to point towards the release date of the rematch.
** A few days before it was officially revealed, the track for ''Black Adam VS Apocalypse'' was posted on Brandon Yates' channel by accident, though the video was quickly removed after a couple hours.
* CreatorBacklash:
** Due to their lackluster quality and subsequent negative reception, the Trish vs. Jeanne, Spider-Man vs. Mikasa, Spawn vs. Alucard, and Saitama vs. Kenshiro DBX episodes have been de-listed from Website/YouTube.
** For the main show, Ben has stated that he considers Justin Bieber vs. Rebecca Black and Bomberman vs. Dig Dug to be episodes that he personally regrets (the former for being incredibly petty against real people, and the latter on the grounds of him feeling that the match-up felt random in hindsight, although he thought it was still a fun episode).
** As revealed in an episode of the Death Battle Cast[[labelnote:note]]''Jurassic World: Kingdom Hearts''[[/labelnote]], Ben doesn't feel like any of the Season 1 episodes have held up well in hindsight (aside from ''Goku vs. Superman'', which he personally feels was the series' GrowingTheBeard moment). This is not due to disagreeing with the outcomes or the match-ups themselves, but due to how the rundowns feel very rushed in terms of presentation (not research), owing largely to how short the episodes were back then[[labelnote:note]]Back when Season 1 was in production, Ben was told to keep the episodes as short as was feasibly possible due to the way that [=YouTube=]'s algorithms worked at the time[[/labelnote]].
** During his ''[[https://roosterteeth.com/post/51844775 Road to 100]]'' Blog[[labelnote:note]]Which has been archived [[https://deathbattle.fandom.com/wiki/User_blog:Oshawott777/Road_to_100_Archive:_Goku_vs_Superman here]][[/labelnote]], Ben admitted that, in his eyes, ''Goku vs. Superman 2'' was his personal least-favorite episode (he refrained from mentioning it alongside the aforementioned Justin Bieber vs. Rebecca Black and Bomberman vs. Dig Dug because of how easy it would be to take it out of context). The reason for this is not because of the episode's content, premise, or outcome, but rather how it was advertised-- the episode was advertised as a rematch, but in his eyes it was supposed to serve as an extension of the original episode (the script for the original ''Goku vs. Superman'' was significantly trimmed down as the episode was already incredibly long) while also answering fan requests for Goku to fight Superman with his then-new Super Saiyan God form, and '''not''' a complete re-examination of both characters. As a result, he considers the episode to be "akin to an unintentional and completely unnecessary kick in the nuts to the Dragon Ball audience". Fittingly, when ''Goku vs. Superman 3'' was announced, ''Goku vs. Superman 2'' was given the subtitle "The Irrelevant Sequel".
** The creators have openly regretted the killing blow of ''Ben 10 VS Green Lantern'' multiple times. Due to the various factors that led into the fight's result being called into question (mostly about how Ben was the fan favorite to win) in addition to the power level of both characters being utterly absurd to the point the death being a kill via time travel for Hal to take Ben out at his weakest was seen as a cop out, they have come around to stating a more obvious ending to prove Hal's more decisive win would have been more appropriate.
* CreatorsFavorite: Ben admitted that [[Franchise/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles Donatello]] and the original Franchise/{{Gundam}} were some of his favorites in the series. Ironically enough, they got some of the most brutal deaths, with Donny getting stabbed repeatedly by Raph and the Gundam getting hit with a blast strong enough to destroy Saturn.
* CreatorsOddball: While not the most unusual episode DEATH BATTLE! has ever done, having made Justin Bieber VS Rebecca Black during its first season, the death battle between Sun Wukong and Heracles is the first death battle to feature opponents straight from real-world mythology, not from any novels, comics, movies, manga, or anime.
* DearNegativeReader: It's clear Wiz and Boomstick are tired of the backlash "Goku vs. Superman" generates. On the Sidescrollers'[[note]]Another show that was on the old [=ScrewAttack=] site[[/note]] episode "Reactionary Reaction", Chad (Boomstick) spends 10+ minutes thoroughly disproving and counteracting commonly used arguments seen in the comments/emails/private messages, reminds them of the rules of ''Death Battle'', explains the fight is nothing more than a dramatization of what they think would go down in the fight, not what it determines, and for "Entertainment purposes only", and how neither of them are Superman fanboys. Chad then tells them to [[MST3KMantra stop taking the show so seriously.]]
