* ''Manga/AxisPowersHetalia'' is a series about [[MoeAnthropomorphism people who are countries]]. Doesn't sound too strange until you realize that the series manages to be educational ''and'' [[HoYay gay]]. The best part? The author is male.
** One of the girls who does appear is a total yaoi fangirl - she openly enjoys seeing her husband being molested by other nations.
** It gets better: Hetalia was serialized in a ''seinen'' magazine (Comic Birz). Yes, the series known for its almost entirely female fandom can be called a seinen.
** As an additional sidenote, said author was living in New York when he came up with the idea, which probably explains why it seems as though it's not ''quite'' expectedly Japanese.
* Each of the countries' quirks is based on what the country is famous for.
** Such as America and... Nantucket?
*** Well, there's [[HollywoodNewEngland Nantucket]] as his IdiotHair. The author later started a series called [[ChibisanDate "Chibi-san Date"]] that takes place in Nantucket.
* Switzerland and Lichtenstein are depicted as brother and sister, with Switzerland being extremely protective of her. In Japanese, they are voiced by Creator/RomiPark and RieKugimiya, respectively, similar to the relationship between their characters in Manga/FullmetalAlchemist (Park as Edward Elric and Kugimiya as Alphonse Elric)
** There's also TruthInTelevision, in that the two countries ''do'' view each other as "siblings" (''wir sind bruder'').
* Italy is a nihilistic Franchise/{{Batman}}, aka [[Manga/{{Bleach}} the 4th Espada]]. He's also [[{{One Piece}} Eustass "Captain" Kidd, the Supernova with the highest bounty]].
** ...and he's also [[VideoGame/AssassinsCreedIII Japanese!Connor]] apparently.
* Estonia's character design was based on Himaruya's own looks. Not the hair and eye colors, though.
** He also jokingly has called the character "the best character in the series"
* For America's Maru Kaite Chikyuu they used the "Awesome" and "Music" straight from Lady Gaga's "Just Dance".
** In the ending song from the movie, you can also hear him yell [[UsefulNotes/BarackObama Yes We Can!]] at one point.
*** He explicitly says "Yes we can" in "WDC World Dancing", one of his character songs, too.
* [[BannedInChina Banned in South Korea]], for various reasons.
* Romano/South Italy's character song actually uses the rhythm and tone of ''Tarantella Napolitana.'' Which makes sense given that when compared side by side, [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xw8QT2HRg1c they sound exactly the same]].
* Poland's Maru Kaite Chikyuu incorporates elements from the Polish National Anthem.

* ActorAllusion: At the beginning of the "France teaching Italy about sexual intercourse" scene in the dub of ''World Series'', Italy hums the first opening of ''SgtFrog''.
** Isn't it funny how the [[Creator/NoriakiSugiyama voice actor]] of the [[FateStayNight person that worked with King Arthur]] is now another Arthur who is Britain himself?
* BeamMeUpScotty:
** Contrary to what {{fanon}} says, the infamous "vital regions" [[MemeticMutation memetic line]] was ''never'' used by either Prussia or Russia. Austria first used it in [[http://www.hetarchive.net/scanlations/nonlinear.php?mrt the "Maria Theresa" series]]. Spain also used it in [[http://www.hetarchive.net/scanlations/nonlinear.php?gift Spain's Lazy Morning"]], and Lithuania in [[http://community.livejournal.com/hetalia/118420.html Checkmating Poland]].
** And America never called England "Iggy." Nor "Dad" for that matter (see BigBrotherMentor).
** Russia never referred to ''him''self as "Mother Russia."
** The "five meters" meme ''is entirely fanon'', and has never been used anywhere in the series ''ever''.
* CrossDressingVoices: Averted and {{Jossed}} for Iceland. A popular and old rumor was that he would be voiced by Creator/MitsukiSaiga, while fans often assumed that a female would eventually voice him anyway. His voice actor for TheMovie wound up being a relatively unknown male one, Ayumu Asakura.
** Avoided for Hong Kong. Lots of fans speculated about which female seiyuu would play him, but both the CD drama and the Special Episode of the anime gave him a male one: MotokiTakagi.
