* ActorAllusion:
** During season three, Ken Marino from TheState made an appearance. He's best known for his character Louie, The Guy Who Says His CatchPhrase Over and Over Again. After successfully cock-blocking him, Hank tells him to make a cup of tea and "dip his balls in it".
** When Hank's lawyer makes him wear a suit for his court hearing, he notes that he "looks like an FBI agent." A double ShoutOut when Karen responds he looks like a "brooding and comely FBI agent."

** Hank continually refers to Marcy as "Smurf" (usually "Cokey Smurf"). Pamela Adlon played Kelly on Series/TheFactsOfLife; during the episode "Small But Dangerous," Jo refers to Kelly as "Smurf."
* DawsonCasting:
** Mia, whose age of 16 is an important plot point, is played by an actress who is in her early 20s, and visibly so. The fact that she looks much older is also an important plot point. It also doesn't help that MadelineZima is 5'8".
** Averted with Madeleine Martin (Becca), notable given this show is NOT kid friendly.
* GeniusBonus: The show is filled with classic rock and heavy metal references. In fact, Hank's books South of Heaven, Seasons in the Abyss, and God Hates Us All are named after albums from American thrash metal band Music/Slayer.
* HeyItsThatGuy
** Hank's father was a high ranking inmate in Oz a while back, until Adebisi struck him with an AIDS infected needle.
*** He also made the mistake of killing Gus Fring's partner, and wound up mute and confined to a wheelchair with nothing but a bell to communicate with.
** Judy Greer plays recurring character Trixie, Hank's favorite hooker.
** Richard Bates used to be Detective Beckett's mentor.
** Sandy Cohen is now the Dean of a girl's school.
** Jill was an FBI agent before becoming Hank's TA.
** Looks like Vinnie Van Lowe hasn't changed much, going from questionable Private Eye to seedy English professor.
** StephenTobolowsky plays Stu Baggs, producer of "Fucking and Punching", who later becomes Marcy's second husband.
** Creator/CarlaGugino is Hank's attorney.
** Rob Lowe is Eddie Nero, a very... dedicated method actor.
** In another show, Daisy is probably the furthest thing from a porn star -- an intern for a forensic anthropologist. She didn't even change names! Still just as horny, too.
** Shannon is now a groupie. As a bonus, Hurley's a drug dealer!
** Marcy is played by Pamela Adlon, better known as Bobby Hill or Spinelli.
** Christopher Moltisanti finally became an established screenwriter.
** Ever wanted to see Lara Croft naked? Here's the code: check out season 5 of Californication. (Marcy and Stu's British nanny was played by Camilla Luddington, the voice of Lara in the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot.)
** RetroactiveRecognition: Becca's boyfriend Tyler is also Kristoff in Series/OnceUponATime.
* HeyItsThatVoice: In the Japanese dub, Becca is Sheryl Nome, Annelotte and Miyuki Takara.
* JustForFun/NamesTheSame: This was grounds for a lawsuit by the band Music/RedHotChiliPeppers, as the show shares its name with an album and a song by the band. The case did not reach a courtroom.