* DescendedCreator: Liam Swan, the show's lead researcher, has voiced plenty of characters on the show starting with Spider in a Top Hat in ''Steven Universe vs. Star Butterfly''.
* DevelopmentHell: The most requested match, "Son Goku vs. Superman", began production early in the series, according to Wiz, for 2.5 years. It was scheduled for release on December 21, 2012, then it was delayed to later in December, then the animator confirmed that it wouldn't be released before January 2013. On January 6th, Wiz announced that the episode would be released later in the week, according to the animator. It was finally released on January 10th between 8 and 9pm EST.

[[folder:E-P]]
* EasterEgg: From ''Thanos vs. Darkseid'' to ''All Might vs. Might Guy'', each 3D fight has a hidden reference to the previous one:
** Thanos vs Darkseid: has Optimus Prime's truck form roll down the street when Thanos uses the Reality Gem.
** Black Widow vs. Widowmaker has Darkseid's omega symbol on the license plate of a taxi.
** Weiss vs. Mitsuru has a statue of Black Widow seen when Artemisia trips up the Arma Gigas with her whip.
** Dragonzord vs. Mechagodzilla has [[https://twitter.com/CaptainsLantern/status/1169358024508493824 Mitsuru's picture]] in Akane's cockpit as she crashes.
** Ganondorf vs. Dracula has Kiryu can be seen latching onto a statue after Ganondorf transforms into Ganon and takes a step.
** All Might vs. Might Guy has Dracula's demon form briefly pops up when All Might makes Saitama's "OK" face.
** Goro vs. Machamp has All Might and Dragonzord's heads in the background as golden trophies.
* ExecutiveMeddling: According to Ben's ''Road to 100'' blog posts, a large part of Season 1 was hit with this from [=ScrewAttack=] themselves, from him being told he had to keep the episodes under 10 minutes in length, he couldn't use money to hire voice actors or new animators, or even opposing the making of the Starscream vs. Rainbow Dash episode.
* FandomNod: The Death Battle team puts in small jokes and references to the characters' original series:
** In the TMNT Battle Royal, Donatello stands safely on top of a pile of boxes as he hits Leo over the head with his staff, which is a reference [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6J5c9Qt5hjE&t=0m39s to an exploit in the first NES TMNT game]] in which Donatello could easily beat the first boss, Rocksteady.
** When Starscream [[WoundedGazelleGambit pretends to beg for mercy]], Rainbow Dash wonders aloud if she should "[[https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/bronyspeak love and tolerate]]" him instead, a reference to a rebuttal bronies would say to trolls in the early days of the fandom.
** One of the combos Sol [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lQxaLuoghc&t=11m11s does on Ragna]] is his infamous [[https://www.dustloop.com/wiki/index.php?title=Dustloop_Wiki:About Dustloop]].
** At one point in his second battle, Doctor Doom [[https://youtu.be/jXYVQfmYhPk?t=932 repeatedly uses his infamous Foot Dive]] from the ''VideoGame/MarvelVSCapcom'' series on Lex Luthor, to the point of even being part of a combo.
* HarpoDoesSomethingFunny:
** Sort of. The hosts mention that while most of what they use are borrowed assets, sometimes Luis [=(CVAnimations)=] will make his own custom sprites if it suits the fight.
** In the script for Ghost Rider vs. Lobo, Liam wrote that Lobo’s bounty was just a purple alien. The animators decided that said purple alien would be [[UsefulNotes/McDonalds Grimace.]]
* InMemoriam: The Boba Fett VS Samus Aran Remastered was dedicated to Creator/MontyOum, whose work inspired Death Battle.
* InspirationForTheWork: ''DEATH BATTLE!'' was inspired by ''Series/DeadliestWarrior'' and online debates including Goku vs Superman, which became an episode, as confirmed by Ben Singer.
* KeepCirculatingTheTapes:
** Starscream vs. Rainbow Dash Remastered was removed from the [=RoosterTeeth=] website.
** Ragna Vs Sol, after being blocked on Website/YouTube, was blocked on [=ScrewAttack=]'s website as well; only [=ScrewAttack=] staff had access to it. It's currently now available on [=YouTube=] again.