* FanNickname:
** China's frequently referred to as Nii-Ni (a play on the Japanese word for 'Big Brother', ''Oniisan'') in the Japanese fanbase.
** Liechtenstein doesn't have an official human name, but some fans call her "Lili Zwingli" to bypass that. It comes from a shortening of her nation name and from the Lily flower, which is sometimes considered to be a national flower of Liechtenstein.
*** Himaruya himself in a recent blog post suggested her likely human name to be Erica/Erika, Sisia, Elise, or Eva, with her possible surname Vogel.
** Because Belgium has no official human name, many fans refer to her as "Belle" or "Bella." Also, some fans of late have started to refer to her as "Alice", a pretty popular name in the Belgian land. Some fans will affectionately refer to her as "Belbel" on occasion. A blog post by Himaruya also listed Laura, Emma, Anri, and Manon as fan-suggested names for her.
** Many fans call Netherlands [[Literature/{{Twilight}} ''Sparkling Holland'']] due to having a hairstyle similar to Edward Cullen's.
*** For his human name, "Lars" (short form for Laurence) and "Wilhem" seem to have caught on in Western fandom. Himaruya has also listed Tim, Govert, Abel, and Morgens as various names suggested for him, though none of them are official.
** For Monaco, "Catherine" seems to be the most favored {{fanon}} human names. [[{{Tekken}} "Emilie"]], "Charlotte", "Monique", [[SpellMyNameWithAnS "Cecilia/Cécile"]], "Haydée" and "Chanelle" also tend to be commonly used.
** Back in the day when people relied on {{OC Stand In}}s for Cyprus, the name "Nekolis" was spotted around.
** There's no real agreement for a {{fanon}} "human name" for Romania, but "Gavril" and "[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mircea_Eliade Mircea]]" have been seen.
*** "Andrei" and "Vladimir" have also been spotted on places like Tumblr & deviantArt.
** To make up for Ukraine's lack of a proper "human name" fans call her Yekaterina "Katyusha" Braginskaya, her surname being the female variant of Russia's last name (Braginsky) and Yekaterina (Catherine/Katherine) being a common enough name for Slavic females.
*** NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Russians call three things 'Katyusha': girls, headbands... and rocket artillery.
*** Also in one of his blog entries, Himaruya listed Irunya, Maria, and Sofia as suggested names for her, along with Chernenko as a possible surname.
**** Irunya is a diminutive of Irene, so in itself, would be a nickname.
** "Mathias" and "Soren" are the fandom's most favored human first names for Denmark. The first is sometimes changed by fanfic writers due to [[OneSteveLimit avoid having a similar name]] to Canada.
*** Himaruya also listed in a blog post of his possible first names being "Abel", "Mikkel", "Magnus", "Simon",or "Bertram", and Danish {{Patronymic}} surnames, "Andersen", "Christensen", "Arnesen", and "Densen".
** Fan-given commonly have Norway referred to as "Norge" in fanworks, [[FanPreferredCouple especially from Denmark]] (which is, by the way, the term for Norway in Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian.) Norwegian (bokmal) at least. It's "Noreg" if you swear by Norwegian (nynorsk). Noreg is, by the way, the term for Norway in Iceland and the Faroes, apart from the Nynorsk variety (who got it from the western isles).
*** Himaruya has stated possible human first names for Norway, including "Lukas", "Børre", "Bjørn", "Kjetil", "Knut", and "Sigurd". "Bondevik" and "Thomassen" were listed as his potential surnames.
** "Emil", "Eyvindur", "Erik", "Eirík", and "Sigurður" are the first names Himaruya suggested for Iceland, and "Steilsson" being his surname.
** Himaruya has mentioned "Carlos Machado" as a possible human name for Cuba. It reached a minor MemeticMutation level when, whenever there was a mention of him online, some fans commented with "CARLOS MACHADOOOOOOO" in [[NoIndoorVoice All Caps]].
** To cover up for Taiwan's current lack of a proper "human name", some fans call her "Mei Mei" (which means "little sister" in Chinese) or simply "Mei" (which can mean "plum"). Taiwanese fans also nickname her "Wan-nyan" or "Wan-chan".
