* DyeingForYourArt: Creator/TomCruise went gray to play Vincent.
* PlayingAgainstType: Creator/TomCruise in only his [[InterviewWithTheVampire second]] ''villain'' role.
* ThrowItIn: The part where Vincent jumps over the chair after smashing the glass was a mistake by Cruise. It was left in because Mann thought it added to his character.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Believe it or not, the original idea was to cast Creator/AlPacino as Vincent and ''Creator/RobertDeNiro'' as Max. Yes, DeNiro's casting was to be in direct homage to ''Film/TaxiDriver'' (and possibly to ''Film/{{Heat}}''). Eventually, it was decided to go with younger leads.
** Creator/SpikeLee, Creator/MartinScorsese, and Creator/StevenSpielberg were all offered the chance to direct the movie.
** The original draft was set in Manhattan, New York. When Creator/MichaelMann came on board, he shifted the setting to LA.
** Creator/EdwardNorton, Creator/JohnTravolta and Creator/ColinFarrell were considered for Vincent. Creator/RussellCrowe came close to playing the role, but couldn't commit to the picture because he was busy preparing for the doomed ''Eucalyptus''. Creator/LeonardoDiCaprio was considered, but he was too busy with ''Film/TheAviator''.
** Creator/JohnnyDepp, Music/IceCube and even Creator/AdamSandler were considered for Max.
** Creator/ValKilmer was cast as Detective Fanning, but pulled out before filming began due to schedule conflicts with ''Film/{{Alexander}}''.
** Music/HansZimmer was attached to the film, in an early stage. He was replaced by Music/JamesNewtonHoward, probably by scheduling conflicts.