** Boba Fett VS Samus Aran Remastered with the song Shine from WebAnimation/{{RWBY}} was removed by [=ScrewAttack=] and replace with one with the song removed. Only some videos that recorded the video with the song are on [=YouTube=].
** Beerus vs Sailor Galaxia is currently copyright claimed on [=YouTube=]. While the fight animation itself would be reuploaded, the only ways to watch the full episode are either via [=RoosterTeeth=], its commentary, or with various reactors.
* MeaningfulReleaseDate:
** "Goku vs Superman," which was advertised as fulfilling a prophecy [[spoiler: and which ends with an EarthShatteringKaboom]] was originally slated to release on December 21, 2012 -- the end of the Mayan calendar and [[MayanDoomsday believed by superstitious people to be the day of the apocalypse]].
** Both of Vegeta's battles (against Shadow and Thor) were released on May 9, which is considered Goku Day (due to [[GoroawaseNumber how 5 and 9 can be pronounced "Go" and "Ku" in Japanese]]) or Piccolo Day (due to May 9 being when King Piccolo announced his rule of Earth).
** Jason Vorhees VS Michael Myers was released on October 31, fittingly on Halloween. Interestingly, it was also the thirteenth episode on Season 9.
** Gogeta VS Vegito was released on December 21st, marking ten years since Goku VS Superman was originally supposed to release on that date.
** Stitch's preview for Stitch VS Rocket battle was released on June 26, or rather, [[YouAreNumberSix 6/26]].
* MilestoneCelebration: Whenever Death Battle reaches a certain point [[note]] Every 25 episodes [[/note]] they tend to do a heavily requested episode to celebrate. So far, there have been six milestone episodes and one celebratory season:
** Goku vs. Superman, a matchup that was apparently planned from the start, was chosen to be the season 1 finale and be Death Battle's 25th matchup.
** For episode 50, Goku vs Superman 2 was done as the first ever rematch though WordOfGod is that it was meant to be a continuation of the first episode and it being advertised as a rematch was a result of Death Battle being ScrewedByTheNetwork.
** Power Rangers vs. Voltron was chosen to be the 75th episode of Death Battle.
** For episode 100, Mario vs. Sonic was done as the first intentional rematch of Death Battle. Though according to WordOfGod, the season 5 finale (Thanos vs. Darkseid) is a more heavily requested match-up and Mario vs. Sonic was chosen to show how far Death Battle has come since season 1.
** Episode 125 turned out to be Goro vs. Machamp in what is one of the most well-animated battles in the show's history (more information can be found at the [[VisualEffectsOfAwesome/DeathBattle the show's visual effects of awesome page]]).
** Season 8 and its component episodes as a whole serve as one for Death Battle's [[LongRunner 10 year anniversary]].
** Episode 150, which is part of Season 8, happens to be a hand-drawn matchup between Wrestling/RandySavage and the Kool-Aid Man. This episode is quite different from almost every other so far, as it is more of a story-based episode than simply a standard one that focuses on the combatants. Rather, the main focus of the episode is the conclusion of the "Boomstick's dad" arc, where the identity is confirmed here. Uniquely compared to the other milestone episodes, the idea for this episode actually originated from a joke suggestion from Chad during the show's early days. It's also the first episode to feature stop-motion animation.
* TheOriginalDarrin: Goku has been voiced by Creator/MichaelKovach ever since Season 8 as Goku Black and reprises as the voice of Death Battle's "Main" Goku for Goku vs. Superman 3. Creator/MasakoX however briefly reprises his role as "Other Goku" fighting another version of Superman. Similarly, Creator/XanderMobus plays the "Main" Superman for the Episode, while Michael Agrusso plays an "Other Superman" that briefly appears fighting Goku Black.
* TheOtherDarrin:
** Sonic the Hedgehog's return in Season 5 has him voiced by Nicholas Andrew Louie instead of Caden Redpearl.
** Tommy Oliver's return in Season 6 has him voiced by Nicholas Andrew Louie instead of Creator/ChrisNiosi, presumably due to controversies surrounding Niosi earlier that summer.
** Caboose in Season 7 was voiced by Michael Malconian instead of Joel Heyman due to the latter being laid off by Rooster Teeth in November 2019.