*** Himaruya recently listed Lin Yi Ling and Xiao Mei as possible names.
** An interesting case, as some fans give Hong Kong an Asian name, others a Western one, and still others ''both'' an Asian name and a Western name to represent Hong Kong having been under the rule of both China and England. "Hong" and "Xiao/Xiang" are the most popular Asian names for him; the Western ones have more variation.
*** Himaruya suggested two Chinese names for Hong Kong, "Wang Jialong" and "Li Xiaochun". A suggested English one was "Leon".
*** Having two names (one Chinese and one English) is actually TruthInTelevision for most Hong Kong people, especially if your family was middle/high class; this troper lives in Hong Kong , and a good portion of the older generation (born during British rule) have two different names, while almost everyone in the younger generation (born after British rule) have two names.
** Vietnam's most common human name in fanworks seems to be Ciel, but Phuong seems to becoming increasingly popular. Also Lien.
** Thai-Fans called Thailand "Aegaratt" which means Freedom in Thailand.
** "Bruce" and "Adam" are the most commonly used names for Australia. Himaruya has mentioned the following name suggestions sent by fans: Ralph, Christian, Kyle, and Jett.
** Due to the AmbiguousGender deal, fandom tends to give New Zealand a GenderBlenderName. "Chris" and "Charlie" have been spotted.
** The fandom hasn't really settled on a human name for Seychelles the way it has for Taiwan or Netherlands, but "Leonie", "Michelle" and "Angelique" are the most common human names for her in fanworks.
** For Seborga, the few "human names" seen around are "Paolo" or "Marcello".
** For Wy, "Izzy" and "Zoey" have been seen.
** "[[Literature/LordOfTheRings Legolas]]", for Germania's design.
** Nyo!Italy's often given the name "Feliciana" by the Western fandom as her human name, whereas the Japanese fandom seems to prefer "Alice" [[NoPronunciationGuide (pronounced as "Ah-LEE-che")]] judging by how quickly the {{Pixiv}} tag for the name filled up after Himaruya mentioned that someone suggested the name to him for female Italy (Before that, the popular Pixiv tag was "Daisy Vargas").
** Both Western and Japan fandom commonly call Nyo!Germany "Louise" or "Luise" as her human name. Some fans also opt to use "Monica", an unofficial name suggested to Himaruya for female Germany, instead.
** "[[CherryBlossomGirl Sakura]]" is the most widely accepted fanon name for Nyo!Japan in Japanese fandom, and it was in fact suggested to the artist. Many Western fans, however, continue to use "Kiku", the human first name the artist gave to her male counterpart, for her because [[GenderBlenderName Kiku can also be a female name]].
** Fans from the Western fandom have often given Nyo!America the name "Amelia", "Amanda", "Abigail" (shortened to "Abby") or "Allison" (shortened to "Ally"). However, the Japanese fandom seems to prefer the name "Emily" for her.
*** InSeriesNickname: In the strip where the genderbends appear, she is called (what is translated to) Americako. Most of the fandom, however, simply call her "Ameriko".
** Both Western and Japanese fandom have given Nyo!England the name "Alice". And though unofficial, Himaruya had mentioned in his blog that someone had suggested the name "Rosa" for England. Western fans may also call her "Rose", "Ann", "Elizabeth", "Rosemary" or "Audrey". Some people prefer to call her "Guinevere", referring to King Arthur's wife.
** Nyo!France has been given the unofficial name, "Françoise", by both sides of the fandom. Though, there are some fans who alternatively choose "Marianne" as her name instead.
** "Anya" is commonly chosen as Nyo!Russia's human name by fans, and was even suggested to the artist at some point. "Ivanna" is also popular among fans as well as "Anastasia", "Inna" and "Irina".
*** Or even, Kolka?
** Fans often opt to call Nyo!China "Chun-Yan" as her human name, and has been suggested to Himaruya once.
** Western fandom seems to prefer "Madeline" (shortened to "Maddie") as Nyo!Canada's name. Also, Himaruya had said on his blog that a fan had suggested her name be "Marguerite" with her nickname being "Meg" for short; this name is unofficial.
