* ActingForTwo: Both Derek and Robert are played by Peter Jackson, which makes the scene where Derek tries to torture Robert to reveal why the aliens are here all the funnier.
* BannedInChina: The film was banned in the Australian state of Queensland for being too gory, despite already being censored by the Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC). This would turn out to be one of the last films banned in Queensland as Wayne Goss' Labor Government would abolish the state's separate censorship board in 1990, essentially lifting the ban. The film was eventually passed uncut in Australia in 2004.

* DyeingForYourArt:
** Pete O'Herne had to keep his beard throughout the ''four year'' filming stretch.
** The Jackson family had to eat an inordinate number of vegetable meals during those four years, thanks to him commandeering the oven to make the alien costumes.
* {{Feelies}}: Some original VHS versions of the film came with barfing bags and some came with extra cradboard finger to make alien's FlippingTheBird on the cover into less offensive inverted V-sign gesture.
* PublicDomain: The movie was mistakenly thought to be in the public domain, as Mill Creek Entertainment briefly included it in a 50 pack of horror films. It turned out that the copyright was still valid and the movie was pulled from the set.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Jackson started out making a short which was simply about Giles finding the town he was sent to overrun by aliens, with a DownerEnding of them capturing and eating him. Many of his scenes were simply taken straight from what had been filmed from the short, resulting in some odd tonal shifts that act like the aliens are a surprise.