** Hulk's return in Season 7 has him voiced by Richard Barcenas instead of Parker Bohon.
** Shadow the Hedgehog's return in Season 8 has him voiced by Creator/BrendanBlaber instead of Curtis Arnott, who had voiced Shadow in Seasons 1 and 3. This was justified as wanting to capture Shadow's voice as it sounded from ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations'' onwards, contrasting with how previous fights depicted him closer to his appearances in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'' and ''Anime/SonicX''.
** Iron Man's return in Season 8 has him voiced by Reagan Murdock instead of Creator/ChuckHuber.
** Goku and Goku Black are voiced by Creator/MichaelKovach instead of Creator/MasakoX after the latter voiced Goku in his battles against Superman.
** Saitama is voiced by Ryan Abedi in his appearance in ''DEATH BATTLE!'', rather than Creator/AlejandroSaab who voiced him in DBX.
** Raiden's return in Season 9 has him voiced by Mornal instead of Tim Paige.
** Superman's return in Season 10 against Goku sees him voiced by Creator/XanderMobus instead of Michael Agrusso.
* PreviewPiggybacking: Mega Man VS Astro Boy was announced during the season finale of ''The Industry''.
* PropRecycling: The belt Red Hood uses to activate the EMP is the same one Nightwing used for the Ultrasonic Wingding.
* PromotedFanboy: Several of the voice actors were big fans of Death Battle ''and'' the characters they got to voice.
** Xander Mobus grew up with Thundercats; when voicing Lion-O, he happily proclaimed that he "made his inner 7-year old giddy".
** Kirbopher is a huge Power Rangers fan, even creating [[WebAnimation/SuperFreakinParodyRangers a well-known flash parody of the series.]] You can imagine his enjoyment at being able to voice the White Ranger himself.
** Electricstar of ''WebAnimation/ZePyromancers'' is a frequent editor of Website/ThisVeryWiki pages of ''Death Battle'' and an aspiring voice actor; needless to say, he was ''very'' excited when he landed the role of Saba.
** Stuart Schlomach, voice of Zechs Merquise, was a big fan of the show long before getting the chance to voice in it.
** Inverted with Creator/MarissaLenti, the voice of Noin (in addition to Pepper Potts in ''Iron Man vs Lex Luthor'', months later), she didn't know about the show until Ben was directed to her talents scouting for auditions. After she discovered the show, she quickly became a fan and is now a real life friend (and girlfriend) of Ben Singer, according to her Twitter page.
** The OFDBFB became official researchers for the show as of May 19th, even signing an NDA to directly communicate with the people at [=ScrewAttack=].
** Danny Shepherd of Ismahawk is a fan of Death Battle, even saying Power Rangers vs Voltron is his [[https://twitter.com/DannyLaShep/status/852226363675234304 favorite episode so far]]. He would later go on to play Nightwing (reprising his role from ''Nightwing: The Series'') for Nightwing vs. Daredevil, as well as directing the battle for Winter Soldier vs. Red Hood.
** Yong Yea admitted in the comments of "Omni-Man vs. Homelander" that he's a huge fan of both ''WesternAnimation/Invincible2021 and Series/TheBoys2019'', so him getting the opportunity to be the voice of Homelander was a big honor for him.
** The [=SFM=] Animation Team (WebAnimation/DevilArtemis, Daitomodachi and Doovad Hohdan) were all fans of the show, with a few of them citing ''Death Battle'' as their main inspiration to start animating.

* ReleaseDateChange: Sabrewulf vs. Jon Talbain was originally set to release on November 2nd on [=YouTube=] (November 1st for Rooster Teeth FIRST members), but the release date was changed to be a day earlier so it could be released on Halloween.
* TheRemake:
** The "Starscream vs. Rainbow Dash" battle was remade including new information and better effects in the battle.
** About 24 hours after "Thor vs. Raiden" was released, Shortfactor (the animator) improved the visuals of the final phase of the battle, and was subsequently updated with the video.
** Samus Aran vs. Boba Fett has been remastered to add more information to the fighters, and have the animation be 3D instead of sprites.
** Venom vs. Bane was initially longer, but slower-paced and darker, which caused complaints among those with memberships who initially watched it. The episode was updated with a few cuts to the slow areas of the fight in order to improve the pacing as well as brightening the effects to increase visibility, along with different music. The original version, however, [[https://roosterteeth.com/watch/death-battle-season-4-venom-vs-bane is still up on RoosterTeeth's website]].