** The fandom hasn't really settled on a human name for Nyo!Seychelles, but "Victor" is one of the more common human names for him in fanworks.
** Nyo!South Italy is often given the name "Lovina" by most of the Western fandom. Japanese fandom, however, calls her "Katarina" or "Catalina". According to Himaruya, a fan had once suggested for her name to be "Chiara". The name, though, is unofficial.
** Nyo!Spain is either called "Isabel" or "Carmen" by Japanese fandom. Western fans on the other hand often prefer to call her "Antonia", "Maria" or "Rita".
** Nyo!Austria's most popular "human names" among fans are "Anna" or "Anneliese", thought "Rosalinde" and "Hildegarde" also been spotted.
** Nyo!Prussia's most popular "human names" among fans are "Giselle", "Gisela" or "Maria". "Gretel" also isn't unheard of.
*** Himaruya had mentioned once that a fan suggested for "Julchen" to be her human name. However, as "Julchen" is an affectionate nickname based on the name 2Julia", fans tend to opt for the whole name instead.
** Japanese fandom has given Hungary's male counterpart the names "Daniel", "Hendrik" or "Elian". Western fans usually just shorten his country name to "Gary"; "Mangary" is in fact a common term used for him.
*** None of which are Hungarian names. (Daniel is the only one that has a Hungarian cognate.)
** Male Liechtenstein was given the name "Noah Stein" by most fans.
** Some fans call Nyo!Sweden "Astrid", "Silvia", "Kristine", "Mathilde" or "Batilda".
*** Only the first three are actually Swedish names. The Swedish version of Mathilde and Batilda is Mat([[SpellMyNameWithAnS h]])ilda,.
** Some fans call Nyo!Belarus "Aleksandr" or the diminutive "Sasha". Others refer to him as "Nikolai"/"Nikolas", or its diminutives "Niki"/"Nikita".
** Fans often prefer the human name "Yuri" for Nyo!Ukraine. "Dimitri"/"Dymtro" has also been seen.
** Nyo!South Korea's most popular "human names" among fans are "Soo Yeon" or "Chun Hi".
* HeyItsThatVoice: In full effect when you realize that the Allies' meetings feature (in Japanese) [[TengenToppaGurrenLagann Kamina]], [[Manga/{{Naruto}} Sasuke Uchiha]], [[Manga/FullMetalAlchemist Gluttony]], and [[{{Trigun}} Vash]]. Not to mention that [[Manga/{{Bleach}} Hitsugaya]] is kicking around as Switzerland.
** Not to mention Axis Powers Japan sharring the voice of [[Manga/ZatchBell Folgore]] in the Japanese version.
** Also, the [[Manga/FullMetalAlchemist Elric brothers]] as another sibling duo, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
** In the dub, however, [[Manga/FullMetalAlchemist the Elric Brothers]] are [[Creator/VicMignogna Greece]] and [[Creator/MaxeyWhitehead Sealand]].

It might be easier to find Ouran VA's who ''aren't'' in Hetalia.

*** Honey plays another cute little boy as Chibi America.

*** Watch out for France's Dunk Smash, Japan's Acrobatic Play and America's anime-only coordination!

*** [[Creator/MaiGoto Japan]] is [[Manga/FullmetalAlchemist May Chang]].
* OldShame: Himaruya has deleted some strips and illustrations for the series over the years, probably for UnfortunateImplications and mistakes that he later corrected.
* OneOfUs:
** [[http://principalityofwy.com/principality-of-wy-promotes-world-peace/ Prince Paul of Wy]].
** [[http://twitter.com/#!/tristencitrine Char]], Hetalia's Brand Manager at Funimation, is quite the fangirl, to the point where "Char is watching us!" became a meme on the LiveJournal community.
** Several people working at Creator/{{Funimation}} have mentioned loving the series.
* TheOtherDarrin: In the case of Romano's younger self, initially voiced by his older self's actor in the first episode, then switched in episode 60.
* PlayingAgainstType:
** Creator/HirokiTakahashi, who normally plays HotBlooded, JerkAss characters, voices Japan.
** Fangirl-magnet Creator/VicMignogna voices... a sleepy, silent, bored Greece. Who has less lines in season 1 and 2 than ''Canada!''
