* ActorAllusion:
** Creator/JimCarrey once performed a standup routine about impulses and how important it is to control them. In this film, the Riddler calls Two Face out on having a serious impulse control problem.
** When Bruce insists Robin should be called "Dick Grayson College Student." To which Dick replied "Screw you!" It's hard to blame Chris O'Donnell seeing how the last college he was in, [[Film/ScentOfAWoman involved nearly getting expelled and putting up with Al Pacino.]]
** The novelization gives Riddler one when you remember who plays him in the movie; during his triumphant raid on the Batcave, at one point he whispers, [[Film/The Mask "Somebody, stop me!"]]
* ActorInspiredElement: Creator/JimCarrey helped design a lot of his costumes.
* AllStarCast
* AwesomeDearBoy: Creator/ValKilmer jumped at the chance to play Batman, signing on without having read the script or knowing who the director was.
* BeamMeUpScotty: Folks, ''nowhere'' in this movie does Batman say "Chicks dig the car"; it's what ''Robin'' says in the CallBack to this movie in ''Film/BatmanAndRobin''. What Batman ''actually'' says is:
-->'''Batman''': It's the car, right? Chicks love the car.
* BreakawayPopHit: Music/{{U2}}'s "Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me". Inverted with Seal's "Kiss From A Rose" (it was released the year before, but only became a smash hit after [[RevivalByCommercialization its inclusion]]) - the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMD2TwRvuoU music video]] heavily featured the film.
* BTeamSequel: To the two Creator/TimBurton-helmed Franchise/{{Batman}} films.
* DawsonCasting: Chris O'Donnell is 25 playing a character that, at this stage of the storyline, is supposed to be a tween at the oldest. Bruce Wayne [[LampshadeHanging does suggest he's around college age]], but still...
* ExecutiveMeddling: See WhatCouldHaveBeen below.
* FakeAmerican: Creator/JimCarrey, Canadian by birth, as Riddler. Also, Aussie Creator/NicoleKidman.
** Although to be fair, the latter was born in Hawaii but her parents are from Australia.
* MissingTrailerScene: In multiple trailers, there is a scene where Two-Face says "If the Bat wants to play, we'll play!" This line/scene never made into the theatrical release. The line was even used in the Genesis/SNES video game adaptation of the film.
* OldShame: Only if you read it out of context. Creator/ValKilmer enjoyed working on this film and everyone involved (Schumacher possibly excluded, see TroubledProduction below) and would have been interested in returning once his schedule cleared up, but (fortunately for him) ''Film/BatmanAndRobin'' continued without him. But he was quoted as saying "I've done an absurdly commercial cartoon and now I'm more likely to get hired for a job I couldn't get hired for before because I hadn't done enough movies. It's so rare when an actor gets hired because he's right for the role, it just doesn't figure into it." (In ''Film/KissKissBangBang'', Kilmer's character Perry shows up and says virtually the same thing to Creator/RobertDowneyJr.)
* TheOtherDarrin: Two of them!
** Creator/ValKilmer replaced Creator/MichaelKeaton, who bowed out as Bruce Wayne/Batman after seeing -- and disliking -- the LighterAndSofter treatment.
** Creator/TommyLeeJones replaced Creator/BillyDeeWilliams as Harvey Dent/Two-Face. Contrary to popular belief, Williams was only contracted for one Bat-film to begin with (that being, of course, ''Film/{{Batman}}''), and did not have his contract bought out, nor was he ever even approached about playing Two-Face (until ''WesternAnimation/TheLEGOBatmanMovie'', at least).
* PlayingAgainstType: Creator/TommyLeeJones, who usually plays stoic DeadpanSnarker type characters, here plays Two-Face as an incredibly loony, off the wall villain the 1960s Adam West Batman style.
* PromotedFanboy:
** Unlike Creator/TimBurton, Creator/JoelSchumacher was a comic book fan.
** Creator/JimCarrey was a Batman fanboy as a child.
** Chris O'Donnell was a fan of the TV series.
* RealLifeRelative: Chris O'Donnell's sister can be seen directly behind him in the party scene where Robin is first introduced to the public.
* RoleReprisal: In the French dub, instead of being voiced by Creator/JimCarrey's official voice actor[[note]]Emmanuel Curtil[[/note]], the Riddler/Edward Nygma is voiced by Vincent Violette, reprising his role from ''WesternAnimation/BatmanTheAnimatedSeries''.
* SoMyKidsCanWatch: Tommy Lee Jones signed on as Two-Face because it was his son's favourite character.
* TroubledProduction: The working relationship between director Creator/JoelSchumacher and actor Creator/ValKilmer was said to be very, very bad. Tellingly, Joel does not talk much about Val in his audio commentary for the film.