* RoleReprise:
** Almost all of the Creator/RoosterTeeth characters used in the show were reprised by their official voice actors. For the ''RWBY'' characters, Barbara Dunkelman and Kara Eberle reprised their roles as Yang and Weiss respectively. Subverted with Blake, however, as her official voice actress Arryn Zech was credited but voice clips from the show were used and Blake had very few lines in the fight.
** Most of the voice actors from ''Red vs. Blue'' reprise their roles, with Matt Hullum as the Meta and Sarge, Jen Brown as Carolina, Burnie Burns as both Church and Lopez, Geoff Ramsey as Grif, Gustavo Sorola as Simmons, Dan Godwin as Donut, and Jason Saldaña as Tucker.
** Outside of Rooster Teeth, there have been very few occurrences where an original official voice actor reprises their role. And if they do, it's usually unconfirmed to avoid legal issues, with some sort of ActorAllusion.
*** Creator/JohnnyYongBosch is heavily implied to have reprised his role as Ichigo in "Naruto VS Ichigo." The credit was under the name "Adam Park" and links to a Wikipedia article about frogs, referencing Bosch's role as the second [[Series/MightyMorphinPowerRangers Black Power Ranger]].
*** Creator/ChrisTergliafera is heavily implied to have reprised his role from ''VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcomInfinite'' as Sigma in "Ultron VS Sigma." *** Creator/DanteBasco reprised his role as Zuko in "Zuko VS Shoto Todoroki." Unlike the previous two examples, Zuko was the first non-Rooster Teeth character to have his official voice actor outright confirmed.
*** Creator/BrycePapenbrook is heavily implied to have reprised his role as Silver (being the current official voice at the time of the episode's release) in "Trunks VS Silver." The credit is under "Esu Onsti" (which is just "[[MemeticMutation It's no use]]" [[SdrawkcabName backwards]]).
*** While they didn't get David Tennant as the Doctor, Elliott Crossley is a known impressionist of his, having voiced the Tenth Doctor in ''Recap/DoctorWhoLockdown''.
** Voice actors from or affiliated with Creator/TeamFourStar will sometimes reprised their respective [[AbridgedSeries Abridged Series]] role when their character appears as an official combatant.
*** [[Creator/{{Lanipator}} Nick "Lanipator" Landis]] reprised his role as [[WebVideo/DragonBallZAbridged Vegeta]] in "Vegeta VS Shadow", the joke episode "Vegeta VS Mewtwo?", "Thor VS Vegeta", "Gogeta VS Vegito", and DBX's "Vegeta VS Zod".

** Creator/KiraBuckland reprised her role as Twilight Sparkle in "Raven VS Twilight Sparkle", having previously voiced her in WebAnimation/PonyDotMov.
** Danny Shepherd reprised his role as Nightwing in "Nightwing VS Daredevil" after previously portraying him in Ismahawk's fanmade web series, WebVideo/NightwingTheSeries.
** "Goku Black VS Reverse-Flash" has possibly the weirdest example as Reverse-Flash's voice actor, Valentine Stokes previously voiced several of the "It was me Barry!" memes, with his being some of the most well known.
* ScheduleSlip:
** The first "Goku vs. Superman" episode was scheduled for Dec 21st but was delayed when they decided the animation wasn't finished. Odd when [=ScrewAttack=] advertised that a prophecy would be fulfilled in the previews. It was the end of the Mayan Calendar. [[FridgeBrilliance What had so many fools worried]] [[MayanDoomsday would happen that day]], [[FridgeBrilliance and]] [[EarthShatteringKaboom what happened at the end of the fight?]]
** In late 2014, Death Battle boasted that it would give updates every week from now on (usually two weeks of character previews followed by the Death Battle proper, or a supplemental video if there was a delay). Sadly, this would seem a bit overambitious, as Death Battle was incapable for following this schedule for even three weeks before there was a delay.
** "Kirby vs. Majin Buu" was originally supposed to be released right after "Ryu vs. Scorpion", but its animator requested more time to work on the fight, and "Deadpool vs. Deathstroke" took its place on the episode list.
