* AllStarCast: While they already had Jessica Lange, this is the season where the number of Oscar winners and nominees exploded. They have two winners (Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates) and two nominees (Angela Bassett and Gabourey Sidibe). Not to mention appearances from Patti [=LuPone=] and Stevie Nicks, who are both legends in their own right.
* CreatorBacklash: Jessica Lange admits that she considers this to be her least favorite season of the series. She clarifies that although she found her character well written, she did not think the same about the plot.
* DawsonCasting:
** The real Marie Laveau would have been in her 30s when Madame [=LaLaurie=]'s crimes were discovered. She's played by Creator/AngelaBassett, who is in her 50s.
** Misty Day is said to be not too much older than the other girls, making her late teens/early twenties. She is played by Creator/LilyRabe, who was in her early 30s at the time of filming.
* PlayingAgainstType
** Creator/EmmaRoberts had played TheCutie a lot before taking on the role of AlphaBitch Madison, including Film/ItsKindOfAFunnyStory and her supremely innocent Film/NancyDrew. Although it's subverted as her most famous role at the time was Jill Roberts, a .
** Delphine [=LaLaurie=] certainly isn't Creator/KathyBates's first villain, but Bates hasn't played a lot of racists, more often embodying the friendlier aspects of the South.
* PromotedFanboy: In the behind the scenes footage, Creator/LilyRabe reveals she was already a big Stevie Nicks fan (even saying Misty’s her inner fangirl amped up) and was elated to get to work with her.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** There were apparently talks to give Coven a spin-off series, but Ryan Murphy ultimately decided to wrap up everything in this season. This would likely explain why there was so much word-building put in that wasn't touched, and several arcs being cut short.
*** This season's cast of characters would eventually be revisited in Apocalypse, the show's eighth season which some would argue is more of a Coven sequel than anything else.
*** Additionally, Coven received a SpiritualSuccessor of sorts in the form of Scream Queens which seems designed to cater to those who enjoyed the Camp campier, more humorous tone of this season, and even features Creator/EmmaRoberts playing a very similar character to Madison Montgomery.
** Murphy wrote a role in the season for Creator/ReeseWitherspoon but she was unable to accept due to scheduling conflicts. Who that character was is unknown though it may have been an additional witch.
** Creator/ConnieBritton also had to decline appearing in the season due to scheduling conflicts despite liking her character.
* Episode 9 "Head" was the second time an FX series closed an episode with some version of the song "Oh Freedom". Series/SonsOfAnarchy closed their season two episode "Falx Cerebri" with a choir version of the same song.