** There were also reports that Creator/TommyLeeJones disliked Creator/JimCarrey, so much so that he wouldn't even have lunch with him. According to Carrey, the first time he met Jones, the veteran actor growled, "I do not sanction your buffoonery." Which is funny considering Jones would spend his entire screentime trying to out-ham the ham master Carrey.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** The[[http://www.batman-on-film.com/opinion_scissorpuppy_forever.html original version of]] ''[[http://www.batman-on-film.com/opinion_scissorpuppy_forever.html Batman Forever]]'', before it was edited to make it more family-friendly. Several of the cut scenes (notably "The Bat Must Die!" and Bruce's encounter with a giant bat) would appear in the music videos for the movie, and the comic book adaptation retains the deleted cuts while making it more violent, specifically the large pools of blood around the fallen Graysons.
** The obvious one: both Creator/MichaelKeaton and Creator/TimBurton were in negotiations to return in their respective positions as lead actor and director. Rumors abound that Burton was KickedUpstairs after the executives disliked the darker tone that ''Film/BatmanReturns'' had taken, and that Keaton bowed out after he learned that Burton wasn't returning. Nevertheless, Burton is credited on the movie as a producer, as he had been involved in drafting the original story.
** The cuts also would have changed the chronology of scenes in the finished cut: The Batsignal seen by Bruce at Wayne Enterprises is being helmed by Chase in the final cut, but it would've originally summoned him to the bank after Dent escaped Arkham in the deleted opener (which would explain the sirens Bruce hears when he sees it), and the scene with Chase on the roof would've been slotted before the Batmobile chase where it climbs the wall (with redubbing done to change the location from the circus to the bank).
** Unlike Burton, Schumacher is a [[OneOfUs life-long comic book fan]] and originally wanted to do a film version of ''[[ComicBook/BatmanYearOne Year One]].'' He had '''Creator/FrankMiller's''' help drafting a screenplay! But the [[ExecutiveMeddling executives at Warner Bros.]] wanted something that could be [[LighterAndSofter sold to kids...]]
** What would have happened had Billy Dee Williams insisted on playing Two-Face?
*** On the DVD featurettes, Billy Dee points out that the chemicals would have made one half of his face lighter than the other, and that this would play into questions of race, or something. Williams eventually got the chance to play Two-Face in ''WesternAnimation/TheLEGOBatmanMovie''.
** Another comic book fan lobbied to be director before Schumacher was hired. His name? Creator/SamRaimi.
** Rene Russo was in line to play Chase Meridian when it was still believed that Michael Keaton was going to come back to play Bruce Wayne/Batman, not Val Kilmer. She was replaced by Nicole Kidman because the producers weren't comfortable with the idea of having Batman's love interest be played by an actress rather significantly older than the actor playing him. This in spite the fact Rene Russo is only about five years older than Val Kilmer, who is about eight years older than Nicole Kidman. Plus, Margot Kidder was almost five years older than Christopher Reeve when they played Lois Lane and Clark Kent respectively in the Superman movies.
*** That being said, Keaton turned down the offer to reprise his role because he thought the script sucked, as explained in an early January 2017 [[http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/awards-chatter-podcast-michael-keaton-founder-959562 interview]].
** Schumacher also initially wanted Creator/SandraBullock to have a role in this movie (possibly as Chase).
** Marlon Wayans was originally set to play Robin, having been attached to the role since ''Batman Returns'', but was bought out of his contract. Other candidates included Creator/MattDamon, Creator/JudeLaw, Creator/EwanMcGregor, Creator/CoreyHaim, Corey Feldman, Toby Stephens, Creator/MarkWahlberg and Scott Speedman.
*** As did Creator/ChristianBale. Notably, when Bale auditioned for ''Film/BatmanBegins'', the Batsuit he wore in his screen test was the one Kilmer wore for the finale.
*** Though [[http://www.nowmagazine.co.uk/celebrity-news/267120/christian-bale-i-would-never-have-bloody-auditioned-to-play-robin Bale has denied auditioning for Robin.]]
** Before the helm was turned to Schumacher, Burton supposedly wanted [[Franchise/TheMonkees Mickey Dolenz]] as the Riddler, complete with a question mark [[BloodierAndGorier carved into his forehead]], natch. Carrey was planning on shaving a question mark on his head, but scrapped it because he was due in court for his divorce proceedings.
** William Baldwin was reported to be considered for Batman. Other names considered for the part included Creator/DanielDayLewis, Creator/KurtRussell, Creator/AlecBaldwin, Creator/EthanHawke, Creator/RalphFiennes, Creator/TomHanks, Creator/KeanuReeves and Creator/JohnnyDepp.
** Creator/MichellePfeiffer was considered to reprise her role as Catwoman.
** Creator/MelGibson turned down the role of Two-Face in order to make ''Film/{{Braveheart}}''.
** Music/MichaelJackson was attached at one point to play the Riddler, but he was ignored. Creator/MatthewBroderick also expressed interest in the role, while Creator/RobinWilliams turned it down.
** Early concepts of the final showdown on Claw Island had a huge, muscled, Riddler sitting on his throne when Batman finds him. The Riddler twists the two skulls on his armrests and the Riddler's muscled body is revealed to be a shell which splits in two, from which the real Riddler (wearing his white and green jumpsuit) steps out.
** When Creator/NicoleKidman signed on, it was assumed that she'd be playing Poison Ivy. She appear in the sequel.