** Something similar happened in early 2015 when Death Battle decided to move updates to Wednesdays instead of Fridays. Again, they couldn't keep this schedule for even the first Death Battle of the year (Gaara vs Toph), which had to be delayed by an additional week.
** Originally, "Power Rangers vs. Voltron" was going to be the Season 3 finale, but had to be pushed back, with "Deadpool vs. Pinkie Pie" taking its place. It was then decided that it would be the premiere episode for Season 4, but "Lara Croft vs. Nathan Drake" had to take its place as it still wasn't ready. It was eventually released as the fourth episode of Season 4 and billed as Death Battle's "[[MilestoneCelebration 75th episode]]".
** The DBX episode "Thor vs. Vegeta" was meant to drop on June 2nd, 2020. However, when Rooster Teeth decided to halt all releases in solidarity of the protests of the death of George Floyd, this was also held back.
** "Red vs. Blue" was meant to drop in celebration of ''Red vs. Blue: ZERO'', but when the series was delayed in light of the Ryan Haywood scandal, this episode was delayed as well.
* ScrewedByTheLawyers: The show has been hit by Website/YouTube's infamous copyright claims several times over the years.
** The TMNT Battle Royale was taken down, but strangely the next episode, Leonardo VS Zitz, was allowed to stay up. This was thanks to Viacom (who owned an older [=ScrewAttack=] show). According to Ben, another reason the episode was blocked due to the disturbance to the viewers because of how out of character the turtles acted, even though pacifism was generally not allowed on the show.
** Godzilla's preview video was taken down in less than 10 minutes after it was uploaded. It can still be viewed on the Rooster Teeth website, but it was also available on the old [=ScrewAttack=] site.
** Ragna vs. Sol was removed because many pieces of fan art were used without permission. It was re-uploaded when the artists were properly credited. Prior to the video's debut, ''none'' of the artists were asked permission, contrary to what many people believe.
** Boba Fett/Samus Aran Remastered was also hit with a copyright violation... due to the music used in the DancePartyEnding to honor Creator/MontyOum. Very odd considering that it is music from his creation, ''WebAnimation/{{RWBY}}'', and that Website/ScrewAttack and Creator/RoosterTeeth were good friends back when they were separate companies.
** To prevent possible issues coming from music usage, the show - from Shredder vs. Silver Samurai onwards - has taken to using music from non-copyrighted or licensed sources for the character analysis sections, and brought on composers to create original songs for the fight animations - a practice once previously done on occasion for certain episodes. The exceptions were rundowns for Weiss in Season 6[[note]]Tracks from ''RWBY'' were used in her analysis[[/note]] and Randy Savage in Season 8[[note]]His {{Leitmotif}} is public domain and was used for his analysis.[[/note]]
** Ultron vs. Sigma also found itself on the receiving end of a copyright claim, though it would later be lifted.
** The Website/YouTube release of Aang vs. Edward Elric has also been hit with a copyright claim; fortunately the episode is still available to watch on the Rooster Teeth website.
** Danny Phantom vs. Jake Long was hit with a copyright claim.
** In another case of an episode hit by copyright, Beerus VS Sailor Galaxia was blocked on [=YouTube=] thanks in part to Creator/ToeiCompany. It is still on Rooster Teeth, fortunately. Later comments from the team has made it clear that this actually scared them off from doing a Sailor Moon matchup again until the time of the Tournament of Champions where they had one of the options for it be the titular character up against [[Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica Madoka Kaname]]
** Saitama vs Popeye got hit with this upon upload, causing the Website/YouTube release to be edited with Wiz revealing Saitama's workout routine instead of Saitama and the end of analysis quotes for both were removed entirely. The original version can still be seen on Rooster Teeth. Because of this, going on since that episode, they stopped using end quotes for episodes to avoid future issues.
* SignificantDoubleCasting: Kerem Erdinc voices two off-screen characters in ''Winter Soldier Vs. Red Hood'': Batman, when he's speaking to Jason before the fight starts, and [[spoiler:the Joker, when Jason starts hallucinating his voice after being crowbarred by Bucky]].
* ThinkOfTheChildren:
** [[WordOfGod Ben has stated]] in a [[https://roosterteeth.com/post/51824283 blog post]] that had they decided that Rainbow Dash lost, they would have scrapped the episode "Starscream vs. Rainbow Dash" for this very reason. It's also why they didn't swear at all during the video or have blood/gore.