** Creator/EricVale as sweet, quiet Canada as well.
** [[Creator/RieKugimiya Liechtenstein's seiyuu]] is much better known for voicing [[{{Tsundere}} Tsunderes]].
** Belarus's seiyuu Creator/UraraTakano, who more often than not plays cute boys or OneeSama types.
*** Contrast with Creator/MonicaRial, who is ''[[SgtFrog very]] [[Manga/FullmetalAlchemist much]]'' in her element. That said, ''those'' parts were a departure for her at the time, so she's growing into a new "type" here.
* ReclusiveArtist: A curious example for Wy. While she is indeed an artist and also really hard to reach that's actually because [[http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/01/23/1074732605593.html?from=storyrhs they can't build a driveway]].
** Kugelmugel also counts.
** Ladonia's founding boss created the driftwood sculptures in his claimed land.
* RelationshipVoiceActor: Switzerland's seiyuu is [[Creator/RomiPark Romi Paku]] aka [[Manga/FullmetalAlchemist Edward Elric]]. Liechtenstein? Voiced by RieKugimiya aka Alphonse Elric. Add Seychelles to the mix as well, as Creator/MegumiTakamoto also voices Winry Rockbell in ''[[Manga/FullmetalAlchemist Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood]]''.
* ShrugOfGod: About a lot of things ranging from how the nations are born, what exactly happens to the personifications where their nation no longer exists, to if/when certain nations will appear in the series.
* TalkingToHimself:
** Creator/DaisukeNamikawa voices ''both'' Italies. Meanwhile, Aki Kanada voices ''both'' of their younger selves.
** America and Canada are ''both'' voiced by Creator/KatsuyukiKonishi in Japanese and Creator/EricVale in English.
** China and Taiwan are also voiced by the same actress in China's drama track.
*** And in Taiwan's character song, Kaida has a duet with herself as China makes a special appearance!
* TooSoon: Due to the obvious RealLife issues, Tibet just appeared in a single strip. In the webcast adaptation of said strip, he was replaced by [[PandaingToTheAudience a talking panda]].
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Many of the characters were originally quite different than how they were eventually portrayed.
** Italy wasn't originally intended to have his IdiotHair, but Himaruya drew it in at the last minute to make him appear cuter. His personality was also originally to be similar to a character from Himaruya's first series, ''Advance! Kitakou Broadcasting Club'' in being simply unlucky and cowardly, not being ''that'' much of a ditz.
** Early notes in a booklet included with the special edition of volume 3 revealed that Germany was to be more of a "scary" character and moodier, but became more of a sympathetic type as the story evolved.
** According to volume 3, China was going to be middle-aged and have short hair and glasses, and be more like Austria in personality.
** According to volume 3, America was supposed to have been more handsome, more cheeky, and smarter. Himaruya has stated that the original version would not have worked out that well.
** Himaruya originally considered giving England normal thin eyebrows, as well as making him an older man who attempted to dress trendy and younger. He changed his mind on the eyebrows after deciding he wanted them to mimic the brow patterns of a Shiba dog.
** France was originally planned as a straight stereotype of a completely suave character, and he would have had visible wrinkles and shorter hair. Like America, he actually appeared in the strips with some of those physical characteristics before the ArtEvolution hit.
** According to volume 3, Russia was originally had dark hair, was middle-aged, and was going to be a crybaby whose personality changed completely when he got drunk.
** Along with the idea for Hungary as a man, Himaruya had another idea for her personality, with her being a snide and witchy type of woman who would shoot people full of arrows if they mistook her for a guy. The basis of her current design and this rejected personality were in turn recycled from a Hungarian witch character in a series that never materialized.
** Prussia was initially to have long hair and facial characteristics more like Poland, as well as being more mature.
** Himaruya had one idea for Switzerland to actually be [[{{Bifauxnen}} a woman who dressed masculine when in uniform]], but who would wind up shocking others like Germany [[SheCleansUpNicely when they would see her in plain clothing.]]
*** A recent blog entry (October 2011) states that he would have originally been [[YodelLand a girl with pigtails]] until Hima apparently saw a Swiss guy ''[[GunsInChurch out shopping with a gun]]''.
** At first Himaruya considered having Liechtenstein emulate her brother even more, with a harsher personality and a cold manner of speech.
** According to volume 3, originally Greece [[{{Meganekko}} had glasses]] and shorter hair.
** Poland was initially intended to be the first female, while Hungary was to be male.
** According to [[http://himaruya.blog61.fc2.com/blog-entry-525.html this blog entry]], Belarus originally was supposed to be a brunette and quite more mellow and stable. A remnant of this idea can be seen in her first colored manga appearance, where her facial expression when threatening Latvia is a little less severe, while her hair and eyes are both colored brown.
*** Volume 3 notes also revealed that Himaruya played around with the idea of a {{Tsundere}} Belarus who was hot-tempered and constantly nagging.
*** Another instance of an early and cuter Belarus design can be seen in a ''VisualNovel/SchoolDays'' [[http://www.geocities.jp/himaruya/soviet.gif -parodying doodle by Himaruya, entitled "Soviet Days"]].
** Ukraine was to originally have a more average-sized chest, but in contrast, her personality would have been less dignified and she was to be even ''more'' unlucky.
** Cuba was initially set to be a cute boy who was kinder, yet still strong-willed.
** A prototype design for Korea had the character as a [[http://hetalia.wikia.com/wiki/File:FemaleKorea.PNG girl]] with aspirations to be a pop idol. The design for the female Korea was inspired by the lead of an earlier, short-lived webcomic by Himaruya, entitled [=MoeKan=] (and even directly resembled her in one of the drafts). It was also re-used for his canon GenderFlip self.
*** He was also supposed to be in the anime, but then the South Korean government, MoralGuardians and FanDumb declared a DudeNotFunny on the character [[note]]While both Kids' Station and Studio Deen denied there ever was to be a Korea character in the anime, he did appear in the first ending sequence and in a character design on the website (that was removed shortly after the controversy), as well as an animation error in episode 14 (when they removed his role from the plot, but forgot to do a retake on one scene that showed him from behind)[[/note]]. Fans can still dream though since Himaruya did not dispose of him, at least in his blog, as of 2010-11.
**** Himaruya himself seems to have [[TakeAThirdOption taken a third option]]: Korea's out of official merchandise and media, but he keeps drawing him on a regular basis in his blog and website since he can do whatever he wants there. [[http://himaruya.blog61.fc2.com/blog-entry-1284.html He still gets strips of his own]], and also appears in ''Manga/{{Hetaween 2011}}'' and {{Hetalia Bloodbath 2011}}.
** Himaruya had ''many'' [[http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/hetalia/images/9/9b/Taiwandesigns.gif preliminary designs of Taiwan]], including: a little girl, an old man, a DragonLady, a short-haired tomboy, a little boy and a young man.
** According to WordOfGod, Seychelles was based off of an old character who was meant to represent Nagasaki.
*** As well, an initial design shows Seychelles with [[BigOlEyebrows one very bushy eyebrow]] and one normal one. This sketch also has her trademark ribbons missing.
** There's a discarded [[http://himaruya.blog61.fc2.com/blog-entry-1307.html sketch]] of Luxembourg showing his face that also appear [[http://www.hetarchive.net/scanlations/xmas2011/nanikonohito.jpg in Belgium's nightmares]] (while the real Luxembourg is hiding behind the door):
-->'''Belgium:''' Ugh~ [[LampshadeHanging Who's this guy]]... this isn't the Luxem I know.
** Nagasaki originally had ribbons in her hair and looked more like Seychelles (who in fact was based from that old design).
** Okinawa was originally to be a ''girl'' with flowers in her hair, as shown in a discarded sketch in one of Himaruya's galleries. She was also an {{Expy}} of Tira Sugusuku, a character existing in both the Barjona and Kitakou series. However, a girl resembling the original design (or Tira) can be seen at his house in his debut.
** In the dub, Creator/ToddHaberkorn was originally cast as Britain, but the role of Italy ended up having to be recast.
** Apparently, the recasting of Italy ended up delaying the dub for a while because they couldn't decide between Creator/ToddHaberkorn and Creator/VicMignogna.