** According to Ben, this was why Raven vs. Twilight ended the way it did. Basically, he realized children would find it and be interested in both characters and didn't want to traumatize them after the Ninja Turtles Battle Royal ended the way it did, so he chose a bloodless, mostly family-friendly death (or [[AmbiguousEnding whatever it is]]) that was in a way so parents could convince their kids that [[spoiler:Twilight was merely squashed by Raven's soul self and]] didn't really die.
* TroubledProduction: Jason Voorhees VS Michael Myers had many issues plaguing its development. Originally it was meant to be a live action fight but the studio they were working with canceled at the last minute leading them asking one of their 3D animators Devil Artemis to add in an additional fight onto his schedule during which he got hit with multiple problems like a hurricane hitting his town and his daughter being sick, not at all helped by Death Battle wanting to get the episode out by [[MeaningfulReleaseDate Halloween]] leading to what many people agree is a noticeable weak spot in an otherwise strong season.
* ThrowItIn:
** [[https://youtu.be/wrARceDcQfk?t=17m18s The 40th episode of DEATH BATTLE CAST revealed that a majority of the ending jokes for the previews are improvised on the spot by Ben and Chad.]]
** Mario vs. Sonic REVISTED had a shirtless Mario [[RuleOfFunny tear off his skin and trunks to reveal his clothes]] done by Blind Ferret. Chad and Ben never wrote this in and found it hilarious when they watched it.
** The Bloopers often show Chad and Ben coming up with jokes that weren't in the script that were added in, such as Boomstick mistaking the Spacenoids for the Noid from Domino's pizza, only for Wiz to compare them to "Space Nazis".
** The mouth used for the SynchroVox gag in Spongebob vs Aquaman belongs to animator Zach Watkins. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgy3oWb3BKg&t=617s It was originally intended as a placeholder]] due to Zack having a beard, but the crew thought that the beard sprouting from nowhere made the scene funnier, so it was kept in.
* TrollingCreator:
** For a couple years, Ben had us believe that Solid Snake vs Sam Fisher would never happen due to it being "too difficult to figure out a way to make an interesting fight." Turns out he was lying.
** At the end of ''Yang vs Tifa'', it starts out with next time on Death Battle... only for it to be taken over by John Francin-[=McCullah=] of Website/ScrewAttack's other web show, ''The Industry'', promoting said show's season finale, leaving the combatants for the next episode unrevealed. During the stream of said match, Yang's voice actress Barbara Dunkelman said that [[spoiler:something like Tifa's neck snap]] would never happen in ''RWBY''. [[spoiler:Volume 3, Episode 6 has Yang shoot a helpless Mercury, even if it was an accident and Yang was tricked into believing she was being attacked by the villain.]]
** During a Sidescrollers Podcast, the crew members would constantly say who Bayonetta would fight...while bleeping out the name and franchise. From what's been shown, there are at least two different versions of the character and their name begins with a D.[[note]]This ended up being Dante from ''VideoGame/DevilMayCry'', both of which starts with 'D', and Dante having two versions of himself, his standard version from the first four games and anime, and his version from the ContinuityReboot of ''VideoGame/DMCDevilMayCry''.[[/note]]
** As a hint to Amy's opponent, Ben took a picture of several Scott Pilgrim comics and posted it on Twitter. Except he stacked all of them on top of each other and took a picture of the pages, making it look like a plank of wood. He also posted it right after he already posted the reveal video.
* WhyFandomCantHaveNiceThings:
** The backlash from Goku vs. Superman caused the crew to swear off doing any more "Superman characters versus DBZ characters" battles, period. However, a few years later in his blog, [[https://roosterteeth.com/post/51844775 Ben stated that he was open to the idea of another round possibly happening]], which would come to fruition at the tail end of Season 10 with a third round in December 2023.
** The perpetual discourse that surrounds the ''Franchise/StarWars'' fandom in regards to the sequel trilogy is cited as the reason why Rey wasn't chosen to fight Korra, despite being her most popular matchup.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Season 4]]
* Lara Croft and Nathan Drake are both CulturedBadass treasure hunters known for getting through the most life threatening situations unscathed.
